<설교>

Chapter 2

Vain Labor

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.

The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.

The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits.

All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. (Ecclesiastes 1:3-7 KJV)

(Sermon)

If people in the world were to hear the preacher saying all things are vain, they wouldn’t admit it because they believe there are surely some things meaningful. For example, if one says that a man and a woman marrying each other and bearing a baby and rearing the baby together is vain, would others admittedly say, ‘yes’? They are against it by saying, ‘are you saying we should neither marry nor bear our child?’

Then, since all are vain, if we do nothing, is it OK? That all are in vain means, as it says, that all things in the world are vain. Whether marrying or not marrying, it belongs to ‘all.’ Having a job or being unemployed’ also belongs to ‘all.’

Thus, there is nothing ‘not vain’ in the world. Even if one doesn’t marry because marrying is vain, one can’t avert ‘vain.’ Then, if we understand the words of the preacher as ‘not doing anything’, it is nothing but ignoring his intention, taking him at self-centered mind.

The reason why all things are vain is because there is sin in the world. Thus, looking at the cross-centered mind, whatever is done in the world, where there is sin, it is in sin. In other words, the reality of the world is the judgement due to sin, revealed ‘vain’ at the point of the cross.

In Verse 3, it says, “What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?” Even if one lives for oneself, one can’t make oneself profitable, meaning one is vain, which is our limit.

Think of the life of faith for us in such limit. Let’s say we believe in Christ. What can we do with such belief? Most christians think there should be things we labor for Christ, considering faith with labor is the true faith. Yet, according to the preacher in Ecclesiastes, there is nothing profitable in the labor of faith.

However, people can’t bear the fact that their labor is ignored in vanity, wanting their labor is counted as acts of faith, wishing they were clothed with good faith. To such people like us, the words of the preacher sound insipid.

In Psalm 127:1, it says, “Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”

Men don’t live by their labor. It is the faith that believes that there is the labor of God that keeps us to live, not boasting ourselves for accomplishing things we’ve made with our labor. The idea of ‘my labor’ itself is wrong, forgetting the fact that God enables us to labor as a gift in His grace.

Do you remember the meaning of ‘the son of David’ I told you last week? Understanding the sin of David, ‘the son of David’ could mean ‘the son of the sin.’ No matter how rich he has been, he is no more than the son of the sin.

God let David take Jerusalem and let Solomon build the temple, implying that although he was born a son of sin, he lives in the forgiveness of sin by the blood of the lamb, living as a holy child of God. Thus, ‘the king of Jerusalem’ means the one who testifies the mercy and compassion of God, flowing through the temple.

Imagine that the preacher looks at all things at this point of view. Would he evaluate what he possesses valuable? Even though Solomon was having the most power and riches, nothing can make him free from sin. Thus, at the reality that he was born a sinner, living in sin, he is nothing but deserves the judgement of God.

One who deserves the judgement can’t be protected by the power and riches but by the blood of the sacrificial lamb killed at the temple. This should be our interpretation of daily lives. Thus, Solomon’s life was kept by the grace of the blood. In other words, it was kept by the blood of Jesus Christ shedding on the cross, not by his power nor riches.

In this sense, the world changes not. What seems to change is cultures and civilizations but the way that the world is kept is the same. That’s why the preacher mentions the sun, wind, river with Verse 4, “One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever”, meaning the world is neither changed nor kept by our labor.

Nevertheless, we can’t give up on the value of our labor, saying laboring is better than doing nothing. It is because we tend to believe that God is pleased with those who labor more than without. Yet, there is no need of human labor in the work of God, no difference whether there is human labor or not. It is because God has already accomplished His work.

Here, what we are to do is to testify as the work of God is. Yet, the testimony gets interrupted by us because we would boast what we have done, not delivering what God has done. At last, God is making His work presented while ruling such characters of men, so the presentation of the Word of God is the result of the work of God as well. Thus, there is no labor of ours profitable.

In Romans 9:13, Paul says, “As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.”

Who is loved and who is hated is the matter God has already determined. Then, think of all things Jacob did to receive blessings: making red pottage for birthright, deceiving Issac for the blessing of birthright, fleeing to the house of Laban, living there for fourteen years and so on. What would all things he did mean before the truth that God had chosen to love him even before He was born? That’s why all things we do for ourselves are vain and not profitable.

Do you still have a question in mind, ‘then what should I do?’ I’m not telling you what to do or what not to do, but I’m telling you not to think God is pleased with whatever we do. Don’t think we can change our destiny with what we do. Of course, the more we do, the more we get on earth, but if we can’t change our destiny, we can’t help accepting Verse 3, “The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose.”

The world is nothing but the one under the judgement of God by His covenant. Since the whole world is heading toward the conclusion, the judgement, the current riches and poverty is no meaning because the rich and the poor have the same end, judgement. This is the fixed destiny, which can never be changed by whatsoever. Thus all the labor under the sun is in vain.

Believers are the ones who have been called out to testify Jesus Christ among the people who can’t see what is vain. They claim that our all labor is vain and useless by preaching what Christ has done on the cross. Such character of being a believer begins with realizing the sinful nature and seeing the world at the cross where Jesus Christ died by shedding His precious blood!
