10.전도자는 힘써 아름다운 말들을 구하였나니 진리의 말씀들을 정직하게 기록하였느니라
11.지혜자들의 말씀들은 찌르는 채찍들 같고 회중의 스승들의 말씀들은 잘 박힌 못 같으니 다 한 목자가 주신 바이니라
12.내 아들아 또 이것들로부터 경계를 받으라 많은 책들을 짓는 것은 끝이 없고 많이 공부하는 것은 몸을 피곤하게 하느니라

현대인들에게 진리의 말씀은 관심 밖의 일입니다. 교인들이 성경을 쓰고 읽는 것을 자랑하지만 그 또한 진리의 말씀을 향한 관심으로 보기에는 어렵습니다. 말씀을 향한 관심이 성경을 읽고 쓰게 했다면 자기 자랑이 나올 수 없기 때문입니다. 이처럼 성경을 쓰고 읽는 자신에게로 관심이 향할 수밖에 없는 것이 인간의 습성임을 생각해 보면 진리의 말씀은 피하고 싶은 거북한 내용과 짐으로 다가오는 것이 사실입니다. 그래서 진리의 말씀을 환영하고 좋아할 인간은 애당초 세상에 존재하지 않았던 것입니다.
요 6:26절에 보면 “예수께서 대답하여 이르시되 내가 진실로 진실로 너희에게 이르노니 너희가 나를 찾는 것은 표적을 본 까닭이 아니요 떡을 먹고 배부른 까닭이로다”라고 말씀합니다.
이것이 진리의 말씀에 대한 인간의 현실적인 반응이고 실상입니다. 말씀이 아닌 떡이 자기의 생존에 중요했던 것입니다. 예수님의 말씀은 이러한 인간을 부정하는 것으로 다가올 수밖에 없습니다. 바꾸어 말하면 인간에게 가능성을 두면서 인간이 한 일을 인정하고 선하고 의로운 것으로 높여주는 말씀은 없다는 것입니다. 따라서 제아무리 하나님의 말씀이라고 주장한다 해도 인간을 부정하지 않고 인정하는 말이라면 진리의 말씀이 아니라 헛된 인간의 말일 뿐임을 생각해야 합니다.
11절에서도 전도자는 “지혜자들의 말씀들은 찌르는 채찍들 같고 회중의 스승들의 말씀들은 잘 박힌 못 같으니 다 한 목자가 주신 바이니라”고 말합니다.
지혜의 말씀을 전하고 가르치는 사람들은 많습니다. 중요한 것은 한 목자가 주신 말씀이냐는 것입니다. 한 목자에게서 말씀을 받았다면 지혜자들은 모두 같은 말을 하게 됩니다. 같은 말을 한다는 것은 똑같은 내용으로 말한다는 것이 아니라 인간의 상식으로 믿어질 수 없는 말을 하게 된다는 점에서 같은 것입니다. 그래서 말씀을 찌르는 채찍 같고 잘 박힌 못 같다고 말합니다.
찌르는 채찍은 목자가 가축을 이끌어갈 때 사용하는 도구라고 합니다. 끝이 뾰족해서 가축을 찌르면서 목자가 원하는 방향으로 가게 하는 용도입니다. 잘 박힌 못은 목자가 천막을 칠 때 땅에 고정시키기 위해 땅에 박은 못을 의미한다고 합니다. 이것을 말씀을 표현한 것은 말씀이 우리에게 그와 같은 역할을 하기 때문입니다.
말씀들이 찌르는 채찍과 같고 그 말씀들이 모두 한 목자가 주신 바라면 목자가 되시고 말씀이 되신 예수님은 우리에게 찌르는 채찍으로 오셨다는 의미가 됩니다. 따라서 예수님의 말씀은 아픔이 되어야 합니다. 그런데 현대 교회는 말씀에서 아픔이 되는 것을 제거하고 귀를 즐겁게 해줄 다른 말을 첨가합니다. 그래서 진리의 말씀을 말하고 듣는다고 하면서도 인간의 헛됨에 대해서는 무지한 것입니다.
9절에 보면 “전도자는 지혜자이어서 여전히 백성에게 지식을 가르쳤고 또 깊이 생각하고 연구하여 잠언을 많이 지었으며”라고 말합니다.
잠언을 읽어보셨습니까? 대개의 기독교인들은 잠언을 인생을 살아가는데 필요한 지혜의 교훈으로 생각합니다. 예를 들어“게으른 자여 개미에게 가서 그가 하는 것을 보고 지혜를 얻으라 개미는 두령도 없고 감독자도 없고 통치자도 없으되 먹을 것을 여름 동안에 예비하며 추수 때에 양식을 모으느니라”(잠 6:6-8)는 내용만 봐도 열심히 일해서 미래를 위해 저축할 것을 가르치는 교훈으로 받아들이기에 적절하다 할 것입니다.
잠언에는 이런 내용들이 많기 때문에 잠언을 인생에 교훈을 주는 내용으로 생각하지만 그렇게 되면 잠언은 찌르는 채찍으로 다가오지 않게 됩니다. 결론은 말씀을 대하는 우리의 자세가 잘못되어 있다는 것입니다. 개미와 게으른 자에 대한 내용도 우리가 게으른 자임을 찌르고 있습니다. 왜냐하면 하나님을 믿고 복 받아 잘 살겠다는 기대 자체가 열심히 일하지 않고 복을 누리겠다는 게으른 자의 속성을 보여주는 것이기 때문입니다. 결국 복을 기대하고 하나님을 찾는 인간성 자체가 악한 것입니다.
이처럼 진리의 말씀은 우리에게 찌르는 채찍이 되는 것이고 채찍에 의해서 목자가 의도하는 길로 가게 되면 인간의 모든 것이 부정되고 오직 말씀으로 오신 그리스도만 참된 생명으로 고정되는 은혜가 있게 되는 것입니다. 그래서 말씀을 잘 박힌 못으로 표현하는 것입니다.
지혜가 없고 진리의 말씀이 아픔을 주는 찌르는 채찍이 되지 않으면 인간은 끝까지 자신을 옹호하고, 긍정하는 방향으로 갈 뿐입니다. 자신이 부인되는 자리에서 누리는 자유를 모른 채 자신의 힘과 수고로 원하는 것을 채워야 만족해하는 인간 본연의 길로만 갈 것입니다. 그것이 인간의 비참함이고 불행인데도 불구하고 그것을 알지 못하기 때문에 모든 것이 헛되다고 하는 것입니다.
12절에 보면 “내 아들아 또 이것들로부터 경계를 받으라 많은 책들을 짓는 것은 끝이 없고 많이 공부하는 것은 몸을 피곤하게 하느니라”고 말합니다.
사람이 많은 책을 짓고 많이 공부한다 해서 자신이 부정되는 것은 없습니다. 오히려 많은 책을 짓고 공부를 많이 했다는 것이 다른 것을 인정하지 않는 고집으로 남을 뿐입니다. 그래서 책을 짓고 공부한다 해도 인간이 달라지는 것은 없습니다. 때문에 전도자는 지혜 없는 모든 것에 대해서 ‘헛되고 헛되도다 모든 것이 헛되도다’라고 말한 것입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 인간의 완악함은 지혜보다는 자신의 삶을 편안하고 부요하게 해줄 것에만 마음을 둡니다. 이러한 마음을 개조할 방법은 없습니다. 많은 책을 짓고 몸이 피곤할 정도로 공부를 해도 인간은 자기 유익만 추구하는 완악한 존재일 뿐입니다. 이러한 악함을 드러내는 것이 말씀이기 때문에 찌르는 채찍이 되는 것입니다.
분명한 것은 찌르는 채찍에 의해 아픔을 느끼게 되는 것이 하나님의 은혜라는 것입니다. 말씀으로 인해 내가 버림받아 마땅한 쓸모없는 악한 자로 드러나는 아픔이 우리를 심령이 가난한 자가 되게 하고 거기에 예수 그리스도의 생명이 부요로 자리하기 때문입니다. 이것이 하나님의 백성을 찌르며 인도해 가는 말씀의 역사입니다.
우리는 항상 말씀에 의해 판단 받아야 합니다. 말씀에 의해 판단을 받는다면 우리는 항상 죽음의 존재로 드러나게 됩니다. 그리고 십자가에 죽으신 예수님의 은혜만이 가장 복되고 귀하고 가치 있는 것으로 우리의 심령에 못 박히게 되면서 예수님으로 충분하다는 감사가 있게 됩니다. 이것이 진리의 말씀이 역사하는 현장이고 증거입니다.
Chapter 50
The Word
And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.
The preacher sought to find out acceptable words: and that which was written was upright, even words of truth.
The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.
And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh. (Ecclesiastes 12:9-12 KJV)

People in the modern society are not interested in words of truth. Although christians boast themselves about reading the Bible, it is still far from the interest in words of truth because there would be no boasting if the interest made them read it. Thinking it is our sinful nature that we are interested in nothing but ourselves reading and writing the Bible, it is true that words of truth are something that comes to us heavy and we would even want to avoid. That’s why there would be no one who would welcome words of truth in the world.
In John 6:26, it says, “Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.”
This is our reaction and reality of the Word, which is for our survival on earth. The Word of Jesus comes to us, breaking all these. In other words, there is nothing the Word accepts our possibility such as works or goodness at all. Thus, if there is one who acknowledges men, one says all in vain no matter what one speaks of the Word of God.
In Verse 11, the Preacher says, “The words of the wise are as goads, and as nails fastened by the masters of assemblies, which are given from one shepherd.”
Many people teach the words of the wise. The thing is if all is of the One shepherd. If it is of the One, people would say the same words. It doesn’t mean the same contents but it is the same as it is impossible for us to believe in our common knowledge. That’s why it says the words are goads and nails well-fastened.
A goad is a tool shepherds use to guide sheep. It has a sharp end, poking the sheep to lead for the directions as the shepherd wants. A well-fastened nail fixes a tent into the ground. The Preacher tells us of these as the Word does to us as such.
When the Word is like goads and of the same Shepherd, that means the Lord, the Word in flesh, comes to us as the goad poking us. Thus, the Word of the Lord should cause to be pain for us. Yet, preachers in the modern Christianity would remove the pain and add something pleasant to hear. That’s why we are ignorant of our vanity although we learn and share the words of truth.
In Verse 9, it says, “And moreover, because the preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yea, he gave good heed, and sought out, and set in order many proverbs.”
Have you read Proverbs? Most christians say the Book of Proverbs is for gaining the lessons of the wisdom in life. For example, in Proverbs 6:6-8, it says, “Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise: Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler, Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest”, interpreting it is a lesson that we should save our money for the future.
It is true that the Book of Proverbs contains such contents, but, then it is not a goad poking us, meaning that our attitude toward the Word is wrong. The ant and sluggard pierce us as the lazy because it is our nature that we would receive blessings from God, wishing to live well on earth. In the end, it is our sinful nature that we seek God for our betterment.
Likewise, as the Word of truth pierces us like a goad, we walk on the way of the Shepherd while denying ourselves and being fixed only in the life of Christ, the Word in flesh. That’s why the Word is illustrated as nails firmly embedded.
We would go forever in the direction of acknowledging and praising ourselves if there were no wisdom or the Word, giving us pain in piercing. We would only live in the way that we are satisfied by our own efforts and power, without knowing the liberty, which comes from where we deny ourselves. Despite that it is our miserableness and pity, it is all vain since we know not who we are.
In Verse 12, it says, “And further, by these, my son, be admonished: of making many books there is no end; and much study is a weariness of the flesh.”
There is no self-denial no matter how many books we write or how much we study. Many books and much study would rather make us persistent, refusing others. Therefore, there is no change of us in making many books and much study. That’s why the Preacher says vanity of vanities; all is vanity without wisdom.
Nevertheless, our maliciousness makes us want to seek for our riches and comfortableness. There is nothing that can change us. Whatever we do, we are nothing but sinners, seeking for our own benefits. Since the Word reveals such characters of ours, it is a goad, poking us.
One thing for sure is that it is the grace of God that we feel the pain by the Word, leading us to the place where we see ourselves who deserve the judgement of God, making us poor in heart, where there is the life of Jesus Christ in richness. This is the work of the Word of God, guiding His people by piercing them.
We ought to be judged by the Word. Then, we are exposed as the dead, where we see the grace of Christ on the cross as the most valuable and precious thing in thanksgiving, fastened in our hearts. We call this the evidence and the work of the Word of God!
