<설교>

Chapter 106

I Have Kept The Faith

For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.

I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith:

Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing. (2nd Timothy 4:6-8 KJV)

(Sermon)

I would like to end the subject sermon of 'Faith' with the passage, which could be called, "the Will of Paul." In Verse 6, he says, "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand." The offering he meant is a drink offering, which is to pour oil, wine, or blood.

What he meant by saying, "for I am now ready to be offered", is, we can understand, that he was seeing his life, having been poured like a drink offering, while being aware that his life came to an end.

The person, to whom Paul was leaving his will, is Timothy. He said to Timothy in Verse 5, "But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry", and "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day" in Verses 7 and 8.

Taking a look at his words, we can find what captured Paul's mind while he was facing his death. Paul was thinking about the Lord's appearing, His second coming. For Paul, it was not just a dream or wish, but a sure thing that will absolutely occur. Thus, he couldn't have thought of his life and death without the Lord's coming.

He is saying that after he has fought a good fight, finished his course, and kept the faith, what is left for him is that the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give him a crown of righteousness on the day of His coming. Thus, if the Lord were not coming, his whole life would be in vain and he would be the most miserable person. However, since it is his faith in the covenant of God that the Lord is coming again, he has only lived his life, looking forward to the day and he is leaving it as his will now.

We are also saying that we believe His second coming. We also believe what Paul says will be realized. Yet, I doubt if we are living on the way that we keep the faith.

What does he mean by saying, 'I have kept the faith'? Does he mean that he hasn't given up the gospel preaching despite all the hardships and difficulties in his life? Of course, it is related to 'I have kept the faith.' Yet, it's only a part of it; otherwise, 'I have kept the faith' would be limited to some special cases and places that Christianity is persecuted and it wouldn't be applicable to where there is no persecution like our situations.

We don't have the same situation as Paul did. We would feel more real of his words and be nervous if we had to go to jail, face the crisis of death, and saw some people die for the gospel preaching. Yet, we are not in such surroundings, making us feel dull about the understanding of it.

If it doesn't sound real for one, one probably thinks 'I have kept the faith' is to attend church in spite of persecution.

We might also understand his words, "I have a good fight", as the fight against only those who doubted his apostleship, put him in jail and impeded his gospel preaching, causing us to interpret that a good fight is to fight against heresy and other religions to some extent.

'A good fight' doesn't mean to promote Christianity nor oppose other religions, but a fight against either 'God or myself' for believers. That is, 'is God good or am I good?'

Then, many would disagree with the interpretation of 'a good fight' by saying, "of course, God is good. How come I am good?" Yet, we are living our lives in the way that we are good, not God, proven by the fact that we hear the Word of God according to what we want.

In Verses 3 and 4, it says, "For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables."

Even if the Word of God is preached, one would refuse to hear it if it doesn't match what one wants, and one would consider what one hears the Word of God if it sounds good to one's ear, proving that one considers oneself good. Such sinful nature persecutes the truth.

Thus, 'a good fight' means a fight when one finds one is not good. In other words, it's not a fight against outer sources, but the inevitable conflict, caused by the Word of God, planted in one's mind.

By such fight, one realizes that the Lord has kept and led one through the Word of God, not by one's keeping the faith by oneself. This is the Lord's victory, which is considered our victory, leading us to the glory of God.

Therefore, 'I have kept the faith' doesn't mean to have kept the Lord's day meetings with perfect attendance nor pray earnestly, but to live by faith, believing that one can't live without the Lord while one's being exposed of one's maliciousness by the Word of God. Such faith is possible due to the fact that one has come to find oneself through the good fight. Thus, we should remember that 'I have kept the faith' doesn't belong to us but Christ.

Believers are already enjoying many things. We are considered holy, living as the children of God in God's forgiveness and the covenant of glory of heaven. Yet, everything given to us has nothing to do with our labor or righteousness. All are given through Jesus Christ. Believing it is the faith.

Thus, faith is not to see ourselves but to look at the Lord, the finisher of the good work, and keeping the faith is not to think of our labor or work, but to know what the Lord has done has become our righteousness and live in thanksgiving to God.

Paul says a crown of righteousness is laid up for all who love the Lord's appearing. Those who love His appearing are the ones who know their righteousness can't save themselves. They can't help but loving the Lord in the knowledge that they can't enter the glory of heaven without Christ. Since they are called 'believers', they never think they can do something good by their own zeal.

If we truly know a crown of righteousness is given to us by the work of Christ, not by ours, we will understand what faith is. A crown of righteousness is prepared for those who believe that they can enter the kingdom of righteousness by the righteousness of Christ, not by their righteousness. Like the elders in Revelation 4:10-11, they come to confess they don't deserve to receive the glory, honor and power .

The Lord is coming again as the righteous Judge. On that day, what made us, who belong to the curse, be able to enter the kingdom of righteousness will be clearly known. Yet, we won't find it out then, but we have already come to know that by the Word of God. That's why we trust in the Lord. Living by such faith is the meaning of 'I have kept the faith'!
