<설교>

Chapter 51

The Whole Duty Of Man

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil. (Ecclesiastes 12:13-14 KJV)

(Sermon)

If we follow the testimony of the Bible, not turning aside to the right or left, we come to meet Jesus Christ, shedding His blood on the cross, and find what God has done in Christ. This is the fundamental of the interpretation of the Bible. As we are walking along the road, getting to know the work of God, we are going to realize that the faith that we have taken for granted without a doubt is fake one, man-made for human sake.

It is revealed at the incident of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil that we fell to the ground where we seek for our own glory and will, not God’s. Since such nature can’t be changed, we can’t radically forsake our own thoughts and obey the will of God at all.

Nevertheless, preachers keep telling the congregations in the emphasis on the obedience of the Word of God. Yet, it can’t be too wrong to say that such emphasis is toward the demand of the preachers’ greed unto the people while disguising it with the name of God because we can’t help thinking of the fallacy of ‘the obedience of the Word of God’ on the path of the interpretation of the Bible described above.

Christians believe the obedience and practice of the Word of God is what they are supposed to do because that is what they’ve learned at church, thinking there is nothing wrong. I’m not saying we don’t have to obey the Word of God. The thing is that if we teach and learn without the will of God in the Bible, we might end up moving in the direction of man-made religions. Most of all, we must carefully pay attention to what Jesus said in the rebukes of Judaism, valuing the obedience and practice of the Word of God most.

In the closing of the Book of Ecclesiastes, the Preacher says in Verse 13, “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.”

‘Hearing the conclusion of the whole matter’ means all the matters we seek for come to a conclusion of ‘vanity’, which can be called the main subject of the Book, meaning there is nothing we can do. In other words, as we follow the guidance, we can learn that we, human beings, are incapable and powerless.

Verse 14 is also related to our reality, “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

‘Work’ means revealed one and ‘secret thing’ is hidden. Saying, ‘I live by my conscience’, can be categorized in the secret thing. The verse means all is exposed and put unto the judgement of God whether it is work or secret. Since we can’t produce what God sees good, all is the object of the judgement of God. This is what he means by saying ‘the conclusion of the whole matter.’

It is the wisdom that the Preacher came to learn in such conclusion, “we ought to do our duty and keep the commandments of God.” It is the conclusion of the Book as well. However, if we don’t understand ‘commandments and the whole duty of man’, we might fall into a pitfall again. We mustn’t see it as our works or practice.

As spoken earlier, the reason why the Preacher says ‘keeping the commandments for this is the whole duty of man’ is because he came to learn that the conclusion of man is the judgement of God. Then, would he mean to obey the Word of God since we are helpless to produce goodness? If so, it means he would contradict himself and nothing else.

More to say, we can often hear many contradictions in the modern Christianity. For example, preachers say the grace of the cross and emphasize of the work of the life of faith. The grace of the cross can’t accept any work of man because faith makes us realize we are sinners, disobedient to God, looking up to Christ.

Faith, making us believe in the cross, denies all the possibility of human work, but we can still see the emphasis on the practice of the life of faith, which is a contradiction. It is the ignorance of what the Preacher says in the book. It is a phenomenon that we are unaware of our vanity even thou we are reading the Bible.

‘Keeping the commandments and the whole duty of man’ is not something we must do but to show us the relationship with God. This is the duty of man.

Yet, people seek God for their own belly, fulfilling their wills and benefits. Jesus also once said in John 6:26, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled”, mentioning our nature. He meant we value our physical needs over the relationship with Him.

Such nature leads us to the judgement of God, which is our conclusion. That’s why the Preacher admonishes us, saying in 12:1 and 2, “Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; While the sun, or the light, or the moon, or the stars, be not darkened, nor the clouds return after the rain” and the whole duty of man, keeping the commandments.

Then, what is ‘revering God and keeping His commandments’? In the Book of Deuteronomy 6:1-2, it says, “Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it: That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.”

According to the verses, we can find that why God brought the Israelites into the Promised Land and had them occupy it is to have them keep the Word of God. Then, they ought to have done it, but they ended up seeking for their own comforts, which caused them to have the weak such as orphans, widows and strangers.

They should have realized that they didn’t deserve to enter the land while passing through the wilderness. All they did in the wilderness was sin, revealing the fact that they deserved nothing but the judgement of God. Nonetheless, God had them occupy the land so that they would know all He did to them was the grace of God. Therefore, Israelites are known in the knowledge of the grace of God.

If Israel fears God, there should be a confession, ‘it is God’s grace that we live in this land although we should have all died in the wilderness. It is ‘keeping the commandments of God’ as well because God gave them the statutes for the realization of their sin.

We learn the answer of the meaning of life through the Preacher is, needless to say, Christ. We come to see the love and grace of God, calling us, sinners, into the salvation in Christ and letting us filled with Christ not with earthly things.

What we deserve is, no doubt, the judgement of God. If we realize it as our conclusion daily, all that God has done to us in Christ comes to us the compassion and mercy of God. We do nothing but praise God as we find we are saved even though we don’t deserve to be. This is fearing God and keeping His commandments and the whole duty of man in Christ. And, living by such duty is the words of wisdom that the Preacher leaves unto us today!
