<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 18

Before God

Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.

Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.

For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words. (Ecclesiastes 5:1-3 KJV)

(Sermon)

The disciples were looking up to the heaven as the Lord was ascending. Then, in the Book of Acts 1:11, it says, “Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.”

Most christians understand the meaning of the verse as the Lord would come again in the same figure that the disciples saw Him. Then, what about the generations afterwards? They would have nothing else but having to try to imagine it, thinking it is OK to believe that He would come again.

When the Lord comes again, the glory of heaven will fully be revealed, meaning that what He did on earth was for the heaven’s glory. If so, although His work seemed trivial in the world’s point of view, it is to proclaim the glory of heaven.

That’s why we can’t evaluate the faith of believers in the common sense of the world. Otherwise, it would be seen only ‘useless’, resulting in ‘being ignored.’

Faith of believers is linked with the glory of heaven, which will be revealed when the Lord comes back. It is not for earthly benefits. Therefore, we ought to focus on the work of God, who gives the faith to such foolish people like us.

In Verse 1, it says, “Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil.”

In the Old Testament, there is a place, called ‘the temple.’ The Israelites thought they would meet God, thinking God was pleased with their offerings, which led to a thought God would bless them with what they wanted. However, it is solely a man-centered thought. The Preacher says it is the evil mind of the silly.

Even though it is true that the temple was deemed the House of God in the Old Testament, it was not. The House of God can’t be built by the hand of man. Otherwise, the people would ask God for blessings they want by claiming their work done at the temple.

The silly give offerings to God in the same manner, thinking God would be pleased with what they do. It is the understanding of faith in the human society. People say they believe in His coming, but it is not the glory of heaven but their pragmatic part of life.

Our problem is ‘not giving up on self-righteousness.’ It is our deeply rooted nature in mind. We look at ourselves while offering to God, captured by the mind that God would give us back for what we did good. It is the House of God to destroy such thoughts of ours.

In Mark 11:17, it says, “And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

The House, which God said in the Book of Isaiah, is not by the hand of man but the temple, built by the Son, sent by God. Whereas the temple by man is full of man’s labor, there is nothing in the temple, built by the Son, but full of His work and righteousness. Thus, if one prays in the temple, one’s will and work is naturally subdued in the prayer. This is the phenomenon of faith in the House of God, ‘in Jesus Christ.’

As spoken earlier, christians tend to think their service as their righteousness. Even when hearing the Word of God, they justify their faith, looking at themselves. Yet, it is not to hear the Word of God. It is not to come before God but miserable under the curse while being ignorant of it.

That it is better for one to hear the Word of God means to have a chance to know one is the cursed being by hearing it. On the contrary, those who give offerings to God can’t have the chance but looking at themselves.

In Chapter 10 of Luke, we can see two women: Martha, being busy to serve the Lord and Maria, hearing the Word of the Lord. When Martha saw Maria, she asked the Lord to tell Maria to help her. Yet, the Lord says Maria chose the good part.

It doesn’t mean hearing the preaching is better than serving at church. Maria’s hearing the Lord gives her an opportunity to think she is a sinner, leading her to the grace of the Lord, forgiving the sin in her thanksgiving.

Yet, the seat of serving like Martha’s leaves nothing but comparing by saying, ‘I am doing better than you.’ We can learn what the Lord meant if we think of what can be the glory of God. It is because where the Word of God is reveals our sinful nature, leading us to the grace of the Lord in rejoicing, which can be the glory to God. That’s why Verse 1 says, ‘Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God’ because no one can enter it alone.

If we keep that in mind, we can know the meaning of Verse 2, “Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.”

The world exists by the will of God. It is the reality of the world that God shows His will in the world and fulfills it accordingly. Thus, we must obey the will of God in the fact that God is in heaven and reigns us. Yet, it is our wrong doing that we would use God to fulfill our wills, making us have a lot of excuses and reasons.

That’s why the Lord says in Matthew 6:7, “But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.”

Before God, all are dead. Yet, believers are the ones who have come to receive the life through the sacrifice of God. Therefore, knowing the sacrifice of God, what believers can say is nothing but the confession that they live by the sacrifice of God. It is by the Holy Spirit, not for themselves.

We always feel what we are given is insufficient, far from what we want. That’s why we always ask God to give us something we lack. However, if we think of the fact that we are alive before God by His sacrifice, the true insufficiency is that we are not enjoying what we are given in His infinite grace.

Living before God is uttered in the relation to voice and silence. If we know we are in the will of God, not ours, we come to realize it is a sin that we say our words for our dreams. Our reality is of God by His will. Therefore, believers are to say all things as the ones before God!
