<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 48

O Young Man

Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.

Therefore remove sorrow from thy heart, and put away evil from thy flesh: for childhood and youth are vanity. (Ecclesiastes 11:9-10 KJV)

(Sermon)

It is a difficult task to explain what the Bible teaches in an easy way because it doesn’t tell us in our common sense. If we feel the Bible is not easy to understand, it is not because of vocabulary or complicated sentences but what it says is not what we want.

In Verse 7, it says, “Truly the light is sweet, and a pleasant thing it is for the eyes to behold the sun.”

Although we say it is the grace of God for us to see the sun and the light, we can’t realize it in our daily lives because it doesn’t make us get what we want.

There would be no one who values the beholding the light of the sun in life. We would value of being acknowledged by others. To such, it sounds too dry to say it is sweet to see the sun because it is irrelevant to what we pursue.

Then, what’s the matter? Is the Preacher telling us something too idealistic?, or is it our problem? In fact, we are wrong. What we follow for our goals in life is too far from the pleasure of watching the light of the sun. Thus, we would be dull on the pleasant thing, taking care of things on earth. Even if we confess the grace of God, it is doubtful of the verity of our confession.

In Psalm 19:1, it says, “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork”, and in Verses 5 and 6, it says, “Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race. His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.”

Sky and the sun is nothing more than sky and the sun to us, a part of our nature. Yet, the Psalmist, David, is proclaiming the glory and the work of God through them. His confession shows us his recognition of God, far different from that of ours.

We might say the sky is sunny, blue or cloudy, but can’t see the glory of God. We could express the sunlight is too bright, but are ignorant of the work of God. Therefore, we can find we are the problem itself, as reading the Bible.

Do you think we are all different people from each other? The answer may depend on what value we see it through. If it’s what and how much we have, there are many different kinds of people because we all have different amount of things. Then, beholding the sun is meaningless because it is not of what we have but for all in general. For those who would show off the possession to others, it is no value or feeling.

However, if it is on the matter of death, there is no difference because all see the darkness no matter what we have seen before. Thus, keeping the mind of what we are before God, not possession, we learn of the grace of God that we can see the sun today in joy and thankfulness.

In Verse 9, it says, “Rejoice, O young man, in thy youth; and let thy heart cheer thee in the days of thy youth, and walk in the ways of thine heart, and in the sight of thine eyes: but know thou, that for all these things God will bring thee into judgment.”

It says to enjoy our youth, but we think it is passed, concentrating on the present. No matter how good it was in the past, if we have a bad condition now for living, nothing is pleasant to us. It would be all that we recollect the good old days for avoiding the current bad conditions. In this sense, the verse doesn’t mean to remember old times and enjoy them, but rejoice the youth.

In Luke 18:17, it says, “Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.”

All grow from childhood to adulthood. It is not the matter of physicality but mind. The mind of dependance in childhood disappears as we are seeking for the value of possession on our own. ‘Young man’ means one who has no such mind of a child. He represents all of us, engrossed with our own interests, living for ourselves by our own strength in sinful nature.

Yet, the Lord Jesus says no one will enter the kingdom of God unless one receives it like a child, resulting that no one can enter it since no one can go back to the childhood. Knowing the truth, ‘childhood’ means to us that it is the world of living, not for ourselves with our own power, not depending on ourselves, but yearning for the dependence on God, which is the pleasure.

The malefactor who was crucified next to Jesus told the Lord to remember him, knowing the death on the cross was not an end for Him. To him, Jesus says, “Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.” Likewise, we live as the ones who are with Him as He proclaimed to the man on the cross.

The world is under the judgement of God. All face the darkness of death. It is the immovable reality to all of us. In such reality, there is nothing better joy and pleasant news that the Lord Jesus be with us in His love. He will make us in the mind of the dependance on God and Him only, entering the kingdom of God!
