<설교>

Chapter 91

Faith and the Will of God

Rejoice evermore.

Pray without ceasing.

In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (1st Thessalonians 5:16-18 KJV)

(Sermon)

One of the most commonly spoken words among christians is 'the will of God', and one of the most commonly misunderstood words is also 'the will of God.' Many people easily say what they are doing is the will of God. Many preachers tend to beautify themselves by saying it. What they probably mean by that is that they are servants of God, so no one should be against them and the congregations should obey what they say, which is non-sense.

What you ought to remember regarding the will of God is that God has never said what men do can be considered the will of God. If what men do could be deemed the will of God, men would be able to do things built based on the will of God. If so, men would be able to fulfill the will of God.

Do you think men would be able to fulfill the will of God? Not at all! It is absolutely non-sense to say that men, who couldn't keep God's commandment of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, would fulfill the will of God. Men are mere tools for God to fulfill His will.

Our thought must be destroyed that the will of God is to obey what we think is good. We must accept the truth that our thoughts and discernments are all self-centered and evil, which is unrighteous. Only then, can we find that what we think is biblical is not the will of God.

Do you think you can discern what is the will of God and what is not based on your life? For instance, is attending the worship meeting on Lord's day the will of God or not? The answer of the question seems so easy that 'attending the meeting' is the will of God and 'not attending' is to discard the will of God and to follow self-willed. This is a common understanding of the will of God for christians.

Then, if one attends the meeting every Lord's day, is one living according to the will of God? And, if not, not? I want you to think of it thoroughly in terms of meaning, not just superficially. If you think of it on the surface only, you might object to it by saying, "then, is it O.K. not to attend the meetings?", which is an obstacle to understand what I am trying to tell you.

You have been reading and hearing the Bible for a long time. Then, have you heard or seen in the Bible, saying, "attending the worship meeting is the will of God"? As far as my Bible is concerned, there is none, saying such.

Nonetheless, it is our common understanding that attending the meeting is the will of God because we have the stereotype of attending of the meeting as a correct behavior for christians. Many conclude that attendance of the worship meeting is the will of God based on the formula that acts and behaviors of faith are the will of God.

However, if we admit that the attendance itself is the will of God, those attending regularly will proudly think they ate living according to the will of God. Thus, what we must be careful is not to value on our outwardly acts and behaviors; otherwise, Pharisees and priests would be acknowledged as the ones who lived according to the will of God best.

In the passage, it says, "Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you."

Apostle Paul says that the will of God for us in Christ is to rejoice evermore, to pray without ceasing, and to give thanks in every thing. Do you perceive it as a behavior or act outwardly? In other words, do you think Paul meant to demand what we have to do?

The passage is impossible with what we do. 'Evermore', 'without ceasing' and 'in every thing' have a meaning of having overcome all situations and environments, which means that 'rejoicing', 'praying' and 'giving thanks' are not to be done conditionally, but to be done regardless of conditions. Let me reiterate that it is impossible with what we do.

When can you realize of your sin in your daily lives? If you say that you find your sin when you don't attend the worship meeting, you must know you are definitely wrong because the sin of believers is not 'not to attend the meeting', but not to rejoice and give thanks to God for all of His guidance although they always say 'the grace of God' and they accept they are under the grace of God.

If we don't rejoice and give thanks, that means we are looking at ourselves at current situations. It is not that we are captured by the love of God, but that we are not pleased with what is given to us now, causing us not to rejoice and not to give thanks. Our prayer is also rather to ask for what we want than the will of God. This is the sin we should be aware of everyday.

Therefore, the will of God that the passage tells us is not our rejoicing nor giving thanks, but to know the love of God because when we come to know the love of God and are grabbed and guided by it, we would rejoice, pray and give thanks, rather than be anxious about our situations and discomforts. Thus, we can conclude that the will of God for us is to know the love of God that He sent His Son to die on the cross and save us out of death.

In John 6:38-39, it says, "For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father's will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day."

His coming down from heaven is not to lose anyone God gave Him and to raise them up at the last day. Then, is the will of God to save God's elect? It is to redeem His people on the surface, but to reveal His love inner heart of God.

The precondition of 'raising us up at the last day' is that we should be dead. This is our reality. Raising us up means to raise up the ones who don't deserve to be saved. Furthermore, it can be done by the blood of Jesus Christ, the only Begotten Son of God.

What we focus on in this work of God is the love. Thus, what we ought to see at the agony of Jesus, dying on the cross, is not our salvation, but the love of God. Then, the will of God is not in our salvation but in the kingdom of God, reigned by the love of God.

Consequently, the will of God is to let the people of God know Jesus Christ and lead them to the realm of the greatness of the love of God. This is the will of God for us in Christ.

It is to gather the people of God in the realm of His love and let them overcome their given situations and conditions and make them pray and give thanks in every thing, living daily while caught up by His love and grace in the new world.

Taking a look at the Bible, the will of God is expressed in various ways. The will of God in the passage and John 6:38-39 that I mentioned earlier is different on the surface. Moreover, the will of God is our sanctification in 1st Thessalonians 4:3. Furthermore, in Romans 1:10, it says, "Making request, if by any means now at length I might have a prosperous journey by the will of God to come unto you."

Looking at the verses above, they might seem to show us diverse meanings of the will of God, but when we come to understand the true meanings of them, we will realize that each and every verse shows us that the will of God is leading us to the kingdom of God while holding us by the love of God. Letting us know His love, it makes us rejoice, pray and give thanks, resulting in the praise of His love.

Therefore, the will of God has nothing to do with what we do in the world. Whatever we do, this is the will of God that we rejoice and give thanks in the awareness of His love and grace. Believers come to live, desiring the will of God is done in their daily lives. This is the will of God and God fulfills it without failing.

Thus, faith means for one to believe one's life is in the will of God. Faith doesn't make one take any advantages of fulfilling one's own desire, but put one's will aside and desire the will of God fulfilled. By the very faith, believers are to believe they are taken care of under the love and grace of God. This is what believers truly enjoy everyday.

When knowing the will of God, believers come to realize His love and grace vividly. They find that the life with God's intervention is such blessing, guiding them not to be entangled by visible things because they have found there is a more glorious and blissful world that is invisible now than the world that is visible here!
