30.예수께서 제자들 앞에서 이 책에 기록되지 아니한 다른 표적도 많이 행하셨으나
31.오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라

예수님이 많은 사람들에게 인기가 있었던 것은 기적을 행하셨을 때입니다. 요한복음에서는 보리떡 다섯 개와 물고기 두 마리로 오천 명쯤 되는 사람들을 먹게 하고도 남은 조각이 열두 바구니에 차는 기적을 보이자 많은 무리들이 예수님을 선지자라 하면서 임금으로 삼으려고까지 했습니다.
베드로와 요한이 성전 문에서 구걸하던 앉은뱅이를 일어나 걷게 했을 때도 백성들이 놀라며 모여들었고 바울과 바나바 또한 나면서부터 걷지 못하는 사람을 걷게 했을 때 그것을 본 무리들이 바울과 바나바를 신으로 여기기도 했습니다.
이것은 지금의 기독교인들도 예외가 아닙니다. 기적에 관심을 두고 있고 기적을 하나님의 전능하심에 의한 역사로 이해하기 때문에 기적을 행한다는 사람은 자연히 인기를 끌게 되어 있습니다. 한마디로 말해서 사람들에게 가장 잘 먹히는 것 중의 하나가 기적인 것입니다.
하지만 신자가 분명히 직시해야 할 사실이 있습니다. 그것은 제아무리 기적을 목격하고 경험했다 할지라도 기적으로 인해서 하나님을 알고 하나님만 섬기는 신자 됨의 길로 가게 되지 않는다는 것입니다. 오히려 기적에 관심을 둠으로 인해서 정작 신앙의 중심 내용인 십자가는 외면하는 사태가 있을 수 있음을 주지해야 합니다.
본문을 보면 “예수께서 제자들 앞에서 이 책에 기록되지 아니한 다른 표적도 많이 행하셨으나 오직 이것을 기록함은 너희로 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하려 함이요 또 너희로 믿고 그 이름을 힘입어 생명을 얻게 하려 함이니라”고 말씀합니다.
예수님 성경에 기록된 표적만이 아니라 기록되지 않은 다른 표적도 많이 행하셨습니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 다른 표적을 기록하지 않은 것은 표적의 의미와 본질이 예수께서 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하는데 있기 때문입니다. 다시 말해서 예수님은 사람들에게 놀라운 기적을 행하는 신비한 능력자로 인기를 얻고자 함이 아니라 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하기 위해 표적을 행하셨던 것입니다.
성경에는 예수님이 행하신 표적만 기록된 것이 아니라 예수를 믿지 못하고 불신한 이야기나 배반하고 도망치고 원수처럼 행한 이야기들이 낱낱이 기록되어 있습니다. 만약 예수님의 신비한 능력을 부각시키고자 하는 것이 성경의 기록 목적이었다면 기적 이야기로만 가득 채워졌을 것입니다. 이점을 생각하면 성경은 분명 놀라운 기적 이야기에 초점을 두지 않는다고 할 수 있습니다.
표적이 예수가 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 믿게 하기 위함이라는 것은 표적이 증거 하는 것은 하나님의 아들이신 그리스도라는 뜻이 됩니다. 즉 표적이 지향하는 것은 그리스도이신 예수님인 것입니다. 따라서 누구든 예수가 하나님의 아들을 그리스도이심을 알고 믿는다면 그는 예수님의 표적을 체험한 것입니다.
그럼에도 불구하고 많은 사람들은 여전히 기적을 보고 몸으로 체험하고 싶어 합니다. 그래서 소위 기적이 있는 교회, 기적을 행하는 목사가 인기가 있습니다. ‘거기에 가면 성령의 역사를 직접 보고 체험할 수 있다’는 유혹에 끌리는 것입니다.
기독교인들이 이러한 유혹에서 벗어나지 못하는 것은 성경을 하나님의 살아있는 말씀으로 보지 못하고 문자로만 인식하기 때문이라고 할 수 있습니다. 성경을 단지 문자로만 인식하기 때문에 교훈적인 내용으로 받아들일 뿐 나에게 함께 하시고 일하시는 하나님에 대해서는 무지하게 됩니다. 그래서 하나님의 살아계심과 함께 하심을 눈으로 보고 체험하는 기적으로 확인하려고 하는 것입니다.
마 16장에 보면 예수를 시험하여 하늘로부터 오는 표적 보이기를 청한 바리새인과 사두개인들에게 “너희가 저녁에 하늘이 붉으면 날이 좋겠다 하고 아침에 하늘이 붉고 흐리면 오늘은 날이 궂겠다 하나니 너희가 날씨는 분별할 줄 알면서 시대의 표적은 분별할 수 없느냐 악하고 음란한 세대가 표적을 구하나 요나의 표적 밖에는 보여 줄 표적이 없느니라”(마 16:2-4)고 말씀하십니다.
바리새인과 사두개인들이 자신들이 인정할만한 표적을 보이라고 시험합니다. 예수님이 그들에게 인정받기 위해서는 그들이 생각하는 표적을 보여줘야 합니다. 하지만 예수님은 세상으로부터 인정받기 위해 오신 분이 아닙니다. 이 말은 우리가 예수님을 그리스도로 믿는 믿음이 사람들로부터 인정받아야 할 필요성이 요구되지 않는다는 의미도 내포되어 있습니다.
예수님이 표적을 보이지 않은 것이 아닙니다. 예수님이 보일 표적은 요나의 표적이라고 하는 십자가입니다. 그러나 세상은 십자가에서 피 흘려죽으시는 예수님을 보면서도 그것이 예수가 하나님의 아들 그리스도이심을 보여주는 표적임을 알지 못했습니다. 이러한 세상이 믿음이 무엇인지를 알고 믿음을 믿음으로 인정하는 것은 불가능합니다.
기적을 보고자 하는 사람들은 기적을 하나님이 자신과 함께 하시는 증표로 생각합니다. 기적의 체험을 통해서 하나님이 함께 하시고 성령이 역사하심을 확인하는 것입니다. 그래서 믿음이 있고 성령을 받았다면 방언을 해야 하고 나아가서 병 고침과 귀신을 쫓아내는 역사가 있어야 한다고 믿는 것입니다. 예수님은 이러한 사고방식에 대해 ‘악하고 음란한 세대’로 규정하신 것입니다.
예수님이 보여주실 참된 표적은 요나의 표적입니다. 요나는 방언, 병 고침, 귀신 쫓아냄과 같은 체험을 하지 않았습니다. 요나에게 있어서 놀라운 체험은 하나님의 명령을 거부하고 도망치다가 물고기 뱃속에 갇히게 되고 삼일 만에 물고기가 토하여 살아난 것입니다.
요나는 자신의 힘으로 물고기 뱃속에서 빠져나온 것이 아니라 하나님께서 물고기에게 말씀하시고 물고기가 요나를 토하여 된 일입니다. 다시 말해서 요나가 행한 기적은 없습니다. 다만 하나님이 행하시는 기적 안에 있었을 뿐입니다.
요나는 물고기 뱃속에서 죽음을 경험했습니다. 그리고 죽음에서 구출하시는 하나님을 체험한 것입니다. 요나처럼 우리는 죄에서 죽음을 경험하고 하나님이 보내신 예수 그리스도의 십자가에서 죽음에 갇힌 우리를 구원하시는 하나님의 은혜와 사랑을 체험합니다. 이것이 예수님이 말씀하신 요나의 표적입니다.
그래서 신자가 예수님을 믿는 것은 믿음으로 놀라운 일을 행하는 것을 의미하지 않습니다. 믿음을 받았으니 그 믿음으로 기적과 같은 놀라운 일을 행하고 실천해야 한다고 생각하는 것은 죽음에서 구출된 은혜와 사랑을 대면한 적이 없는 자라 할 수 있습니다. 영원히 죽음에 갇혀도 마땅한 나 같은 자를 구출하신 은혜와 사랑을 대면하여 알았다면 그것이야 말로 놀라운 기적으로 사건으로 다가올 것이기 때문입니다.
신자는 기적을 행하는 자가 아니라 기적의 세계에 들어와 있는 자입니다. 그것이 십자가입니다. 세상의 어떤 기적도 죽은 자를 살릴 수 없는데 십자가는 죽은 영혼을 생명에 있게 합니다. 그래서 예수님을 믿는 신자에게 기적은 죽은 자의 생명이며 십자가에서 그 생명을 경험하게 되는 것입니다.
고전 1:22-24절을 보면 “유대인은 표적을 구하고 헬라인은 지혜를 찾으나 우리는 십자가에 못 박힌 그리스도를 전하니 유대인에게는 거리끼는 것이요 이방인에게는 미련한 것이로되 오직 부르심을 받은 자들에게는 유대인이나 헬라인이나 그리스도는 하나님의 능력이요 하나님의 지혜니라”고 말씀합니다.
그리스도가 하나님의 능력입니다. 이 말은 우리가 그리스도에게서 자신의 죽음을 경험하고 그의 죽음과 피 흘림에서 생명을 경험하게 되는 그것이 하나님의 능력 안에 있다는 증거라는 뜻입니다. 십자가에서 자신이 죽은 자임을 보게 되면서 구원은 오직 그리스도의 공로로만 됨을 믿게 되는 것이 진정한 기적의 체험입니다.
그래서 예수님의 피의 공로를 믿는 신자는 눈에 보이고 몸으로 체험하는 기적에 관심을 두지 않게 됩니다. 그보다 더 놀라운 기적을 알았고 그 기적의 세계에 존재하고 있음을 알았기 때문입니다.
신자에게는 자신이 그리스도를 알게 되고 믿게 된 것 자체가 기적으로 다가오기 때문에 기적이라고 떠드는 어설픈 것에 대해 마음을 두지 않습니다. 이미 하나님이 행하신 놀라운 기적의 일들이 은혜와 사랑으로 마음에 자리하고 있기 때문입니다. 다시 말하지만 신자는 기적을 행하는 것이 아니라 기적 안에 있습니다.

Faith and Miracle
And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name. (John 20:30-31 KJV)

Jesus was popular on earth when he performed miracles. In the Gospel according to John, when He fed around five thousand people with five barley loaves and two fish and twelve baskets leftover, many would want to make Him their king while calling Him a prophet.
When Peter and John performed a miracle of making a crippled man walk at the gate of the temple, many people were filled with wonder and amazement, and when Paul and Barnabas showed a miracle of making a man lame walk, the crowd considered them gods.
This is not an exception in people of the modern Christianity. It is true that people who show miracles are naturally popular because many have an interest in miracles and assume the work of miracles are done by God. To make a long story short, miracles create popularity.
Yet, there is something believers mustn't miss. That is, no one will come to know God and become a believer living for God no matter what kind of miracles one has experienced. We should remember the meaning of the cross might be blurred to us by having an interest in miracles.
In the passage, it says, "And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."
The Lord performed many other signs, which are not written. Nevertheless, the reason why they are not written is that the essence and the meaning of the signs are to have us believe that Jesus is the Son of God. In other words, the Lord didn't perform the miracles to gain fame as an able man, but to testify He is the Son of God.
In the Bible, there are not only stories of signs shown by Jesus but also the stories of unbelief and betrayal of Him and even runaway from Him, acting like His enemies in depth. If the purpose of the Written Word were to prove He is a miraculous worker, the Bible would be full of stories of displaying miracles only. In this sense, we can be sure that the Bible never focuses on the stories of wonder of miracles at all.
The fact that the signs are to have us believe that Jesus is the Son of God means what the signs testify us is Christ, the Son of God, which means what the signs are directing us to is Jesus, who is Christ. Thus, if one knows that Jesus is the Son of God and believes in Him, one has experienced the miracles He performed.
Nonetheless, many people still want to see miracles with their eyes and experience them in their bodies. That's why churches with so-called miracles and preachers showing them are popular. Many are attracted by the statement, 'if you go there, you can witness the work of the Holy Spirit and experience miracles on your own.
The reason why many christians can't get rid of the temptation of miracles is that they don't recognize the Bible as the Living Word of God and just read it like other books. Consequently, they accept it as a lesson to learn something, but come to be ignorant of God, who is with us in His work. Thus, they would make sure God is alive with what is visible and tangible, called miracles.
In Matthew 16, Jesus said to Pharisees and Sadducees, who asked Him to show a sign from heaven, "When it is evening, ye say, It will be fair weather: for the sky is red. And in the morning, It will be foul weather to day: for the sky is red and lowering. O ye hypocrites, ye can discern the face of the sky; but can ye not discern the signs of the times? A wicked and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given unto it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas. And he left them, and departed." (Matthew 16:2-4)
They tempted Him to do a miracle to acknowledge He is from heaven. In order to be acknowledged by them, He should have shown them what they thought was a miracle. Yet, He didn't come to be acknowledged by the world, which also implies that our faith of believing in Jesus as Christ doesn't need to be acknowledged by people, either.
It's not that He didn't show a miracle when asked by them. The miracle He would show by saying the sign of the prophet Jonas was the cross. However, the world didn't know Jesus is Christ, the Son of God while looking at Him dying on the cross shedding His blood even though God was showing the sign to the world. It is impossible for such to know what faith is and acknowledge faith as it is.
Those who want to witness miracles consider them as a proof of God's being with them. They would like to think God is with them and they are in the work of the Holy Spirit through the experiences. That's why they would say there should be speaking tongues and healing and casting out devils if one received the Holy Spirit. To such, Jesus calls "A wicked and adulterous generation."
The true sign He would show us is the sign of the prophet Jonas. The prophet didn't experience anything such as speaking tongues, healing, or driving out devils. The special thing he experienced was that he was in the belly of the fish for three days while disobeying the Word of God and out of the fish by its vomiting.
Jonas was not out of the fish by himself but by God, making the fish vomit. In other words, there is nothing Jonas did, but he was in the miracle God performed.
He experienced death in the belly of the fish, and salvation out of the fish by God. Likewise, we experience death in our sin and salvation from the love and grace of God, who has saved us captured in death at the cross. This is the sign of the prophet Jonas that the Lord said.
That's why believers' believing in Jesus doesn't mean to do something astonishing by faith. If one says, "we should do things miraculous by faith since we have received faith", we can be sure that one has never experienced the death and salvation by the grace and love of God because if one, who deserves to be captured in death forever, had experienced the grace and love of God, the experience would come to one as the most wonderful thing for sure.
Believers are not the ones who perform miracles, but the ones who are in the world of miracles, which is the cross. Since there is no miracle that can resurrect one from death, the cross brings the dead to life. Thus, the miracle for believers is the eternal life from the dead, which they experience at the cross.
In 1st Corinthians 1:22-24, it says, "For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God."
Christ is the power of God, which means that our experiences of death and salvation in Christ is an evidence that we are in the power of God. It is the true experience of miracle that we see ourselves dead at the cross and come to believe that salvation is solely from the work of Christ.
Therefore, believers in the work of His blood are not interested in miracles that are visible and tangible because they have already experienced far more wonderful miracle and found themselves living in the world of the miracle.
Believers can't be distracted by so-called miracles because they are engrossed in the miracle that they have come to believe in Christ. It is because the grace and love of God is rooted into their minds with the miraculous work God has performed. Let me reiterate it that believers are not the ones who do miracles but the ones who are living in miracles!
