<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 92

Faith and Leadership

But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren.

And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.

Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ. (Matthew 23:8-10 KJV)

(Sermon)

What Christians in modern Christianity demand preachers is not to preach the gospel. It is an ironic reality that although it is true that preachers are to preach only Christ and Him crucified, it is also known that christians don't want to hear the gospel, which makes me deeply saddened.

Then, what do they demand preachers? It is probably to reign and lead the congregation well and grow the size of it. That's why they say 'leadership' as one of the qualifications for preachers. If so, it is an evidence that they are obsessed with triumphalism, not the gospel. 'The growth of the congregation depends on the leadership of the preacher' also shows us how seriously modern Christianity is corrupted, pursuing the worldly victory.

One thing for sure is that leadership is needed for growth and success. The world is proceeding toward growth and success. The capability of one who is responsible for a group can be proven by growth and success. Thus, people would welcome one who has leadership for their leader. They would expect to see their group grow and succeed when they have their leader with excellent leadership.

However, the existence of 'ecclesia' is not on growth and success, which was proven by the work of the Lord and His apostles. If Jesus had come here for growth and success, He would have been welcomed as the Messiah by the Jews rather than died on the cross since His power would have been more than enough to reestablish the glory of King David, which they wanted.

Yet, Jesus died on the cross, and in such there was no leadership found at all. The way He walked was not for growth and success, but regression and failure, which had nothing to do with leadership. This was revealed when His disciples left Him on the way to Calvary.

'Leadership' is a qualification or virtue that is needed for one who leads a group. Thus, if there is a group that doesn't need a master, it is unnecessary to talk about leadership. This is church, 'ecclesia.' The reason why the congregation consider their preacher a master is that they view him at the worldly aspect of high and low levels, not regarding if the gospel is preached.

Thus, what is required for modern Christianity is to change how to view preachers. That is, a preacher of a congregation is a mere function that delivers the gospel to the congregation, and not one that is to be judged by the congregation as high and low. Otherwise, the preacher deemed a master and the congregation considering the preacher a master would totally go astray with the gospel.

The Lord said in the passage, "But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Neither be ye called masters: for one is your Master, even Christ."

He criticized the scribes and the Pharisees, who were teaching the law of Moses. They thought to themselves as masters, and the Jews thought so, too. Yet, the Lord said master is not many but one and all the rest are brethren.

If so, their Rabbis were not masters because they were more than one. Father is in heaven and the Master is one, Christ, so no one can be called a master. Consequently, all are in the relationship of brotherly manner.

The scribes and the Pharisees wanted to be treated as masters while teaching the law, which is vouched by Verse 6 and 7, "And love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the chief seats in the synagogues, And greetings in the markets, and to be called of men, Rabbi, Rabbi."

What they had in mind can well be seen in modern Christianity as well. That is, they call their senior pastors their teachers, spiritual fathers and masters. Actually, the preachers thought to themselves like that first. Since they are at the position of teaching, they view the congregation only to be taught, resulting in a thought that they are holier than them.

Of course, I don't mean there is no need of one who teaches at church. There are needs of preachers and teachers for the gospel. Furthermore, the congregation should respect them who are in preaching and teaching the Word of God. If the congregation cherish the gospel, they ought to. Yet, they must never view the preachers great ones because there is only One deemed great at christian gatherings, Jesus Christ.

The problem is that preachers would like to be seated there for the great One. As a result, they would think of the congregation lower and demand them to serve. It is prevalent that the true function of preachers has faded away and preachers demand the congregation to serve them by their superior knowledge of the Bible.

What I can, should and must tell you is the Word of the Lord as it is, and not more than that nor less than that. A preacher is not a master. Thus, there is no need of leadership for the preacher. If other preachers read what I am telling you here, it would be disagreeable to most of them, but if a preacher delivers the Word of God as it is, the preacher is not a teacher, spiritual father, nor master at all. That's why there is no master at a christian gathering.

If there is someone who calls himself a master, he will do nothing but destroy the relationship of brethren because there is one horizontal relationship among the congregation.

I might sound like breaking down the orders of a church. Some might say, "if a preacher is just a brother, not a master, then, anyone can preach and lead the congregation such as baptizing or benediction."

Yet, that's not what the Lord meant. Truthfully, there is no qualification of baptizing or benediction at all in the Bible. The congregation simply follow the functions of pastors for church orders. The important thing is that whatever preachers do can't make themselves any different over other brethren. They are neither great ones nor masters. Once again, they do the functions only.

Then, do you think our Master, Jesus Christ, had leadership? As I have told you earlier, He had no leadership that the world talks about because growth and success were not the reason of His coming to the world.

The way He walked is the cross. I don't understand why many overlook this truth. If the way our Master walked is the cross, our way ought to be the cross as well. Yet, there is no growth or success on the way to the cross. It rather tells us death and failure.

In Matthew 16:24-25, it says, "Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it."

Likewise, following the Lord is losing one's life. Following the Lord by losing one's life is the way He walked. Do you think preachers can make you walk this way? They can't even walk themselves the way the Lord did because their lust and greed block them. Then, how can they be teachers, spiritual fathers, or masters for the congregation?

The One who can make you walk the Lord's way is the Holy Spirit. He enables you to see the way of life by teaching and giving you understanding of the Word of God and lets you know the way is our way to walk. How could preachers do the job? No matter what kind of leadership a preacher has, he can never make you look up to the Lord nor love Him. Therefore, leadership of preachers are a worldly product by those who are captured by visible things of the world, not of Jesus Christ.

'Ecclesia' is under the rule of God. The Head of church is Jesus Christ. He is the One, who is building up the church on the gospel, and He is the One, growing the church by making us obey the Word of God. Thus, at christian gatherings, there is no need of preachers's capability nor leadership at all.

In 1st Peter 4:11, it says, "If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen."

It says there is nothing done by the power of men. Of course, there is nothing done by preachers, either. That's why the congregation are not to look forward to their preachers nor need their leadership, but to demand the speakers to focus on preaching and delivering the Word of God as it is.

We can often hear that there are leadership training sessions here and there, but all are in vain. If we view Jesus Christ as our Master and only follow Him, there is absolutely no need of leadership. There are only believers, who are captured by faith, walking the way, glorifying God!
