<설교>

Chapter 78

You Must Wait For Him

By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty.

But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night;

Who teacheth us more than the beasts of the earth, and maketh us wiser than the fowls of heaven?

There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men.

Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.

Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.

But now, because it is not so, he hath visited in his anger; yet he knoweth it not in great extremity:

Therefore doth Job open his mouth in vain; he multiplieth words without knowledge. (Job 35:9-16 KJV)

(Sermon)

The word of Elihu for Job sounds like a prophet, logical and faithful, which Job ought to pay attention to. Job would rather sound like arrogant since he considers himself righteous. In this sense, Elihu’s fury toward Job is understandable because it is of Job’s sin. Yet, the Book of Job is not that simple to interpret.

In Verses 9 and 10, he says, “By reason of the multitude of oppressions they make the oppressed to cry: they cry out by reason of the arm of the mighty. But none saith, Where is God my maker, who giveth songs in the night.”

It could be seen that Job isn’t crying to God for help although he is suffering from the afflictions. In our common sense, Elihu is not wrong to say that because we think believers should ask God in predicament by faith.

Even though it is right that believers are to seek God for help in prayer by faith, they ought to make sure what the purpose of the creation of God is: for God or for men.

According to Ephesians 1:11-12, the purpose of the work of God is the glory of God. There is none in the world of men but God. Thus, believers should put their wills on God’s.

However, it can never be done by our will voluntarily. Since our will is never off our self-centered love, we always find ourselves against the will of God. That’s why our prayer should be that the will of God is done unto us.

In other words, we ought to ask God for the glory of God, not for ours. In this aspect, we can find that the word of Elihu is man-centered’s. Anyway, Job would rather know the reason of the afflictions than ask God for help, which might seem unfaithful to Elihu.

In Job 23:2-4, Job says, “Even to day is my complaint bitter: my stroke is heavier than my groaning. Oh that I knew where I might find him! that I might come even to his seat!”

He also says in Job 23:8-9, “Behold, I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him: On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.”

He thought he would solve his problem if he met God, but he couldn’t find Him anywhere, which makes him lament. It might be true that he sounds unfaithful when we think of the fact that God is alive and always with us. Yet, can we dare to say that we meet God? Can we meet God when we are in frustration like that of Job?

It is true that we must admit that we can’t meet or see God. Nevertheless, believers seek and pray to God for their problems, which is nothing but uttering their wish lists out of luck. From this point of view, it might be wrong to say that Job is unfaithful because he didn’t ask God for help in his difficulties. In this sense, we can learn that there is a fault in Elihu’s words.

We can often hear preachers say to pray and seek God when we have hardships. They make themselves sound hopeful, saying God is so sincere that He answers the prayer of His children, not ignoring them.

Yet, we need to ponder if such understanding is of faith and suitable for creatures, by the will of God and plan. The Book of Job is good enough to make us think of such thoughts.

It presents us the failure of a seemingly perfect man in faith and the recovery, which also has nothing to do with his conditions. Nonetheless, the people around him interpret his situations connected to virtues of believers, ending up criticizing him. That’s why it is beneficial for us to read the Book of Job that we learn the danger of how our life of faith becomes a mere religion.

In Verses 12 and 13, it says, “There they cry, but none giveth answer, because of the pride of evil men. Surely God will not hear vanity, neither will the Almighty regard it.”

What Elihu said in the verses can also be heard in the modern Christianity time to time. He says vanity is of crying in pride. In other words, God would never hear nor take care of the cry of the evil in pride because it is all vain. It is logically correct because it is obvious that God hears not sinners in pride.

Even in Proverbs 15:8, it says, “The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.”

Elihu defines Job as the evil because he considers himself righteous. He wanted to say that Job can’t see nor meet God because God wouldn’t hear nor take care of the evil. As I have spoken earlier, this is a common thought among christians in the modern Christianity. That’s why they say they have to cleanse themselves by repenting for their sins to be heard by God.

What Elihu is missing here is that he forgets the matter of sin, between God and man. The sin problem can’t be solved by man but by the blood of Jesus Christ. The sin doesn’t disappear but is covered by His blood.

Therefore, what believers are to be aware of is themselves who deserve the judgement of God when they see their sin in the relationship with God. Such awareness makes them say, “why would Thou save me, such sinner?”, not, “save me.” If it is the content of faith, faith, which is presented in the right understanding of sin, seems foreign, strange and different from our common sense of faith.

If Elihu sees Job as the evil because he considers himself righteous, Elihu’s idea of righteousness is that Job doesn’t see himself as the righteous. That is, Elihu is unrighteous to God as well. Thus, he should have thought of himself, knowing all men are evil before God, instead of Job’s unrighteousness. It is because God is pleased with the prayer of the righteous as the Book of Proverbs says and the righteous is the one like the publican in Luke 18 who knows he doesn’t even deserve to look up to heaven in the awareness of his shamefulness and pity before God.

In Verse 14, he says, “Although thou sayest thou shalt not see him, yet judgment is before him; therefore trust thou in him.”

In fact, as we have heard Job so far, we can’t say that Job has waited for God. Yet, if Job had waited for God as Elihu said, it would mean that Job waited for God to hear what he wanted to hear from God.

However such waiting is vain because it is not the point of God that He wants us to understand the work of God. God works to make His people confess His Son, which is the glory of God. That’s why He leads His people to the knowledge of their valuelessness and misery. Therefore, believers ought to wait for the fulfillment of the work of God, that is, knowing the love of God!
