12.지혜의 그늘 아래에 있음은 돈의 그늘 아래에 있음과 같으나, 지혜에 관한 지식이 더 유익함은 지혜가 그 지혜 있는 자를 살리기 때문이니라
13.하나님께서 행하시는 일을 보라 하나님께서 굽게 하신 것을 누가 능히 곧게 하겠느냐
14.형통한 날에는 기뻐하고 곤고한 날에는 되돌아 보아라 이 두 가지를 하나님이 병행하게 하사 사람이 그의 장래 일을 능히 헤아려 알지 못하게 하셨느니라

우리가 하나님을 믿으면 영원한 생명을 얻고 복을 누리게 된다고 말한다면 그것은 맞습니다. 하나님은 생명과 복이 되시기 때문에 하나님이 부르신 신자가 하나님께 있는 모든 것을 누리게 되는 것은 성경의 약속입니다. 하지만 오해하지 않아야 하는 것은 하늘에 속한 생명이고 복이라는 것입니다. 따라서 땅의 것은 하나님의 약속에 포함되어 있지 않는 것이기에 땅의 것을 복과 화로 나눌 수 없습니다. 다시 말해서 하나님이 우리에게 복을 주시지만 그 복에 우리가 원하고 기대하는 땅의 것은 포함되어 있지 않다는 것입니다.
그런데 이러한 말들이 머리로는 인정이 되지만 실제로는 세상의 것을 좋고 나쁜 것으로 구분하면서 좋은 것을 얻고자 하는 마음을 벗어버리지 못합니다. 이것이 인간의 한계입니다. 인간의 한계라고 말씀드리는 것은 ‘땅의 것은 복이 아니다’라는 생각으로 땅의 것을 구하지 않고 원하지 않는 마음 상태로 만들려고 하지 말라는 뜻입니다. 땅의 것을 복으로 구하지 않는 것이 하늘의 것만 소망하는 믿음이라 여기고 그런 믿음이 되려고 땅의 것을 바라는 욕심을 버리고자 한다면 오히려 그것이 믿음을 벗어나 마귀의 시험에 드는 결과일 뿐입니다.
기독교인들이 이점을 항상 오해합니다. 소위 믿음 좋은 사람 되는 것이 하나님이 기뻐하시는 뜻으로 아는 것입니다. 인간이 믿음 좋은 사람 되는 길도, 방법도 없지만 설령 우리가 생각하는 믿음 좋은 사람 된다고 해서 달라질 것이 무엇일까요? 이미 하나님과의 관계에서 하늘의 생명에 속한 자로 부름 받았고. 그리스도 안에서 복의 전부를 누리는 상태에 있습니다. 이것은 우리의 믿음이 어떠한가와 관계없이 하나님의 약속으로 오신 그리스도로 이루어진 사건입니다. 우리의 믿음이 엉터리라 해도 그리스도께 붙들린 신자로 존재하는 것입니다. 그래서 믿음 좋은 사람이 따로 존재하는 것이 아니고, ‘믿음이 좋다 나쁘다’로 구분되는 것도 아닙니다.
인간은 항상 땅의 것에 마음을 두고 살게 되어 있습니다. 이 마음을 누가 말리지 못합니다. 그런데 땅에 것에 마음 두고 사는 것이 곧 죄가 생산되는 길로 가는 것입니다. 바꾸어 말하면 항상 땅에 것으로 마음이 끌리는 인간은 죄를 생산하며 산다는 것입니다.
그래서 신자가 주님과 바른 관계에 있는 것은 선하고 착한 일을 하는 행위가 아니라 죄의 자리에서 우리에게 다가오시고 피의 은혜로 모든 죄를 용서하시고 거룩한 자 되게 하셔서 생명으로 인도하시는 주로 인해 감사하는 것을 의미합니다. 하나님이 행하시는 일 또한 우리의 죄가 드러나고 죄를 보게 하는 것과 무관하지 않습니다.
13,14절을 보면 “하나님께서 행하시는 일을 보라 하나님께서 굽게 하신 것을 누가 능히 곧게 하겠느냐 형통한 날에는 기뻐하고 곤고한 날에는 되돌아 보아라 이 두 가지를 하나님이 병행하게 하사 사람이 그의 장래 일을 능히 헤아려 알지 못하게 하셨느니라”고 말씀합니다.
하나님이 우리 인생을 형통한 날과 곤고한 날 두 가지를 병행하여 두시고 행하십니다. 신앙 생활을 잘하면 형통한 날을 주시고 못하면 곤고한 날을 주시는 것일까요? 이것이 세상에 마음을 둔 인간의 계산속입니다. 사람들은 형통을 행복과 연결하여 생각합니다. 형통을 모든 일이 원하는 대로 잘되는 것으로 이해하기 때문에 형통하면 성공하고 행복하게 잘 살 수 있다고 판단하는 것입니다. 그리고 곤고의 날은 반대로 불행과 연결 짓습니다. 힘들고 괴로운 날이 행복할 리가 없다는 것입니다.
하나님은 인생에 형통한 날이 있게도 하고 곤고한 날이 있게도 합니다. 우리가 어떤 날을 원하든 무시하시고 하나님의 뜻대로 일방적으로 주시는 날입니다. 하나님이 굽게 하신 것을 곧게 할 사람이 없는 것처럼 우리가 어떤 방법을 동원해도 하나님의 뜻을 바꿀 수 없습니다. 그렇기 때문에 곤고한 날이 있을 때 자신의 믿음 상태를 살피며 고칠 것을 고치면 곤고의 날 대신에 형통의 날을 주실 것으로 기대한다면 그것은 믿음이 아닌 사탄의 생각으로 존재하는 것일 뿐입니다.
전도자는 형통한 날에는 기뻐하고 곤고한 날에는 되돌아보라고 합니다. 인간이라면 누구나 형통의 날에는 기뻐합니다. 굳이 기뻐하라는 말을 하지 않아도 누구나 기뻐하며 좋아하는 것입니다. 그렇다면 차라리‘형통의 날에 하나님의 은혜를 생각하고 감사하라’는 것이 더 신앙에 가까운 말이 아닐까요?
여기서 또 하나 생각할 것이 있습니다. 형통아 날이 주어지고 기뻐하며 하나님이 주신 은혜에 감사하게 된다고 합니다. 형통이 계속 되면 마음이 어떻게 변할까요? 처음의 감사가 있는 마음이 그대로 유지되는 것일까요? 그렇지 않습니다. 형통이 계속되면 하루하루의 형통을 당연한 것으로 받아들이고 따라서 감사의 마음은 희미해지고 사라집니다. 자신이 누구로 인해 사는가? 를 잊는 것입니다.
그래서 곤고한 날에 되돌아보라고 하는 것은 형통의 날을 살았던 것이 자신이 누릴 당연한 것이 아니었음을 깨닫게 하기 위함입니다. 형통한 날에 기뻐한 것이 잘못이 아니라 형통한 날도 곤고한 날도 죄인을 인도하시는 주님과의 관계에서 주가 행하시는 일이라는 것을 마음에 두지 않는 것이 잘못입니다.
곤고한 날에 되돌아 볼 것은 형통의 날입니다. 자신의 힘으로 살게 된 형통이 아니라 주님의 은혜로 인한 것이었음을 알게 된다면 현재의 곤고의 날 역시 주께서 인도하시는 은혜의 날임을 알게 됩니다. 이것이 그리스도께 속한 자유자로 존재하는 신자입니다. 형통과 곤에 매이지 않고 모든 날에서 주의 인도하심을 보게 되는 것이 주님과의 관계에 있는 참된 형통인 것입니다. 이것을 배우게 하기 위해 우리의 인생에 형통의 날과 곤고의 날을 병행하시는 것입니다. 이것이 인생의 이치입니다.
누구에게든 형통의 날과 곤고의 날이 있습니다. 하나님께서 이 두 가지를 병행하시며 주를 바라보게 하시기 때문입니다. 그래서 형통은 복이고 곤고는 화, 또는 징벌이라는 생각은 하나님의 함께 하심과 인도하심을 시시하게 보는 것과 같습니다.
11,12절을 보면 “지혜는 유산 같이 아름답고 햇빛을 보는 자에게 유익이 되도다 지혜의 그늘 아래에 있음은 돈의 그늘 아래에 있음과 같으나, 지혜에 관한 지식이 더 유익함은 지혜가 그 지혜 있는 자를 살리기 때문이니라”고 말합니다.
지혜는 우리에게 생명이 되는 것을 말합니다. 지혜가 있다는 것은 곧 지혜로 인해서 생명을 얻었다는 것을 의미하는데 우리는 애당초 지혜를 얻을 자격이 없는 자들이었습니다. 생명에 속할 수 없는 불의한 존재들이기 때문입니다. 그런데 하나님께서 우리를 부르시고 아들의 피로 거룩하게 하셔서 하나님의 생명을 물려받을 자식으로 삼으신 것입니다. 그래서 지혜는 유산 같이 아름답다고 하는 것입니다.
지혜의 그늘 아래 있는 것을 돈의 그늘 아래 있음과 같다고 하는데, 돈의 그늘 아래 있다는 것은 돈이라는 힘 아래에서 든든함을 누리는 것으로 이해할 수 있습니다. 그처럼 지혜가 신자에게는 힘이 되고 든든함이 된다는 뜻입니다. 그러나 돈은 돈 있는 자를 살리지 못합니다. 흘러가는 세월을 막을 수 없고 죄로 인한 죽음에서 건질 수가 없습니다. 하지만 지혜는 지혜 있는 자를 살립니다. 영원한 사망에서 살리고 생명의 나라에 있게 합니다.
그러므로 인생에서 가장 복된 것은 지혜가 있는 것입니다. 또한 하나님께서 우리를 아들 되게 하셔서 지혜를 주신 모든 것이 아름다운 하나님의 일이며 은혜입니다. 십자가의 가치도 모르고 세상만 인생의 전부로 알고 살아야 할 우리가 그리스도의 십자가에 대한 말에 귀가 기울여지는 것이 하나님의 아름다운 은총 덕분인 것입니다. 때문에 우리 인생에서 아름답다고 할 수 있는 것은 우리가 십자가에 죽으신 주를 믿음의 대상으로 바라보게 된 것입니다.
이처럼 인생이 이미 하나님의 아름다움 일에 속해 있다면 그것만으로 인생은 형통한 것이고 아름다운 것입니다. 이같은 사실을 잊고 살다가 곤고한 날로 인해 되돌아보게 된다면 곤고한 날은 우리가 바라는 형통의 날보다 훨씬 더 유익한 것이라고 할 수 있습니다. 이처럼 신자는 하루하루가 어떤 날인가를 떠나서 하나님이 베푸시는 유익에 있는 것입니다.
하나님이 형통의 날과 곤고한 날 두 가지를 병행하시는 것은, 하나님이 주신 현재의 삶에서 주께서 행하신 일로 감사하는 자로 세우기 위함입니다. 세상에서의 형통으로 기뻐하는 것이 아니라 곤고한 날을 포함하여 모든 날에서 주가 동행하시고 주의 행하심으로 살아가는 것으로 감사하게 합니다. 이것이 세상을 살아가지만 세상에 속하지 않고 지혜 있는 자로 사는 것입니다.

The Way Of Life
Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun.
For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.
Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked?
In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him. (Ecclesiastes 7:11-14 KJV)

It is true to say that we receive the eternal life and blessings if we believe in God. Since God Himself is the life and blessing, it is the promise of the Bible that believers, whom God calls, enjoy all things that belong to God. Yet, what we mustn’t misunderstand is that the life and blessing belong to heaven. Thus, things that belong to the world can’t be divided into blessings and woes. In other words, although God gives us blessing, there is nothing we want on earth.
Yet, even though we have it in our head-knowledge, we can’t get rid of the mind that we would get what looks good to us while discerning what is good and what is bad in the world. This is our limit. Why I’m saying that is to tell you not to think that earthly things are not God’s blessings and try not to ask for them. If one thinks not asking things on earth is faith hoping for only heavenly things, trying to abandon the greed, which is not of faith but in satanic temptation.
Christians always misunderstand this. We believe God is pleased with the fact that one becomes a better person in faith. Not only is there no way that one becomes a better person in faith, but what would be different if one were a better person in faith? Believers are the ones in the eternal life by God’s calling, enjoying all the blessings of God in Christ. It is the event done by Christ, sent by God as the Covenant, having nothing to do with our faith. Even if our faith is nothing, we are still held by Christ. Therefore, there is neither better faith nor discerning ‘good or bad faith.’
We, no exception, live wanting things on earth. There is nothing that blocks it. However, such life is the way, revealing sin. In other words, we never stop sinning.
Thus, the right relationship of believers with the Lord is not doing good deeds but giving thanks for the Lord, who came to us to forgive our all sins with the grace of His blood, making us holy and leading us in the life. All that God does is also related to revealing our sins for us to see.
In Verse 13 and 14, it says, “Consider the work of God: for who can make that straight, which he hath made crooked? In the day of prosperity be joyful, but in the day of adversity consider: God also hath set the one over against the other, to the end that man should find nothing after him.”
God leads our life in two ways: prosperity and adversity. Do you think God gives us the day of prosperity if we are good in the life of faith and that of adversity if not? Such thoughts are of our sinful nature, seeking for things on earth. People think of success in the relationship with happiness, understanding success is having all things done well, producing happiness. On the contrary, the day of adversity is unhappiness, having hard time and difficulties.
God gives us the day of prosperity and the day of adversity. They are given by God according to His will, regardless of what we want. As no one can make the day of adversity that of prosperity, there is nothing that can change the will of God. Thus, if one expects God to change the adversity day to the straight day, thinking if one makes the life of faith better, it is nothing of faith but satanic.
The Preacher says to rejoice in the day of prosperity and consider the day of adversity. All men are naturally happy in the day of prosperity. Then, wouldn’t it rather be better to say to give thanks to God for His grace in the day of prosperity?
There is one more to think about. Let’s say we come to be thankful for what God has done for us in the day of prosperity. What kind of mind would we have on such day? Could our thankful heart last? No. If the prosperity continued, we would take it for granted and the heart would be fading away, forgetting by whom we live.
Thus, the Preacher says to consider in the day of adversity to let us know the day of prosperity shouldn’t have been taken for granted. It is not wrong that we don’t rejoice in the prosperity but that we forget all days of either prosperity of adversity are of God, leading us in the relationship with the Lord.
What we consider in the day of adversity is the day of prosperity. If we come to know the day of prosperity is of the grace of God, not of our own, we also come to know the day of adversity is of the same way. This is the believer, living in Christ, as a free being. Whether we are in the day of prosperity or that of adversity, if we look up to the guidance of the Lord, it is the true prosperity in the relationship with the Lord. In oder to teach us such truth, God allows us to be in the day of prosperity and the day of adversity. This is the way of life.
We all have those two days in life, leading us to the Lord. That’s why viewing prosperity as blessing and adversity as woe despises His leading and being with us.
In Verses 11 and 12, it says, “Wisdom is good with an inheritance: and by it there is profit to them that see the sun. For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.”
Wisdom means the life to us. To have wisdom means to have the life, but we don’t deserve the life from the beginning because we are unrighteous. Yet, God called such people like us and made us holy by the blood of the Son, leaving us as the heir with an inheritance. That’s why it says it is good.
It says for wisdom is a defense and money is a defense, understood that we are under the power of money. Likewise, wisdom is the power for believers. Yet, money can’t make the dead owner of money bring back to life. There is nothing to hinder from death. Yet, wisdom is different, bringing us from the eternal condemnation to the kingdom of the eternal life.
Therefore, what is the most precious in life is to have wisdom. Furthermore, it is the work and grace of God that God has made us the sons of God and give us the wisdom. Thanks to the love of the grace, we come to appreciate the cross of Christ although we deserve nothing of heaven but filthy things of the world. Thus, what is good in our life is that we come to look up to the Lord, the Subject of our faith.
Likewise, if our life is already in the good work of God, it itself is in the day of prosperity and beautiful. When we forget this and come to consider it in the day of adversity, we can say that the day of adversity is more useful than the day of prosperity. Thus, all the days are good for believers throughout the life, regardless of what kind of day it is.
God allows such days in life to set us to be thankful for what is given to us today, making us rejoice in the day of adversity as well as the day of prosperity with His presence with us, not in the day of prosperity in terms of the worldly things. This is how we live in His wisdom, not belonging to the world!
