<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 75

The Righteousness Of The Omnipotent

If now thou hast understanding, hear this: hearken to the voice of my words.

Shall even he that hateth right govern? and wilt thou condemn him that is most just?

Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly?

How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands.

In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand. (Job 34:16-20 KJV)

(Sermon)

What Elihu thinks of the righteousness of God is to protect and reign the world, described in Verses 10 to 12, Therefore hearken unto me ye men of understanding: far be it from God, that he should do wickedness; and from the Almighty, that he should commit iniquity. For the work of a man shall he render unto him, and cause every man to find according to his ways. Yea, surely God will not do wickedly, neither will the Almighty pervert judgment.

His words of God, governing and judging the world, are right, supported in the reality by Psalm 9:8, And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness, and 99:4, The king's strength also loveth judgment; thou dost establish equity, thou executest judgment and righteousness in Jacob. That is, since the creation, the world has always been under the justice and righteousness of God, which is still being true now.

Then, is it possible to see the world being ruled by the justice and righteousness of God? There are full of injustice, corruption and unrighteousness in the world, which has been the reality since the Fall of Adam. We hear of misconducts of politicians, businessmen, and suicides of the oppressed. Having that in mind, it is no wonder we question ourselves of is God controlling the world in His justice and righteousness?

If we were in the afflictions that Job had, could we still say ‘yes’ to the question? If one who has believed in God for ones entire life were in such pain, it is obvious that one would come to doubt the righteousness of God. Thus, how much would you accept what Elihu said as our own words?

Elihu says in Verses 14 and 15, If he set his heart upon man, if he gather unto himself his spirit and his breath; All flesh shall perish together, and man shall turn again unto dust, meaning since it is the righteousness of God that all flesh turn to dust, Job is wrong because he said God is not just or righteous.

Taking a look at his words, we find that Elihu doesnt mean the righteousness of God limited to Jobs individual matter. We can say he sees death as the work of God, which is an evidence of the fact that the world is being reigned by God.

Before death, all flesh is nothing but dust, including kings, leaders, high officials and wealthy people. In this sense, it is true that the words of Elihu make us see who we are. He sees Job, insisting on the innocence of his righteousness and complaining God, refusing it, denies the fact that all die, including Job in the government of the righteousness of God. Then, we understand why Elihu shows his fury to Job.

Verses 18 thru 20 are also true, Is it fit to say to a king, Thou art wicked? and to princes, Ye are ungodly? How much less to him that accepteth not the persons of princes, nor regardeth the rich more than the poor? for they all are the work of his hands. In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.

There is no discrimination in death. The timing of death also belongs to God as well, not men. Hence, it is true that believers can witness the judgement of God thru death as the work of God. It is the righteousness of God that He turns all to dust for no one is righteousis nothing wrong. Yet, we ought to stop and ponder is that all in the work of God that God shows His righteousness to the world?

There wouldnt be existence of the world if God only reigned it in His righteousness. As long as sin is in the world, it will be the same no matter how long it will exist, meaning there will be sin in the world. Thus, according to the words of Elihu, the world should already have been judged by God.

Even in the moment when Elihu pours his anger toward Job, there is no reason for anyone to be alive, including Elihu and Job. In this view, we can say although Elihu sees God, working in His righteousness through death, he isnt seeing that he is also the one perishing in the judgement.

In the Gospel according to John 8, we see scribes and Pharisees, asking Jesus of what He would do to a woman caught in adultery, who was supposed to be stoned according to the law of Moses. In the righteousness of God, she should have died. Yet, Jesus let those without sin stone her first and all there left the place. It was the real righteousness of God that one without sin stones her.

Therefore, before the righteousness of God, no one can judge others because all are to be judged before God. In other words, no one can say, you are a sinner who deserves Gods judgement, by mentioning the righteousness of God. In this sense, although Elihu says the truth that God is showing His righteousness in turning all to death, he isnt seeing who he is before God at all.

All must be punished in the work of God, sufficing His character, righteousness. Yet, He asked all demands of His righteousness to Jesus, the sinless One. Instead, He saved His people, who deserve to perish, in His forgiveness. This is the true reality, revealed by His righteousness.

Thus, whether one is in the afflictions like Job or not, one is in the love of God. This is the reality of the world. Therefore, nothing is unfair to believers even the wicked in prosperity. They still see the righteousness of God there, believing that it is the true reality for them that God keeps them in the love of Christ, shedding His precious blood in the eternal life.

Elihu sees Jobs hardships as the cost of his sins, believing this is the righteousness of God. Yet, he is ignorant that God is still working in His justice, having chosen Job. Even though he says righteousness, he isnt seeing the love of God through it, not knowing although all turn to dust, thats not all for His righteousness.

Job must perish not because of the fact that Job calls himself righteous. Even if he confessed he deserves to die, his status wouldnt change. Nevertheless, Jobs three friends and Elihu are way sensitive to his words, thinking Job, saying such, is unrighteous and arrogant though ones saying something right doesnt justify one for ones righteousness.

Of course, Im not saying we should connive over words out of the way of the gospel. Yet, instead of telling one not to say such, we ought to preach Christ and His forgiveness of sins. This is what we ought to do, which is the result of coming to know Christ and the forgiveness of God. God has fulfilled His righteousness and love by the blood of Jesus Christ, shining throughout the cross, testified only by the wisdom and power of God. Likewise, all believers come to experience the righteousness and love of God, the Omnipotent, at the cross!
