<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 42

A Disaster Under The Sun

There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler:

Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place.

I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth. (Ecclesiastes 10:5-7 KJV)

(Sermon)

What does the world people wish to live look like? What do we have to add and change the current one to make the paradise-like world? There are people who are trying to reform the modern Christianity to make the current world a better place to live, believing they can make a better world if they add or change their systems and rules. Consequently, they insist on reformation.

Today’s passage in Verse 6 and 7 may seem the result of reformation, “Folly is set in great dignity, and the rich sit in low place. I have seen servants upon horses, and princes walking as servants upon the earth.”

It is commonly seen in the world that fools and slaves are relatively lower status and weaker in power than the rich and princes, being despised. Yet, the situations are turned upside down. For the fools and the slaves, it is a great world to live.

However, they can’t change the world themselves because they have no power to do so. Thus, the only thing they can do is to wish a ruler who would reform the reality, seeing the unfairness. If the ruler in Verse 5 is the reformist, he has done such work.

What do you think of this? Do you think it would be a better world to live in fairness and justice if the servants took the position of the princes? Not at all. Even if it were, there would still be the differences in status and changes in positions, not the unfair reality.

In order to say the just world, all are to be the same either in low or high status. Yet, it is impossible to be realized. Even if there were a king who would control the whole world, he wouldn’t be able to make such world. Thus, it is vanity if one tries to reform by lowering the rich and making princes walk, disregarding the sinful nature.

Do you think the world is evil if fools are in low status and servants walk, and the world is good if the fools gain high status and slaves are rich? Good and evil of the world must be perceived by what the nature of men is, not the system, order or rank in the relationships of men because the world is where sinners live, misjudging things in such nature, sin.

No matter what orders are systems in the world, there is nothing good. Even though it may momentarily seem fair that folly and servants are in high position, it is unfair for the rich and princes, thinking fools don’t qualify to be in that position and servants must walk.

Since we are self-centered beings, we think it is good only if we are benefited. Yet, it is bad if we have losses and hardships. However, there is a drawback in such thoughts. That is, we are forgetful that we can also be the causes of someone else’s losses and hardships. This is the same drawback of those who would try to reform the modern Christianity because they are missing their nature while proclaiming the reformation.

In Verse 5, it says, “There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as an error which proceedeth from the ruler.”

It says the error that comes from the ruler is an evil, but we can’t be sure of the error of the ruler. We can interpret the rule as a king, who can’t be perfect since he is a human. All are imperfect. We can even find errors from those who pursue the justice of the world. In other words, all men are under the evil world.

It might be true that the rules used his power to give the fools high status and make slaves ride horses. Then, he might have thought to himself such reformation made the world better. It is his error that he considers himself good by doing whatever he thinks good.

For instance, those who are passionate in bringing people to church see themselves good in gospel work, but they are missing the fact that they are the very ones who need to be guided by the Lord. Therefore, it is an error that those who work for God see themselves good in faith, which is the disaster of the world because they don’t know they are disgracing the forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ and rather trusting their own works and righteousness in the ignorance that there is no one good.

We would understand disasters are natural ones like tsunamis or earthquakes, causing the losses of lives and properties. Yet, the true disaster is to ignore the forgiveness of the cross because such ignorance is the cause of the eternal destruction. Therefore, it is the very disaster of the modern Christianity that we don’t think of the essential reason why reforming the seemingly unfair systems hundreds and thousands times won’t work for the Body of Christ.

God has no interest in making the current world a better place to live. It is not good to God that the ignored in low status receive high social position and servants ride horses in power. It is because what is good to God is to know Christ, whom God sent. No matter what social status one has, it is a disaster that one is ignorant of Jesus Christ. Thinking that it is the reality that we don’t know what the true disaster is while we are in the disaster, there is nothing better than the one who has nothing to do with sins by the forgiveness of the blood of Jesus Christ!
