사탄이 인간에게 파 놓은 함정 같지 않은 함정이 있습니다. 바로 나라고 하는 존재입니다. 내가 나에게 함정인 것입니다. 인간은 이 함정을 극복할 수 없고 스스로 벗어날 수도 없습니다. 심지어 함정을 함정으로 알아보지 못하고 자신이 함정에 빠져 있음을 눈치 채지 못합니다. 그래서 함정 같지 않은 함정이라고 말씀드린 것입니다. 자신을 함정으로 인정할 사람은 없을 것이기 때문입니다.
이처럼 인간이‘나’라고 하는 함정에 빠져있고 벗어나지 못한 상태에 있는 증거는 자기중심으로 자기를 위해 사는 것입니다. 그래서 하나님을 자신이 관계된 현실에서 생각하기 때문에 하나님이 행하시는 모든 일의 결과가 자신에게 유리하게 되기만 원하게 됩니다. 하나님의 뜻도 계획도 자신이 원하고 예상한 대로 되기만 바랍니다. 하지만 하나님은 우리의 예상을 무너뜨리는 방식으로 일하신다는 것을 하루하루의 현실에서 확인하고 경험하게 하신다는 것을 알아야 합니다.
본문에 보면 “함정을 파는 자는 거기에 빠질 것이요 담을 허는 자는 뱀에게 물리리라 돌들을 떠내는 자는 그로 말미암아 상할 것이요 나무들을 쪼개는 자는 그로 말미암아 위험을 당하리라”(8,9절)는 말을 합니다.
사람이 어떤 일을 할 때는 목적이 있고 예상하는 결과가 있습니다. 함정을 파거나 담을 헐고 돌들을 떠내고 나무들을 쪼갤 때 무작정 아무런 목적 없이 그 일들을 하지 않습니다. 함정을 판다면 짐승을 잡겠다는 목적이 있을 것이고, 원하는 짐승이 함정에 빠져서 잡히는 결과를 예상하기도 합니다. 그리고 그 짐승을 어떻게 처분할 것인지에 대한 계획을 세워 놓기도 할 것입니다.
자기 집의 담을 허는 일도 계획과 목적 없이 하지 않습니다. 담을 헐고 새로운 담을 쌓겠다거나 이웃과 좀 더 가까운 관계가 되기 위해 담을 허는 것도 있을 것입니다. 돌을 떠내는 것이나 나무를 쪼개는 모든 일에도 분명 이유가 있습니다. 그것이 생활의 편리를 위해서든 금전적 이익이든 분명한 것은 자신을 위한 일이고 행동이라는 것입니다.
그런데 전혀 예상하지 못한 결과를 초래할 때가 많습니다. 어떤 용도로 함정을 팠든 목적은 자기를 위한 것인데 오히려 함정에 자신이 빠져버린 것입니다. 여러분도 그런 경험을 많이 할 것입니다. 지붕을 고치기 위해 사다리를 타고 올라가다가 떨어져 심하게 다치기도 하고 등산을 하다가 발을 다치거나 길을 잃고 헤매다가 죽기도 합니다. 우리가 뉴스에서 대하는 사건 사고들이 그렇게 전혀 예상하지 못한 결과로 다가오는 것들입니다.
사람들은 이런 경우 자신의 실수나 운이 없어서 당하는 것으로 생각합니다. 그리고 후회를 합니다. 함정을 괜히 파가지고 빠졌다고 생각합니다. 담을 헐지 않았으면 뱀에게 물리지 않았을 것이고, 돌들을 떠내지 않았으면 다치지 않았을 것이고, 나무를 쪼개지 않았으면 위험을 당하는 일도 없었을 것이라며 자신이 한 일을 후회하는 것입니다.
신자는 모든 것이 하나님의 주권아래 되어진 일이라고 말합니다. 내가 판 함정에 빠지는 것이나 담을 헐다가 뱀에게 물린 것들도 모두 하나님의 주권으로 연결되어 있습니다. 그래서 신자에게는‘하나님은 왜 우리의 계획이나 예상과 다른 결과를 주시는가?’라는 생각이 있어야 합니다. 예상과 다른 결과에 실망하고 낙심만 하는 것은 하나님의 주권을 믿는 신자에게는 어울리지 않기 때문입니다.
우리는 삶의 계획을 세우고 계획에 따른 결과를 예상합니다. 그리고 예상하는 결과가 현실이 되기를 바라며 하나님을 부르고 기도합니다. 하지만 하나님께는 하나님의 뜻이 있고 계획이 있습니다. 신자는 하나님의 뜻과 계획을 위해 사용되는 도구로 부름 받은 것이고 도구가 도구답게 사용되기 위해 필요한 것은 자기의 선택과 계획을 불신하는 것입니다. 이것이 우리의 계획과 다른 결과를 주시는 이유라고 할 수 있습니다.
어떤 계획도 세우지 말라는 것이 아닙니다. 사람이 계획 없이 살 수는 없습니다. 다만 예상하지 못한 다른 결과가 주어졌을 때‘나의 신앙생활에 문제가 있어서’라며 자신이 책임지려고 하지 말라는 것입니다. 예상한 결과가 주어졌다 해도‘내가 신앙생활을 잘해서’라며 자기에게로 공로를 돌리지 않아야 합니다. 우리의 행함이나 신앙생활이 원인이 되어 나타나는 결과는 없기 때문입니다.
10절을 보면 “철 연장이 무디어졌는데도 날을 갈지 아니하면 힘이 더 드느니라 오직 지혜는 성공하기에 유익하니라”고 말합니다.
말이 무딘 연장은 일하는 사람을 힘들게 합니다. 그런데도 무디어진 연장의 날을 갈지 않고 계속 사용하면서 힘들다고 하는 것은 분명 미련한 것입니다. 일이 힘든 이유가 날이 무디기 때문인 것을 알면 날을 갈 것입니다. 따라서 지혜는 자신의 연장이 무디어졌음을 알고 날을 가는 것입니다. 이것을 기독교 신앙에 빗대어 생각해 보면 할 말이 많습니다.
가장 말하고 싶은 것은 율법은 무딘 철 연장과 같다는 것입니다. 무딘 연장은 연장을 사용하는 사람을 더 힘들게 하는 것처럼 율법, 즉 인간의 행함과 실천으로 자신의 공로를 쌓고 그것을 빌미로 자기 계획의 성취를 위해 하나님의 도움을 받고자 하는 것은 무딘 연장이 무딘 줄을 모르고 사용하는 미련한 사람일 뿐입니다.
11절에서“주술을 베풀기 전에 뱀에게 물렸으면 술객은 소용이 없느니라”고 말합니다.
술객의 주술이 뱀을 다루기 위한 것이면 이미 뱀에게 물린 자에게 주술은 아무 효력이 없습니다. 이것이 사탄의 함정에 빠진 인간의 실상입니다. 이미 사탄에게 물린 자로 살아가는 인간에게 어떤 주술이 효력이 있을까요? 술객의 주술을 인간적인 수단과 방법으로 빗대어 생각해 본다면 신자에게 중요한 것은 이미 뱀에게 물린 것이 인간의 실상임을 아는 것입니다. 그렇지 않으면 인간의 수단과 방법이 무용지물인 것을 모를 것이기 때문입니다.
술객의 주술이 소용없는 우리에게 예수님이 오셨습니다. 뱀의 머리를 치고 우리를 구원할 자로 오신 것입니다. 이 모든 것이 모태에서부터 자기 백성을 택하신 하나님의 자비와 긍휼에 의한 것입니다. 이처럼 우리는 창세전에 계획되고 모태에서부터 실행되는 하나님의 선택과 간섭에 의해 신자로 존재하는 것입니다.
우리는 하나님의 뜻과 선택과 계획에 의해 삽니다. 그리고 그 결과는 영원한 생명입니다. 이것이 인생이 성공입니다. 나의 계획과 전혀 다른 결과가 주어지는 현실을 경험하면서 나의 계획을 불신하고 하나님의 계획만을 신뢰하게 하는 것이 하나님이 간섭하시는 이유입니다. 그래서 계획과 다른 결과는 실망이나 낙심이 아니라 성공의 유익으로 작용합니다.
Chapter 43
The Unexpected Result
He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him.
Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby.
If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.
Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better. (Ecclesiastes 10:8-11 KJV)

There is a trap that is not like a trap that Satan has dug into men. That is ‘self.’ One is a trap for oneself. No one can overcome or avert such trap. No one can even notice it or the condition of being trapped. That’s why I said it is a trap that is not like a trap. No one would admit it.
Likewise, the evidence of the statement above is that all men live for themselves. Thus, we think of God related to our reality, wanting to be benefited by all the work God is doing. We even want the will and plan of God to become what we want. However, we ought to realize that God works in the way that breaks down our expectation in our daily lives.
In today’s passage, it says, “He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him. Whoso removeth stones shall be hurt therewith; and he that cleaveth wood shall be endangered thereby” in Verses 8 and 9.
As we work for something, there is a purpose and expectation. It is not likely that We dig a pit, break a fence or remove stones without a purpose. Digging a pit is to trap animals, expecting to catch some. We even make a plan afterwards.
When we break down the fence, we have a reason to do so. It could be either building a new one or keeping it no fence so that we can be closer to our neighbors. Removing stones and cleaving wood has a certain purpose respectively. Whether it is for the convenience or monetary benefits, it is for ourselves for sure.
However, we can face unexpected results many a time. No matter what purpose we dug a pit for, we might end up being trapped there. I’m sure you understand what I’m talking about. When we climb up to the roof to fix something, we could fall off and get hurt, or when we hike, we could trip over or get lost and die. We can hear all these kinds of news on TV.
People think that this is the case that they are mistaken or have no luck, and regret it, thinking, ‘I shouldn’t have dug it’, ‘had I not broken down the fence, I wouldn’t have been bitten by the snake’, ‘had I not removed the stones, I wouldn’t have been hurt’, or ‘had I not cleft the wood, I would be fine.’
Believers say that everything is done under God's sovereignty. Our falling into a trap dug by ourselves or being bitten by a snake while tearing down a wall is connected with God's sovereignty. That is why believers should have the thought, 'Why does God give different results from our plans and expectations?’ It is because disappointment is not suitable for believers, believing in God's sovereignty.
We make a plan of life and anticipate the consequences of the plan, and pray for God, hoping that the expected results will become our reality. Yet God has God's will and plans. Believers are called to be the tool used for God's will and plan, and what is needed for the tool to be used as a tool is to distrust our choices and plans. This is why we receive different results than our plans.
I don’t mean not to make any plans. We can’t live without a plan. Yet, when we encounter an unexpected result, we are not to think it is our responsibility due to our lack of devotion for God. It is vise versa that even if we get an anticipated result, it is not of what we have done either because there is no consequence, caused by our works or life of faith.
In Verse 10, it says, “If the iron be blunt, and he do not whet the edge, then must he put to more strength: but wisdom is profitable to direct.”
The dull edge of a knife makes one hard to work with. It is not wise for one to complain about the knife while not sharpening it. If one knows the reason of the hard work, one will sharpen it for sure. Thus, the wisdom is to sharpen the knife while being aware it is dull. Applying this to our life of faith, there are many things to talk about.
Most of all, the law is like the knife with the dull edge. As the knife makes one have a hard time, it is foolish that we would get help from God with our service through the law, that is, our works and practice, in order to achieve our goals.
In Verse 11, it says, “Surely the serpent will bite without enchantment; and a babbler is no better.”
If the enchantment of the charmer is to control the snake, it is no use when the charmer is bitten by the snake already. It is our condition, trapped by Satan. What enchantment would be effective when we are already bitten by Satan? If we consider the enchantment of the charmer as our methods and ways, it is the most significant that we recognize our condition, being bitten by Satan. Otherwise, we wouldn’t know our methods and ways are useless.
Jesus came to such people like us, who are helpless and hopeless with any enchantment. He came to smite the head of Satan and be our the Savior. All is of the mercy and compassion of God, who chose His people before their birth. Believers are the ones living in God’s choice and intervention as He had planned before the creation of the universe and conduct His plan at their mothers’ womb.
We live by the will and choice and plan of God, and the consequence is the eternal life. This is the successful life. As we are experiencing unexpected results in life, we distrust our own plans, and come to trust only in God’s plan, which is the purpose of God’s intervention of our lives. That’s why unexpected results don’t produce disappointment or discouragement, but usefulness of successful life!
