<설교>

Chapter 24

If You Don’t See Happiness

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:

A man to whom God hath given riches, wealth, and honour, so that he wanteth nothing for his soul of all that he desireth, yet God giveth him not power to eat thereof, but a stranger eateth it: this is vanity, and it is an evil disease.

If a man beget an hundred children, and live many years, so that the days of his years be many, and his soul be not filled with good, and also that he have no burial; I say, that an untimely birth is better than he.

For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness.

Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.

Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place? (Ecclesiastes 6:1-6 KJV)

(Sermon)

We always have questions and complaints about what God does because the things of God are in conflict with our desires. As it says in 5:17, “All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness”, there is no other way than we are dissatisfied with why such happens in life. Although we know all are the results of sin, we would, again, wrestle to protest why God brought the world under sin.

In the passage, the Preacher says the unhappiness. That is, even if one is rich, prosperous, honored and has children as many as a hundred and live as long as a thousand years twice, all must return to one place without seeing happiness.

In Verse 6, “Yea, though he live a thousand years twice told, yet hath he seen no good: do not all go to one place?”, ‘all go to one place’ means to return to death.

All go to one place, called ‘death.’ The Preacher says the reason for that is not seeing happiness. Thus, we all die because we don’t see happiness. In other words, we are all born as ones who see no happiness, which is our unhappiness under the sun. After all, men are unhappy beings.

Nevertheless, we would endeavor to see happiness with all our hearts, wishing to be happy by catching riches, wealth, honor, health and longevity. Then, some are successful and some are not. If so, can those who are successful see happiness?

The Preacher says in Verse 2 that even if one receives all one wishes, God doesn’t allow one to enjoy them but give them to a stranger, which is vanity. Although riches, wealth and honor seem to have obtained by one, all are of God, which means God could allow a stranger to enjoy what God gave one. Then, one will experience endless vanity and disappointment. Nonetheless, it is our foolishness that we still wish to be happy with riches, wealth and honor.

Besides, in Verse 3, it says that even if one has one’s children as much as a hundred and longevity, one is not satisfied with such happiness. In ancient societies, having many children and longevity were considered blessings, but we aren’t satisfied with them, meaning we don’t see happiness. Thus, we can conclude that we are the beings that can never be able to see happiness because we have no satisfaction.

To such, the Preacher says in 1:8, “All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.” Likewise, it is no wonder that men can’t see happiness as there is no satisfaction in us.

Why we have no satisfaction is because what we want keeps changing and expanded. We would like to have one at first, but then later two. We think we would be fine if we have one, but after we get it, we would want another. After all, our wishing is non-stop and getting bigger, ending up with no satisfaction with one achievement. As we live in contradiction, not being able to control ourselves, it is obvious that we see no happiness.

Then, if we see happiness, we can’t say it is the result of our wish fulfilled because, as already mentioned, our satisfaction and joy can’t last long. Since we always feel lacking, if we see happiness, that means something else God gives us becomes happiness. Those who see happiness in what God gives would return not to one place all go but another God prepares, called, ‘the life.’

In Deuteronomy 10:13, it says, “To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good?”

The Israelites are happy when they keep the commandments of God, but if they don’t, there is no happiness in them. Then, we can say that there is no happiness in us because no one can keep the commandments and statutes of God. Nevertheless, we would see happiness in life, meaning we waste our time for what we can’t obtain. That is, happiness doesn’t belong to us.

We are all in captivity of curse, which is unchangeable even if we live as long as two folds of a thousand years. In such reality, no matter how long we live, we all go to one place. Even if we see happiness in riches and wealth of the world, since it is not the happiness God gives for those who keep God’s commandment, it is vanity, returning to the one place.

Yet, as we close our eyes to the reality that we are under the curse and wish for visible things in the world, we always feel lacking while comparing with others. It is all our foolishness that we don’t see vanity as vanity.

In Verse 4 and 5, it says, “For he cometh in with vanity, and departeth in darkness, and his name shall be covered with darkness. Moreover he hath not seen the sun, nor known any thing: this hath more rest than the other.”

There would be no one who envies the miscarried in womb. As Job curses his birthday, he says lamentation in Job 3:11, “Why died I not from the womb? why did I not give up the ghost when I came out of the belly?” Yet, such lamentation is from the situation that he lost all and saw no value of himself in agony.

We are mistaken that we think we will be happy if we make our dream come true, not seeing our life is unhappy. The ignorance of the judgement of God for those under the curse of sin leads us to the false dream of happiness. Even if one lives as double as a thousand years, there is no happiness for those who return to one place, death. This is our true reality.

Now, we ought to see another kind of happiness. That is the happiness that newly appears in the blood of Christ on the cross that a new creature enjoys. Those who see such happiness will go to the kingdom of the life God has prepared. This is the grace of God and happiness for those who are in the judgement under the curse.

In Deuteronomy 33:29, it says, “Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the LORD, the shield of thy help, and who is the sword of thy excellency! and thine enemies shall be found liars unto thee; and thou shalt tread upon their high places.”

God proclaims that the Israelites are happy even though they don’t deserve to enjoy happiness for they can’t keep the law of God. According to the condition to be happy, they are far from it. In spite of that, they are happy because the salvation of God is the condition, and it is the one and only condition.

Israel ought to see happiness in God’s salvation. Seeing the mercy and compassion of God in the salvation is to see happiness, which is the happiness enjoyed by the new creature. Those seeing such is the true Israel and the children of God. Then, if one expects to seek for happiness, one hasn’t seen it yet.

Even if we have riches, wealth and honor, we are unhappy. This is our reality. Look up to the salvation of Christ, dying on the cross, at the seat of the judgement, which is heavily unhappy. There is no one who is saved with one’s own goodness and righteousness. Therefore, happy are they who see the joy in the salvation of the cross!
