<설교>

Chapter 28

The Rebuke And The Song

It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.

For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.

Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart. (Ecclesiastes 7:5-7 KJV)

(Sermon)

Men take what is good and discard what is bad in all situations. Choosing a religion is of the same manner that believing in gods is good. Those who come to church buildings in Christianity follow the same pattern that they think believing in Jesus is beneficial.

There is no one who thinks faith is disadvantageous. People come to worship services for their comforts, peace and joy in mind. Otherwise, they wouldn’t have come. If so, do you think believing in Jesus is advantageous or fun for the life you are pursuing?

When Peter was at the high priest's palace in the capture of Jesus, a damsel said to him, “Thou also wast with Jesus of Galilee.” Then, he denied in front of all, saying he didn’t know Jesus. There was another one who recognized him, but he denied Him again. The reason was the relationship with Jesus was disadvantageous for him. At the very moment, the Lord was neither helpful nor advantageous to Peter.

Our fantasy and misconception is that believing in Jesus would be advantageous for life. While reading the Bible, we ignore the words of the Lord such as giving a sword on earth or being hated by the world in the name of Jesus. Although every word of the Lord is disadvantageous for life, we would cunningly change it to advantageous one. Consequently, one of the functions of the Bible, the rebuke, disappears. Even if preachers rebuke the congregation, it is preachers’, not that of the Bible.

In Verse 5, it says, “It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, than for a man to hear the song of fools.”

No one wants to be rebuked. If one is rebuked by a boss or a figure in authority, there is no choice, but one wouldn’t want to be rebuked in mind repulsively. Even if one is rebuked for a correction, one wouldn’t acknowledge one’s wrong doing due to one’s sinful nature. One would rather choose to hear the song because there is nothing to rebuke.

In this sense, the faith that christians in the modern Christianity have can be viewed a fake one, meaning not copied from the true one but a mere misconception. Such is used to give people comforts, benefits and happiness. There is no rebuke. Even if there is rebuke, it is nothing but of man’s idea.

Although the Preacher says it is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of the fools, we don’t know why it is so. We know not that the truth is taught through the rebuke of the wise, not the song of the fools. It is because we judge what is good and bad depending upon our emotions. Even though the rebuke is the one that reveals such foolishness, why we wouldn’t hear it is because we don’t consider the foolish, proving that we don’t have an interest in the truth.

In John 16:8, it says, “And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

The rebuke is what the Holy Spirit does to us when He comes. This rebuke is not to blame the sins we have committed but to reveal our wrong criteria. Our criteria on sin, righteousness and judgement are to divide what is justified and what is not justified by faith because our works are the center, meaning we are justified if we have works and we are not if not.

Yet, if so, we can’t see ourselves as the ones who are to blame. Even if we are rebuked, we still see ourselves with potentials to be better in faith. That’s why although the Preacher says it is better to hear the rebuke of the wise, we don’t think it’s necessary. After all, we are ignorant that we seek only for our own benefits and discard all the disadvantages. One thing for sure is that it is not faith, believing in Jesus as the Lord at all.

In 1st Corinthians 12:3, it says, “Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost.”

Do you think it is difficult to believe in Jesus and confess Him as the Lord? Most christians wouldn’t think so because they would do it at churches in the acknowledgement of others.

Yet, Paul says it is only by the Holy Spirit, implying no one else can because only when one is rebuked by the Holy Spirit and sees oneself captured in sin, realizing one’s helplessness and incompetency, can one give thanks and praise God while looking up to the Lord on the cross. Such faith can lead us to the way of the truth and the eternal life.

Thus, it is better to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of the fools. Even though there is a pleasure and laughter in the song of the fools, it can’t get us to the way of the truth. It would rather bring us into the pitfall of the worldly pleasure. In such view, the rebuke, revealing our sinful nature, is the very advantage, leading us to the truth.

In Verse 6, it says, “For as the crackling of thorns under a pot, so is the laughter of the fool: this also is vanity.”

‘As the crackling of thorns under a pot’ shows us a characteristic of a quick process from burning to ashes. It metaphorically shows us our foolishness that we are engrossed with things making us laugh for a while, neglecting the truth. We don’t know it is such foolishness that the laughter, forgetting our reality, born under the judgement of God, is led to the lamentations in the hell.

In Verse 7, it says, “Surely oppression maketh a wise man mad; and a gift destroyeth the heart.”

A bribe is a way to make one’s greed realized. It is not only our social problem but reality of the relationship with God in faith. Trying to please God for own worldly benefits belong to bribe, which is the reality of the destroyed, not having the mind that we are under the judgement of God.

Therefore, the utmost wisdom to us is to hear the rebuke. In other words, it is the blessing that we hear the cross, rebuking us, revealing who we are, leading us to the truth, the Lord. There is no truth in the song of the fools and their laughter. There is no lamentation over themselves. This is not faith but a fake one. I deeply pray that we come to experience the grace of God, leading us to the truth through the rebuke, the Word of the Lord!
