<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 93

The Example of Faith

Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.

For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ:

Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things. (Philippians 3:17-19 KJV)

(Sermon)

It is a common understanding among christians that preachers should be different from the congregation. In other words, preachers ought to be examples of faith for the congregation. That's why many think, 'this is what preachers should be and look like', resulting in the fact that many preachers make efforts to fit for the category: preachers should look like such and such.

Of course, in order to preach the Word of God, it is good that they should be respected rather than criticized for their moral behavior by others. Yet, we can't conclude that that is what preachers should be or look like because no matter how much they try to be examples of faith for the congregation, they are still in their sinful nature. Even if they could show others their moral behavior outwardly, their nature is nothing different from that of the congregation. Even in the mind of preachers who only preach the gospel in their entire lives, lusts are in them.

Therefore, it is a pure misunderstanding and big mistake that preachers are better than the congregation in terms of sin problems because they know the Bible more and have stronger faith. They might have better knowledge of the Bible, but it doesn't mean they have better faith. Frankly speaking, they might have more temptations to take advantage of the Bible to get what they want.

Some say that preachers should display their decent characters, but what are they? Are they gentleness, proper wordings, facial expressions or nice manners? No way! Those are not more than the range of social morality because they can be seen by anyone. Buddhist monks in temples can display them a lot better. That's why I am telling you that it is unbiblical to say, 'preachers should look like such.'

In addition, if there were such characters, they would have to be applied to all christians because all are in Christ. Thus, speaking of such characters is to divide preachers and congregation, and it is no more than excuses to criticize preachers.

In Verse 17, it says, "Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample."

'Be followers of me' might sound arrogant, saying, "My behaviors are perfect, so you guys have to do what I do." In fact, we usually can't tell others to be followers of us because not only does it sound arrogant but also there is no one who thinks perfect.

Then, is Paul telling us to be his followers because he thinks himself perfect? He is the one who thought to himself a chief of sinners, always experienced of the captivity to the law of sin, confessed he was in the body of the death. As the one who was in such above, how could Paul have told others of perfect or imperfect? Thus, he didn't mean to tell others to follow his behaviors.

In 1st Corinthians 11:1, it says, "Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ."

There is something strange in the verse. It may make sense that he tells others to follow Christ if he says, "as I am of Christ." Then, why is he saying to follow him, not Christ? Additionally, what does he exactly mean by saying, "I am of Christ"?

If he is of Christ, he should be Christ-like. On the one hand, his receiving persecution from others may look like Christ because Jesus was also in agony. However, all the sufferings Paul received were not his intention but the results of the preaching of the gospel. That is, he didn't preach the gospel to get persecutions.

We can understand that 'he is of Christ' means that he walked the way of Christ. The will of Christ was the cross and it was completed right there. In other words, the way of Christ is the cross. Thus, 'Paul is of Christ' is that he walked the way of the cross.

The way of the cross doesn't only mean Christ's agony and death. The purpose of the way is for the glory and name of God, not for Christ's. Thus, if anyone walks the way of the cross, he or she doesn't live for his or her glory nor name. That's what he meant when he said, "I am of Christ."

The reason he told others to follow him is that there were people who were the enemies of the cross of Christ. He meant those who would go back to the law.

In the church of Philippi, there was a group of people who claimed that believing in Jesus Christ was not good enough, needed to be added by keeping the law. They especially said circumcision. Yet, Paul said they were the enemies of the cross because what they were saying was nullifying the meaning of the death of Christ on the cross. Consequently, the matter of enmity of the cross was the inner circle one, not outside of the church.

The common thought of what could be called the enemy of the cross is to claim the necessity of human works and devotion added to faith. This is prevalent in modern Christianity as if this were what the Bible teaches. People don't really want to find out what the true meaning of the cross is, but repulsively say, "if there is no need of our works and devotion, is it fine not to do anything?" because they think they know well of the cross.

Those speaking of the law and circumcision want to make their own achievements,. Yet, the cross never requires any human efforts nor achievements, which were not of faith either. There is what the Lord has done only on the cross. What He did completed everything on the cross. Since the true faith is of that, there is nothing we have to add nor necessity we are required to do. That's the way Paul walked.

He only preached the gospel, vouched by 1st Corinthians 2:2, "For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified." This is the example he would like to tell Philippians.

In Verse 20-21, it says, " For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:

Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself."

'Our conversation is in heaven' means that we are returning to heaven. He was waiting for the Lord, who would change our vile body to His glorious body. This is what we should follow Paul for.

Of course, faith wouldn't be earned even if we wanted. What Paul wants to say here is that when the saints in Philippi see the way Paul walked in his faith, if they see the same they have, their way of life wouldn't be different from that of Paul's. This is what he means by saying, "be followers of me."

"As I am also of Christ" means the same. It doesn't mean Paul voluntarily followed Jesus Christ, but it means the faith of Jesus made him walk the same Christ did. Thus, if we have the same faith Paul had, it is natural that we walk in the same way he walked. As a result, if one teaches human works that we need to do in the law or demands devotion, we can be sure that one's faith is different from that of Paul.

If you would like to seek for an example you want to follow, there is only one, Jesus Christ. Preachers shouldn't be their examples. Thus, if you try to find some examples from visible ones, you are excluding Jesus Christ out of the way of your life.

Of course, I, as a preacher of the Word of God, will walk the way of life that the gospel is facing, but I just believe all will be done by the power of faith, not by my power nor my zeal and devotion. What I also know is you are also led by your faith given,as the gift of God, and guided on the way that the Lord walked.

The reason why we are gathered here together while worshipping and praising God is to make sure we are in the brethren relationship and comfort one another in the joyful heart. Furthermore, if there are ones who are weak in faith, we are here to take their the yoke to share. Thus, what we do outwardly at gatherings mustn't be counted for our life of faith. It is because all are at the same position to look up to the Lord on the cross together.

When not looking at Christ, we can't help looking at men visible, and come to judge and criticize who is better and who is not like Christ, by evaluation with the amount of devotion and work, and personality and so on. This is the way of enmity of the cross. The example of faith that we ought to have is the way that the Lord Jesus Christ walked!
