<설교>

Chapter 88

Faith and Tribulation

Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience; and experience, hope: (Romans 5:1-4 KJV)

(Sermon)

Believers understand what life means. That doesn't mean they know what will happen to them in advance, but that means they know whatever happens to them, it can never separate them from the love of God. Thus, they can be bold of their lives because they know they are captured by the love of God and the very love will lead them to the will of God in the end even if there are many hindrances.

Believers are also aware of what the end of life means to be without God. Knowing that it is perishing no matter how rich or poor one is, they solely believe in Christ, who has come to them as the Savior over their situations. Thus, it can be truly stated that believers' boldness is not from their own wills or mental status but from the knowledge of Christ and dwelling in Him. Furthermore, the very boldness can overcome the world.

In the passage, we can see, "but we glory in tribulations also", which means there must be something unshakable in tribulations. That is the true satisfaction, which we can't find in the world. What we can experience in the relationship with God leads us in the satisfaction and enables us to rejoice in our sufferings.

What Paul says in the passage might not sound realistic to many, and there may be some who don't even want to agree with him, thinking, 'what satisfies me is in the world.'

Such can't face what God has provided in heaven due to the fact that they are eager to get what the world provides. They are thirsty for the world, resulting in the fact that they fall into disappointment and complaint when facing sufferings and difficulties.

Then, what are you hoping for now? What do you think makes you have a happy life? It may be money or children. If one suffers from a disease, one will hope to get well. Then, imagine those who are already enjoying all the world offers and having no difficulties in life. Do you think they are truly happy?

Although we assume if a sick person gets well, he or she will be happy, the reality swings the other way, proven by healthy people. Physically healthy ones are not thankful for their health nor happy for that because they can't be sufficed with their physical health.

Of course, patients with diseases may envy healthy ones, thinking, 'I wish I were like them', but if they recover from their health problems, they won't be satisfied with their recovery, but will pursue what they can enjoy with their healthy bodies. This is who we are in nature. I am sure you also admit it with your experiences in your life.

Nevertheless, why can't we whole-heartedly turn our hearts toward the true happiness from the relationship with God? It is because we are following what we can perceive with our own eyes rather than spiritual things, which give us true happiness. We want to be pleased with things around us now.

In other words, even though we know we will be betrayed later by what we are happy with now, we can't give it up because we are not in the deep relationship with God and we are not aware of the value of heavenly things.

Taking a look at Verse 1 and 2, we read, "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."

Paul says that the true satisfaction that makes us rejoice in our sufferings is to lead us to the grace of God by experiencing the peace through the Lord, by which Paul can hope of the glory of God. Then, who can gladly agree with the satisfaction that Paul says? They are the ones who hope for the glory of God like him; otherwise, there wouldn't be any thankfulness or joy for the grace of God and peace by Jesus Christ.

The reason Paul was hoping of the glory of God was because he came to enjoy the peace with God. He was sensing that no one could hope for the glory of God due to the sin in us.

Paul supports the idea described above in Romans 5:9-10, "Since we have now been justified by his blood, how much more shall we be saved from God's wrath through him! For if, when we were God's enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!"

When we became the enemies of God, we were under the wrath of God, which means the eternal curse. Even if men make all dreams come true in the world, it is the reality of all men, detained in the condemnation forever. It is true that those, whose eyes are opened to see the reality, are inclined to appreciate the salvation they have received by the Lord Jesus Christ.

Furthermore, it is sufficient for them to rejoice for the truth that they, who were the enemies of God, have been reconciled with God by the changing power of the blood of Jesus Christ.

That's why Paul says in Verse 11, "Not only is this so, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation."

Thus, 'rejoicing in sufferings' belongs to believers, who have come to realize who they really are in their sinful nature and come to understand that the true happiness in the world is the joy, given to the cursed ones like them because they are to rejoice only for Christ by questing for the new world.

Of course, we can't sense the glory that Paul is talking about, but we know the end of men in sin is the judgement of God. We also know that all the riches in the world will eventually disappear. Even though we are aware of them, if we see ourselves still devouring the worldly things, what do we come to hope for?

True believers can see themselves who can't deserve to participate in the glory of God, and can't help being thankful that they have been deemed righteous, reconciled with God, invited to the eternal salvation by the resurrection of Christ. Having in mind that we wouldn't be able to get out of the curse without His shedding His blood, we can't say anything else but Christ is the only hope we have.

Although Paul rejoiced in his sufferings, we can't command someone by saying, "rejoice" because it was neither his ability nor can it be ours. Since our sinful nature makes us think we want to enjoy the world as much as we can before going to heaven, we can never rejoice in our sufferings.

Paul says, "and not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

And patience, experience; and experience, hope." He is not telling us these things as practical matters we have to produce either.

Tribulation, patience, experience and hope Paul says in the passage are produced in us when we are in the relationship with the Lord. In other words, the same things would turn out to be hurt, despair, resentment, grievance for those out of Christ. Consequently, if one rejoices in sufferings, that means one appreciates the love of God, holding one no matter what situations one is in, and knows one is possessed by God.

Faith enables believers to see what Christ has done because they currently live in the work of Him. Even though they always see their sinful nature, they also know their reality, being the righteous by the blood of Jesus. Therefore, they rejoice with what He has done for them and look forward to the glorious day when they will partake with the Lord forever.

With the joy of waiting for the day, they can endure as if their sufferings were passing fast. Since they view the tribulations as God's intervention, holding them in His hand solid, they would appreciate the love of God, leading them to the truth, deepening their hearts with faith, rather than be resentful. This is called, 'experience', with which believers come to be joyful for the glory, hoping for the new world, rather than the world in which they are living now. They are called, 'people of faith.'

In 2nd Corinthians 1:3-4, it says, "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

We can meet the God of all comfort in our tribulation, which we can't control, but we believe all things are controlled by God according to His will. That's why our salvation is possible. We call this, 'comfort'!
