<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 102

Faith and Nature

Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge;

And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness;

And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. (2nd Peter 1:4-7 KJV)

(Sermon)

The Bible begins with the covenant and ends with covenant. We should also remember that the covenant is already complete from the beginning, not incomplete to complete.

We say the coming of Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the covenant. In this sense, before He came, the covenant was not yet fulfilled. Thus, it could be said that the covenant is incomplete to complete.

Yet, it would be possible only if the fulfillment of the covenant were not sure. For example, if the completion of the covenant had been given to men as a mission, the fulfillment would have been unclear. It would rather have been impossible, actually. Only in this case, could we say the covenant would be incomplete to complete.

Yet, God is the One, who is the Maker and Finisher of the covenant. When He builds the covenant and fulfills it, there is no failure. That is, the fact that God established the covenant itself means the completion and fulfillment. Therefore, that the Bible begins with the covenant and ends with the covenant is understood that the Bible shows us the world of the covenant that God has completed. Thus, faith and greatness of men can't be testified in the Bible, but those of God.

The greatness of God is testified that He makes the men, dead by sin, the partakers of the holiness by His election because it is what only God can do by the nature of His omnipotent and grace and mercy. Furthermore, God is great that He makes the men, self-centered, look at their sin and unrighteousness and live as testimonials of His grace of forgiveness by sending the Holy Spirit.

In Verse 4 of the passage, it says, "Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust."

The divine nature is not morally excellent character but the nature of God. If so, it can never be from us at all. In other words, there is absolutely no possibility for us to change our nature to divine nature no matter what we do and how long we try to do it.

In fact, there are good natures socially accepted. Being thoughtful for others, yielding, and helping the poor are some examples of the natures and many christians would like to have them.

Of course, we need to have them. It is true that thoughtfulness is praised and welcomed by others whereas selfishness is detested. Yet, we can't say believers should be characterized by them because those can be shown by anyone regardless of faith.

In Verses 5 to 7, it says, "And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity."

We can see that some people teach the divine nature is characterized by faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness and brotherly kindness, based on the verses. There is even a place called 'Character Training School', which shows as if the divine nature were developed by human training, which is totally non-sense and the result of the misunderstanding of the passage.

What we need to think of first is, 'can our human nature be changed to the divine nature?' As mentioned earlier, it is impossible. Thus, we have to conclude that we mustn't interpret the passage we should have the divine nature.

Above all, we ought to pay attention that the latter part of Verse 4 doesn't say, 'you should be a partaker of the divine nature', but 'you may participate in the divine nature (NIV).' The phrase, 'may participate', means that God has His will in us.'

Others say the passage shows the stages of what we need to achieve time to time, saying the first is faith, so virtue is made based on faith and then knowledge, then temperance and so on.

If so, what stage do you think it's possible to achieve? Thinking that even faith is not possible for us to have on our own, there is nothing we can achieve, which means there is none that can be our nature in the divine nature.

It might be thought that if we have faith, we could practice the divine nature, but faith is not given to us to enable us to do something impossible. In other words, the purpose of faith is not to make us be in the divine nature. We should know faith rather makes us see our impossibility and believe in what Jesus Christ has done.

In Verse 4, 'exceeding great and precious promises' is written before 'you may participate in the divine nature', which means that the purpose of God's giving us the promises is to make us partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

That He gave us the promises means that the way of salvation is different from that of the world because there is no salvation in the world executed by covenant. The way of salvation in the world is done by human works. Yet, it is impossible in the world of God because all human works are evil before God.

The covenant of God comes to such sinners like us who deserve nothing but curse and judgement of God as saving grace and love. That's why faith, believing in the covenant, begins with the confession, "I don't deserve to be saved." In such faith, we may participate in the divine nature.

We think the passage is hard for us because we approach it as what we have to do. Yet, the divine nature is, as expressly written, the nature of Jesus Christ. The nature is revealed to the world by the death of Jesus Christ, who came to the world according to the will of God.

Then, what indeed is the reason we have to practice and train His nature, which we can't? Would one, who doesn't believe in Him, be able to believe in Him by training His nature? We ought to remember that the world rejected Him even though He showed His nature to the world by dying on the cross.

Training for the divine nature is nothing but to pursue to be a better person, not being grateful for whatever is given to us now, which is to pursue the corruption in the lust of the world.

One's participating in the divine nature means that one is thankful for the grace and love of Jesus Christ, who died on the cross, shedding His precious blood, to save one and believe in Him. Thus, believing in the value of His blood and thanksgiving for His grace is to be a partaker of the divine nature.

In such, one never compares nor competes with others because one knows who Jesus Christ is in faith. One never puts oneself superior to others, either. This is the evidence that one is a partaker of the divine nature. Yet, we mustn't forget that it is not by our practice nor works but natural fruit by faith.

To participate in the divine nature means to open our eyes to the world of Jesus Christ, who has saved us. Thus, it is to discard our possibility and glorify His name only. This is what the partakers of the divine nature are supposed to do, by which the nature is shone to the world!
