<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 44

The Lips Of A Fool

The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself.

The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.

A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him?

The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city. (Ecclesiastes 10:12-15 KJV)

(Sermon)

There is a saying, ‘a mouth is the entrance of disasters’, teaching a lesson that we have to watch out what we say; otherwise, we will be in trouble. In fact, we could experience difficulties due to mistakes of our words such as being hurt or misunderstood by others. In this sense, the teaching is very important in life, but it is not necessarily to be separated to teach in Christianity only.

In James 3:5-6, it says, “Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth! And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.’

Having a look at it, we understand it is imperative we be careful of what we say, coming to conclude that we could end up being in terrible consequences by our careless words, thinking the tongue is a fire, which can burn and destroy ourselves. Although we might be troubled by our reckless saying, it can’t drag us down to hell.

Yet, James is saying the tongue is the world of iniquity, setting on fire of hell, implying there is something to say, bringing us to hell. That is nothing but the gospel. From this perspective, we can learn that James is not teaching to watch out our tongue but pay attention on the fact that our words could bring others to hell.

In today’s passage, it says in Verses 12 and 13, “The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious; but the lips of a fool will swallow up himself. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness: and the end of his talk is mischievous madness.”

‘Swallow up himself’ means death, that is, the eternal destruction. As spoken earlier, it is nothing else but the gospel that swallows us up. Thus, it has nothing to do with the carefulness of words because all that a fool, not knowing the gospel, says is foolishness, resulting in swallowing himself up.

On the contrary, it says the words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious. Likewise, the results of the words of a wise man and a fool are totally opposite. Thus, it is common sense that we ought to follow the words of a wise man since the words are gracious. Yet, we can’t hear the gracious words as they are, by which the words are despised. This is the reality of the world.

It is already uttered in Ecclesiastes 9:16, “Then said I, Wisdom is better than strength: nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, and his words are not heard.”

In Verses 14 and 15, it says, “A fool also is full of words: a man cannot tell what shall be; and what shall be after him, who can tell him? The labour of the foolish wearieth every one of them, because he knoweth not how to go to the city.”

We don’t know what the future brings us. There is no one knowing what will happen a year ahead, not even the next day. Yet, there is the future which God has brought us, different from things we experience in the world. Although people would go to fortune tellers, wishing to find out their future, God has spoken to us that one is neither aware of nor interested in.

In the Gospel according to John 16:13, it says, “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”

When the Holy Spirit comes, He leads us to the truth, but the truth He leads us is not what the world can think of because it is not of visible but invisible. It is the life of the resurrection by the blood of Jesus Christ, which is the future, promised to the believer.

Therefore, the believer, foreseeing his or her glory eternal, wouldn’t consider things on earth as the result or fruit of the life of faith. This is the believer, a wise man. In contrast, a fool, not knowing such glory, focuses on what is visible as the fruit of faith. As the beginning of the words of a fool is foolish, the end is nothing else but the madness, the eternal condemnation.

Since a fool is ignorant of the future, he is unaware of the current either, picturing christians in the modern Christianity believe they will be blessed depending on their devotion to God, not seeing their nature rooted into sin, regardless of their works. That’s why all the works of a fool does nothing but makes him exhausted.

The Israelites entered Canaan by the covenant of God, not by the results of their zealous works of life. Our entering heaven is the result of the promise of God as well, not our labor. The people of God’s chosen can enter heaven by the fulfillment of the covenant of God through the blood of Jesus Christ on the cross.

Believers, being aware of such, wouldn’t expect the results of their works recklessly. They would rather be careful that their works might be the pitfall for themselves, ending up despising the work of Christ. Such thoughts are the mind of a wise man, resulting in the words that reveal the nature of sin, not our merits of works. If such words of a wise man sound gracious, it is also the trace of wisdom.

Believers know they don’t even deserve the eternal glory because they are rebuked of the sin, the righteousness and the judgement by the Holy Spirit. They come to see the irresistible grace of God when realizing they are fit to the judgement, not the glory of heaven at the death of Jesus Christ. If it is the wisdom, we can find the difference between the words of a wise man and a fool. If you know your future, the eternal glory of heaven, what sounds gracious to you is nothing but the gospel, guiding you to the cross of Jesus Christ!
