<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 29

Not Wise

Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.

Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this. (Ecclesiastes 7:8-10 KJV)

(Sermon)

The world is governed by God, the Creator, in His hand. The His government moves according to His will, not what we want, including our life. That is, He guides our life in His will. Thus, in the matter of things in the world and life, we can’t cooperate God at all.

In the Book of Romans 11:35-36, it says, “Or who hath first given to him, and it shall be recompensed unto him again? For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory for ever. Amen.”

We get nothing compensated with what we give to God. If we anticipate something to get for our work for God with our zeal and faith, such thought itself is evil, which cannot enter heaven. Nevertheless, we are engrossed with an idea that we can please God with our labor and enthusiasm, and then disappointed with despair and discouragement.

In Verse 8, it says, “Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.”

If we take a look at it literally, it doesn’t sound realistic because one begins business well, but goes bankrupt later. If the verse were true, the end would always have to be better than the beginning as a result. Yet, as mentioned, things don’t work accordingly.

In the Book of Job 8:7, Bildad says, “Though thy beginning was small, yet thy latter end should greatly increase.”

If what we do were realized as the verse says, it would be true that the end is better than the beginning. Yet, the reality of the world is totally different. Some is better at the end than the beginning, and others are better at the beginning than the end. There is no difference between believers and unbelievers. How zealous one is doesn’t make any difference either. All is done in His will. We are merely used by God.

As I have told you earlier that God is responsible for our life, it means that we are involved in God. Thus, the beginning and the end of life and all things are in God’s control, through which we receive and live.

Hence, the thing in Verse 8 doesn’t mean our thing but God’s that He fulfills in His involvement. Then, what it means is that the value of our life is revealed at the end.

In the Book of Romans 6:21-22, it says, “What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? for the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.”

If the end is shown with death and everlasting life, the better one is everlasting life for sure, and how the thing began is actually meaningless because no matter how it got started, the end is better because there is nothing better than the eternal life. Thus, standing at the everlasting life, the end of God’s involvement in our life, we can learn that the end is better than the beginning, which makes us look to the hope of the end. This is called patience.

That’s why Verse 9 says, “Be not hasty in thy spirit to be angry: for anger resteth in the bosom of fools.”

Not thinking of the end, one ends up having full of anger, not making one’s dream come true. One resents God by saying, “why me?” against “God is working in His will.” Yet, it is the work of God that He makes us see such nature as ours, looking up to the Lord, shedding His blood on the cross, by which we produce fruit in holiness.

Believers don’t believe in God for fulfilling their own wills. Such thoughts are the idol-worshipping, man-made, far from the work of God through Christ for the eternal life. Faith makes us believe in the fulfillment of the work of God, committing ourselves to God till the end. We ought to put our value of life at the end as well. Thus, we can learn that the fool are to look at the present, not thinking of the end, revealing themselves nothing but anger.

In Verse 10, it says the same, “Say not thou, What is the cause that the former days were better than these? for thou dost not enquire wisely concerning this.”

We naturally come to think of old days when we are not satisfied with the current situation, comparing the present with the past. Israelites were not different from it that they wished they had been in Egypt when they were in the wilderness, eating Manna only. They were forgetful that they would enter the promised land. Likewise, it is not wise that we don’t think of the end, the work of God, guiding His people.

Today is passing through. Even if today is the best day, it doesn’t last best until the end because we would pursue what is better tomorrow than today. Therefore, believers should view the given day as an opportunity of witnessing the work of God. It is to be the day that we are held in God’s hand, not living for our own will.

Whether the present or the past, we are all human beings. We have never been beings out of sinners. We are new creatures in Christ, belonging to the everlasting life even though we are dead beings in sinful nature, deserving the judgement. That’s why wishing today were better than the past is not wise but fool!
