13.내가 또 해 아래에서 지혜를 보고 내가 크게 여긴 것이 이러하니
14.곧 작고 인구가 많지 아니한 어떤 성읍에 큰 왕이 와서 그것을 에워싸고 큰 흉벽을 쌓고 치고자 할 때에
15.그 성읍 가운데에 가난한 지혜자가 있어서 그의 지혜로 그 성읍을 건진 그것이라 그러나 그 가난한 자를 기억하는 사람이 없었도다
16.그러므로 내가 이르기를 지혜가 힘보다 나으나 가난한 자의 지혜가 멸시를 받고 그의 말들을 사람들이 듣지 아니한다 하였노라
17.조용히 들리는 지혜자들의 말들이 우매한 자들을 다스리는 자의 호령보다 나으니라
18.지혜가 무기보다 나으니라 그러나 죄인 한 사람이 많은 선을 무너지게 하느니라

하나님을 경외하며 악에서 떠난 자라는 칭송을 들을 정도로 하나님을 신앙했던 욥을 당황하게 한 것은 재앙의 날이 임한 현실이었습니다. 이것은 욥에게만 해당되는 이야기가 아닙니다. 우리 역시 욥과 동일한 현실을 살고 있기 때문입니다. ‘하나님을 믿으면 재앙의 날이 임하지 않는다’가 아니라 ‘모든 사람에게 임하는 그 모든 것이 일반이라’는 방식의 현실 속에 있는 것입니다.
그래서 우리는 때때로 욥처럼 신앙에 대해 당황과 혼란을 경험하게 됩니다. 하나님을 믿으면 현재의 삶에 도움을 받을 수 있을 것으로 기대했는데 원하지 않은 전혀 다른 현실이 주어지기 때문입니다. 결국 우리의 문제는 하나님을 주권과 섭리를 말하면서도 악인들의 행위를 따라 벌을 받는 의인이 있게 하시고, 의인들의 행위에 따라 상을 받는 악인이 있게 하시는 하나님의 방식을 그대로 받아들이지 않는 것에 있다고 할 것입니다.
본문에 보면 큰 왕이 작고 인구가 많지 않은 성읍을 에워싸고 큰 흉벽을 쌓고 치려고 합니다. 작은 성읍은 큰 왕의 공격을 벗어날 힘이 없습니다. 그런데 성읍에 가난한 지혜자가 있었는데 그의 지혜로 작은 성이 큰 왕으로부터 건짐을 받았다고 합니다. 성을 구원했다면 대대로 영웅 대접 받기에 충분합니다. 그런데 그 가난한 자를 기억하는 사람이 없었다고 합니다. 큰 왕으로부터 성을 구원하는 공로를 세웠음에도 불구하고 정작 구원 받은 사람들의 기억에서 지워진 것입니다. 이런 현상이 유발된 이유가 무엇일까요?
16절에 보면 “그러므로 내가 이르기를 지혜가 힘보다 나으나 가난한 자의 지혜가 멸시를 받고 그의 말들을 사람들이 듣지 아니한다 하였노라”고 말합니다.
지혜가 힘보다 낫다는 것은 가난한 자의 지혜가 큰 왕으로부터 성을 건진 것으로 확인되었습니다. 하지만 지혜는 존귀한 것으로 대접받지 못하고 멸시를 받아 지혜자의 말을 사람들이 듣지 않고 기억하지도 않은 것입니다. 지혜자가 힘없는 가난한 자라는 것이 이유일 것입니다. 힘없는 성이 지혜로 인해 건짐 받음을 경험했으면서도 지혜보다 힘을 더 낫게 여긴 것입니다.
전 7:19절에 보면 “지혜가 지혜자를 성읍 가운데에 있는 열 명의 권력자들보다 더 능력이 있게 하느니라”고 말합니다.
이것이 사실이면 세상은 지혜를 구하는 것이 맞습니다. 하지만 세상은 지혜에는 관심이 없습니다. 지혜가 열 명의 권력자보다 더 능력이 있게 한다는 것도 인정하지 않습니다. 현실에서 경험하는 것은 지혜가 능력이 아니라 단 한명이라 할지라도 권력자의 능력이 도움 되는 것이기 때문입니다.
작은 성이 지혜자의 지혜로 구원 받았지만 그것은 큰 왕에게 위협 받는 현실에서의 구원일 뿐입니다. 큰 왕이 물러간 다음에는 또 다른 현실 문제에 부딪히게 됩니다. 그런데 지혜자의 지혜가 큰 왕에게서 건지는 능력은 되었다 해도 모든 현실에서 도움이 되고 건짐이 되는 능력으로 나타나는 것은 아닙니다. 때문에 항상 오늘의 현실만을 바라보고 살아가는 사람들에게 가난한 지혜자의 지혜는 오늘의 삶에는 도움이 되지 않는 과거의 일로 잊혀지는 것입니다. 이것이 지혜가 멸시 받는 이유입니다.
작은 성은 가난한 자의 지혜가 아니었다면 오늘이라는 날을 살 수 없었습니다. 오늘이라는 현재가 어떤 현실로 주어지든, 그것이 평안이든 고통이든 지혜자의 지혜로 인해 큰 왕으로부터 건짐 받았기에 살게 되는 현실입니다. 큰 왕에게 삼킨바 되었다면 없었을 현실이라는 것입니다. 이것을 알았다면 가난한 지혜자는 성읍 사람들에게 기억되고 그 지혜는 열 명의 권력자보다 더 능력이 되는 것으로 대접받았을 것입니다.
가난한 지혜자의 지혜로 구원 받은 작은 성에 가난한 자를 기억하는 사람이 없게 된 현상이 오늘의 현실에 도움 되는 것만 쫓는 인간성 때문임을 생각해 보십시오. 우리가 어떻게 하나님의 은혜를 멸시하고 살아가는지를 보게 될 것입니다. 하나님의 지혜로 구원 받았고 오늘이라는 현재도 구원 안에서 살게 하시는 은혜로 말미암은 것임을 잊어버리고 현재의 삶에 도움 되는 것만 좇으면서 지혜를 멸시하는 것입니다.
고전 1:24,25절에 보면 “오직 부르심을 받은 자들에게는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 그리스도는 하나님의 능력이요 하나님의 지혜니라 하나님의 어리석음이 사람보다 지혜롭고 하나님의 약하심이 사람보다 강하니라”고 말합니다.
하나님이 세상에 보내신 가난한 지혜자는 그리스도입니다. 우리가 보기에 흠모할만한 아름다운 것이 없는 지혜자라는 이유로 멸시를 받아 사람들에게 버림을 받았습니다. 현실의 문제에 도움이 되지 않는다는 것 때문입니다. 하지만 그는 우리의 질고를 지고 우리가 당할 징벌을 대신 받았습니다. 우리의 허물 때문에 찔림을 받았고 우리의 죄악 때문에 상함을 입었습니다. 그리고 우리는 그가 징계를 받고 채찍에 맞음으로 평화를 누리고 나음을 받았습니다. 이것이 메시아에 대한 이사야 선지자의 예언이었고 그의 예언대로 예수님은 십자가에서 모든 고초를 당하셨습니다.
그런데 사람들은 이 모든 것을 지나간 과거의 일로 치부합니다. 예수를 믿고 죄 용서를 받았으니 더 이상 죄를 언급할 이유가 없다는 것입니다. 그래서 십자가에 피 흘려 죽으신 예수는 기억하지 않고 돈 문제, 자식 문제와 같은 현실에 도움을 주는 다른 예수를 열망합니다. 그것이 예수 그리스도를 우리를 대신하여 십자가에 못 박히게 하신 하나님의 사랑과 자비하심을 멸시하는 것임을 모른 채 말입니다.
인간의 어리석음은 자신이 처한 참된 현실을 보지 못하는 것입니다. 속에 죄를 품고 살아가면서도 “그러므로 한 사람으로 말미암아 죄가 세상에 들어오고 죄로 말미암아 사망이 들어왔나니 이와 같이 모든 사람이 죄를 지었으므로 사망이 모든 사람에게 이르렀느니라”(롬 5:12)는 자기 현실을 알지 못합니다.
우리가 원하는 현실의 모든 문제가 해결된다 해도 변하지 않는 것은 사망의 존재라는 것입니다. 이것이 모든 인간의 참된 현실로 주어져 있습니다. 사망이라는 현실에서 세상의 모든 권력보다 나은 능력은 죽은 자 가운데서 살아나신 그리스도의 부활입니다. 부활의 능력이 우리를 주장함으로써 다시는 사망이 주장하지 못하는 생명에 속하게 된 것입니다.
여러분에게 현실은 무엇이라고 생각합니까? 그리스도 안에 있는 신자에게 현실은 마음에 악이 가득한 우리를 대신해서 예수님이 십자가에서 피 흘리신 것입니다. 그리고 그 피가 우리에게 의로움이 되어 죄 없는 자로 여김 받고 천국 백성이 된 것입니다. 이러한 참된 현실에서 세상 현실을 볼 수 있기를 바랍니다.
Chapter 40
The Reason of Being Despised
This wisdom have I seen also under the sun, and it seemed great unto me:
There was a little city, and few men within it; and there came a great king against it, and besieged it, and built great bulwarks against it:
Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city; yet no man remembered that same poor man.
Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.
The words of wise men are heard in quiet more than the cry of him that ruleth among fools.
Wisdom is better than weapons of war: but one sinner destroyeth much good. (Ecclesiastes 9:13-18 KJV)

What made Job, who had revered God and eschewed evil, confounded was the reality that he had the disastrous day. Job is not the only one in such reality because we also live in it. Our reality can be described, ‘all things come alike to all’, not ‘if you believe in God, you won’t have a day of disaster.
That’s why we sometimes go through confusion and chaos of faith like Job. It is because our reality goes different from what we thought it would be, proving that although we say we believe in God’s authority and providence, we don’t accept God’s way, written in Verse 14 of the previous chapter, “There is something else meaningless that occurs on earth: righteous men who get what the wicked deserve, and wicked men who get what the righteous deserve. This too, I say, is meaningless.”
Looking at today’s passage, we find a great king who besieged a little city and built great bulwarks to attack it. The little city had no power to be against the king. Then, there was a poor wise man, whose wisdom saved the city from the king. It is no doubt that the wise man would be treated a hero if he saved the city. Yet, it says no one remembered him. Even though the people in the city were saved by the poor wise man, he was not in the hearts of the people. Why is it so?
In Verse 16, it says, “Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.”
Wisdom is better than strength, proven that the poor wise man saved the city from the great king. Yet, the wisdom is despised and his words are not heard. It is probably because the wise is poor. Although it is true that the little city was saved by the wisdom, the people in the city would prefer strength.
In Ecclesiastes 7:19, it says, “Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.”
If it is true, people in the world ought to seek for wisdom. Yet, no one would be interested in wisdom nor admit it because one mighty man can be helpful for the reality.
They got saved by the wisdom of the poor wise man, but it was of the great king. After that, they faced another reality, whose problems can’t be solved by the wisdom. Thus, for those who live, looking at today’s reality, the wisdom of the poor wise man is forgotten, considered the past thing. This is the reason why the wisdom is despised.
If there had been no wisdom of the wise man, there would be no city today. No matter what today is, whether it is painful or peaceful, it is given owing to the salvation of the great king. If the little city had been destroyed, they wouldn’t have what is today. If they were aware of it, the wisdom would be treated more valuably than ten mighty men.
Think of the fact that the reason why the wisdom is despised is because of our nature, following what looks good for now. Then, we will come to see ourselves, despising the grace of God. Even though we are saved by the wisdom of God, still living in the grace of God, we despise the wisdom while following what looks good on us.
In 1st Corinthians 1:24-25, “But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”
It is Christ, sent by God as the poor wise man. He was despised and forsaken by people since there was no beauty in Him, meaning He was not useful for the reality. Yet, He bore our griefs and carried our sorrows and received the punishment for us. He was wounded for our transgressions and He was bruised for our iniquities. The punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. This is the prophesying of Isaiah regarding the Messiah, and Jesus Christ was agonized on the cross accordingly.
Yet, we deem all these are the things of the past, reasoning that there is no more need to mention sins because we are forgiven as we believe in Christ. That’s why we are forgetful that Christ died on the cross, shedding His blood, and look for another Jesus, helping our problems of the reality such as finances and children’s while we are unaware that we are despising the love and compassion of God, giving us Jesus Christ for us.
Our foolishness is that we can’t see our true reality. Although we are living in our sinful nature, we don’t see the reality, described in Romans 5:12, “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned.”
Even if all our problems of the reality we have are resolved, the one thing that can’t be changed is the fact that we are dead in sin. This is our true reality for all. In such reality, the power above all that is in the world is the resurrection of Christ among the dead. Such power put us in the world that can’t be overcome by death.
