39.너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구하거니와 이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증언하는 것이니라
40.그러나 너희가 영생을 얻기 위하여 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다

성경은 그 전체가 오직 한 분에 대해서 증거합니다. “너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구하거니와 이 성경이 곧 내게 대하여 증언하는 것이니라”(39절)라고 말씀하신 것처럼 예수 그리스도에 대해 증언하는 것입니다.
이처럼 예수 그리스도 한분에 대해 증언하는 것이 성경이기 때문에 비록 성경이 기록된 각권마다 역사적 배경과 사건과 기록된 이유가 다르다 해도, 즉 다양하다 해도 예수 그리스도라는 한 분을 향해 있다는 점에서 성경은 통일되어 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 이것을 성경의 통일성과 다양성이라 할 수 있고 통일성은 다양성을 포괄한다고도 할 수 있습니다.
이것을 말씀드리는 것은 비록 성경이 다양성을 띄고 있다 할지라도 그 이해는 다양성이 아닌 통일성으로 나타나야 하기 때문입니다. 예수 그리스도가 중심이 되어 그리스도의 십자가를 증언하는 이해가 되어야 한다는 것입니다.
이런 점에서 보면 현대 교회는 성경을 이해하는 방향에서부터 어긋나 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 예수 그리스도의 십자가가 이해의 방향이 아니라 자기 자신의 생존 문제나 교회가 이해 방향이 되어 있기 때문입니다. 그로 인해 결국 예수 그리스도의 십자가가 증언되는 것이 아니라 ‘어떻게 믿으면 복을 받을 것인가?’‘어떻게 하면 교회가 부흥할 수 있는가?’라는 인간의 관심사만 나타나게 되는 것입니다.
기독교인에게 ‘성경이 무엇입니까?’라고 질문하면 누구나 ‘하나님의 말씀입니다’라고 답할 것입니다. 그리고 하나님의 말씀을 순종해야 한다고 생각합니다. 하지만 순종의 의미가 잘못 이해되고 있기 때문에 하나님이 성경을 주심으로 의도하신 방향에서 벗어나게 되는 것입니다.
성경이 예수님에 대해 증언한다면 성경이 증언하는 바를 따라 예수님을 알아가고 성경이 증언하는 예수님을 믿는 것이 성경에 순종하는 것입니다. 하지만 대개의 기독교인들은 성경에 기록되어 있는 내용들을 문자대로 실천하는 것을 순종으로 이해합니다. 물론 목사가 그러한 순종을 요구할 것입니다. 그래서 주일 성수와 십일조, 기도, 봉사, 구제, 전도, 등등 교회의 유익과 발전에 도움이 되는 것을 하나님의 일이라는 명목으로 제시하며 실천을 강조하게 되는 것입니다.
예수님이 말씀하신 성경은 구약 성경을 말합니다. 당시 유대인들에게는 신약성경이 없었기 때문입니다. 모세오경과 선지자들의 글이 성경이었던 유대인들에게는 모세오경을 실천하는 것이 하나님의 말씀을 지키는 것이었고 그것이 하나님의 백성 된 증표였으며 영생을 얻는 것으로 믿었습니다. 즉 성경이 영생을 얻기 위한 수단이었던 것입니다.
“너희가 성경에서 영생을 얻는 줄 생각하고 성경을 연구하거니와”라고 말씀하는 것도 유대인들이 성경을 자기 구원을 위한 목적으로 연구했음을 지적하는 것입니다. 성경이 그들의 영생을 목적으로 하는 것이 아니라 하나님이 보내신 아들에 대해 증언하는 것을 목적으로 하고 있음을 알지 못한 것입니다.
예전에 이단에 대한 칼럼에서 ‘성경100독사관학교’라는 곳에 대해 다루었던 것을 기억하십니까? 성경100독사관학교라는 곳은 성경을 많이 읽어야 한다고 하면서 그 방법을 가르쳐주는 곳입니다. 일명 ‘속독법’입니다. 이들은 성경이 무엇을 말하는가에 대한 것보다 많이 읽는 것에 목적을 두고 있습니다. 많이 읽으면 자연히 성경을 깨닫게 된다는 것입니다. 하나님이 성경을 주신 이유를 무시하고 간과함으로 인해 발생하는 오류의 한 예라고 할 수 있습니다.
벧후 1:20,21절에 “먼저 알 것은 성경의 모든 예언은 사사로이 풀 것이 아니니 예언은 언제든지 사람의 뜻으로 낸 것이 아니요 오직 성령의 감동하심을 받은 사람들이 하나님께 받아 말한 것임이라”고 말씀합니다.
성경의 모든 예언은 사사로이 풀 것이 아니라는 것은, 성경을 개인의 이익과 연결하여 풀지 말라는 뜻입니다. 예언은 사람의 뜻에서 나온 것이 아니라 성령의 감동하심을 받은 사람들이 하나님께 받아 말한 것이기 때문에 하나님의 심정과 연결하여 해석되어야 하는 것입니다. 바로 그것이 그리스도로 증언되는 해석입니다.
그런데 신자가 성경을 믿는다는 것은 무슨 의미일까요? 기독교인은 누구나 ‘성경을 믿는다’고 말합니다. 하지만 성경을 믿는 것이 어떤 의미인지는 잘 모른 채 성경의 모든 내용을 사실로 받아들이면 성경을 믿는 것이라고 생각하는 것이 대부분이라고 할 수 있습니다. 가령 창세기의 말씀처럼 하나님이 세상을 창조하셨다는 것을 믿고, 홍해가 갈라지고 이스라엘 백성이 홍해를 건넌 기적이 실제로 있었던 사건으로 받아들이는 것을 성경을 믿는 것으로 생각하는 것입니다.
고전 2:6,7절을 보면 “그러나 우리가 온전한 자들 중에서는 지혜를 말하노니 이는 이 세상의 지혜가 아니요 또 이 세상에서 없어질 통치자들의 지혜도 아니요 오직 은밀한 가운데 있는 하나님의 지혜를 말하는 것으로서 곧 감추어졌던 것인데 하나님이 우리의 영광을 위하여 만세 전에 미리 정하신 것이라”고 말합니다.
사도 바울은 하나님의 지혜를 감추어졌던 비밀로 말합니다. 그리고 만약 이 지혜를 알았더라면 영광의 주를 십자가에 못 박지 아니했을 것이라고 합니다. 이것을 보면 감추어진 하나님의 지혜는 예수 그리스도임을 알 수 있습니다. 예수님이 감추어진 비밀이고 그 비밀을 세상에 나타내고 증언하기 위해 하나님의 말씀을 남기신 것입니다.
그러므로 신자가 성경을 믿는 것은 예수 그리스도의 십자가를 믿는 것이고, 그 믿음은 신자로 하여금 자신이 하나님의 지혜를 알지 못함으로 그리스도를 십자가에 못 박은 악하고 더러운 존재로 드러나게 하고 알게 하는 것입니다.
그러므로 자신이 예수님을 못 박은 죄인임을 부인한다면 그는 성경의 전체 내용을 사실로 인정하고 받아들이고, 성경의 내용을 최선을 다해 실천하다 해도 성경을 믿는 것이 아닙니다. 성경을 믿는 것이 아니라 이용하는 것이고 성경 말씀을 지키고 실천하면 복을 받을 수 있는가를 생각하는 것일 뿐입니다.
이처럼 신자가 성경을 믿는 것은 자신이 죽은 자임을 아는 것으로 나타납니다. 하나님의 비밀의 계시 앞에서 자신의 무능과 무지함을 깨닫게 되며 하나님의 은혜를 더 깊이 경험하고 하나님만 의지하게 되는 것이 믿음입니다.
눅 24장에 보면 부활하신 예수님이 제자들에게 나타나셔서 “또 이르시되 내가 너희와 함께 있을 때에 너희에게 말한 바 곧 모세의 율법과 선지자의 글과 시편에 나를 가리켜 기록된 모든 것이 이루어져야 하리라 한 말이 이것이라 하시고 이에 그들의 마음을 열어 성경을 깨닫게 하시고 또 이르시되 이같이 그리스도가 고난을 받고 제삼일에 죽은 자 가운데서 살아날 것과 또 그의 이름으로 죄 사함을 받게 하는 회개가 예루살렘에서 시작하여 모든 족속에게 전파될 것이 기록되었으니 너희는 이 모든 일의 증인이라”(눅 24:44-48)고 말씀합니다.
유대인이 성경으로 믿는 모세오경과 선지자의 글과 시편이 그리스도를 가리켜 기록되었고 기록된 모든 것이 이루어져야 하리라고 한 것처럼 예수님의 십자가의 죽음과 부활로 그 모든 말이 이루어졌음을 선포하시는 것입니다. 이 모든 깨달음이 인간의 지혜로 된 것이 아니라 예수님이 마음을 열어주심으로 된 것입니다. 그래서 신자가 성경을 믿게 된다면 그 믿음은 그리스도의 도우심을 구하는 것으로 나타나게 되는 것입니다.
즉 성경을 믿게 되면 자기의 지혜와 지식을 모두 내려놓게 되면 자신이 그리스도의 십자가를 고백하게 되는 것도 성령의 도우심의 결과이며 복음에 대해 깨닫게 되고 마음이 열리게 된 것 또한 성령의 도우심으로 받아들이는 것입니다.
그러므로 성경을 믿는 믿음에는 십자가만을 자랑하는 자랑만 있을 뿐 자기 자랑은 나타나지 않게 됩니다. 성경을 안다는 것으로 타인을 판단하지 않게 되고 그리스도를 알게 하신 하나님의 은총에 대해 감사하게 됩니다. 이것을 성경을 믿는 믿음의 의미로 이해할 수 있습니다.
성경은 하나님의 자기 계시입니다. 그리고 그리스도가 하나님이 누구신가를 보여주는 계시로 우리에게 오셨습니다. 따라서 예수님이 오심으로 계시는 종결되었습니다. 그리스도에 대해 증언하는 성경이 계시의 전부이며 계시로서 전혀 부족함이 없습니다. 그 말은 하나님이 다시 누군가에게 계시를 주실 필요가 없다는 뜻입니다. 그러므로 누구든 하나님께 계시를 받았다는 사람이 있다면 그는 하나님의 계시가 되시는 그리스도를 부인하는 것과 다를 바 없는 것입니다.
히 1:1-2절을 보면 “옛적에 선지자들을 통하여 여러 부분과 여러 모양으로 우리 조상들에게 말씀하신 하나님이 이 모든 날 마지막에는 아들을 통하여 우리에게 말씀하셨으니 이 아들을 만유의 상속자로 세우시고 또 그로 말미암아 모든 세계를 지으셨느니라”고 말씀합니다.
하나님은 모든 날 마지막에 아들을 통하여 말씀하셨습니다. 아들이 하나님이 누구신가를 말해주는 계시자이십니다. 그러므로 아들을 본 자는 하나님을 본 것이기에 신자는 성경에서 아들로 오신 예수 그리스도를 보기를 소망하고 알아가는 일에 온 마음을 두어야 하는 것입니다.
예수님은 “그러나 너희가 영생을 얻기 위하여 내게 오기를 원하지 아니하는도다”(요 5:40절)라고 말씀합니다. 영생을 위해 성경을 연구하면서도 영생이 되시는 예수님께로 가지 않습니다. 영생이 예수 그리스도를 믿음으로 된다는 것을 믿지 않고 성경을 실천함으로 된다고 생각하기 때문입니다.
우리가 성경을 믿는다면 그 믿음은 우리의 실천과 모든 행함을 내려놓게 하고 다만 의로 오신 그리스도만을 바라보게 합니다. 우리에게 어떤 행함이 있다 해도 우리 마음을 예수 그리스도의 피의 은혜에 머물게 하는 것이 믿음이며 그것이 곧 성경을 믿는 것입니다.

Faith and Bible
Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. (John 5:39-40 KJV)

The whole scriptures testify only One Person. "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me" proves that.
Since it is true that the Bible witnesses only Jesus Christ, even though each book has a different background, stories, and rationality, all scriptures are unified by the same direction toward the One Person, Jesus Christ. It can be said that the Bible is unity in diversity and the unity reigns the diversity.
The reason why I am telling you this is that although the Bible has diversity, the comprehension must be with unity. Jesus Christ-centered understanding must be preached with Christ crucified.
In this sense, modern Christianity might be going astray in the direction of the understanding because it is moving for 'visible church' or worldly blessings, not for the cross of Christ. Thus, there is hardly heard of Christ crucified, but heard, 'how can I receive blessings?', or 'how can I bring more people to make my church bigger?'
If any Christian is asked, "what is the Bible?", he or she will answer, "it is the Word of God." Besides, all Christians think they should obey it. However, due to the misconception of the obedience, they are going astray from the God's intention of giving the Bible. The obedience is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ from getting to know Him as the Bible witnesses Him. Yet, most think the obedience is to act out things written in the Bible for their practice. No doubt, preachers demand it such as attending Lord's day meetings, tithes, prayer, services, giving the poor, bringing people, and devotion, which they think are good for church development and benefits.
'Scriptures' the Lord mentioned is the Old Testament because the Jews back then didn't have the New Testament. Since Pentateuch and Prophecies were the Bible for them, they thought they were to obey those by their works and their works were their evidence of the children of God, and they believed they would receive the eternal life in so doing. In other words, the Bible was a mere method to get the everlasting life for them.
The reason why the Lord said, "Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life", was, as mentioned, to point out their misunderstanding that they were studying the Bible to get the life eternal for their sake. They didn't know the purpose of the Bible witnesses Jesus Christ, not for their salvation.
I have written a column on the topic of heretic group, 'the School of Bible Reading 100 Times', where there is to teach how to read the Bible abundantly. It is so called, 'speed reading.' They are to aim at fast reading, not the purpose of the Bible. Their theory is when reading it a lot, they can understand it. It is a fallacy by ignoring why God has given us the Bible.
In 2nd Peter 1:20-21, "Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."
'No prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation' means not to interpret the Bible for anyone's sake or benefit, including visible church. The Bible must be interpreted with the mind of God for it is written as prophets having inspired by the Holy Spirit prophesied when receiving the Word of God, not from themselves. This is how to interpret the Bible as the witness of Christ.
Then, what does believing in the Bible mean for believers? All Christians say they believe in the Bible, but not knowing what it means, they assume it is to believe in the Bible when they accept the Bible stories as true. For example, they think they believe in the Bible when they believe things such as the creation of God, crossing the Red Sea as things that have happened for real.
In 1st Corinthians 2:6-7, "Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought: But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory."
Apostle Paul says the wisdom of God as mystery. He says had the Jews known it, they wouldn't have crucified The Lord of the glory. According to Paul's words, we can know the hidden wisdom of God is Christ. The mystery is Christ, and in order to reveal the mystery to the world, God has left the Word of God.
Therefore, believing in the Bible means to believe in Christ crucified. This very faith makes us exposed as filthy ones who crucified Christ, not knowing the wisdom of God.
Thus, if anyone denies his or her crucifying Christ himself or herself, and even if he or she accepts the whole Bible as truth and obeys all, it doesn't mean he or she is the one who believes in the Bible. It is not to believe in the Bible, but use it for his or her sake and seek for blessings with mere devotion.
When a believer believes in the Bible, it is known that he or she comes to realize he or she is dead. Faith makes us aware that we are powerless and ignorant before the revelation of God's mystery, experience the grace of God and depend on God.
In the gospel according to Luke, Chapter 24, the Lord, who had arisen from the dead, said, "And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,
And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day. And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And ye are witnesses of these things." (Luke 24:44-48 KJV)
He proclaims that all the scriptures, the law of Moses, the prophets and the psalms that the Jews believed were written for Christ, who fulfilled by His death and resurrection as written. This realization is not from the wisdom of men but by Christ opening our hearts. Thus, when one comes to believe in the Bible, one is seen to ask help of Christ.
Likewise, when believing in the Bible, one puts one's all wisdom and knowledge aside, and when confessing the cross of Christ, one knows it is the intervention of the Holy Spirit. When understanding the gospel and opening the heart, one sees it is the work of the Holy Spirit.
As a result, faith, which one believes in the Bible only, boasts the cross, not oneself. The believer wouldn't judge others by their biblical knowledge and would rather give thanks to God for letting him know Christ. This is what we see the meaning of 'faith', believing in the Bible.
The Bible is God's self-revelation and it has come to us to reveal who God is. This has been completed by Christ's coming. The Bible, which only shows Christ, has all revelation of God, and there is nothing short at all! In other words, there is no need for God to tell anyone else anything else. Consequently, if there is one who claims one has received God's new revelation, one denies Christ, who is God's revelation.
In Hebrews 1:1-2, "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds."
God has spoken to us all in these last days by His Son. His Son is the revealer, who tells us who God is. Thus, as those who have seen the Son have seen God, believers must look up to Jesus Christ with a strong desire to know Him more.
Jesus said, "you will not come to me." (v40) The Jews delved into the scriptures, but they wouldn't come to Jesus because they believed their obedience of the Bible would give them the eternal life, not believing in Jesus Christ.
If we say we believe in the Bible, the faith makes us only look up to Christ, while giving up all of our works and practices. No matter what kinds of works we do, faith binds our hearts with the grace of the blood of Jesus Christ, that is to say, this is what I call 'believing in the Bible!'
