10.은을 사랑하는 자는 은으로 만족하지 못하고 풍요를 사랑하는 자는 소득으로 만족하지 아니하나니 이것도 헛되도다
11.재산이 많아지면 먹는 자들도 많아지나니 그 소유주들은 눈으로 보는 것 외에 무엇이 유익하랴
12.노동자는 먹는 것이 많든지 적든지 잠을 달게 자거니와 부자는 그 부요함 때문에 자지 못하느니라

우리가 세상을 살면서 끊임없이 뱉어내는 것은 불평과 불만입니다. 그리고 그 안에는 염려와 불안이 자리합니다. 이것은 모두 자신의 욕망이 충족되지 못한 가운데서 발산되는 것들입니다. 그런데 어느 정도 욕망이 충족된 것으로 보이는 소위 재산이 많은 풍요로운 자들도 불평과 불만의 소리가 있고 염려와 불안이 있는 것은 어떻게 이해해야 할까요?
빈곤한 자의 눈에는 불평할 것이 없고 걱정할 것도 없어 보이는 풍요로운 자들에게도 불평, 불만이 있다는 것은 어느 인간에게도 만족이 없다는 뜻입니다. 육신의 속성이라고 할 수 있는 욕망은 각자 자신이 처한 처지에서 확산되기 때문입니다. 가난하든 부하든 자신의 현재 형편에서 더 가치 있고 높은 것을 추구하기 때문에 가난한 사람이 부자가 된다 할지라도 끝까지 만족이 없는, 불평불만이 있는 괴로운 인생을 사는 것입니다.
모든 인간에게는 자신을 중심으로 한 자기의 뜻이 있습니다. 그리고 자기의 뜻이 이루어지기를 원하지만 과연 하나님은 인간 각자가 원하는 자기의 뜻을 이루어주어야 하는 것입니까? 그것이 하나님다움이고 믿음일까요? 더 큰 문제는 자기의 뜻이라는 것이 고정되어 변하지 않는 것이 아니라 상황에 따라 항상 변하고 더 높이 향상된다는 것입니다. 때문에 만족이 없는 것은 당연한 이치입니다.
이러한 인간에 대해 전도자는 “은을 사랑하는 자는 은으로 만족하지 못하고 풍요를 사랑하는 자는 소득으로 만족하지 아니하나니 이것도 헛되도다”(10절)라고 말합니다.
은을 사랑하고 풍요를 사랑하는 것은 인간의 뜻이 은과 풍요로 향해 있기 때문입니다. 은이 있고 풍요롭게 됨으로써 원하는 인생을 살 수 있다고 생각하는 것입니다. 결국 자기 사랑입니다. 은이나 풍요가 사랑의 대상이 아니라 자기 사랑을 실현할 도구로 은이 필요하고 풍요롭게 되기를 바라는 것입니다.
이처럼 인간이 자기 사랑에 매몰되어 있을 때 놓치는 것은 자신의 모든 것이 하나님으로 말미암은 은혜라는 것입니다. 은도 풍요도 하나님이 주신 은혜인데 그 은혜의 정도가 불만스러운 것입니다. 이것은 인간이 하나님과의 관계에서 인간됨을 생각하지 않기 때문입니다.
하나님과의 관계에서 인간은 악한 죄의 존재이며 심판의 대상일 뿐입니다. 은과 풍요를 어느 정도 누리는가와 무관하게 물 한모금도 받아 마실 자격이 없는 것이 인간입니다. 우리가 하나님을 믿고 있다는 것을 빌미로 해서 사랑 받을 자격이 있다고 생각하지만 큰 오산입니다. 하나님을 믿은 적이 없기 때문입니다. 다만 우리의 수준에서 믿고 있다고 착각하고 있을 뿐입니다. 즉 교회를 다니는 것과 상관없이 여전히 죄 아래 있는 죽음의 존재입니다.
하나님이 이스라엘을 광야로 들어가게 하시고 거기서 사흘 동안 물을 얻지 못하게 하십니다. 그리고 마라라는 곳에 이르러 물을 발견했지만 써서 마실 수 없습니다. 이스라엘은 당연히 모세를 원망합니다. 모세 때문에 물이 없어 죽게 되었다는 것입니다.
같은 인간의 입장에서 이스라엘의 원망은 충분히 이해할 수 있습니다. 하지만 이스라엘이 가는 길에 평안이 있어야 하고 하나님이 그들에게 먹을 것과 마실 물을 항상 준비해 놓으셔야 하는 이유가 뭔가? 를 묻는다면 이스라엘도 우리도 할 말이 없게 됩니다. 인간에게는 자격이라는 것 자체가 없기 때문입니다. 쓴물은 이러한 인간됨을 돌아보게 하신 하나님의 일인 것입니다. 즉 이스라엘이 아무짝에 쓸모없는 쓴물과 같은 존재라는 사실을 보게 하시는 것입니다.
그리고 다시 모세에게 나무를 던지게 하셔서 쓴물을 단물 되게 하신 것은 쓸모없는 이스라엘을 단물 되게 하기 위해 하나님이 일하신다는 것을 보여줍니다. 쓴물이 단물 되기 위해 나무가 쓴물에 던져집니다. 이처럼 쓸모없는 쓴물과 같은 존재인 우리에게 예수님이 오시고 그 피로 인해서 예수 안에 있게 됨으로 단물이 된 것입니다. 따라서 단물의 단물다움은 쓴물이었던 자신에게 던져진 나뭇가지를 기억하는 것입니다. 즉 예수님의 희생을 기억하는 것이 하나님의 백성다움인 것입니다.
쓴물을 단물 되게 한 것은 하나님이 지시한 나무가 쓴물에 던져졌기 때문입니다. 다른 무엇을 던져 넣었다 해도 쓴물은 쓴물 그대로일 뿐입니다. 우리의 인간됨도 다르지 않습니다. 사망의 존재인 쓸모없는 우리가 은을 가지고 되고 재산이 많아지고 부자가 된다 해도 그것 때문에 쓸모 있는 인간으로 바뀌는 것은 아닙니다.
엡 1:3-4절을 보면 “찬송하리로다 하나님 곧 우리 주 예수 그리스도의 아버지께서 그리스도 안에서 하늘에 속한 모든 신령한 복을 우리에게 주시되 곧 창세 전에 그리스도 안에서 우리를 택하사 우리로 사랑 안에서 그 앞에 거룩하고 흠이 없게 하시려고”라고 말합니다.
우리가 세상에 존재하기 전에 이미 하나님이 세우신 계획이 있는 것입니다. 그것은 우리에게 하늘의 신령한 복을 주시고 거룩하고 흠 없는 존재로 삼으셔서 하나님의 사랑을 감사하고 찬송하게 하는 것입니다. 쓸모없는 죽음의 존재를 하나님의 사랑을 찬송할 자로 택하시고 부르신다는 것입니다. 이것이 하나님의 작정하심 안에 있는 우리 인생임을 안다면 인생의 문제로 불평하고 걱정하고 염려할 수 없는 것입니다.
12절에 보면 “노동자는 먹는 것이 많든지 적든지 잠을 달게 자거니와 부자는 그 부요함 때문에 자지 못하느니라”고 말합니다.
노동자와 부자 중 어느 쪽이 세상을 살만하다고 생각할까요? 당연히 부자입니다. 가난한 노동자는 세상을 사는 일이 괴로울 수밖에 없습니다. 세상에 미련 두지 않고 속히 떠나고 싶다는 마음은 가난한 노동자에게 더 가까울 것입니다. 하지만 부자는 세상을 살만 한 곳으로 보게 됩니다. 돈이 있으면 얼마든지 배부르게 먹고 즐길 수 있기 때문입니다.
이것을 생각하면 노동자는 세상에 뜻을 두지 않고 먹는 것이 많든 적든 하나님이 주신 것으로 감사할 수 있는 마음이라고 할 수 있습니다. 하지만 부자는 세상에 마음을 두지 않을 수 없습니다. 자신의 부요함으로 얼마든지 즐길 수 있는 곳이 세상이기 때문입니다. 하지만 자신의 것을 지켜야 하고 자기 힘으로 원하는 것을 이루는 방식이기 때문에 뜻대로 되지 않는 일에 대해 고민하며 잠을 잘 수 없는 것입니다.
세상에는 노동자와 부자가 있습니다. 그 차이는 정도에 따라 극과 극으로 벌어집니다. 그리고 사람들은 가난보다 부자 되는 것을 복으로 인정합니다. 비록 믿음이 좋아 보인다 해도 가난하다면 ‘복 받았다’는 말을 하지 않습니다. 다만 ‘하나님이 언젠가는 복으로 갚아 주실 것입니다’는 듣기 좋은 말로 위로 아닌 위로를 할 뿐입니다.
그런데 이러한 세상 구조에서는 하나님을 찬양하는 것이 가능하지 않습니다. 부자들은 자신의 잘됨으로 감사하고 찬양한다 해도 가난한 노동자는 찬양할 수 없는 입장이 되기 때문입니다. 그래서 하나님은 가난과 부요와 상관없이 인간은 쓸모없는 존재이며 그리스도의 희생으로 거룩한 백성이 되었음을 가르치시는 것입니다. 그리고 노동자든 부자든 자신의 것을 보지 않고 다만 그리스도만으로 감사하고 찬송하게 되는 거룩한 세상을 나타내는 것이 하나님이 행하시는 일입니다.
잠을 달게 잔다는 것은 세상에 의지할 것이 없는 상태를 뜻합니다. 물론 실제적으로 재산이 없는 가난한 것을 의미하는 것이 아니라 세상의 어떤 것도 인간의 쓸모없음을 바꾸지 못함을 알고 은이나 풍요로움에 가치를 두지 않는 것입니다. 그리고 십자가에서 피 흘리고 희생하심으로 우리를 죄가 가려진 거룩한 백성 되게 하신 예수님의 은혜 안에 있는 것이야 말로 평강이고, 불만과 염려가 없는 잠을 달게 자는 것이라고 할 수 있습니다.
세상의 풍성함이 인생을 만족하게 할 수 있다고 기대하는 것은 미련하고 무지한 생각일 뿐입니다. 노동자든 부자든 사람이 드러내고 있는 것은 죄의 본성입니다. 노동자는 노동자의 자리에서, 부자는 부자의 자리에서 만족하지 못하는 것으로 세상의 헛됨을 열심히 드러내며 인간으로서 할 일을 하고 있습니다. 그래서 노동자든 부자든 자기에게 뜻을 두고 산다면 인생은 괴로울 수밖에 없습니다.
이것이 인간의 형편인 것을 알게 되면 예수 그리스도의 피로 거룩함을 얻었고 예수로 말미암아 하늘의 신령한 복을 받은 것이 감사가 될 것입니다. 그리고 십자가에 피 흘리신 예수님이 우리의 모든 것이 되고 만족이 됨을 경험하게 될 것입니다. 그래서 신자에게 참된 평강과 부요의 복은 그리스도입니다.
Chapter 21
A Laborer And A Rich Man
He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes?
The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. (Ecclesiastes 5:10-12 KJV)

What we are continually doing as living in this world is to express complaint and dissatisfaction, which is rooted into anxiety and worry. All is of the fact that our desire is not sufficiently fulfilled. Then, how should we understand those wealthy people whose desire seems to have been achieved still live complaining and being dissatisfied in anxiety and worries?
That means there is no one living with satisfaction in the world because the desire, a characteristic of our flesh, is spread over the situation in which we are laid. Whether one is rich or poor, all pursues to be better and higher, even if a poor man becomes rich, the person suffers from the complaints and dissatisfaction, wanting to be richer endlessly.
Every human has his or her own will for him or herself, wishing to fulfill it. Then, should God help him or her do so? Do you think that is being God or of faith? The thing is that the will is changeable, moving toward higher. No wonder there is no satisfaction.
To such, the Preacher says in Verse 10, “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.”
The reason of loving silver and abundance is because our will dwells for them, thinking they can fulfill what we want for life. After all, it is self-loving. Silver and abundance is not the object of our love but tools to achieve our self-loving.
What we are missing while being buried in such self-loving is the grace of God that all that is given to us is of God. Although both silver and abundance is of God, we don’t think what we are given is enough for us. It is because we don’t think of ourselves in the relationship with God.
We are all evil and the object of the judgement of God in the relationship with God. We don’t even deserve to drink water regardless of the amount of silver and abundance we possess. It is a huge mistake if we think we deserve to be loved because we believe in God because there has never been a moment we have believed in God. We are just dead beings under the sin no matter how long we’ve attended church meetings.
God let the Israelites enter the wilderness and let them be thirsty for three days. Although they found water at a place called ‘Marah’, they couldn’t drink it because it was bitter. They, no doubt, complained against Moses, saying he led them there.
We can fully understand them in their shoes. Yet, if we think of why God has to provide them with water and lead them in peace, the Israelites as well as we become speechless because all sinners deserve nothing but death. The bitter water was a tool for them to see themselves, meaning they were nothing useful like the bitter water.
Furthermore, God showed them Moses throwing a piece of wood, making the water sweet, telling them it is the work of God, who makes the bitter water, themselves, sweet. A piece of wood was thrown into the water. Likewise, to make us, the useless, the sweet water, Jesus came to the world, letting us in Him by shedding His blood. Thus, being sweet water dwells in the remembrance of the wood, thrown into us. That is, being a child of God is in the remembrance of the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus.
The change from the bitterness to sweetness is because of the piece of wood thrown by God and nothing else. Our nature is the same. Even if we, dead beings, become wealthy, we aren’t changed to the useful.
In the Epistle to the Ephesians 1:3-4, it says, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love.”
There is the will of God before the foundation of the world. That is to make us be thankful and praise God for His love while making us sanctified in the spiritual blessings. He makes us, the useless, the ones who praise His love by choosing and calling us. Knowing it is our life in His determination, we can’t complain or worry about things in the world.
In Verse 12, it says, “The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep.”
Which one is better to live in the world between a laboring man and a rich man? Of course, it is a rich man. A poor laboring man must have a hard time in life. He has more of a mind of leaving the world without regrets. Yet, a rich man views the world as a livable place, thinking money can make it so.
Keeping that in mind, ‘the laboring man’ means that one is thankful to God for whatever is given, not viewing the world as a livable place. On the contrary, to the rich man, the world is necessary because he can enjoy living there with his possession. Yet, he has to keep the possession he has accomplished and can’t help being worried about the things he can’t handle according to his will, causing him an insomnia.
There are laboring people and rich people in the world. The difference between the two groups can go as far as the extremity depending on the degrees. And people would think being rich is a blessing. Even if one seems faithful, if one is poor, people don’t consider one blessed, giving one a mere comfort of saying, ‘God will bless you.’
Yet, in such structure of the world, there is impossibility to praise God because poor laboring people can’t do it even if rich people praise God for their success. That’s why God is teaching us that all men are useless, sanctified only by the sacrifice of Christ no matter how poor or rich we are. It is the work of God that whether one is poor or rich, one doesn’t look at oneself but present the holy world, being thankful and lifting up God for Christ.
‘The sweet sleep’ means that one has nothing to depend on in the world. Of course, it doesn’t mean one possesses nothing but knows there is nothing to change our nature, putting no value on silver and abundance. What’s more, it means to be in Christ, by whose sacrificial blood we are forgiven, bringing us no worries or anxiety.
Wishing to be abundant in the world is nothing but ignorance and foolishness. Whether one is rich or poor, what one displays is the sinful nature. Both a laboring man and a rich man show their dissatisfaction wherever they are, which is in vain. Thus, whether one is poor or rich, the life has no peace if one live for valuing one’s will.
Realizing it is who we are, we can come to thank God that we have been sanctified by the blood of Christ and blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places. And we will know the Lord Jesus Christ, who shed His precious blood on the cross, is our sufficiency and everything for us. Therefore, the true peace and richness for believers is nothing but Christ!
