1.이 모든 것을 내가 마음에 두고 이 모든 것을 살펴 본즉 의인들이나 지혜자들이나 그들의 행위나 모두 다 하나님의 손 안에 있으니 사랑을 받을는지 미움을 받을는지 사람이 알지 못하는 것은 모두 그들의 미래의 일들임이니라
2.모든 사람에게 임하는 그 모든 것이 일반이라 의인과 악인, 선한 자와 깨끗한 자와 깨끗하지 아니한 자, 제사를 드리는 자와 제사를 드리지 아니하는 자에게 일어나는 일들이 모두 일반이니 선인과 죄인, 맹세하는 자와 맹세하기를 무서워하는 자가 일반이로다
3.모든 사람의 결국은 일반이라 이것은 해 아래에서 행해지는 모든 일 중의 악한 것이니 곧 인생의 마음에는 악이 가득하여 그들의 평생에 미친 마음을 품고 있다가 후에는 죽은 자들에게로 돌아가는 것이라
4.모든 산 자들 중에 들어 있는 자에게는 누구나 소망이 있음은 산 개가 죽은 사자보다 낫기 때문이니라
5.산 자들은 죽을 줄을 알되 죽은 자들은 아무것도 모르며 그들이 다시는 상을 받지 못하는 것은 그들의 이름이 잊어버린 바 됨이니라
6.그들의 사랑과 미움과 시기도 없어진 지 오래이니 해 아래에서 행하는 모든 일 중에서 그들에게 돌아갈 몫은 영원히 없느니라
<설교>
우리는 복과 저주를 세상에서 일어나는 일로 판단합니다. 기쁘고 좋은 일은 복이라고 하고 슬프고 힘든 일은 저주라고 합니다. 그리고 이러한 복과 저주는 인간의 행동에 따른 결과로 주어진다고 생각하는 것이 일반적입니다. 만약 이것이 맞는다면 누가 복을 받고 저주를 받을 것인가에 대한 예상은 얼마든지 가능합니다. 누구든 선한 행동을 하는 사람은 복을 받아 잘 살 것이고, 악한 행동을 하면 저주와 벌을 받아 고통스럽게 살 것으로 예상하면 되기 때문입니다.
하지만 누구의 미래도 이러한 예상대로 흘러가지 않습니다. 이것은 누구라도 인정할 수밖에 없는 분명한 현실입니다. 우리가 지금까지 살아온 삶이나 주변의 사람들이 살아가는 것을 보면 인생이 우리가 말하는 선한 행동과 악한 행동을 따라 복과 저주로 분명히 구분되어 주어지지 않는 것입니다.
이러한 현실을 전도자는 “모든 사람에게 임하는 그 모든 것이 일반이라 의인과 악인, 선한 자와 깨끗한 자와 깨끗하지 아니한 자, 제사를 드리는 자와 제사를 드리지 아니하는 자에게 일어나는 일들이 모두 일반이니 선인과 죄인, 맹세하는 자와 맹세하기를 무서워하는 자가 일반이로다”(2절)라고 말합니다.
일반이라는 말은‘같다’는 뜻입니다. 모든 사람에게 일어나는 일이 의인과 악인, 깨끗한 자와 깨끗하지 아니한 자, 심지어 제사를 드리는 자와 드리지 않는 자를 구분하지 않고 같다고 합니다. 지금의 기독교 입장에서 이해한다면 주일을 지키는 자와 지키지 않는 자, 십일조를 하는 자와 하지 않는 자, 예배를 드리는 자와 드리지 않는 행위의 차별 없이 일어나는 일이 같다는 것입니다. 어떻게 행동했는가에 따라 미래의 삶이 결정되고 달라지는 것이 아닌 것입니다. 이것이 성경이고 실제 우리가 세상에서 경험하는 현실입니다.
우리는 이러한 현실을 쉽게 이해하지 못합니다. 그래서‘하나님은 왜 이렇게 일하시는가?’라며 의문과 함께 원망하기도 합니다. 이것이 하나님이 어떤 분이시며 인간이 어떤 존재인가를 알지 못한 우리의 현실에 대한 반응입니다. 그래서 자신의 기대와 예상대로 실현되지 않는 현실을 거부하는 것입니다.
그런데도 불구하고 현대 교회는‘믿음 생활 잘하고 선한 일을 하면 하나님이 복을 내려주신다는’는 말을 멈추지 않습니다. 성경과 다르고 현실과도 맞지 않는 말을 마치 하나님의 말씀인 것처럼 가르칩니다.
전 8장에 보면 악인들의 행위에 따라 벌을 받는 의인들이 있고 의인들의 행위에 따라 상을 받는 악인들도 있다고 합니다(전 8:14). 사실 이것이 우리가 현실에서 만나고 경험하는 일들입니다. 악인의 행위가 악인이 아닌 의인에게로 돌아가는 일도 있다면 우리는 미래를 도무지 예상할 수 없습니다. 그렇기 때문에 복을 받기 위해 선을 행하고 경건의 삶을 살고자 하는 모든 노력들이 헛된 일이 되는 것입니다.
전도자는 1절에서도 “이 모든 것을 내가 마음에 두고 이 모든 것을 살펴 본즉 의인들이나 지혜자들이나 그들의 행위나 모두 다 하나님의 손 안에 있으니 사랑을 받을는지 미움을 받을는지 사람이 알지 못하는 것은 모두 그들의 미래의 일들임이니라”고 말합니다.
우리는 의인들과 지혜자의 행위라면 분명 하나님이 기뻐하시고 사랑하실 것이라고 지레 짐작합니다. 하지만 그들의 행위로도 사랑을 받을지 미움을 받을지 사람이 알지 못한다고 합니다. 의인이든 지혜자든 사람의 행위가 하나님의 사랑을 받을 조건도 의로움도 되지 않기 때문입니다. 그만큼 인간의 행위는 하나님께 무가치한 것입니다.
전도자는 모든 사람의 결국이 일반이라고 합니다(3절). 행위와 무관하게 모두가 죽은 자들에게로 돌아갑니다. 왜 그토록 인간의 행위가 묵살되는 것일까요? 그것은 모든 인생의 마음에 악이 가득하고 평생에 미친 마음을 품고 살아가기 때문입니다. 그래서 모든 사람의 운명은 동일합니다. 행위를 선과 악으로 나누고 행위에 따라 의인과 악인으로 규정하며‘저 사람은 복 받고 천국 갈 사람이다’라고 우리끼리 인정하고 높인다 해도 사람의 결국은 죽음의 길로 간다는 변하지 않는 이치에 생각이 머물러야 하는 것입니다.
하지만 인간은‘하나님을 믿으면 하나님의 백성이 되고 심판과 저주에서 벗어나 복을 누리게 된다’는 착각에서 도무지 벗어나지 못합니다. 그래서 인생에 대해서도 제멋대로 예측하고 판단합니다. 이러한 인간의 착각을 하나님이 아시고 행하신 것이 출애굽입니다.
하나님은 출애굽 과정을 통해서 이스라엘로 하여금 자신들도 애굽과 동일하게 하나님의 원수로 취급되어 심판을 받고 죽음의 길로 가야 한다는 것을 알게 하십니다. 이것이 심판을 받아야 할 이스라엘을 살게 하시고 약속의 땅까지 끌어가신 이유입니다. 사람의 결국이 행위에 따라 차별되는 것이 아니라 긍휼히 여김 받을 수 없는 자를 긍휼히 여기신 하나님의 자비의 결과임을 알게 하시는 것입니다.
그래서 전도자가“모든 산 자들 중에 들어 있는 자에게는 누구나 소망이 있음은 산 개가 죽은 사자보다 낫기 때문이니라”(4절)는 말을 합니다.
지금 살아있다고 해서 죽지 않는 것이 아닙니다. 그렇게 보면 산 개가 죽은 사자보다 나을 것은 없습니다. 하지만 하나님이 살게 하시면서 인간의 노력과 상관없이 모든 자가 죽음으로 돌아가는 이치를 통해 인생의 헛됨을 보게 하시고 희망이 오직 그리스도께만 있음을 알게 하신다면 지금 살아있는 것이 낫다고 할 수 있습니다. 비록 하나님이 고통과 아픔으로 이끄신다 해도 그 때문에 자신의 행함이 아닌 예수님의 의로우신 행함에 소망을 두게 된다면 죽은 사자보다 산 개가 나은 것입니다.
죽은 자는 인간에 대해 알게 되고 인생의 헛됨을 깨달을 기회가 없습니다. 그래서 지금 하나님이 여러분을 살게 하신 것을 인생의 헛됨에서 헛되지 않은 것이 무엇인가를 알게 하시는 은혜의 시간으로 여겨야 합니다. 여러분이 살고자 하는 미래를 위해 선한 행실을 동원하여 복을 받고자 하는 헛된 수고가 아니라 하나님이 주신 대로 수고하면서 헛된 세상에 헛되지 않은 의로 오신 주님으로 감사할 수 있어야 하는 것입니다. 이것이 인생을 사는 이유가 되어야 합니다.
인생에서 가장 복된 것은 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 알게 되는 것입니다. 그렇다면 저주는 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 모른 채로 죽는 것입니다. 하나님은 택한 백성으로 하여금 은혜와 사랑을 깨닫고 고백하도록 일하십니다. 그래서 신자는 지금 살게 하시는 것만으로도 감사할 수 있습니다. ‘무엇을 누리고 사는가?’와 무관하게 살아있기에 하나님의 사랑을 알 수 있는 것으로 감사하는 것입니다.
Chapter 37
One Event Unto All
For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.
All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.
This is an evil among all things that are done under the sun, that there is one event unto all: yea, also the heart of the sons of men is full of evil, and madness is in their heart while they live, and after that they go to the dead.
For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.
For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not any thing, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.
Also their love, and their hatred, and their envy, is now perished; neither have they any more a portion for ever in any thing that is done under the sun. (Ecclesiastes 9:1-6 KJV)
(Sermon)
We see blessing and curse through the things happening in the world. We call good and happy things blessing and sad and hard things curse. Furthermore, we think all these are the results of our behaviors. If it were true, it is obvious that we could guess who receives blessing and who receives curse because all are to show up according to what we do.
Yet, nothing in the world goes as expected, which no one can deny. Looking around us in the reality, there is no clear line between the righteous and the wicked for blessing and curse accordingly.
The Preacher tells us of such reality in Verse 2, “All things come alike to all: there is one event to the righteous, and to the wicked; to the good and to the clean, and to the unclean; to him that sacrificeth, and to him that sacrificeth not: as is the good, so is the sinner; and he that sweareth, as he that feareth an oath.”
‘Alike’ means the same. It says all thing that occur to all are the same among the righteous and the wicked, the clean and the unclean, and even those who sacrifice and those who sacrifice not. In the modern Christianity’s terms, all things are the same among those who keep the Lord’s day and those who don’t and those who keep the tenth and those who don’t and those who worship and those who don’t. Our future is not determined by what we have done. This is what the Bible teaches and our reality.
We wouldn’t accept such reality easily, ending up complaining and resenting God by saying, ‘why is God working this way?’ This is our response of the reality, ignorant of who God is and who we are. Thus, we would deny our reality, moving against our expectation.
Nevertheless, preachers in the modern Christianity wouldn’t give up on saying, ‘if you devote yourselves to God, God will bless you.’ They teach what is against the Word of God as if it were the will of God.
In Chapter 8:14, it says, “There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.” This is rather our reality, unexpected. Hence, all things we do for blessing are in vain.
The Preacher says again in Verse 1, “For all this I considered in my heart even to declare all this, that the righteous, and the wise, and their works, are in the hand of God: no man knoweth either love or hatred by all that is before them.”
We have no doubt that God would be pleased with works of the righteous and the wise. Yet, it says no one knows who receives what. It is because no one deserves to receive God’s favor. All works of men are valueless to God.
The Preacher says one event unto all is the same in Verse 3. All go to the dead regardless of works. Why is it so? It is because all live in the heart of full of evil. Thus, the destiny of all men are the same. Even if we say, ‘such will go to heaven due to all things done, we mustn’t forget all go to death.
However, it is incorrigible for us to think, ‘if I believe in God, I am out of curse and judgement and enjoy God’s blessing’, resulting that we evaluate who we are on our own. That’s why God has given us the Book of Exodus, shattering our such thoughts.
We ought not to look over the fact that God treated Israelites and Egyptians equally in terms of the judgement, revealing to us why God saved and brought them into the Promised Land. It teaches us that our future is not determined by what we do but the compassion of God for those who don’t deserve it.
That’s why the Preacher says in Verse 4, “For to him that is joined to all the living there is hope: for a living dog is better than a dead lion.”
Even if we are alive now, it doesn’t mean we are not dead. In this sense, a living dog is no different from a dead lion. Yet, it is true that if one realizes all of one’s hope is on Christ, seeing the vanity of all men through all going to death, we can say ‘alive’ is better than ‘dead.’ Even if God leads one to pain and difficulties, if one finds oneself in the righteous work of Christ, a living dog is better than a dead lion.
The dead have no chance to learn the vanity of life. Thus, you should recognize the given time is for us to know what is not vain in such vain world, the grace of God while alive. We ought to proceed to the place where we are thankful for Christ, who came as the Righteousness to such vain world while laboring with what is given to us by God, discarding our false hope to be blessed by God with our vain works. This should be the reason why we are alive.
The utmost blessing in life is to know the love and grace of God. Then, curse is to know without knowing it. God is working for His people, realizing and confessing the love and grace of God. Therefore, believers can be thankful even only for being alive today. Believers can give thanks to God for the chance to know the love of God no matter what we have or do!
