<설교>

Chapter 10

A Season and a Time

To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:

A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up;

A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. (Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 KJV)

(Sermon)

As the Preacher says in Verse 1, “To every thing there is a season, and a time”, all things in the world are connected with a season and a time. Yet, since all seasons and times are ruled by God, the Authority, there is no season or time we want allowed. Thus, it is what a believer in the obedience of God is to say, ‘Lord willing’, as God leads the reality.

Yet, we always complain about seasons and times given to us by saying, ‘Why now?’ We wish to make all times benefiting ourselves. In fact, we can’t deny that we would seek God for such purpose in our prayer.

We would never think that God is leading all seasons and times for His own glory, not ours. We would only expect them for our happiness. That’s why the Bible doesn’t acknowledge such faith we have since it is for our sake. In this sense, it may not be wrong to say that many christians are mistaken in the understanding of faith.

In Verses 2 and 3, it says, “A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up.”

What we easily miss when hearing the Preacher say ‘time’ is a season. If there is a time to be born and die, between the two events is a season. Since season is determined and led by God, when a season comes to an end, one dies or pluck up. Thus, thinking of it, we can come to realize we are allowed each given time by God.

‘Each time given by God’ doesn’t mean some special events but every moment in life. If there is a time to be born and die, it could be today because we don’t know when that is. If we see today in this light, we are to cry when there is time to cry or mourn when there is time to mourn in God’s permission.

Yet, we would like to repel the times to cry, mourn, lose and hate, which, we think, make us unhappy. Consequently, we are ignorant that even a time to cry is given by God, and take for granted of day by day, not knowing it is allowed by God.

People think they would live in the conditions they expect them to be. That’s why they tend to see their death day is still far although they acknowledge there is a time to die, forgetting times are not given to them as they wish them to be. As a result, we disregard all the times of waking up, washing, having breakfast and going to work are of God.

At last, we would be dull of God’s reigning the times. This is our reality of faith that we are living for the times we want, losing the thanksgiving of being given every single day in His grace while having only lip service.

Take a look into your life in the Word, “To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven.” If you get a car accident, it belongs to ‘there is time to be healthy and there is a time to be injured.’ Then, we come to realize that the season that we were able to walk until the time of the accident was given to us by His grace and the walk day by day was not of us.

Therefore, we come to learn that being healthy, unhealthy, crying and laughing are all of God’s permission, deeply rooted into our thanksgiving. This is what can be called the life by God in the relationship with Him.

The seasons and times of our gatherings for worship are not outcomes of what we have made. Although many have come and gone, it is not of anyone’s will or intention. All are controlled by God behind them, regardless of our thoughts or plans. That’s why we can feel every single day is fresh and mysterious although it may seem repetitive.

Yet, when one thinks one is suffering from the times and seasons, one comes to complain against God, saying, ‘why is God giving me such things since God is good and love?’, meaning one would live as one wishes. Although God is leading His people while giving His mercy and compassion to whom He will, we look for our own happiness over the reality.

Having faith means not to lose the mind that God intervenes and leads us in all situations. Faith makes us know all the times given by God are bringing us to the cross in His grace even in times to cry and mourn. It is the believer, called out by God.

That’s why Jesus says in Matthew 6:34, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”

What would it mean that we are worried about tomorrow since all the times and seasons belong to God? Even if we worry if things are done according to our will or not, all things are done in His will. Thus, it ought to be ours that looking up to Christ on the cross on a given day, not entangled by our worries, ‘how should I live today?’, or ‘what will happen tomorrow?’

In this aspect, it is true to say that the modern Christianity has no interest at all in faith because preachers teach the congregation to seek God in prayer for what they want. It is nothing but an irony to see that we seek God to remove God’s will, repelling the times allowed by Him.

Believers are in Jesus Christ. Whatever times are given to them, it is immovable that they are in Him. Such fact makes them realize they live and give thanks to God day by day. Since God is glorified by such believers, all times are the channels for His grace, not for our comforts or glory.

As Verse 8 says, “A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace”, it is vain to wish only for times to love and have peace. It is self-love seeking, by which looking for Jesus is hypocrisy and falsehood.

We must recognize that the world, full of self-love seeking, is nothing but befallen into the judgement of God, meaning that we, who can’t abandon our self-love, live, sensing that we are the objects of the judgement under the curse on our daily lives. Only then, can we come to realize every given day is a gift of God bit by bit. This is the wisdom.

No worry of ‘what if I have a time to cry?’ Some think they try not to cry at a time to cry because they think it is of faith, but it is a satanic temptation. It is because faith is to know ‘not having cried so far’ is not of us, not ‘laughing instead of crying.’

Seasons and times are all in God’s hand and He will fulfill them all. Therefore, believers just live as they are. When understanding it is the grace of God that we are captured by the purpose of God, not living for ourselves, such understanding will make us give thanks to God in all given times!
