<설교>

Chapter 98

Faith and Meekness

And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman.

And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.

Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth. (Numbers 12:1-3 KJV)

(Sermon)

As lowliness in the Bible is different from what we think it means, having nothing to do with one's nature or characters, meekness lies in the parallel. Whereas we understand meekness as softened heart or warm hearted in our common sense, the Bible teaches us the totally different meaning of meekness.

Thus, it is imperative that we exclude moral point of view to understand what the Bible teaches. As I have always told you, it doesn't mean we have to ignore morality and ethics, but it means we mustn't interpret the Bible in the box of morality and ethics because what God teaches us through the Bible is not morality nor ethics.

In the passage, Moses married an Ethiopian woman. We can assume a woman was black since she was an Ethiopian, but it is not definite. The point is not if she was black, but Miriam and Aaron's speaking against Moses.

Actually, what they were speaking against Moses was not focusing on his marrying the Ethiopian woman. According to Verse 2, "And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it", we can see they were against Moses by saying that Moses was not the only one God spoke to, but they were, too.

In this sense, although Miriam and Aaron were scolding Moses for marrying the woman on the surface, Verse 2 makes us think of the reason somewhere else. That is, 'marrying her' was an excuse of their being against Moses. Furthermore, God said to Moses, scolded by Miriam and Aaron, "Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth." Thus, in order to know what the Bible teaches us of meekness, we need to know Moses.

His meekness is shown in his marrying an Ethiopian woman because it is the only background for God to say that Moses was the meekest on earth. If some say Moses was not angry at them and accepted their words, and interpret what he did was his meekness, this is the understanding the Bible at the moral point of view as mentioned earlier, which could be proven by anyone in the world.

The reason why God said Moses was the meekest has nothing to do with his nature or character. Moses was in the covenant of God, and he believed God would lead His people accordingly. We are to connect this to his meekness. Thus, regardless of his character, his meekness can't be seen in one who doesn't know the covenant of God.

Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses by saying, "Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us?" Taking a look at what they said to Moses more closely, they were complaining that Moses was not the only one spoken by God, but they were, too. In addition, their complaint was probably caused by their dissatisfaction of their lives in the wilderness.

In Numbers 11, Israelites were complaining against God while reminiscing the food they had in Egypt. We find that Miriam and Aaron joined them, resentful against Moses' leadership. That's why they spoke against Moses, leading the people without discussion with them, by saying they were also spoken by God.

Miriam and Aaron saw their positions among the people. They thought If God spoke to Moses, God spoke to them as well, so they believed they were at the same position of Moses, causing them to think they should be treated differently from the people.

God called Miriam and Aaron and said to them in Verse 6 and 7, "Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the LORD will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream. My servant Moses is not so, who is faithful in all mine house."

They claimed to God that they were prophets as well. Yet, God said, "if there be a prophet", which means they were not prophets God was calling and using. Had there been prophets, God would have known Himself to them and spoken to them in a dream.

In other words, prophets are prophets when God calls, speaks and uses them. Thus, even if a prophet were to hear what God speaks in vision and dream, the prophet would never want to be treated specially while claiming by saying, 'I am a prophet."

Yet, what God said to Moses is different. God didn't speak to Moses in vision or dream, but spoke to him mouth to mouth. And, he was faithful in all God's house. The fact that God spoke to Moses mouth to mouth means that his relationship with God was different from that of Miriam and Aaron. Nevertheless, Moses didn't put himself in a prominent position. We can say it is his meekness.

Considering his position among the Israelites, we find that marrying her wasn't easy for Moses to do. The Ethiopian woman didn't have a high status among the people of Israel. Moreover, She was even a gentile, probably being discriminated by them. His marrying such could damage his image as a leader and cause them to blame him. Nonetheless, he married her, which means he never considered his status or position at all.

Jesus said in Matthew 11:29, "Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."

Jesus didn't walk on earth for His will but the will of God. Thus, he served the people of God for their salvation. This is the Lord's lowliness and that lowliness has become our salvation. Meekness means the fact that the Lord has received His enemy, who crucified Him on the cross. That's why His lowliness and meekness have become our salvation.

Therefore, faith, believing in the cross of the Lord, never leads us a way to lift up ourselves. It rather guides us where we can see our sin, crucifying Him on the cross, from boasting ourselves, and makes us realize the love and grace of God at the death of the Lord, resulting in thanksgiving for His meekness that He has received such sinners like us. This is what is revealed by faith.

Thus, the meekness for believers is to live in thanksgiving for the meekness of the Lord. In other words, it is not what we should do. Therefore, it is not that we would try to be meek in characters, but that we would desire to live in the world of His meekness as learning it. That's why meekness is only possible by faith.

Moses's meekness is not from his nature or character, but from the relationship with God, which is what the covenant of God shows because the covenant of God didn't choose and save us according to our status, position or character, but chose and saved us, who don't deserve to be saved, and keep showing us the unilateral love and grace of God. Jesus came to the world and died on the cross, illuminating the world of the covenant of God.

What is required for you to do for meekness is to focus on the meekness of the Lord. It is rather to ponder how our salvation is done than to think of our being saved. I pray that you hope to see the world of faith in joy and happiness that the meekness of the Lord, who didn't despise sinners like you and me, has become our salvation. This is how we walk on the path of meekness!
