4.나의 사업을 크게 하였노라 내가 나를 위하여 집들을 짓고 포도원을 일구며
5.여러 동산과 과원을 만들고 그 가운데에 각종 과목을 심었으며
6.나를 위하여 수목을 기르는 삼림에 물을 주기 위하여 못들을 팠으며
7.남녀 노비들을 사기도 하였고 나를 위하여 집에서 종들을 낳기도 하였으며 나보다 먼저 예루살렘에 있던 모든 자들보다도 내가 소와 양 떼의 소유를 더 많이 가졌으며
8.은 금과 왕들이 소유한 보배와 여러 지방의 보배를 나를 위하여 쌓고 또 노래하는 남녀들과 인생들이 기뻐하는 처첩들을 많이 두었노라
<설교>
성경은 인간이 처한 현실이 무엇인가를 말합니다. 그런데 정작 인간은 성경을 보면서도 자신이 처한 현실에 대해서는 알지 못합니다. 이유는 인간이 기대하고 추구하는 현실이 따로 있기 때문입니다. 그 현실이 자신에게 이루어지고 그 현실을 사는 것만 기대하기 때문에 성경이 말하는 현실에 대해서는 닫힌 마음으로 일관하게 되는 것입니다.
1,2절에서 전도자는 “나는 내 마음에 이르기를 자, 내가 시험삼아 너를 즐겁게 하리니 너는 낙을 누리라 하였으나 보라 이것도 헛되도다 내가 웃음에 관하여 말하여 이르기를 그것은 미친 것이라 하였고 희락에 대하여 이르기를 이것이 무슨 소용이 있는가 하였노라”고 말합니다.
이 말에 인간이 추구하고 기대하는 현실이 모두 담겨 있습니다. 그것은 즐겁게 낙을 누리며 웃음과 희락이 넘치는 인생을 사는 것입니다. 그런데 이러한 인간의 현실과 성경이 말하는 현실은 전혀 일치되지 않습니다. 오히려 인간이 꿈꾸는 현실을 헛되다고 합니다. 그래서 성경이 말하는 현실은 애초에 인간의 관심과 무관한 것으로 등장하는 것입니다.
인간의 현실은 흙으로 만들어져서 흙으로 돌아가는 것입니다. 이것이 인간의 운명입니다. 누구도 이 운명을 바꿀 수 없습니다. 그래서 비록 현재는 낙을 누리고 웃음과 희락이 있는 인생이라 해도 실상은 흙의 존재로 웃고 즐기는 것일 뿐입니다. 따라서 인간은 흙으로 돌아가야 한다는 참된 현실에서 인생을 점검하고 판단해야 합니다.
하지만 인간은‘흙으로 돌아간다’가 아니라 육체의 낙을 누리고 웃음과 희락이 있는 인생만 기대하기 때문에 쉬지 않고 불만과 원망과 한숨만 드러냅니다. 그리고 자신이 원하는 웃음과 희락이 있는 인생을 위해 하나님을 찾는 것입니다.
이것이 우리의 형편이라면 이런 우리에게 하나님이 하시는 일은 무엇일까요? 그것은 우리를 인간의 참된 현실로 집어넣어서 내가 누구인가를 보게 하시는 것입니다. 그리고 흙으로 돌아갈 수밖에 없는 운명의 현실에서 유일하게 희망이 되는 것이 있음을 알게 하시고 그것을 붙들게 하십니다. 하나님이 붙들게 하신 그 희망이 기쁨이 되고 웃음이 되고 희락이 되는 것이야 말로 하나님이 택한 백성에게 이루신 참된 현실인 것입니다.
세상을 보면 웃음과 희락을 위해 삽니다. 이것이 인생의 의미로 깊이 박혀 있습니다. 그리고 웃음과 희락에 필요한 조건을 얻기 위해 고생하며 눈물과 수고로 삽니다. 결국 웃음과 희락을 위해 눈물을 흘리는 모순적인 현실에 붙들려 있는 것입니다.
여기서 인간이 알지 못하는 것이 하나 있습니다. 그것은 인간은 하나님의 기쁨을 위해 창조되었다는 것입니다. 즉 인간은 자기의 기쁨과 즐거움을 위해 지음 받지 않은 것입니다. 인간의 믿음이 항상 왜곡되어 드러나는 이유가 여기에 있습니다. 하나님의 기쁨이 아닌 자기 기쁨을 위해 하나님을 찾기 때문입니다.
인간은 웃음과 희락의 조건이 세상에 있다고 생각합니다. 그리고 그러한 조건을 가졌다고 생각되는 사람을 보면서 ‘저 사람은 행복하겠다’라며 부러워합니다. 과연 그럴까요? 삶의 형편과 환경이 다를 수는 있겠지만 인간은 어떤 형편에서도 평생 불만이 없는 만족과 웃음으로 존재할 수 없습니다.
3절에 보면 “내가 내 마음으로 깊이 생각하기를 내가 어떻게 하여야 내 마음을 지혜로 다스리면서 술로 내 육신을 즐겁게 할까 또 내가 어떻게 하여야 천하의 인생들이 그들의 인생을 살아가는 동안 어떤 것이 선한 일인지를 알아볼 때까지 내 어리석음을 꼭 붙잡아 둘까 하여”라고 말합니다.
인간은 즐거움을 위해서, 또는 근심에서 잠시라도 벗어나기 위해서 술을 찾기도 합니다. 하지만 그것도 헛될 뿐입니다. 사업을 크게 하고 집들을 짓고 포도원을 일군다 해도 그것들 역시 웃음과 희락으로 존재하지 못합니다. 노비를 사고 소와 양 떼의 소유를 누구보다 더 많이 가지고 기뻐하는 처첩을 많이 둔다 해도 그 역시 지속적인 만족이 되지 못합니다.
그래서 “모든 만물이 피곤하다는 것을 사람이 말로 다 말할 수는 없나니 눈은 보아도 족함이 없고 귀는 들어도 가득 차지 아니하도다”(전 1:8)는 말에서 세상에서 가능한 웃음과 희락은 없음을 실감하게 됩니다.
롬 14:17절에 보면 “하나님의 나라는 먹는 것과 마시는 것이 아니요 오직 성령 안에 있는 의와 평강과 희락이라”고 말합니다.
인간은 먹는 것과 마시는 것으로 웃음과 희락을 누리고 싶어 합니다. 그것이 육체가 추구하는 욕구입니다. 성령은 이러한 육체의 욕구를 부정하는 능력으로 오십니다. 그래서 성령 받은 신자는 욕구가 없는 인간이 되는 것이 아니라 자신에게서 끊임없는 흘러나오는 욕구를 죽음과 저주의 증거물로 보게 됩니다.
이처럼 죽음과 저주의 존재인 인간에게 웃음과 희락이 되는 것이 무엇일까요? 그런 것이 세상에 존재할까요? 그런데도 웃음과 희락을 기대하며 세상을 바라보는 것이 인간의 미련함입니다. 이런 우리에게 성령이 오셔서 욕구로 살아가는 인간의 현실을 보게 하시고 자신을 죽음의 존재로 알게 되며 유일한 희망으로 오신 그리스도께 소망을 두게 한다면 그것이야 말로 은혜이고 세상이 주는 것과 다른 웃음이며 희락인 것입니다.
사업을 크게 한다면 좋은 결과를 얻고 더 커지기를 바랄 것입니다. 자신보다 더 큰 사업을 하는 사람들을 보면 자기 것은 초라하게 보일 수밖에 없습니다. 자기를 위해 크고 좋은 집을 지어도 조금 지나면 싫증이 나고 더 크고 좋은 집을 꿈꾸게 됩니다. 포도원을 일구면 좋은 열매를 기대합니다. 그런데 열매가 좋지 않으면 그것이 실망이 되고 근심이 됩니다.
인생은 이러한 범주 안에서 모두에게 동일합니다. 먹고 마시는 것이 다를 뿐 나을 것도 모자랄 것도 없습니다. 그래서 웃음과 희락을 세상 것으로 얻고자 하는 것이야 말로 미친 것이며 아무 소용이 없는 헛된 일이라고 하는 것입니다.
성령이 오시면 이러한 세상의 실상을 바르게 보게 합니다. 죽음의 저주라는 현실에서 세상의 무엇도 답이 되지 않음을 알게 합니다. 그리고 하나님의 약속으로 오신 그리스도를 향해 눈이 뜨이게 합니다. 그리스도로 인해서 죄의 세력으로부터 해방되고 자유하게 하신 하나님의 긍휼과 자비하심을 알게 합니다. 이것이 성령 안에 있는 의와 평강과 희락입니다.
신자는 천하를 얻는 것보다 예수님을 알게 되는 것이 더 큰 기쁨인 것을 아는 사람입니다. 때문에 세상에서의 웃음과 희락을 위해 하나님을 찾고 기도하는 것이 아니라 예수 그리스도를 알아가는 은혜를 구하는 기도를 하게 됩니다. 세상에서의 복을 위해 예수님을 이용하는 것이 아니라 오히려 현재의 것을 잃는다 해도 예수 그리스도만은 놓치지 않게 해달라는 간절함이 있게 되는 것입니다. 이러한 신자에게 기쁨과 희락은 예수 그리스도일 수밖에 없습니다.
그래서 예수를 믿는 것은 교회를 왕래하는 수준으로 말할 수 없습니다. 구제하고 선교하는 것으로도 믿음을 말할 수 없습니다. 믿음은 세상을 향한 욕구로 예수에게서 멀어지는 것 같은 자신으로 인한 애통이 있게 하기 때문입니다. 이것이 성령으로 인한 신자의 새롭게 된 마음입니다.
우리는 여전히 전도자의 말처럼 인생의 낙이라는 헛됨을 포기하지 못하고 살아갑니다. 예수를 말하지만 우리 마음은 세상이 주는 웃음과 희락의 인생을 기대합니다. 이것이 우리의 실상이라면 결론은 분명합니다. 우리는 천국에 갈 수 없는 무능한 자이며 감히 천국에 들어갈 수도 없는 무가치한 자라는 것입니다.
이런 인간에게 긍휼과 자비의 마음으로 찾아오신 분이 예수 그리스도입니다. 때문에 신자는 긍휼과 자비의 마음으로 이루신 십자가의 은혜만으로도 기쁨과 감사와 평강에 있게 되는 것입니다. 이것이 그리스도 안에 있는 신자의 웃음과 희락이며 자기 백성을 찾으신 하나님의 기쁨에 참여되는 것입니다.
예수를 보내어 택한 백성을 찾으시는 것이 하나님의 기쁨이라면 신자가 예수님으로 인해 기뻐하게 되는 것은 하나님의 기쁨에 함께 하는 것입니다. 결국 신자의 기쁨과 희락은 그리스도 안에서 베풀어진 하나님의 은총입니다.
하나님은 우리를 그리스도의 부활의 영광에 앉히셨습니다. 죽음의 존재에게는 이것보다 더 큰 기쁨이 없습니다. 그래서 신자는 예수님 안에서만 행복할 수 있습니다. 구원의 하나님만으로 기뻐할 수 있는 세계이기 때문입니다. 예수님으로 인한 웃음과 희락이 있기 바랍니다.
Chapter 5
Laughter and Pleasure
I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?
I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.
I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:
I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:
I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:
I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:
I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts. (Ecclesiastes 2:1-8 KJV)

The Bible tells us the reality in which we are in, but we don’t know what it is because we have another reality we are seeking for. Since we live, dreaming for that reality, we come to ignore the reality the Bible shows us.
The Preacher says in Verse 1 and 2, “I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.
I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?”
In the two verses, there is all that man is seeking and wishing for. That is to live, enjoying full of laughter and pleasure. Yet, such reality and what the Bible tells us have nothing in common. The Bible says the reality man is dreaming is vain. That’s why the reality the Bible is talking about has nothing to do with our interest.
The reality of man is ‘made of dust’ and ‘return to dust.’ This is our destiny. No one can change it. Even if we might be enjoying laughter and pleasure now, the reality is that we are enjoying them merely as dust. Therefore, we ought to look at ourselves in this true reality, returning to dust.
Yet, as we wouldn’t think of the true reality but have laughter and pleasure, there are nothing but incessant complaints and sighs in our living, and we would even come to God for the laughter and pleasure that we want.
If this is what we are, what is God doing to such people like us? That is to put us into the true reality so that we can see ourselves and to let us realize the One, who is the only hope in such destiny, having to return to dust. The hope, which God has made us hold onto, is the true reality with laughter and pleasure God has done to His people.
Looking at the world, we know all live for laughter and pleasure, deeply rooted into the meaning of life. For this reason, all live, toiling and laboring. In other words, for laughter and pleasure, all are captured in tears and pain, which is a contradiction.
There is one thing man doesn’t know. That is, man is created for the pleasure of God. In other words, man is not created for the pleasure of man. That’s the reason why our belief is always proven as wrong, seeking for our own pleasure.
We believe the conditions of laughter and pleasure lie in the world and envy those who have them all, thinking, ‘they must be happy.’ Is it indeed so? Although it could be possible that all have different environments and situations, there is no one who has no complaints, living only with satisfaction and laughter throughout one’s living.
In Verse 3, it says, “I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.”
Man looks for alcohol for either pleasure or getting out of anxiety. Yet, it is also vain. Even if one builds a big house and business with many employees, it can’t give one laughter and pleasure either. Even if one has many servants and concubines with the most property, there is no satisfaction continually.
That’s why we realize there is no real laughter and pleasure in the world, looking at Verse 8, “All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.”
In the Book of Romans 14:17, it says, “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
We would like to enjoy happiness and pleasure by eating and drinking. It is fleshly desire. The Holy Spirit comes to us by denying it. Thus, those who are in Spirit don’t come to remove the fleshly desire but to continue to look at themselves in the fleshly desire as the evidence of death and curse.
Then, what is the laughter and pleasure for man, in death and curse? Does such thing exist in the world? Nevertheless, it is our foolishness that we still look for laughter and pleasure we want. Into such people like us, the Holy Spirit comes and opens our eyes to see the reality, nothing but deserve to perish while indicating to the only hope, Christ, which is the grace of God, the laughter and pleasure, which the world can’t give.
If one has one’s business, one wants to make it bigger. When one sees others whose business is bigger than that of one’s, one sees oneself pitiful. Even if one builds a big and beautiful house, a little later, one is sick and tired of it, dreaming a bigger one. If one cultivates a vineyard, one expects good fruit, but if it’s not good, one will be disappointed with it.
Our living is all the same under such category. Even though what we eat and drink may be different, there is no better or lacking. That’s why seeking for laughter and pleasure is a mad thing to do and total vanity.
When the Holy Spirit comes, we see the reality of the world in a right manner, making us aware that there is no answer for life in the world, under the death and curse. Furthermore, He illustrates us to see Christ, the promise of God, making us know the mercy and compassion of God, freeing us from the power of sin. This is the righteousness, peace and pleasure in the Holy Spirit.
Believers are the ones who know that the knowledge of Christ is far better than the possession of the whole world. Thus, they wouldn’t seek or pray for the fleshly laughter or pleasure but for the furtherance of the knowledge of Christ. They wouldn’t use Christ for their own sake but be desperate not to lose the sight of Christ even if they lost all they had. For them, the laughter and pleasure is nothing but Christ.
Therefore, believing in Jesus Christ can’t be measured by how long one has attended church meetings. Helping the needy or missionary can’t be either. It is because faith makes one lament over the fact that one in the fleshly desire is getting away from Jesus. This is the regenerated heart, created by the Holy Spirit.
As the Preacher says, we are still living in the same way, not giving up on the fleshly pleasure. Although we call the name of Jesus by lips, we want the laughter and pleasure inside. If it is our reality, the conclusion is obvious. We can’t go to heaven, and we don’t even deserve it.
To such, it is Christ, who came with the mind of compassion and mercy. Thus, believers can have joy, thankfulness and peace even only with the grace of the cross, overflowing the mercy and compassion. This is the laughter and pleasure of believers and participation of the joy of God, having found His own.
If the joy of God is to find His people by sending Jesus Christ, believers partake the joy of God by Christ. In other words, the joy and pleasure of believers is the grace of God, provided in Christ.
God made us sit at the throne of the glory of resurrection in Christ. There is no better joy than that for the dead like us. Thus, believers can be happy in Christ and Him and only. It is because the world in which they are can only be satisfied with God of salvation. I earnestly pray that we are found in laughter and pleasure by Jesus Christ!
