5.만일 우리가 그의 죽으심과 같은 모양으로 연합한 자가 되었으면 또한 그의 부활과 같은 모양으로 연합한 자도 되리라

인간은 죽기 전에는 죄로부터 해방될 수 없습니다. 노력만 하면 타인보다 좀 더 도덕적인 사람이 될 수는 있고 인격적으로도 훌륭하다는 평가를 받을 수 있습니다. 하지만 근본적으로 죄에서 완전히 해방되지는 못합니다. 이 말은 인간은 죽는 순간까지 죄에 붙들려 있고 죄가 나오는 존재라는 뜻입니다.
그런데 바울은 “하나님께 감사하리로다 너희가 본래 죄의 종이더니 너희에게 전하여 준 바 교훈의 본을 마음으로 순종하여 죄로부터 해방되어 의에게 종이 되었느니라”(롬 6:17,18)고 말합니다.
바울이 말한 죄로부터의 해방은 죽음 이후의 문제가 아니라 그리스도인으로서의 현재 실존을 말하는 것입니다. 하지만 말씀드린 것처럼 인간은 죽기 전에는 죄에서 해방될 수 없습니다. 이것이 성경과 삶의 관계에 등장하는 모순이며, 모순처럼 보이는 실상을 이해하지 못함으로 인해서 기독교 신앙의 본질이 훼손되는 결과를 초래하기도 합니다.
죄로부터의 해방을 이미 구원 받은 자로서 죄와 상관없는 존재가 된 것으로 간주하고 죄에 붙들린 삶의 모순은 무시한 채 살아가는 사람들이 있는 반면에 죄와 투쟁하면서 이기고 극복하기 위해 살아가는 사람들이 있습니다. 하지만 전자든 후자든 신앙의 본질로부터 벗어난 것은 다르지 않습니다.
그리스도인은 산 자일까요 죽은 자일까요? 이 문제에서 많은 사람들이 혼란스러워 합니다. 삶에서 드러나는 죄의 모습을 보면 죽은 자처럼 느껴지는데 성경은 그리스도로 말미암아 살았다고 선언하기 때문입니다. 그래서 자신을 산자로 인정하기에는 죄가 많다고 생각되는 반면에 그리스도를 믿음으로 산 자가 되었다는 것이 성경의 선언이기 때문에 죽은 자임과 동시에 산자라는 절충에 머물려고 하기도 합니다. 다른 말로 하면 죄인임과 동시에 의인이라는 것입니다.
하지만 우리에게 죽음과 생명이 함께 공존한다는 것은 모순에 대한 절충이며 타협이라고 생각합니다. 물론 육신은 죽지만 영은 영원히 산다는 차원에서 생각하면 죽음과 생명이 함께 공존한다는 말도 틀린 것은 아닙니다. 하지만 성경이 말하는 죽음의 육신의 소멸이 아닌 영원한 죽음을 의미한다는 것을 염두에 두어야 합니다.
인간에게 죽음은 죄에서 해방되지 못한 실존에 대한 평가입니다. 따라서 죄에서 해방되었다면 죽음에서 해방되었다는 것을 의미하는데, 앞서 말한 것처럼 문제는 그리스도를 믿는 우리의 삶에서 여전히 죄가 드러나는 것입니다.
본문을 보면 “만일 우리가 그의 죽으심과 같은 모양으로 연합한 자가 되었으면 또한 그의 부활과 같은 모양으로 연합한 자도 되리라”고 말합니다.
죽음과 생명은 예수 그리스도에게서 일어난 사건입니다. 예수님이 죽으신 것은 죄로 말미암은 것입니다. 세상의 죄가 예수님을 십자가에 못 박은 것이고 예수님은 힘으로 그 죄를 이기고자 하신 것이 아니라 죄가 이끄는 죽음의 길로 끌려간 것입니다. 하지만 부활하심으로써 죄의 권세인 죽음을 이기셨습니다. 따라서 예수님은 당연히 죽은 자가 아니라 산 자입니다.
그러면 다시 묻겠습니다. 그리스도인은 죽은 자일까요 산 자일까요? 그리스도인은 그리스도의 사람이며 그리스도께 속한 자라는 뜻입니다. 그리스도께 속했다는 것이 본문에서 말하는 연합입니다. 그리스도와 연합된 것이 신자라면 신자는 그리스도의 것을 분배 받아 누리는 관계에 있습니다. 따라서 그리스도의 죽음이 곧 신자의 죽음이고 그리스도의 부활이 신자의 부활인 것입니다. 그러므로 그리스도인은 산 자라고 하는 것이 맞습니다.
산자이기에 죄를 극복하고 의를 행한다는 뜻이 아닙니다. 비록 실존의 문제는 죄를 극복할 수 없는 것이 현실이지만 그 죄가 그리스도인을 죽음으로 끌어가지 못한다는 점에서 죄에서 해방되었다고 말합니다. 따라서 신자는 신자 됨을 현실의 삶의 문제에서 찾는 것이 아니라 그리스도와 연합된 관계에서 찾아야 합니다.
바울은 롬 6:10-11절에서 “그가 죽으심은 죄에 대하여 단번에 죽으심이요 그가 살아 계심은 하나님께 대하여 살아 계심이니 이와 같이 너희도 너희 자신을 죄에 대하여는 죽은 자요 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님께 대하여는 살아 있는 자로 여길지어다”라고 말합니다.
바울의 말처럼 스스로를 죄에 대하여는 죽은 자로 하나님에 대하여는 살아있는 자로 여긴다는 것은 쉬운 일이 아닙니다. 왜냐하면 사람은 언제나 자신의 삶에서 믿음을 확인하려는 습성이 있기 때문입니다. 하지만 확인되는 것은 죄에 대하여는 살았고 하나님에 대하여는 죽은 자 같은 모습이기에 자신의 믿음과 예수님과의 관계에 대해 확신을 갖지 못하는 것입니다.
먼저 생각해야 하는 것은 그리스도와 연합되었다는 것이 세상 사람과는 높은 수준의 인격과 성품, 그리고 삶을 요구하는 것이 아니라는 것입니다. 죄에 대해 죽은 자로 여기라는 것도 죄를 행하지 않는 자가 되어야 한다는 것을 의미하는 것이 아니고, 하나님에 대하여 살아있는 자로 여기라는 것 또한 우리가 생각하는 수준의 신앙적 삶을 실천해야 한다는 뜻이 아닙니다.
죄에 대해 죽은 자로 여기라는 것은 그리스도 예수의 죽음과 자신이 연결되어 있음을 알라는 뜻입니다. 매일같이 자기 성취를 위해 살아가는 삶에서 죄를 확인하면서 예수님의 죽음에 연결된 관계에 있지 않으면 자신이야 말로 죽은 자임을 보게 되는 것이 바울이 말하는 것처럼 날마다 죽는 것입니다.
하지만 그리스도의 부활로 말미암아 죽음의 권세에서 해방되고 생명에 속하게 되었음으로 감사하게 되면서 그리스도의 의에 붙들린 자로 사는 것이 하나님에 대해 살았다고 할 수 있습니다. 문제는 이러한 내용들이 우리에게 실제적인 경험으로 확인되거나 증거 되지 않는다는 것입니다.
사실 우리가 육신을 갖고 살아가는 이상 죄의 지배로부터 벗어날 수 없습니다. 인간은 자기 육신으로부터 자유로울 수 없기 때문입니다. 다시 말하지만 성경은 죄를 극복할 것을 요구하지 않습니다. 예수님에게서 일어난 사건을 우리에게서 일어난 사건으로 여기라는 것입니다. 이것이 가능한 것은 신자는 예수님과 연합된 관계에 있기 때문입니다.
신자가 잊지 말아야 하는 것은 예수님의 죽으심과 같은 모양으로 연합되었다는 것입니다. 예수님의 죽으심은 낮아지심을 뜻합니다. 따라서 그리스도와 연합된 신자의 방향은 예수님의 낮아지심을 따라 향해야 합니다. 그럼에도 불구하고 우리의 삶은 언제나 자기 성취를 향하여 있기 때문에 예수님의 죽으심에서 자신의 죄를 보게 되면서 자기의 죽음으로 현실화하게 되는 것입니다. 죽음을 자신의 실존으로 받아들임으로써 예수님의 피 흘리심이 죽음에서 건져 주신 은혜의 능력으로 자리하게 되는 것입니다.
그리스도와 연합된 관계에 있게 된 것은 하나님의 선택으로 이미 작정된 일입니다. 다만 이 같은 사건에 눈을 뜨게 하시고 그 사건을 나에게서 일어난 나의 일로 믿게 하시면서 감사가 있게 하시고 기쁨을 맛보게 하시는 것이 성령입니다. 성령이 계시기 때문에 신자는 자기 독단으로 사는 것이 아니라 그리스도와 연합된 관계에서 그리스도의 주도로 살아가는 것입니다.
사람의 몸이 죽는 것은 죄가 존재하며 세상이 죄의 권세 아래 있음을 보여주는 것입니다. 그런데 세상은 죽는 것을 자연의 법칙처럼 생각합니다. 인간의 몸이 영원히 살 수 없다고 생각하기 때문에 영원한 생명에 대해서도 관심 두지 않습니다.
물론 죄의 몸이 영원히 사는 것은 없습니다. 하지만 죄의 몸을 벗게 되면 부활의 신비한 몸을 입고 영원한 생명을 누리게 됨을 믿는 것이 신자입니다. 우리는 이 모든 일이 그리스도에게서 현실이 되었음을 믿는 것이고, 따라서 눈에 보이는 세상 일이 아니라 그리스도에게서 일어난 사건을 현실로 받아들이고 믿는 것입니다. 그래서 그리스도와 연합된 신자에게 확정된 참된 현실은 그리스도와 함께 죽었고 그리스도와 함께 사는 것입니다.
그리스도와 연합된 신자는 죄가 요구하는 죽음에서 해방되었습니다. 그리고 부활하신 예수 그리스도의 부활에 함께 참여되어 있습니다. 이것이 신자를 기쁘게 하고 감사하게 합니다. 따라서 신자는 자신의 삶의 모습으로 인해 불안해하거나 염려할 이유가 없습니다. 날마다 반복되는 죄로 인해서 예수님에게 연합되어 있다는 사실이 더 은혜가 될 뿐입니다.

Faith and Unity
For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection. (Romans 6:5 KJV)

No one can be free from sin before death. It could be possible that one can be evaluated better than others in morality and character by making efforts, but no one can absolutely be liberated from sin, which means that men are the ones under the influence of sin until the moment of death.
Yet, Paul says, "But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you. Being then made free from sin, ye became the servants of righteousness." (Romans 6:17-18)
What he meant by saying, 'free from sin', is not after death but present for christians. Yet, as I have already told you, no one can be free from sin before death. This is what looks like contradiction between the Bible and our reality. The misunderstanding of the seeming contradiction could damage the fundamentals of Christianity.
Some are living the life disregarding the fact that they are captured by sin because they assume they are free from sin in their salvation. Others are living the life trying not to sin and fighting against sinning. However, neither the former nor the latter are living the life according to what the Bible teaches.
Are christians alive or dead? Many are confused in this matter because while they feel like dead in sin, the Bible says they are alive in Christ. Thus, they try to compromise themselves by saying that they are dead and alive at the same time. In other words, they are simultaneously sinners and righteous ones.
Yet, being together with 'dead' and 'alive' is nothing but a conjecture and compromise for the contradiction between the Bible and reality. Of course, it could be said that 'dead' and 'alive' coexist in the statement that the flesh dies on earth and the spirit lives forever, but we should remember the death the Bible says is not fleshly death but eternal death.
Death judges men as the ones not free from sin. Thus, if one is free from sin, that means one is free from death as well, but the thing is that we, believers of Christ, still sin.
Today's passage says, "For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection."
Both death and resurrection are what happened to Jesus Christ. He died because of sin. The sin of the world crucified Him. It is not that He would overcome sin but rather He was led to death by sin. Yet, He overcame death, the power of sin, by resurrection. Therefore, Jesus is, of course, alive and not dead.
Then, let me ask you again. Are christians dead or alive? Christians are the people of Christ and the ones who belong to Christ. 'Belonging to Christ is what it means to have been planted together in the passage. If believers are the ones who have been planted together with Christ, they are in the relationship to enjoy what Christ has. Thus, the death of Christ is that of christians and the resurrection of Christ is that of theirs. In this sense, it is true that christians are alive.
It doesn't mean believers can overcome sin. Although it is reality that they can't overcome sin, it is also true that they are liberated from sin due to the fact that their sinning can't lead them to the eternal death. Thus, believers ought to find what it means to be believers in the unity with Christ, not in their reality.
Paul says in Romans 6:10-11, "For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord."
It is not easy that we reckon we are dead unto sin and alive unto God as he says because we tend to make sure our faith in our daily lives. We only see ourselves alive unto sin and dead unto God, causing us to have uncertainty of our faith and the relationship with Christ.
What we need to think of first is that 'being united with Christ' doesn't mean to require us to be different from others in the world in character and morality. 'Considering dead unto sin' doesn't mean to require us not to sin, and 'reckoning alive unto God' doesn't mean to demand us to live at what we think of prominent level of faith.
The former means, "Know that the death of Christ is linked with us." While seeing ourselves in sin, living for self-achievement on a daily basis, we reckon we are dead unto sin unless we are related to the death of Christ, which is echoed when Paul said, "I die daily."
Yet, we can say that living the life captured by the righteousness of Christ is alive unto God since we have been freed from the power of sin and come to belong to the eternal life by the resurrection of Christ. What matters is that we can't physically experience or verify these things.
It can't be denied that we are under the influence of sin as long as we are in the flesh. No one can be free from the flesh. Let me reiterate it that the Bible does not require us to overcome sin. It says to us to reckon what happened to Christ is ours, which is possible since we have been planted together with Christ.
What believers mustn't forget is that we have been united with Christ in the form of His death. His death means to be lowered. Thus, the direction of the unity with Christ ought to face toward His lowering Himself. Nevertheless, since our life is always toward self-achievement, we see our sin in the death of Christ, realizing our death in Him. By receiving our death as our reality, we come to be in the power of His grace that His shedding the precious blood has saved us from the death.
The relationship in the unity with Christ is according to God's predetermination. It is the work of the Holy Spirit that He opens our eyes to see what Christ did and makes us accept it as ours and be thankful for it and rejoice in Christ. As the Holy Spirit is dwelling in us, believers are not living on their own but by leasing of Christ in the unity with Christ.
That we die physically tells us that sin exists and the world is under the power of sin. Yet, people think death is a process of nature. Since they can't physically live forever, they aren't interested in the eternal life either.
Of course, the body in sin can't live forever. However, believers know that the mortal will put on immortality, the mysterious body of the resurrection, enjoying the eternal life. We believe all these are the reality in Christ, so we are to accept what happened to Christ, not the visible things in the world, as our reality. Therefore, the true reality for believers who have been united with Christ is to have died with Christ and to live with Christ.
Believers in the unity with Christ are free from what sin requires us, death, and participants in the resurrection of Christ, who arose among the dead. This is what makes believers rejoice and be thankful for God. Thus, there is no reason for believers to be worried and anxious about how they live. There is only the infinite grace of God left, knowing that the more we realize we are dead in sin, the more we realize we are united with Christ!
