<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 15

The Better Quietness

Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.

The fool foldeth his hands together, and eateth his own flesh.

Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit. (Ecclesiastes 4:4-6 KJV)

(Sermon)

We can see there is no conflict when those who have different religions talk about what they pursue in their religions, meaning Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestant, and Confucianism come to an agreement. Of course, there might be some conflicts if they say which one is superior or their god is the only true god, but as long as they share what they teach, it would be fine.

For example, there would be no one disagreeing with Verse 6, “Better is an handful with quietness, than both the hands full with travail and vexation of spirit.”

All people pursue peace over the matter of religion. It is common to know that possession can’t guarantee peace even if the possession is great, thinking the possession would rather create fights and divisions. Thus, everyone would agree with the verse.

That’s why many say, ‘teachings in the different religions are the same.’ I can’t say it has nothing to do in Christianity with ‘religious pluralism’, echoed by many preachers.

Yet, if we can hear some nuances that Christianity says something similar to what other religions say, we can diagnose that it is because there is a loss of the value of covenant, meaning that it is the loss of the value of the cross of Jesus Christ, who is the Finisher of the covenant. Therefore, we should recognize that when we interpret the Bible, it must be the direction of the value of the cross, not human knowledge, sense or experience.

In Verse 4, it says, “Again, I considered all travail, and every right work, that for this a man is envied of his neighbour. This is also vanity and vexation of spirit.”

All in the world live with their labor and talent. Since there are differences in labor and talent, it is true that the differences cause to produce different outcomes, resulting in envy and jealousy. That is, no one can congratulate others for their prosperity without jealousy. When we see someone who is better and more just than us, we wouldn’t respect him or her but look for something negative in jealous mind.

It is not a matter of some but universal for all. That’s why it is naturally accepted by all that there are the envious and the envied. Thus, let us not say, ‘don’t be jealous of others’ while meditating the passage. Instead, we ought to notice that all evil natures are revealed before the Word of God no matter how hard we try to cover our jealousy and sinful nature with moral behaviors.

In 1st Corinthians 12:26, it says, “And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it.”

We can say this is the essence of the church, meaning, ‘all can share what they have and no one claims one’s ownership. This can be seen when all view things occurring by the work of God. It is the relationship when seeing the work of God, not living by labor and talent of their own.

In such relationship, there is no superiority or inferiority but the grace, accomplished by Christ. Since this is the world of the life, completed by Him, there is no boasting of efforts or skills of human beings. Thus, when such being seen, it is the church, not losing the value of the covenant, and it is testified by the Holy Spirit.

That people envy and are envied due to works and gifts means that they don’t see their living is the place where God is working. They just complain by saying ‘why me?’ when seeing the differences of their incomes. In such world, we should ponder if it is right to pursue prosperity in the name of faith while holding the value of the covenant, the value of the cross.

Even if we are prosperous as much as we are envied by others, the power of the salvation is on the covenant of God. Hence, we come to realize that the wealth by efforts and skills are also in vain in the aspect of the judgement of God, the last day. It is because there is nothing we can grasp without the work of God. Knowing such is the wisdom, by which we can be in quietness.

I have told you the world wants quietness. I’m sure so do you. If so, as the Preacher says, is it OK to have full in one hand only? It means a little. In other words, can you be in peaceful mind if you have less than others? Even if we say yes in knowledge, we can’t deny we still want to have full in our two hands.

God is ruling over all in the world as the Living God, not as an abstract nor idealistic one. His work includes our daily lives. Thus, whether we have full in one hand or two hands, it is of God.

Even if one has more talents and efforts than others, one might have less because how much we come to have is not of us. Thus, if one is envied by one’s neighbors due to one’s labor and talent, it is the evidence that the neighbors ignore the fact that all are reigned by God.

Then, what attitude should a wise believer show the neighbors? Should he or she judge the neighbors have no faith and hate them? If having jealousy is no act of faith, we ought to know being envied is no act of faith either because all react with jealousy to superior neighbors to themselves.

Believers are not those who are not jealous but those who recognize they are not seeing God while being jealous of others because it is wisdom. They find the ignorance that they still see their possessions although the value of life is in Christ.

If this is what believers are, they ought to be able to say to the envious neighbors, ‘having full in two hands can’t be salvation.’ Furthermore, it is the love of neighbors to tell them since Christ is the power of salvation, although having full only in one hand is fine as long as believing in Christ. Therefore, ‘handful with quietness is better’ is possible in Him.

The condition of having peace is not on possession at all. It is true that the more possession we pursue, the more complaint and dissatisfaction we end up having. Since we don’t see how much we have is of the unilateral work of God, we lose the quietness. Thus, it is not wrong to say that we are always in the loss of quietness whether full in two hands or one hand.

If it is our situation, what we need first is to see all things are done by God in faith and know Christ is what God has prepared and fulfilled for His people. It is because knowing Christ is in salvation, called to the world of the cross, regardless of possession.

That’s why Christ is always alive full in the hands of believers. As they look at Him only, they can experience He is the Peace whether they have or not. Being aware of the judgement of God, believers know things without Christ are all vain like catching winds!
