<설교>
구원은 예수님의 대신 죽으심으로 성취되었습니다. 짧은 한마디의 말이지만 이 말에는 인간이 추구하는 모든 것을 부인하는 능력이 담겨 있습니다. 그것은 대신 죽으신 예수 그리스도의 의로움만이 참된 의가 된다는 것입니다. 예수님의 의가 아니면 구원될 수 없고 구원되지 않은 인간의 운명이 영원한 심판임을 생각하면 예수님의 대신 죽으심을 알지 못한 인간은 짐승과 다를 바 없는 처지일 수밖에 없습니다. 세상에서 어떤 위치에 있는가와 무관하게 ‘짐승과 같다’라는 판단을 받을 뿐입니다.
창 1:24절에 보면 “하나님이 이르시되 땅은 생물을 그 종류대로 내되 가축과 기는 것과 땅의 짐승을 종류대로 내라 하시니 그대로 되니라”고 말씀합니다.
하나님이 땅에 명령하여 짐승을 종류대로 내라 하신 것은 모든 짐승들도 흙으로 만드셨다는 것을 말해줍니다. 그리고 사람도 짐승과 같이 6일 째에 흙으로 만드십니다. 이것이 짐승과 인간의 공통점이기 때문에 인간이 짐승보다 우월하고 만물의 영장이라고 말한다 해도 죽으면 흙으로 돌아간다는 점에 있어서는 다르지 않습니다. 인간이 짐승보다 낫다고 할 것이 없는 것입니다.
이러한 인생에 대해 전도자는 하나님이 인간으로 하여금 자신이 짐승과 다름이 없다는 것을 깨닫게 하기 위해 시험하신다고 말합니다(18절). 그리고 19,20절에서“인생이 당하는 일을 짐승도 당하나니 그들이 당하는 일이 일반이라 다 동일한 호흡이 있어서 짐승이 죽음 같이 사람도 죽으니 사람이 짐승보다 뛰어남이 없음은 모든 것이 헛됨이로다 다 흙으로 말미암았으므로 다 흙으로 돌아가나니 다 한 곳으로 가거니와”라고 말합니다.
모든 인간은 인간이 짐승과 다르다고 생각합니다. 인간이 짐승을 지배한다고 생각하고 짐승이 할 수 없는 생각과 업적을 인간이 이루어 낸다고 생각하기 때문일 것입니다. 그래서 인간을 두고 ‘만물의 영장’이라며 스스로 높이기도 하지만 그렇다 해도 인간은 인생에 있어서의 중요한 문제 하나를 해결하지 못합니다. 그것은 곧‘죽음’입니다.
인간이든 짐승이든 죽음 후에 한줌의 재로 변해 있을 때를 생각해 보십시오. 똑같이 흙으로 돌아가는 죽음의 자리에서 사람이 짐승보다 뛰어나다고 할 것이 없는 것은 사실입니다. 따라서 자신을 가치 있는 존재로 인정받기 위해서 노력하고 힘썼던 모든 것들은 죽음에 의해 유익할 것이 없는 헛된 것으로 무너지는 것입니다.
이것이 인생의 결말임을 생각하면 결국 인간은 흙으로 돌아가기 위해서 한 평생 무거운 짐을 지고 울고 웃으며 살아왔다는 의미가 됩니다. 그래서 세상에서 수고하여 이룬 것이 무엇이든 짐승과 똑같이 흙으로 돌아간다는 것을 생각하면 인간을 잘났다고 할 수 없고 무엇을 이루었다 해도 모든 것은 헛되다는 말을 하게 되는 것입니다.
16절에서 “또 내가 해 아래에서 보건대 재판하는 곳 거기에도 악이 있고 정의를 행하는 곳 거기에도 악이 있도다”라고 말하는 것처럼 인간이 있는 곳에는 필연코 악이 있습니다. 악은 재판하는 곳에도 정의를 행하는 곳에도 존재하고 드러납니다. 인간 자체가 악에게 지배당하고 있기 때문입니다. 이러한 인간이 심판을 받는 것은 당연한 것이고 그런 점에서 짐승보다 나을 것이 없는 것입니다.
하나님을 믿는 우리의 관심이 어디로 향해 있는지를 생각해 보십시오. 천국을 말하면서도 정작 모든 관심은 세상으로 향해 있습니다. 세상에서 번영하고 풍요를 누리는 자기 세계를 꿈꾸고 그러한 현실을 이루는데 하나님이 도움주기를 기대하기도 합니다. 그런 마음을 감추고 십자가에 피 흘려 죽으신 예수를 믿는다고 하는 것이 우리입니다. 이런 우리가 짐승보다 낫다고 할 수 있는 것이 무엇일까요?
마 6:29,30절에서 “그러나 내가 너희에게 말하노니 솔로몬의 모든 영광으로도 입은 것이 이 꽃 하나만 같지 못하였느니라 오늘 있다가 내일 아궁이에 던져지는 들풀도 하나님이 이렇게 입히시거든 하물며 너희일까보냐 믿음이 작은 자들아”고 말씀합니다.
우리는 솔로몬의 영광을 입고 싶어 합니다. 하지만 예수님은 솔로몬의 모든 영광으로 입은 것이 꽃 하나만 같지 못하다고 하십니다. 왜냐하면 내일 아궁이에 던져지는 들풀도 하나님에 의해 존재하기 때문입니다.
우리는 솔로몬의 영광을 최고의 인생을 사는 것으로 생각하지만 그것은 인생을 자기 것으로 여기는 것입니다. 하나님만 의지하는 마음이 아닌 것이고 결국 원하지 않는 인생에 대해서는 불만과 불평으로 반응할 것입니다. 이처럼 인간은 어떻게 산다 해도 죄를 품고 살아가는 것이 현실입니다. 그리고 죄로 인해 죽고 흙으로 돌아갑니다. 이런 인생을 두고 짐승보다 낫다고 할 수 없는 것은 당연합니다.
인간의 본래 자리는 흙입니다. 흙이라는 본래 자리에서 시작한다면 현재 주어진 모든 것을 하나님이 허락하신 몫으로 자신에게 과분한 것으로 보게 됩니다. 이것이 주어진 자신의 일에 즐거움이 있게 합니다. 자신을 가치 있게 해줄 더 나은 것을 기대하는 것이 아니라 하나님이 나 같은 자를 부르시고 예수 안에 있게 하신 것 자체가 과분한 은혜가 다가오면서 모든 것을 하나님이 나 같은 자를 사용하시는 하나님의 일로 보기 때문입니다.
그래서 전도자는 22절에서 “그러므로 나는 사람이 자기 일에 즐거워하는 것보다 더 나은 것이 없음을 보았나니 이는 그것이 그의 몫이기 때문이라 아, 그의 뒤에 일어날 일이 무엇인지를 보게 하려고 그를 도로 데리고 올 자가 누구이랴”는 말을 하는 것입니다.
우리는 인생에 대해 죽는다는 것까지는 알고 있습니다. 하지만 죽음 뒤에 일어날 일이 무엇인지에 대해서는 알지 못합니다. 물론 하나님의 심판대에 서게 되고 지옥과 천국으로 가게 된다는 생각은 할 것입니다. 하지만 죽음 이후의 세계를 안다고는 할 수 없습니다. 다만 성경의 지식을 머리에 담고 있을 뿐입니다.
그래서 만약 죽은 자를 다시 데려 와서 죽음 다음의 일을 보게 해준다면 믿음에 도움이 되지 않는가? 라는 생각을 하게 됩니다. 죽음 이후에 지옥에 간 자를 다시 데려와서 지옥에 대해 말해준다면 하나님을 믿게 되지 않을까? 라고 생각하는 것입니다.
부자와 나사로 이야기에서 지옥에 간 부자가 아브라함에게 그런 요청을 하였지만 아브라함은 그들에게 모세와 선지자가 있으니 그들에게 들으면 된다고 했을 뿐입니다. 모세와 선지자들에게 듣지 않으면 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나는 자가 있다고 해도 권함을 받지 않는다는 것입니다. 부자의 생각은 나사로를 보내서 인생 뒤에 일어난 일을 말해주면 형제들이 자신이 있는 곳에 오지 않을 것이라는 생각을 하지만 부자가 여전히 알지 못하는 것은 천국과 지옥은 하나님에 의해 이미 결정된 사항이라는 것입니다.
그래서 우리는 처음부터 죄 가운데서 죽음의 존재로 태어난 것이고 당연히 심판을 받고 지옥에 가야 할 존재이기에 짐승과 다를 바 없다는 것을 인간에 대한 기본적 시각으로 세우고 하나님이 행하신 일을 봐야 하는 것입니다. 돈을 소유하고 세상이 부러워 할 번영을 이룬다 해도 흙으로 돌아 갈 인생이라는 것을 잊지 않는다면 인생에서 중요한 것은 예수 그리스도라는 것을 실감할 것입니다.
우리는 항상 세상을 닮고 싶어 합니다. 세상이 사는 것처럼 살고 싶은 유혹에서 벗어나지 못합니다. 소유한 것이 적다는 이유로 스스로를 초라하게 보거나 자기 일에 즐거움도 사라집니다. 현재의 것을 하나님이 허락하신 몫으로 생각하는 것이 아니라 인생을 즐겁게 해줄 것으로만 보는 것입니다. 이처럼 자기 인생에 집착함으로써 하나님의 은혜와 긍휼이 함께 하는 인생의 복됨과 가치를 잃게 되는 것입니다.
세상은 어디에도 악이 존재합니다. 따라서 세상에 대해 하나님이 행하시는 일은 심판입니다. 비록 세상이 하나님의 심판을 무시하며 행복한 자기 인생을 추구하지만 그것과 상관없이 하나님은 심판을 행하십니다. 이러한 세상 현실에서 신자는 인간이 짐승과 다를 바 없는 존재라는 사실에 매일 자각되어야 합니다. 인간으로서 돌아갈 자리가 흙이라면 그러한 존재를 택하여 부르시고 예수 안에 있게 하신 하나님의 행하심이 은혜가 됩니다. 이 은혜가 있는 것이 신자입니다.
Chapter 13
A Man and a Beast
And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there.
I said in mine heart, God shall judge the righteous and the wicked: for there is a time there for every purpose and for every work.
I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts.
For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity.
All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.
Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?
Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him? (Ecclesiastes 3:16-22 KJV)
(Sermon)
Salvation is accomplished by the death of Jesus Christ. Although it is a short expression in a few words, it has the power to deny all that men pursue. That is, the death of Christ, the Substitute, can only be the righteousness. Thinking that no one can be saved without the righteousness of Jesus and unsaved people are under the eternal condemnation, it is obvious that those who do not know the death of the Substitute are no different from beasts. No matter what social positions they have, they are viewed ‘beasts-like.’
In the Book of Genesis 1:24, it says, “And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.”
That God said to the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind means that He created all beasts with the ground. And then, He also created the man with the dust of the ground on the sixth day. Since this is the common thing between man and beast, there is no difference that all go back to the dust after death. We can’t say we are superior to beasts.
To such people like us, God says in Verse 18 to 20, “I said in mine heart concerning the estate of the sons of men, that God might manifest them, and that they might see that they themselves are beasts. For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; so that a man hath no preeminence above a beast: for all is vanity. All go unto one place; all are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.”
We all think we are different from beasts. It is probably because we think we can conquer them and achieve things they can’t. Thus, we lift ourselves up by saying, ‘man is the lord of all creatures’, but man can’t solve the important matter on his own, that is, death.
Whether man or beast, think of the time all turn out to be handful of dust after death. It is true that we are not different from them at the seat of death. Therefore, all that we strive to be more valuable beings are broken down into pieces by death.
Keeping the mind that it is the end of life, it could mean that we all have lived to go back to the dust while carrying heavy burdens with cries and laughters. No matter what one has achieved in the world, it can be said that all is in vain in the thought that one goes back to the dust.
As Verse 16 says, “And moreover I saw under the sun the place of judgment, that wickedness was there; and the place of righteousness, that iniquity was there”, wherever man is, there is inevitably wickedness. In the place of judgement and the place of righteousness, there is iniquity. It is because all men are conquered by it. Thus, such man deserves the judgement, no different from beasts.
Think of what we, so-called believers, are interested in. We might say the kingdom of heaven but our all interests are toward the world. We even wish God to help us to realize what we dream of in the world, being rich and prosperous. It is we that say we are believers while hiding such minds. Can we say we are better than beasts?
In Matthew 6:29-30, it says, “And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?”
We would like to wear the glory Solomon had. Yet, the Lord says it is not better than a flower in the field because the flower is by God even though it is cast into the oven tomorrow.
Although we view the glory of Solomon as the best life in the world, it is to consider our life as ours. It is not the mind dependent on God, complaining against God for things not hopeful. Likewise, it is our reality that we live in sin however we live. Furthermore, we go back to the dust. It is no wonder to say we are not different from the beasts.
Our original position is the dust. Keeping that in mind, we can perceive all things given to us are of God in His full of grace, which makes us happy. It is not that we expect something to make us better but we see the grace that God has called us and let us in Jesus Christ, using us through all things in His work.
That’s why the Preacher says in Verse 22, “Wherefore I perceive that there is nothing better, than that a man should rejoice in his own works; for that is his portion: for who shall bring him to see what shall be after him?”
We know all die but don’t know what is after that. Of course, we think all will be standing at the judgement of God and there will be heaven and hell. Yet, it can’t be said that we know what is after death. It is mere knowledge we have obtained from the Bible.
That’s why we think if we could bring one back from death to let us know after death, it would help us of faith. If we heard of hell, it would be beneficial for faith.
In the story of a rich man and Lazarus, although the rich man in hell asked Abraham to do such, Abraham rejected his favor by saying that they could hear Moses and the prophets. If his brothers wouldn’t hear Moses and the prophets, they wouldn’t hear the one live back from death either. The rich man thinks the brothers wouldn’t be where he is after hearing Lazarus if he backed to life, but what he still doesn’t know is that heaven and hell is the matter of God’s decision.
Thus, we ought to look at the work of God in the mind that we are born dead beings, deserving nothing but the judgement of God and hell, no different than beasts. Then, we will realize all importance is Jesus Christ no matter who has achieved what, knowing all will go back to the dust.
We would look forward to the world. We are always in the temptation that we would like to live in the way the people in the prosperity of the world live. We have no joy, looking at our feeble possession. We don’t consider things given to us as the grace of God but what should make us happy. Likewise, we lose the sight of the value and blessings in life as we are obsessed with our own happiness in the world.
There is wickedness everywhere in the world. Thus, what God does to the world is judgement. Even though people in the world ignore it, pursuing their own happiness, God does work His judgement. In such reality, we, believers, ought to remember everyday we are not different from the beasts. Since the dust is where we go back, it is the grace of God that He has chosen and called us and let us in Christ. It is the believer that is in such grace!
