<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 100

Faith and Good Deeds

He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. (Proverbs 19:17 KJV)

(Sermon)

One of the virtues taught in the modern society is 'good deeds.' We often hear doing good deeds is to enhance the human value and assume one with good deeds is a better person than one without. The more one does good deeds, the more one is praised by others.

Likewise, since good deeds can improve the human value, the worlds of all religions teach and require good works. They weigh good deeds for the difference between believers and non-believers. In other words, their belief can be proven by good deeds. Christianity is not an exception in this sense.

The passage says, "He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again."

Anyone reading the verse will understand that one's having pity upon the poor and helping them is a good deed and lends it to God and God will pay one back. Yet, the understanding causes many problems.

First, having pity upon the poor or helping them doesn't belong to Christianity only but to anyone over religions. Thus, if we think God paid back only christians for christians' good works, excluding non-christians', the understanding of the verse is that God would only bless christians even if christians and non-christians did the same things. If so, the statement, 'God is on the side of Christianity', wouldn't be wrong.

In addition, the understanding is that if God were to pay back for good deeds and good deeds were to have pity upon the poor, anyone with the pitiful mind would be acknowledged by God. This is not what the Bible teaches either. Therefore, we have to be careful not to interpret the meaning of the verse recklessly.

In Proverbs 11:24-25, it says, "One man gives freely, yet gains even more; another withholds unduly, but comes to poverty. A generous man will prosper; he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed."

'A generous man will prosper' would seem that God will bless one for one's helping the poor with a pitiful mind, causing us to understand the today's verse that helping the poor with a pitiful mind is to lend God and God will surely pay back for the good deeds.

Yet, the intention of the understanding is to insinuate there are no losses but benefits of doing good deeds, thereby encouraging people to do so. This is a sin while doing good deeds because it is not of faith according to Romans 14:23.

What we need to think of first is 'who are the poor?' In socioeconomics, the poor are the people who have trouble living due to lack of money. If so, how much is lack of money? Is it lower than the minimum cost of living according to what government says every year? If it's higher, is it not lack of money? Do you think 'the poor' is defined in this meaning by the Word of God?

'The poor' in the Bible must be viewed in the relationship with God, not in the social aspects because the Bible doesn't differentiate the poor by money. Then, having pity upon the poor and helping them surely need to be understood in the Bible point of view.

No one loves poverty. Thus, if one thinks one is poor, one complains to God, assuming one should be rich for oneself. However, God doesn't exist for us. Consequently, He doesn't make us rich, either.

God is for Himself and He is the One, making us poor for Himself. The work of God is to fulfill His will by making us poor. Thus, if one wants to be rich, one thinks of God nothing but working for one.

In the Old Testament, whom God thought of the poor was the Israelites. They would have been servants of Egypt forever unless God'd had pity upon them and helped them. Yet, God brought them out of Egypt and guided them into the promised land. They were given the land for their inheritance and brought forth the fruit there. Entering the land, they were no longer the poor on the surface because they had the land and the fruit. Yet, in the relationship with God, they were still the poor because they were living daily in the grace of God.

Therefore, having pity upon the poor is only possible in the right relationship with God because one can have pity upon the poor when one is aware that one is living by God's having pity upon one. Thus, our having pity upon the poor is nothing more than our sympathy with them for their poor condition.

If we take a look at ourselves at the cross, we are all the poor because no one would be saved unless Jesus had shed His blood. Mammon, which we all wish to have, is useless for our salvation. According to Apostle Paul, it is nothing more than rubbish. Thus, we are all poor, possessing nothing, and come to enjoy life under the grace of the blood by Christ's having pity upon us.

We can learn such world of the cross through the Word of God, which means that the Word of God makes us poor. It doesn't mean it takes our richness from us to make us poor, but to open our eyes to see our reality, the poor, from the beginning. Thus, we can say that it is faith that opens our eyes to see who we really are. 'You will be rich if you believe in God' ignores the will of God and is a mere desire to live only for oneself.

Our having pity upon the poor is for us to see brethren in the mind that the Lord had pity upon us and died for us in His grace. As we can't live without His grace, having pity on us, we are to believe that brethren are under the same grace, having pity upon them as well.

In such faith, there can never be any judgement nor differentiation by what is visible. It is the true meaning of helping the poor that we share the grace and love we have received from God. It is called good deeds, which are not moral or ethical deeds, and impossible for non-believers.

Then, how does God pay back for good deeds? In Matthew 5:7, it says, "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy." It doesn't mean one must show mercy to others to receive blessings as a requirement, but it means that one, knowing one is in mercy, can show mercy to others.

God's paying one back for one's good deeds of having pity upon the poor is to continue for God to have pity upon one. It is God's paying back that God has pity on us and holds us in His hand and guides us on the path of life until the end of the world.

According to what has been said above, all believers live doing whatever they do in His already-given awards. Having pity upon the poor is also a good deed under the same condition. Thus, there is nothing believers need to be paid back, and God has nothing to pay us back either.

Imagine yourself out of Christ. And then, you will realize that you have already received everything by coming to know who Christ is. When you know you have received it by his mercy even though you don't deserve it, you will show mercy by the mercy of God. Since it is faith, we can proclaim good deeds are not works but faith!
