10.하나님이 인생들에게 노고를 주사 애쓰게 하신 것을 내가 보았노라
11.하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨고 또 사람들에게는 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨느니라 그러나 하나님이 하시는 일의 시종을 사람으로 측량할 수 없게 하셨도다

우리가 항상 잊어버리고 생각하지 못하는 것은‘인간이 어떤 존재인가?’에 대한 것입니다. 우리는 인간을 무지하고 무능하고 어리석은 존재라고 말합니다. 그런데 그렇게 말은 하면서도 자기에 대해서는 그러한 시각으로 보지 않습니다. 아는 바가 있고 할 수 있다고 생각합니다. 그래서 ‘믿음이 있다면 그 믿음으로 살아야 하지 않느냐?’라는 말도 합니다. 믿음으로 사는 것에 대해서도 자신이 알고 있는 것을 바탕으로 해서 마치 하나님의 뜻인 것처럼 자신 있게 말하기도 합니다.
때문에 우리가 항상 인간에 대해 전제하고 있어야 할 사실이 하나 있습니다. 그것은 인간은 믿음이든 복음이든 하나님만이 하실 수 있는 모든 일에 대해서는 알지 못하는 무지한 자라는 것입니다. 우리가 안다고 생각하는 복음에 대해 말할 때도 이것이 전제된 가운데서 나오는 말이어야 합니다.
롬 11:33절에 보면 “깊도다 하나님의 지혜와 지식의 풍성함이여, 그의 판단은 헤아리지 못할 것이며 그의 길은 찾지 못할 것이로다”라고 말합니다.
하나님이 가시는 길을 인간이 찾지 못하는 것은 인간의 생각과 하나님의 생각이 전혀 다르기 때문입니다. 도무지 인간이 알 수 없고 예측할 수 없는 방식으로 하나님의 일을 이루시는 것이 그 이유입니다. 그런데 하나님이 행하시는 일에 대해 알게 되는 것이 있다면 그것은 인간이 공부하고 연구해서 알아낸 것이 아니라 하나님이 주시는 말씀의 능력에 의해 알게 된 것입니다.
9,10절에 보면 “일하는 자가 그 수고로 말미암아 무슨 이익이 있으랴 하나님이 인생들에게 노고를 주사 애쓰게 하신 것을 내가 보았노라”라는 말을 합니다.
하나님이 인생에게 노고를 주사 애쓰게 하셨다면 애쓴 것만큼 이익을 얻게 하셔야 한다는 것이 우리의 생각입니다. 내가 수고하고 애쓴 것에 대한 이익이 나 아닌 다른 사람에게로 가는 것을 당연하게 받아들일 사람은 없을 것입니다. 그런데 하나님은 일한 자의 수고로 인한 이익이 일한 자에게로 돌아가는 방식으로 일하지 않으신다고 합니다. 이러한 하나님의 방식에 대해 누구도 동의하고 싶지 않을 것입니다.
그런데 만약 일하는 자가 수고한 대로 이익이 있게 하지 않으시는 하나님의 방식을 환영하고 감사하는 사람이 있다면 그들은 누구일까요? 일한 것이 없고 수고한 것이 전혀 없는 사람들입니다. 일한 수고대로 이익을 받아야 하는 세상의 이치대로 하자면 돌아올 이익이 전혀 없는 일한 것이 없는 그들에게 하나님의 방식은 그야말로 환영할 수밖에 없는 은혜가 되는 것입니다.
롬 4:5,6절에 보면“일을 아니할지라도 경건하지 아니한 자를 의롭다 하시는 이를 믿는 자에게는 그의 믿음을 의로 여기시나니 일한 것이 없이 하나님께 의로 여기심을 받는 사람의 복에 대하여 다윗이 말한 바”라고 말합니다.
하나님의 구원은 일한 것도 없는 자에게 무조건 베푸시는 은혜의 방식으로 주어집니다. 그래서 우리는 구원에 대해서 아무 할 말이 없는 자일뿐입니다. 그런데 수고하고 일한 것이 있다고 생각하는 사람들에게는 불공평하게 느껴집니다. 다른 사람에 비해서 더 애쓰고 수고하고 일한 것만큼 다른 대우를 받아야 한다고 생각하기 때문입니다. 자신이 수고한 것이 있다 해도 그것으로는 구원될 수 없음을 모르는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 인간의 그 어떤 수고나 애씀은 하나님께 가치 있는 것으로 인정되지 않는 것입니다.
수 24:13절에 보면 “내가 또 너희가 수고하지 아니한 땅과 너희가 건설하지 아니한 성읍들을 너희에게 주었더니 너희가 그 가운데에 거주하며 너희는 또 너희가 심지 아니한 포도원과 감람원의 열매를 먹는다 하셨느니라”고 말씀합니다.
이처럼 수고한 것 없이 베푸시는 하나님의 은혜의 방식을 알고 인간의 수고를 수고로 여기지 않는 것이 하나님의 백성 됨입니다. 이러한 백성은 인간이 하나님을 찾고 믿는 것으로 등장하는 것이 아니라 오로지 하나님의 수고하심에 의해서 발생하는 것입니다.
이스라엘은 자신들의 수고와 애씀으로 하나님께 나아갈 수 있을 것으로 착각했습니다. 하지만 결국 실패로 끝났다는 것은 하나님은 인간의 수고와 애씀을 받지 않으심을 보여줍니다. 어떤 인간도 자기의 수고로 원하는 이익을 얻을 수 없다는 증거입니다.
사실 우리의 수고와 애씀으로 되는 것은 없습니다. 모든 것이 하나님이 주시는 것인데 내가 수고해서 얻었다고 착각하는 것입니다. 결국 우리는 수고하고 일한다는 것으로 인간이 죄의 존재라는 사실만 드러내는 것입니다. 결론은 우리가 일하고 수고하는 것도 하나님의 권세 아래 있다는 것입니다.
11절에 보면 “하나님이 모든 것을 지으시되 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨고 또 사람에게 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨느니라 그러나 하나님의 하시는 일의 시종을 사람으로 측량할 수 없게 하셨도다”라고 말합니다.
세상의 모든 때를 주관하시는 분은 하나님입니다. 그리고 때는 인간을 위해서가 아니라 하나님의 영광을 위해 조성됩니다. 이것을 두고 때를 따라 아름답게 하셨다고 말합니다. 하나님의 영공을 위한 때가 곧 아름다움이기 때문입니다. 그런데 우리는 나에게 이익이 되는 때를 아름다운 것으로 간주합니다. 그렇기 때문에 하나님의 영광을 위해 일하시는 시종을 사람은 측량할 수 없는 것입니다.
하나님은 우리가 무엇을 하든 그 모든 것을 하나님의 영광을 위해 사용하십니다. 그렇기 때문에 내가 수고했다고 해서 나의 이익으로 돌아와야 한다는 원칙은 인간이 원하는 것이지 하나님의 원칙은 아닌 것입니다.
영원을 사모하는 마음을 주셨다는 것은 영원의 세계가 인간의 수고, 애씀과는 무관하다는 것을 전제하는 것입니다. 만약 인간이 수고하고 애씀으로 영원의 세계로 나아갈 수 있다면 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주실 필요는 없기 때문입니다. 그래서 누구도 하나님이 영원을 사모하는 마음을 주시지 않는다면 영원을 사모할 자는 없습니다. 그럼에도 인간이 자신의 수고를 생각하고 일한 것에 대한 대가를 바라고 기대한다면 그것은 하나님의 원칙과 충돌 되는 것일 뿐입니다.
우리는 십자가에 피 흘리신 예수님의 수고로 인해 신자로 존재합니다. 우리가 일한 것이 아니라 주께서 일하셨고 지금도 살아계셔서 일하십니다. 우리가 일하고 수고한 것으로 되어지는 것은 아무것도 없다는 것입니다. 그런데도 죄가 용서되고 거룩한 신자로 여김 받는 것은 오로지 주의 수고 덕분이라는 것을 잊지 않아야 합니다. 일하지 않고 수고한 것도 없이 이익을 누리는 것입니다.
시 136:7-9절을 보면 “큰 빛들을 지으신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 해로 낮을 주관하게 하신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다 달과 별들로 밤을 주관하게 하신 이에게 감사하라 그 인자하심이 영원함이로다”라고 말합니다.
하나님이 지으신 빛들을 생각하면 우리의 수고로 산다고 말할 수 없게 됩니다. 우리가 어떤 수고를 한다 해도 빛들이 없이는 존재할 수 없기 때문입니다. 그래서 우리는 하나님의 은혜, 인자하심만 말하게 되는 것입니다.
사 60:15절에 보면 “전에는 네가 버림을 당하며 미움을 당하였으므로 네게로 가는 자가 없었으나 이제는 내가 너를 영원한 아름다움과 대대의 기쁨이 되게 하리니”라고 말합니다.
하나님은 이스라엘에게 버림을 당하고 미움을 당하는 때를 주셨습니다. 그런데 그 이유가 이스라엘을 하나님의 영원한 아름다움과 대대의 기쁨이 되게 하는 것입니다. 그래서 믿음은 나에게 좋은 때만 생각하는 것이 아니라 하나님이 주시는 모든 때가 나를 하나님의 아름다움과 기쁨이 되게 한다는 것을 아는 것입니다. 이런 이유로 일하고 수고한 것이 내게로 돌아오지 않는다 해도 괜찮은 것입니다. 때를 따라 아름답게 하시는 하나님의 일하심에 속해 있기 때문입니다.
측량할 수 없는 하나님의 일하심이 우리를 구원으로 끌어갑니다. 슬퍼하고 실패하는 때를 주시면서 아름답게 만드십니다. 불평하고 원망하는 현실에서도 하나님의 일하심은 여전히 계속되고 있습니다, 이것이 우리의 참된 현실입니다. 그래서 우리의 수고와 애씀으로 되는 것은 없는 것입니다.
신자는 자신이 수고한 것을 내어 놓는 것이 아니라 일하고 수고한 것 없이 주의 수고로 받았음을 고백할 뿐입니다. 비록 하나님이 하시는 일의 시종을 측량할 수 없지만 오늘도 은혜로 산다는 것 때문에 웃을 수 있습니다.
Chapter 11
The Work That No Man Can Find Out
What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?
I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end. (Ecclesiastes 3:9-11 KJV)

What we always forget and never think is ‘what are we?’ Although we often say man is ignorant and incompetent, we don’t see ourselves in that aspect, thinking we know something and are capable. That’s why we say, ‘if we have faith, shouldn’t we live accordingly?’ Even regarding faith, we boldly talk about how to live by faith based on our own knowledge as if we knew the will of God.
Thus, we must not forget one premise of man, that is, we, all men, are ignorant of the work of God, which can not be done otherwise no matter what it is such as faith or gospel. Even when we preach the gospel, which we think we know, we must say it based on that premise.
In the Book of Romans 11:33, it says, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!”
Why no one can search the ways of God is our thoughts and His thoughts are different. It is because He fulfills His work in the way we can not know or understand. Yet, if we come to understand the work of God somehow, it is not of our work or efforts but of the power of the Word He gives us.
In Verses 9 and 10, it say, “What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth? I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.”
It is our thoughts that if God let us labor, we should get what we labored for. There is no one who would agree to see the profit of one’s labor go to someone else. Yet, the work of God doesn’t go that way. I’m sure no one would agree with such way of God’s.
Then, what if there is one who would agree with the way of God, not getting the profits of one’s own labor? One must be the one who has no work or labor. According to the way of the world, getting what one has labored for, the way of God is most welcomed as the grace by those who have no work or labor.
In Romans 4:5-6, it says, “But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness. Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works.”
The salvation of God is given to those who have not worked. That’s why we can have nothing to say on salvation. Yet, for those who think they have done something, the salvation doesn’t seem fair, having mind that they should be treated better. However, they don’t know their labor can never save them. In other words, God never acknowledges our efforts or labor as valuable things.
In the Book of Joshua 24:13, it says, “And I have given you a land for which ye did not labor, and cities which ye built not, and ye dwell in them; of the vineyards and oliveyards which ye planted not do ye eat.”
Therefore, it is the people of God, who know how God gives His grace, and disregard their labor before Him. Such people can appear not by their seeking for God but by the work of God only.
The people of Israel thought they could come to God with their efforts and labor. Yet, God shows us their thoughts were wrong by rejecting their all work, meaning there is no one who can get what one wants as expected.
In fact, there is nothing done by our labor and efforts. It is all given by God, but we are mistaken, thinking we got what we worked for. At last, it is the evidence that we are nothing but sinful beings through the work and labor. Consequently, we learn that all we do, working and laboring, is under God’s authority.
In Verse 11, it says, “He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.”
It is God, who reigns all the times of the world. And, the time is not for us but the glory of God, which is the meaning of “He hath made every thing beautiful in His time” because all the times, glorifying God, are beautiful. Yet, we only consider good times for us beautiful. Thus, no one can find out the work that God is making solely for His own glory.
Whatever we do, God uses it for His glory. Thus, that we would like to get what we have labored for is a mere human principle, not God’s.
‘Set eternity in the hearts of men(NiV)’ must be stated on the fact that the world of eternity has nothing to do with men’s efforts and labor. Otherwise, God wouldn’t need to give us the eternity in our heart. Thus, there would be no one who has eternity in heart unless God gave one. Nevertheless, if one expects to get what one has labored for, it is nothing but collision with the principle of God.
We are believers by Christ, shedding His blood on the cross. It is not by what we have done but His work, and He is alive even now, working. That is, there is nothing done by what we do. Therefore, we must remember our being as believers is purely by His labor in His forgiveness. We are getting all the benefits without any efforts or labor of ours.
In Psalm 136:7-9, it says, “To him that made great lights: for his mercy endureth for ever: The sun to rule by day: for his mercy endureth for ever: The moon and stars to rule by night: for his mercy endureth for ever.”
Thinking of the lights God created, we can’t say we live on our own at all because we wouldn’t be able to survive without the lights. That’s why we come to praise the grace and mercy of God only.
In the Book of Isaiah 60:15, it says, “Whereas thou has been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through thee, I will make thee an eternal excellency, a joy of many generations.”
God gave Israel times of being forsaken and hated. The reason for that is to make them an eternal excellency and a joy of many generations. Thus, faith makes one know that God makes one an excellency and joy with all the given times, not think for oneself. For such reason, it is fine not to get what we have labored for because we belong to the work of God, making all things beautiful.
The work of God no one can fathom is leading us in salvation. While giving us times to lose and cry, He makes all beautiful. While we are resenting and complaining against God, He is still making His work. This is our true reality. That’s why there is nothing from our efforts and labor.
Believers are to confess that we have received all from what the Lord has done, not to present what we have done to Him. Although we can’t understand His work from the beginning to the end, we can smile with the fact that we live even today by the grace of God!
