<설교>

Chapter 90

Faith and Healing

So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.

And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.

And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD showed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee. (Exodus 15:22-26 KJV)

(Sermon)

Israel is a covenant people, who believe in the covenant of God. 'Believing in the covenant' means to view the world in the covenant. In other words, if there are no covenant point of view and interpretation but self-centered understanding of the reality of the world, it is neither to know the covenant nor to believe in it.

Israel received God's covenant. Thus, God was with them and guided them to fulfill the covenant. You should be careful about what it means. Many christians take for granted that God is with them and God helps for them, but the truth is that God be with them to fulfill His own covenant.

What it means is that all the reality that God be with us is given neither for our comforts nor for our benefits but for the methods and opportunities to testify the covenant. Thus, those who believe in the covenant view and interpret the world in the covenant.

Yet, most people are not interested in the covenant of God because their interest is solely of the world. As a result, it is impossible for those who are thirsty for their comforts in the world to view their reality in the covenant, resulting in the fact that they falter according to their reality though saying God be with them. They can't find that there is a new reality in the covenant.

Israel resided in Egypt for 430 years as a people of God's covenant. Living in Egypt for 430 years means that Egypt was their reality. Thus, the exodus from Egypt for Israel means to get out of their reality and enter a new reality, which is the promise land by God.

Then, what if they would enter the promised land in Egypt point of view? The land would be like Egypt. Thus, God revealed their Egyptian way of thinking, which is flesh-centered, and taught them how to discard it. For this reason, He led them in the wilderness for forty years.

In Verse 26, it says, "And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee."

God said He wouldn't give them any diseases if they would keep His commands. 'Keeping all His statutes' means to know oneself who can't keep God's commandments. This is a right interpretation of 'keeping His statutes.' Consequently, to understand that one is a sinner and deserves to be judged by God is to keep the law.

Then, what is the reason God said, "for I am the LORD that healeth thee"? God as a Healer means Israelites were the sick. If so, facing the Lord means to see Him as a patient.

In contrast, if one considers himself healthy, one doesn't need 'the healing God.' One is ignorant of one's reality, being sick. By such sinners, Jesus Christ was crucified.

Therefore, 'God that heals us' has nothing to do with our physical illnesses and physical healing. Of course, there are many stories of healing the sick, but we should know it doesn't mean that the physical healing itself was the purpose of what was done.

If the verse meant physical healing, God would have to heal all sick believers to testify the Word of God is true. Yet, all believers are not healed. On the other hand, those who are physically healthy would think 'the healing God' has nothing to with them.

But, I am not saying you don't need to pray to God for healing because 'God that heals us' is not a physical meaning.' Of course, if we are physically sick, we can't help asking God to heal us. Apostle Paul, as well, prayed to God for his illness three times, but God didn't answer his prayer. Paul ended up understanding the meaning of the thorn of flesh, confessing, "I am that I am by the grace of God."

Believers pray to God for anything such as healing or even money. Of course, knowing who God is and the Word of God, believers discern what to pray and what not to pray, but the thing is that all are captured by their desire for themselves. If so, no one can justify by saying, "I don't pray for physical healing nor being rich."

'Not praying for them' is not an evidence of believers. Our sinful nature would beautify ourselves to be better than others by hiding what's inside.

One thing for sure is that God gives us knowledge that there is something far more important than healing or being rich. Then, we would desire and pray to be ones who rejoice in thanksgiving for His marvelous grace. This is the prayer we can have by the Lord.

"For I am the LORD that healeth thee" can be applied to all. In other words, all are sick, needing to be healed. Thus, what we need is the awareness of 'I am a person who needs to be healed by God'; otherwise, no one would seek for the healing God.

In the passage, having crossed the Red Sea, although Israelites walked three days and nights, they couldn't find water at all. When they came to Marah, they found water but couldn't drink it because it was bitter, causing them to grumble against Moses. Then, Moses prayed to God, and God showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.

Yet, the situation doesn't end there but continues to Verse 26. They needed to drink water and drank the water because it became sweet. The problem was solved, but why does the verse say that after God tested them?

We can see that the diseases He brought on the Egyptians are the ones in ten disasters, performed in Egypt. Thus, God meant that if Israelites didn't keep the commandments, God would give them the diseases he brought on the Egyptians, revealing that Israel was no different from Egypt in terms of God's judgement.

However, what the Israelites were in the wilderness was the same as the Egyptians. They proved themselves that they still had Egypt point of view. That's why they experienced the rotten Manna, collected for the next morning.

Additionally, in spite of the fact that God told them there would be no Manna on Sabbath day, some went to collect it then. As a result, they didn't keep the statutes of God, deserving to have the diseases. However, God didn't judge them and led them to the promised land.

What they should know in this situation is 'the grace of God', which made the promised land be their reality. Knowing this is knowing their sinful nature. This is to keep God's commandments. This is God's healing.

All men after Adam's fall are deadly sick. We can be called 'terminal ill patients.' The reason is that we are ignorant of God's grace although we live by it. Our sinful nature makes us be responsible for our life. We wouldn't give up a thought that we should be responsible for our salvation as well.

We would also be responsible for faith, so we would try to attend worship meetings and do good to be responsible for our faith, ending up focusing on morally good life.

God's healing is to let us know our sin and let us understand that our all beings are built on the grace of God. That's why the healing God came in the name of Jesus Christ on earth. He came for the sick. Thus, only those who know their sickness can welcome Jesus.

Therefore, He was crucified by those who were ignorant of their sickness. When the Holy Spirit comes to such, they will find that they are the sinners who crucified Jesus on the cross and they are saved by the grace of God and they come to live in thanksgiving, moved by the infinite grace of God!
