<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 96

Faith is the Gift of God

For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Not of works, lest any man should boast. (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV)

(Sermon)

Men have become dead since having the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. Thus, we should remember the Bible considers men dead from the beginning, containing the powerlessness of men. No one can voluntarily come to God, sense God, nor know God. There is no possibility of salvation for such.

Nevertheless, if there is one saved, one's interest must focus all on God since there is no other possibility for salvation than the power of God, who can raise the dead to the living, so we are to get into the world of God's grace and love little by little as we are caught by the fact that He has saved the dead like us and made us belong to salvation.

In the passage, it says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Salvation is only through faith. If faith is the gift of God, it means faith is impossible by our own power. In other words, 'I who believe in Jesus' is not made by my will nor zeal, but by God.

Reversely thinking, we can find that 'why don't you believe in Jesus?' is non-sense for who is dead because no matter what we try to do to force or persuade one, one can never believe in Jesus unless God gives one faith. If so, the gospel preaching by saying, 'believe in Jesus Christ', should be understood in the angle of today's verse.

All men come to meet at the seat of 'death.' There is no exception. Serial killers and highly respected moral people all meet and begin there. It is wrong to say that some are good, some are bad in nature. It is the proclamation of God that all have died in sin, which means all men are evil.

Therefore, believers come to confess their salvation is of the grace of God through faith, the gift of God, while gathered in death. They recognize their brotherly relationship by sharing faith, which is vouched by their not boasting themselves. They know it is not of themselves.

Thus, no one praises one's faith or tries to be acknowledged for faith by others at believers' gatherings. 'Acknowledging one's faith' or 'being acknowledged for one's faith' tells us that one focuses on works, which denies the fact that faith is the gift of God and the faith one talks about is not the gift of God.

In 2nd Peters 3:18, it says, "But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever."

'Growing' doesn't mean size increased. Faith mustn't be viewed as a child grows up; otherwise, there would be nothing but competition and differentiation in faith. We might fall into the trap, thinking, 'there are small faith and large faith.'

Apostle says to grow in grace and in the knowledge of Him. It doesn't mean to increase our knowledge about Jesus Christ by learning Him. It ought to be seen as the meaning that we are getting more and more in full of joy and thanksgiving for Christ as we, dead, are led to know the marvelous grace.

Believers belong to Jesus Christ, who is perfect and the fulfiller of all. They enjoy all that is from Him since they are His. That's why believers in Christ are whole and holy.

There is nothing for believers to be demanded to fill in nor complete since they are in the world of perfection, called Jesus Christ. This is the amazing world of grace, allowed to us, who are dead, and all is realized by the faith, given to us as gift by God.

Then, would you dare to think that the story of God would be boring to believers, who are getting to know what is in the love and grace of God one by one? It is the story of God that can never be boring but be thankful and joyous as hearing more and more, which means that the marvelous God-given grace can never be measured.

It might not be wrong that preachers demand faith to the congregation in modern Christianity. We can often hear, "have faith", or "be zealous for faith." Such expressions imply the operator of faith is men, not God, showing full of human works to be acknowledged for faith while ignoring the work of God, giving and edifying faith according to His will.

The faith made of the human religious mind and the faith of God as gift are surely different. The former always focuses on what men are to do under the name of the obedience of God. It makes people want to boast it and be acknowledged for it.

However, we have to notice that the faith as gift by God focuses all on Christ only. Since the world of faith only lifts up and boasts Christ, all believers are equal and fair in gathering of faith as one body.

There is no such salvation by human strength and zeal. We easily hear some say that we are saved through faith and receive blessings by works, but it is totally unbiblical to separate faith and works.

Is there anyone who received the blessing from God by works? I mean the blessing here is that the dead have become the living. There is no other blessing in the world before the blessing that the dead become the living. Thus, those in such blessing consider worldly things rubbish because they have found the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:8)

I have already told you the Bible considers men dead from the beginning. Thus, we should approach the matter of eternal life on the same base. That is, we mustn't forget no matter what one has achieved in the world, one without life will go into the eternal world of death.

The eternal life is the utmost blessing for the dead. Since Jesus Christ is the One, who brought us the life, He gave us the matchless gift. He died on the cross while shedding His precious blood to give us the life.

If one has come to know such blessing, what should one do? There is nothing one should or can do. The only thing one who has received the life can do is to give thanks and boast the name of the Lord for the grace and love. One considers oneself as a mere tool to present His grace and love, which is possible by faith, given by God as gift.

Then, do we have to do something to receive faith? If God gave us faith according to what we do, including our decision to believe in Him, faith wouldn't be a gift but compensation. Furthermore, the compensation would be something to boast about. It is the meaning of the faith, given as a gift, that blocks all human boasting and reveals the grace of God.

I would like to tell you not to be interested in hearing, "if you have faith, you should do such and such"; otherwise, you will focus on what you do and practice while away from the work of Jesus Christ. This is the strategy of Satan.

Faith makes us concentrate on what Christ has done whole-heartedly and makes our hearts broken while looking at our way of walk, which is far from that of His. Such faith leads us only to the grace by the grace of God!
