<설교>

Chapter 97

Faith and Lowliness

Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth. (Zechariah 9:9-10 KJV)

(Sermon)

'Faith and lowliness' means that to be lowly is only possible by faith, which could be interpreted that modesty has nothing to do with morality and ethics. I am sure many people will oppose to the statement. It might sound like 'claiming uselessness of morality.'

In fact, as far as salvation is concerned, morality is useless because there is no possibility for salvation in ethics and morality even a bit. Of course, many christians would say morality and ethics are not for salvation but for the life after they got saved, one of which is modesty.

Some say when one is saved, the salvation can't be nullified no matter what kind of evil acts one does by quoting 1st Corinthians 5:5, "To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." They say after getting saved by believing in Jesus, one remains in salvation with any sin in flesh. They could be viewed as people claiming 'uselessness of morality', but they should actually be viewed as people claiming dichotomy of salvation, severing flesh and spirit, that is the heresy, called Gnostics.

What I mean by saying to be lowly is only possible by faith is not to say we don't need morality but to say we are in another world, different from the moral world. Believers are the ones who are living in the world by the order of faith, not by the order of morality and ethics. Thus, although moral and ethical behaviors can be seen in believers, we should know what is seen in believers is not the same way that the world understands.

Most have fantasy with morality and ethics, believing that if people were moral and ethical, the world would be a better place to live. Yet, why it's only a fantasy is that the nature of man never gives up oneself to keep morality and ethics. Rather, our sinful nature ignores and destroys morality and ethics in order to keep ourselves. Therefore, believers ought to endeavor more and more to look at themselves and the world in the faith point of view.

In Verse 9, it says, "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."

This is a prophecy of the Messiah, saying He, the coming King, is as lowly as riding upon a foal of an ass. If I paraphrase it, keeping the literal meaning, it could be said that if the King rides on a horse, not a colt, He is a proud person, not modest.

Ever king rides on a horse. Even if one is not a king, one will ride on a horse if one is rich and powerful enough. Thus, many interpret this verse that putting oneself in the lowly position is modesty like the Messiah would ride on a foal, not a horse by disregarding his authority. This is what the world understands modesty at the level of morality and ethics.

However, even if a king rides on a horse, not a foal, as spoken earlier, we can't say the king is authoritative, immoral and proud. Likewise, we can't say the king is modest if he rides on a foal, either. This is the limit of morality. That's why I have told you many times the Bible can never be interpreted in the moral point of view.

If the Lord rode on a foal to show us His modesty, He should have just walked up to Jerusalem without any assistance. There wouldn't be any reason to ride on even a foal. Actually, it might be something controversial because it could be seen animal abuse in the modern society.

Prophet says the Messiah, who has come as the King, is just, having salvation, lowly and riding on a foal of a donkey, which means riding on a foal of a donkey is just and having salvation. How come only riding on a foal can be righteous and having salvation? Furthermore, why is it modesty?

A foal of a donkey can never be a symbol of power nor glory. Rather, it can be a symbol of weakness. Thus, His riding on a foal of a donkey shows us that the road for His work has nothing to do with power and glory that the world pursues and it is rather what the world hates and ignores. The road is where we, sinners, should walk. This is the righteousness that He showed us by riding on a fowl.

If a believer realizes that he is a mere enemy of God due to the fact that he, useless, is still pursuing his own glory and power in the world while looking at the Lord, riding on a foal of a donkey, we can say he is modesty. Then, if he comes to give thanks to God for the grace of the Lord, who received the judgement of God as the Substitute on the cross for his position, it is called salvation.

In Verse 10, it says, "And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth."

As long as there are chariots and horses, there is no peace. There will alway be battles and competition. It is the world that there are full of pursuits of their own names and glory. In such world, the Messiah's riding on a foal to enter Jerusalem is to cut off the chariot, horse and battle bow. Therefore, 'believing in Jesus Christ' is to go to the way where we have to put aside our own names and glory.

That's how the peace is possible by modesty. Being aware that one deserves to be judged by God, one is with others who long for the world, full of richness and satisfaction of the grace of the blood of Jesus Christ, which is the world of faith. Thus, the order of the world, reigned by the Lord, is the peace by lowliness and it is the order, which the church should present to the world.

In Matthew 11:28-30, it says, "Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."

Jesus came to the world to give His life a ransom for many, but all the people, to whom He would give His life, were His opponents. The fact that He gave His life to such means that He walked His life, having nothing to do with Himself. It is His meekness and lowliness that He died on the cross for the people who crucified Him.

Before His meekness and lowliness, we can see our sinful nature in ourselves trying to be acknowledged and respected by others. Thus, what we can do as ones who have come to know Him is to confess that we deserve the judgement of God as transgressors as we are. This is the lowliness of a believer in Christ.

That's why there is no one to be criticized nor to criticize in Christ. It is because all are in the relationship to appreciate the love and forgiveness of God. I hope this should be what is kept in you mind as your meditation all the time. In other words, I pray that whenever we are gathered, we won't forget that we are in the fellowship of God's love and forgiveness.

Lowliness is possible for you when you see yourself in the salvation at the cross. Only then, will you desire to participate where He walked, of which the world can't even think, in the awareness that you deserve nothing but the judgement in your sinful nature. This is the lowliness by faith!
