‘로또’라는 말에 가장 먼저 생각되는 단어는‘인생 역전’일 것입니다. 요즘은 당첨금액이 인생을 역전할 정도까지는 아니라고 하지만 처음 시판 당시만 해도‘인생 역전’이라는 슬로건으로 선풍적인 인기를 끌었습니다. 그리고 현재도 일반인에게는 꿈같은 액수의 당첨금을 받습니다. 당첨만 되면 인생 역전까지는 아니어도 더 많은 것을 누리게 되는 것은 사실입니다. 하지만 당첨이 인간의 실력이나 재주로 되는 것이 아니기 때문에 많은 사람들이 초월적 존재로 생각하는 신의 도움을 구하는 것입니다.
기독교인 가운데도 하나님의 도움으로 인생을 역전 시켜 새로운 인생을 살고자 하는 희망으로 교회를 찾는 사람이 많습니다. 그러한 희망을 노골적으로 드러내지는 않는다 해도 로또가 지갑에 들어 있다면 하나님께 기도하고 싶은 유혹이나 하나님의 도움으로 당첨되었으면 하는 바람이 없다고 할 수 없습니다.
이러한 현실을 보면서 느끼는 것은 인간이 죽음을 잊고 산다는 것입니다. 하나님을 믿든 믿지 않든 모든 인간에게 가장 확실한 불변의 사실은 죽음의 존재라는 것입니다. 죽음의 죄의 결과입니다. 따라서 인간이 죽음의 존재라는 것은 곧 죄의 존재라는 뜻이고 죄로 인해 육신이 흙으로 돌아가는 것으로 인생이 마감되는 것입니다. 이것이 인간의 인생이기에 인생 역전이라는 말은 무의미할 뿐입니다. 전도자의 말대로 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것입니다.
13,14절의 “가난하여도 지혜로운 젊은이가 늙고 둔하여 경고를 더 받을 줄 모르는 왕보다 나으니 그는 자기의 나라에서 가난하게 태어났을지라도 감옥에서 나와 왕이 되었음이니라”는 내용을 보면 인생이 역전 되었다고 할 만한 사람이 등장합니다. 가난한 자로 태어나 옥에까지 갇히게 된 소년입니다.
세상에 가난한 자로 태어났다는 것은 힘없는 비천한 존재라는 뜻입니다. 거기에 무슨 일인지 모르지만 옥에까지 갇혀 있다면 세상으로부터 무시와 천대 받을 조건을 모두 갖추고 있는 셈입니다. 인생을 비관할 수도 있고 살아갈 희망과 기쁨을 다 잃어버린 상태일 수도 있습니다. 그런데 그런 그가 왕이 되었다면 말 그대로 인생 역전이 아닐 수 없습니다. 가장 밑바닥에서 최고 권력을 가진 왕의 자리에 올랐으니 누가 봐도 개천에서 용 난 것이고, 인생에 역전 된 것입니다.
또 15절을 보면 “내가 본즉 해 아래에서 다니는 인생들이 왕의 다음 자리에 있다가 왕을 대신하여 일어난 젊은이와 함께 있고”라고 말합니다.
세상은 돈과 권력을 가진 자를 따릅니다. 돈과 권력이 힘이기 때문에 힘 있는 자를 가까이 함으로써 덕을 보고자 하는 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 가난하여 옥에 갇혔을 때는 무시를 받았겠지만, 왕이 된 후에는 많은 사람이 함께 하고 따르게 되는 것이 세상 이치고 흐름입니다.
이렇게 권력을 가지고 곁에 많은 사람을 두게 되는 역전을 이루었다면 그 남은 인생은 행복과 기쁨과 세상 영광으로 가득하리라고 예상할 수 있습니다. 분명 왕이 된 현재만 생각하면 행복한 인생을 살 것이라고 누구도 의심하지 않을 것입니다. 세상이 꿈꾸는 행복의 조건이 그것이기 때문입니다.
그런데 전도자는 16절에서 “그의 치리를 받는 모든 백성들이 무수하였을지라도 후에 오는 자들은 그를 기뻐하지 아니하리니 이것도 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것이로다”라고 말합니다.
많은 사람이 왕을 대신하여 일어난 젊은이와 함께 한다 해도 결국 모두는 자기중심적인 존재입니다. 즉 왕을 위해 함께 하는 것이 아니라 왕과 함께 함으로 예상되는 자기 이익을 위해 함께 하는 것입니다. 이것이 인간의 속성입니다.
그렇다면 왕의 자리에서 물러났을 때 세상의 반응은 어떨까요? 전도자는 그를 기뻐하지 않는다고 말합니다. 왕의 자리에서 물러나 권력이 사라지면 함께 할 이유도 사라지기에 그를 더 이상 기뻐하지 않게 된다는 것입니다. 이러한 인간성은 예수님을 따랐던 사람들에게서도 찾아볼 수 있습니다.
많은 사람들이 예수님이 행하신 기적을 보고 예수님을 따랐습니다. 이들에 대해 예수님은 “예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표적을 본 까닭이 아니요 떡을 먹고 배부른 까닭이로다”(요 6:26)라고까지 말씀하신 것을 아실 것입니다.
심지어는 제자들도 예수님의 나라가 임하면 자신들의 수고에 대한 보상을 받게 될 것을 기대하였다가 예수님이 붙들리고 십자가에 못 박히자 모두 도망을 치게 됩니다. 메시아로 알았던 예수님이 힘없이 붙들려 죽는 것을 보면서 더 이상 예수님께 기대할 것이 없다고 생각된 것입니다.
해 아래의 인생은 다르지 않습니다. 누구나 자기를 사랑하고 자기를 위해 삽니다. 왕이 된 사람에게 함께 한다 해도 자기를 위한 것임을 생각한다면 왕의 자리에서 물러났을 때 그를 기뻐하지 않을 것이라는 것은 춘분히 예상할 수 있는 일입니다. 그렇기 때문에 지금 왕의 자리에 있고 많은 사람이 함께 하고 따른다 해도 그로 인한 즐거움과 만족은 영원할 수 없습니다.
무엇보다 중요한 것은 신자는 세상의 모든 일을 십자가의 시각에서 봐야 하는 것입니다. 인간은 죽음의 존재이며 예수님의 피로만 죄가 용서되고 생명의 세계로 들어갈 수 있다면, 과연 세상의 어떤 일이 나의 생명과 연관이 있는가라는 시각에서 볼 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다. 복권에 당첨되고 삶의 환경과 조건이 한 순간에 바뀌는 인생 역전을 이루어졌다 해도 그것이 과연 생명의 문제와 연관이 있는가를 생각해야 합니다.
만약 인생 역전이라는 것도, 세상이 꿈꾸는 복이라는 모든 것들도 생명과 연관 되는 것이 아니라면 헛되어 바람을 잡는 것일 뿐입니다. 왜냐하면 인생 역전도 잠시 동안의 꿈처럼 끝나게 될 것이고 결국 죽음의 존재로 영원한 사망에 들어갈 것이기 때문입니다. 때문에 우리가 세상을 바라보며 추구하고 원하는 것을 이루기 위해 수고하는 모든 것은 헛된 것입니다.
성경에서 인생이 역전되었다고 할 수 있는 대표적인 사람을 꼽으라면 나사로입니다. 본문에서 언급되는 가난하게 태어난 젊은이처럼 나사로도 가난하게 태어났을 것입니다. 그리고 가난한 비천한 존재로 죽었습니다. 세상에서의 인생만 두고 판단하다면 나사로에게 인생의 인생은 비참함 그대로이고 실패라고도 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 죽음의 이후의 세계에서 나사로의 인생은 달랐습니다. 부자는 지옥으로 나사로는 천국으로 역전된 것입니다.
우리는 가난한 자가 왕이 되는 그런 행운, 반전의 기적이 나의 인생에 있기를 원하는 마음을 감출 수 없습니다. 하지만 왕이 되어도 그 권력과 기쁨과 즐거움이 영원히 계속되는 것은 아닙니다. 또한 왕이라는 권력이 우리를 생명에 있게 하지도 않습니다. 다만 예수 그리스도만이 우리의 생명이 되시기 때문입니다. 그래서 인간이 죽음의 존재라는 사실에는 항상 민감하게 반응해야 하는 것입니다.
가난하여도, 왕이 되어도, 부자가 되어도, 불변의 사실은 하나님 앞에서는 모두가 죽음의 존재요 저주의 존재라는 것입니다. 이것이 인간의 실상이라는 것은 십자가에서 선명하게 드러납니다. 피 흘리고 죽으신 예수님을 보게 되면 저주 받아 죽은 그것이 나의 실상임을 알게 될 뿐입니다. 그런데도 세상의 권력과 부요의 정도로 축복과 저주를 판단하는 것은 그 자신이 저주의 존재임을 스스로 드러내는 것에 지나지 않습니다.
왕이 되고 많은 사람이 자신에게 함께 한다 해도 그것이 지속되지 못할 것을 알고 인간에게 희망을 두지 않는다면 그는 자신의 죄의 속성도 한다고 할 수 있습니다. 그래서 나대신 십자가에 못 박히신 주를 바라보게 되는 것입니다. 그래서 우리가 교회로 모이는 것은 누군가에게 사랑 받고 인정받기 위해서가 아니라 내가 죄의 존재라는 것이 드러나면서 주께만 모든 희망을 두기 위해서입니다. 이것이 진정한 인생 역전입니다.
다시 말씀드릴 것은 세상의 모든 것을 세상의 기준과 가치관이 아니라 십자가 안에서 바라보고 판단하여야 한다는 것입니다. 무슨 일이든 좋아하고 실망하고 불평하기 전에 ‘이것이 과연 나의 생명과 연관이 있는 것인가?’를 생각할 수 있어야 한다는 것입니다.
생명과 연관이 없는 일에 울고 웃는다면 우리는 인생의 가장 중요한 것을 잊고 있다는 증거입니다. 그렇다면 그는 비록 세상에서 가장 위대하고 영광되고 힘 있는 자리를 얻었다 해도 그것은 헛되어 바람을 잡으려는 것일 뿐입니다.
Chapter 17
Although One Becomes A King
Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished.
For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.
I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.
There is no end of all the people, even of all that have been before them: they also that come after shall not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit. (Ecclesiastes 4:13-16 KJV)

What the word, ‘lottery’, reminds us of is ‘rags to riches.’ Although the winning amount nowadays may not be that much, it was very popular with the phrase when it began. Even today, the first prize is ‘a dream come true’ to most ordinary people, thinking they can make their lives far better than now. Yet, since it solely depends on luck, which is not the range of human capability, many ask gods for that.
Even many christians look for God for the same reason. Although they may not say it outwardly, it is not too much wrong to say that they would get help from God if they had a lottery ticket in their pocket.
Here, we can learn that we, men, live, forgetting death. Whether or not one believes in God, the unchangeable is that we all die. Death is the result of sin. Thus, that we all die means we are all sinners, ending life as returning to dust. Since this is man’s life, ‘rags to riches’ is meaningless. It is like catching wind as the Preacher says.
Taking a look at Verses 13 and 14, we can see someone from rags to riches, “Better is a poor and a wise child than an old and foolish king, who will no more be admonished. For out of prison he cometh to reign; whereas also he that is born in his kingdom becometh poor.” It is the one who is born poor and put into prison.
That he is born poor means the one with misery and weakness. Moreover, he is in prison with a reason we know not, making him despised and ignored by others. He could have been in pessimism and total loss, but if he becomes a king, it is nothing but ‘rags to riches.’ As he moved from the bottom to the top in social status, he turned his life around more than anyone else.
In Verse 15, it says, “I considered all the living which walk under the sun, with the second child that shall stand up in his stead.”
People in the world follow one who has money and power. Since money and power influence the world, we would like to be close to ones with them for our benefits. Hence, although he was despised in prison, after he became a king, it is seen in the world that many follow him.
Then, it can be expected that he has nothing else but enjoying the rest of his life with happiness and pleasure as being glorified. No one would doubt about it because all the conditions for happiness are fulfilled.
Yet, the Preacher says in Verse 16, “Surely this also is vanity and vexation of spirit.”
Even if many follow him, who took the throne of the king, it is true that all are selfish beings. That is, they are not with the king for him but for themselves by being close to him. This is our nature.
Then, what would be the reaction of the world when he is dethroned? The Preacher says people would not rejoice in him, meaning his being dethroned gives the followers nothing, resulting in being away from him. Such can also be found the followers of Jesus.
Many followed Him as witnessing Him, performing many miracles. To such, the Lord says in John 6:26, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”
Even His disciples expected to get some kinds of rewards for following Him when His kingdom comes, but they all abandoned Him as He was captured to be crucified on the cross, assuming He would no longer be useful for them.
All life under the sun is not different from one to another. We love ourselves and live for ourselves. We can know those who are following the king for themselves will forsake him when he is dethroned. Therefore, the joy and happiness caused by the power and throne can’t last long at all.
The most important thing is that believers must view things at the point of the cross. That is, as all are dead beings in sin, which can only be forgiven by the blood of Jesus, believers ought to be able to find what is related to the life in the world. Although one has turned one’s life around from rags to riches, we have to think it it has something to do with the eternal life.
If all, so-called blessings in the world, has nothing to do with the life, it is like pursuing wind to catch because the pleasure will end soon and all will be in the eternal condemnation in the end. Thus, what we are pursuing while looking at the world is all in vain.
A good example who is from rags to riches in the Bible is Lazarus. Like the youth in the passage, Lazarus must have been born in a poor family, and he died as poor. In the aspect of the world, his life was misery and loser. But the life after death was different. The rich man went down to hell and Lazarus went up to heaven.
We can’t hide our mind, wishing to turn our life around like the young man who became the king. Yet, even if we became a king, the power or joy wouldn’t last forever. In addition, the power can’t give us the eternal life either because Jesus Christ is the only One, who is the life for us. That’s why believers should be sensitive to the fact that we are nothing but the dead beings.
No matter who you become such as poor, king or rich, the one thing that is not changed is that all die under the curse. It is the cross that reveals such truth. Believers come to realize the crucifixion is theirs when they see Jesus shed His blood. Nevertheless, if one judges others with social status or possession, one reveals oneself as the cursed.
If one knows one’s power on the throne is not forever even though many are following one, it can be said that one knows one’s sinful nature. That’s why one comes to see the Lord on the cross as the Substitute. Thus, we are gathered unto the name of the Lord at church to be neither acknowledged nor loved by others, but revealed as sinners, putting all hope onto the Lord. This is the true rags to riches.
Let me reiterate it. We must think and judge all things at not the world point of view but in the cross. Whatever situation we are in, we should ask ourselves if it is related to the life before complaining.
If we laugh or cry for the things not related to the eternal life, we are forgetting the most important thing in life. If so, even if one has gotten the greatest power and highest position in the world, it is all in vain like catching wind!
