<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 4

Much Grief

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.

And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith.

I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and, behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.

That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem: yea, my heart had great experience of wisdom and knowledge.

And I gave my heart to know wisdom, and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this also is vexation of spirit.

For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow. (Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 KJV)

(Sermon)

The longer we live, the more we realize there is nothing we can do on our own in life. We can say we know even a little bit of what lies behind our lives as we are getting aware that we haven’t been living by ourselves. Then, that means we have been living by someone else. There is the Subject to rule over our lives. Believers confess that is God.

When we confess the Subject of our lives is God, those who are ignorant of the work of God think God will provide what they want. Yet, we also find that such idea is vain as well as we live in life because we can make sure of it on our daily lives.

The preacher rather says in Verse 13, “And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven: this sore travail hath God given to the sons of man to be exercised therewith”, meaning God gives men a heavy burden in labor. It disappoints us who hope tomorrow is better for us although today is difficult.

God wouldn’t listen to our wish lists. He would rather work according to His will and need. If there is our pain and labor, He works accordingly regardless of our situations. If so, our seeking God for our desire is nothing but vanity.

That’s why the preacher says in Verse 14, “I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.”

Look at all things done under the sun. Even though things are all different, what all things are pursuing is the same. All are working for what the individuals want. Yet, think of the fact that the reality on a daily basis is reigned by God. What do we produce in our works? It is the trace and fruit of sin. Nevertheless, we continue to follow rewards and joy from what we do. In the end, all these are chasing after wind.

We wouldn’t want to spend our energy and time for valueless things, calculating our efforts will also turn out to be valueless. That’s why we seek for what is valuable, ending up doing things like preaching the gospel, missionary, helping the needy. Yet, do you think it is possible that we would receive rewards from such acts?

Of course, it is very possible among men, encouraging each other and pursuing the same goal, but the thing is if God would also acknowledge such is valuable. The answer is ‘no.’ It is because the only thing that is valuable to God is Jesus Christ and His death on the cross. Thus, in His death, all human acts and works are revealed vain.

That’s why the preacher doesn’t talk about nihilism although he keeps saying ‘vanity’, beginning with Verse 2, “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” He doesn’t mean the life ends with death.

In Buddhism, there is a statement, ‘come empty, return empty’, meaning we leave our lives empty, so we shouldn’t live greedy. Nobody would deny it, but all live caught by what is visible.

Yet, that’s not what the preacher meant by vanity. It is understood that all are vain out of the forgiveness of God at the view of God’s grace.

Without the grace of forgiveness, one is dead although one is healthy. No matter what one labors, endeavors and receives, all are vain. One is still in meaningless life. This is our life of the behind story at the cross viewpoint, but since we don’t know it, we would still live for ourselves, which is spoken by the preacher as a satire with chasing after wind.

The grace of God that sent Christ to die on the cross for us to make us the holy people of God doesn’t require us to be neither valuable nor laboring before God, but to come to God as ones who would end in vain without Christ and to be ones who are thankful for the grace and love of forgiveness, given on the cross

Nonetheless, not knowing the will of God, we are disappointed with our life of faith. To such, the preacher says in Verse 18, “For in much wisdom is much grief: and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow.”

Our grief is the result of our life, laboring and endeavoring to fulfill our will. The obsession with self-will is revealed as grief. Obsession with ego and blessing makes us have much grief, and preachers are obsessed with visible churches.

In Psalm 90:8-9, it says, “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath: we spend our years as a tale that is told.”

Likewise, all of our days are merely passing in wrath with sins, revealed before God. Such people like us can do nothing to please God or remove His wrath. Otherwise, Christ wouldn’t have needed to die on the cross because we could have appeased God with our own valuable labor.

Thus, the cross is the evidence of our failure that we can’t please God with all of our endeavor and we are denied while passing into the tunnel of sins. Yet, the gospel comes to us as the light at the end of the tunnel, making us confess Jesus Christ is all for us and realize no work of ours is valuable before the grace of the cross.

In Verse 15, it says, “That which is crooked cannot be made straight: and that which is wanting cannot be numbered.”

Think that ‘crooked’ and ‘wanting’ is us. Can we be straight and numbered? Since Adam, we have been nothing but crooked and wanting. Even though we are seeking for our desire with much grief and worry, we don’t know this is vain.

Let me reiterate it. God doesn’t want us neither not to be crooked nor wanting. God would rather tell us to come to Him as we are aware of who we are. That is where believers are supposed to be in His infinite grace. When God lets us in toil and hardships, He teaches us that the true happiness is to know the work of God is fulfilled, not to get what we want with our efforts and choice.

In our life, full of labor and sufferings, what we endlessly regurgitate is dissatisfaction and complaints, which is the evidence that we are the enemy of God. Take a deep consideration of the love of God that He calls us, who are the enemy of God, into Christ in the forgiveness of our sins and makes us the holy people of God. The believer is the one who exists because of the labor and sufferings of Christ, shedding His most precious blood on the cross although there is nothing one has ever done!
