<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 103

Faith and Discernment

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2 KJV)

(Sermon)

There are many stories and topics about 'Jesus.' Moreover, due to the advance of the Internet, many sermons and lectures of the Bible are available to anyone, which could provide an opportunity to understand the Bible in depth.

On the other hand, we shouldn't forget such convenience could lead to a way to accept non-biblical things by favoritism without discernment of what is right and what is false. Believers always need to be concerned about this matter.

Nevertheless, most christians don't seem to be careful about discernment, thinking that discernment only belongs to preachers and church leaders and they just need to do things for churches where they belong to with service and devotional minds. Yet, we ought to remember such thoughts are nothing but leaving ourselves in darkness carelessly.

In the passage, Paul says, "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

What is the world we shouldn't be conformed and what is the will of God we ought to discern? In a sense, it is necessary for believers clearly to understand what Paul meant and live for the Word of God, but we should also say that it's not easy at all because we can't exactly find what Paul intended to say.

That's why we need to remember that the entire book, from Genesis to Revelation, is intentionally written for the Word of God by the Holy Spirit, not by the writers, when we read the Bible and interpret it.

Of course, every christian will say that, but if the Bible is what God speaks to us, I must tell you that there must be consistency throughout the whole Bible, and the consistency must include the work of God to fulfill the will of God. Keeping that in mind, we can conclude that any interpretation to do for men's will is wrong and that is out of the range of the Bible, which we can discern.

In this sense, many preachers are not interested in discerning what God's will is, His good, pleasing and perfect will. They are rather paying attention on enlarging the size of the congregation, so-called the will of God. This is what 'this world' looks like.

In this sense, we can find what Paul meant by saying, "be not conformed to this world." He is saying not to pursue the way of thoughts of the world, discarding the will of God and achieving its own will as a goal. When believers discern what God's good, pleasing and perfect will is, they will find that achieving their own will as a goal and boasting about the achievement are not of the will of God.

There are two kinds of reality in the world. One is that God is incessantly working to fulfill His will, and the other is that people are continually calling God to achieve their goals while neglecting the will of God. The former is the reality of God and the latter is the reality of men. Which reality do you think is true and eternal?

Nonetheless, we would like to live for the reality of men and are actually living for it. What we are doing at church is not irrelevant to it, thinking, 'if I believe in God well, He will help me for my will.' Isn't it obvious that this is not the will of God and this is being conformed to this world in your discernment?

God's good, pleasing and perfect will is to follow Jesus Christ, who is the life. It is to desire to be led to His way, and to put one's will and purpose of life on Him.

Yet, there is nothing we need to ask for our will on the way to follow Him. There is only the glory of God and not ours. We should disregard what we would like to pursue in the world for the glory of God. Simply speaking, it is the will of God that He will lead us on the way of Jesus Christ, totally different from that of the world.

We are the ones who used to belong to 'this world.' As for living in such, we didn't have any discomfort to live for the achievements of our will. We didn't even find any problems to call the name of God to achieve what we thought was for God, not knowing it was mere achievement of our will.

We never knew our devotion to God could be idolizing, assuming that God would be pleased by our passion and wouldn't ignore us and would help and answer our prayer. If we had heard what was just spoken above, we would have disregard it, thinking that it sounds heretic. This is what we used to be.

Since the Lord intervened such people like us, opening our eyes to see what the world of the gospel and the truth is, we have begun to discern what the will of God is. By the discernment, we have come to realize that the world and the way for which we have been living so far are not of God. Thus, the discernment is only seen in regenerated ones, born by the Holy Spirit.

What Paul meant by 'this world' is not only the current generation but all the history of men, living in sin. All of human life, living to achieve for their own will like wishing to be like God by eating of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of the good and evil, is 'this world', to which we mustn't be conformed.

In Verse 1, it says, "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship."

Most people attend the worship meeting in relation to their salvation. It is for them and not God, which also characterizes 'this world.' Yet, Paul said offering our bodies as living sacrifices is the actual act of worship. We often think offering is money we give to God. However, according to Paul, God would accept our bodies as sacrifices. This is the fundamental difference from 'this world', looking for God for their bodies' sake.

Men value what they do with their bodies, wanting to enhance themselves. This is the sinful nature, thinking that their bodies are theirs, not God's.

In 1st Corinthians 6:19-20, it says, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;

you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body."

'Offering our bodies' means that our bodies are not ours but God's. 'Sacrifices' doesn't mean to show our zeal but to tell us that the worship for their bodies is not worship at all. Consequently, we can conclude that the worship of 'this world', considering one's body is one's own, is not worship.

Our bodies are God's own, bought by the blood of Christ. Believing in the truth, they are supposed to live for the glory of God, not their glory. This is what 'be not conformed to this world' and 'prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God' mean.

We are not willingly offering our bodies to God, but God bought us with pay. He didn't buy us as we were useful, but He bought us to let us know His love and grace by showing us what He has done. Thus, believers, who belong to God's, are not to live for their own glory but the glory of God. Believing in this truth is to discern what God's good, acceptable, and perfect will is!
