23.예수께서 돌이키시며 베드로에게 이르시되 사탄아 내 뒤로 물러 가라 너는 나를 넘어지게 하는 자로다 네가 하나님의 일을 생각하지 아니하고 도리어 사람의 일을 생각하는도다 하시고
24.이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라
25.누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라

성경의 중심에는 하나님의 언약이 흐르고 있습니다. 따라서 언약을 알지 못하거나 배제한 상태에서 바른 성경 해석은 기대할 수 없습니다. 성경 해석이 바르냐 바르지 않느냐는 것은 그리스도를 지향하는 해석인가 인간을 지향하는 해석인가로 판단할 수 있는데 언약에 중점을 두지 않으면 그리스도가 아닌 인간을 지향하는 해석으로 나아갈 수밖에 없기 때문입니다.
그것을 어떻게 확정할 수 있느냐?라고 반문할 수도 있지만 애당초 인간은 자기중심의 존재로 태어난다는 것을 염두에 둔다면 충분히 이해 할 수 있습니다. 자기중심으로 태어난 인간이 세상을 자기중심의 시각으로 보는 것은 당연하고 성경 또한 자기중심에서 이해하고 해석할 수밖에 없기 때문입니다.
단적으로 말씀드려서 자기중심의 인간이 성경을 하나님 중심으로 해석하는 것은 불가능합니다. 그래서 언약을 알지 못하거나 배제한 상태에서는 바른 성경 해석을 기대할 수 없다는 말씀을 드린 것입니다. 왜냐하면 언약은 자기중심적인 인간의 속성을 용납하지 않는 세계이기 때문입니다.
언약은 언약을 세우신 하나님께서 언약하신 대로 성취하시는 세계입니다. 하나님의 성취는 죄 용서를 말합니다. 따라서 언약에 담겨 있는 것은 하나님의 죄 용서이며 언약의 성취자로 예수님이 오셔서 십자가에 죽으시고 용서를 이루신 것입니다. 그래서 언약은 그리스도를 보내신 하나님의 긍휼과 자비의 세계로 세상에 임했고 이것이 하나님 나라의 본질이기도 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 언약의 세계는 인간의 행함이 개입하는 것을 용납하지 않습니다. 하나님의 긍휼과 자비에 감사하는 것으로 하나님의 영광이 유지되는 세계이기 때문입니다.
언약의 세계가 인간에게 요구하는 것은 상한심령으로 하나님의 긍휼에 소원을 두고 나오는 것입니다. 이것이 언약을 믿는 믿음의 세계입니다. 그래서 믿음의 세계에 있게 된 인간에게서만 나타나게 되는 것이 자기부인입니다. 자기부인이 진심으로 하나님의 언약을 믿는 증거인 것입니다.
24절에서 “이에 예수께서 제자들에게 이르시되 누구든지 나를 따라오려거든 자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 나를 따를 것이니라”고 말씀합니다.
이 말씀에 따르면 자기를 부인하지 않는 것은 예수님을 따르는 것이 아닙니다. 예수님을 따라가는 것은 앞서 가신 예수님을 보는 것입니다. 여러분은 예수님에게서 무엇을 보십니까? 죄 용서를 보기도 할 것이고, 자기 구원을 보기도 할 것이고, 하나님의 사랑을 보기도 할 것입니다. 그런데 잊지 말아야 할 사실 하나가 있습니다. 그것은 그 모든 것이 하나님께서 언약을 성취하심으로 누리게 된 은혜라는 것입니다.
따라서 죄 용서를 말할 때에도 구원을 말할 때에도 사랑을 말할 때에도 어느 것 하나 여러분의 신앙 행위나 실천과는 무관하게 하나님의 무조건적 은혜에서 시작되어야 합니다. 하나님은 자기 백성이 하나님의 은혜 안에 머물러 있기를 원하시기 때문입니다. 그래서 자기를 부인하는 것은 하나님의 은혜만을 바라본다는 의미로 이해할 수도 있습니다.
예수님을 따라가는 것은 예수님이 가신 길을 가는 것입니다. 그런데 예수님이 가신 길에 세상이 추구하는 성공과 영광이 있던가요? 예수님을 따르겠다고 하기 전에 이것부터 분명히 해야 합니다. 예수님을 따르는 것은 세상의 성공, 영광과는 무관합니다. 오히려 고난과 죽음이 있는 길입니다. 하지만 그 길이 생명이기에 예수님을 따르고자 하는 것입니다. 그래서 신자는 예수님에게서 세상의 복을 보는 것이 아니라 생명만을 보는 것입니다. 이것이 자기부인입니다.
이 말씀을 흔히 ‘자기를 부인하고 자기 십자가를 지고 예수님을 따릅시다’라고 실천적 의미로 이해하는 사람들이 많습니다. 예수님이 우리에게 자기부인이라는 실천을 요구하셨고 신자는 그 요구에 순종해야 한다고 생각하는 것입니다. 자기를 부인하는 것이 과연 인간의 실천으로 가능한 일일까요?
인간이 목표로 세우고 지향하는 것은 자기세계의 확장입니다. 이것은 인간이 선악과를 먹음으로 시작된 본질적 욕구입니다. 본질적 욕구라는 것은 인간이 자기 의지와 각오로 극복할 수 있는 문제가 아니란 것입니다. 그런데 왜 예수님은 제자들에게 자기를 부인하라는 말씀을 하시는 것일까요?
예수님의 말씀은 자기부인이라는 실천을 요구하신 것이 아니라 예수님이 제자들을 붙들고 가시는 길이 자신이 부인되지 않으면 갈 수 없는 길이고, 따라서 제자들에게 자기부인이 있게 하심으로 예수님이 가신 길을 따르게 하겠다는 예수님의 뜻을 나타내신 말씀으로 이해할 수 있습니다.
요 21:18-19절을 보면 “내가 진실로 진실로 네게 이르노니 네가 젊어서는 스스로 띠 띠고 원하는 곳으로 다녔거니와 늙어서는 네 팔을 벌리리니 남이 네게 띠 띠우고 원하지 아니하는 곳으로 데려가리라 이 말씀을 하심은 베드로가 어떠한 죽음으로 하나님께 영광을 돌릴 것을 가리키심이러라 이 말씀을 하시고 베드로에게 이르시되 나를 따르라 하시니”라고 말씀합니다.
베드로가 그리스도 때문에 죽게 될 것을 가르치는 말씀입니다. 아무리 그리스도 때문에 죽는다 하지만 죽음은 본래적 인간이 원하지 않는 길입니다. 오히려 그리스도를 위해 많은 일을 하고 업적을 이루는 것으로 자기 이름을 남기고 싶어 합니다.
하지만 예수님은 베드로가 남이 띠 띠우고 원하지 않는 길, 즉 죽음으로 끌어간다 해도 그리스도 때문에 받아들임으로 하나님께 영광 돌릴 것임을 말씀합니다. 예수님이 베드로로 하여금 그 길로 가게 하시겠다는 것입니다. 그러므로 자기부인은 나 스스로가 아닌 예수님으로 말미암아 주님의 길에 참여하게 될 신자에게 반드시 나타나게 되는 믿음의 모습인 것입니다.
예수님을 따르는 것은 예수님의 운명에 참여되는 것을 뜻합니다. 그래서 25절에서 “누구든지 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하면 잃을 것이요 누구든지 나를 위하여 제 목숨을 잃으면 찾으리라”고 말씀하신 것처럼 살고자 하는 길에서 만나는 것은 죽음뿐입니다.
예수님이 가신 길은 죽음이기에 예수님을 따르는 것은 죽음에 참여하는 것임을 알아야 합니다. 이것이 예수님을 따르는 자에게 지워진 자기 십자가입니다. 그러므로 자기 십자가를 지는 것은 예수님 앞에서 자신은 죽은 자임을 알고 예수님에게서 영원한 생명을 보며 예수님이 없이는 존재할 수 없음을 깨닫고 모든 것을 보리고 주를 따르는 것입니다. 그래서 자기 부인은 내가 원했던 모든 것을 내려놓게 되는 것으로 이해하면 될 것입니다.
다시 말씀드리지만 앞서 가신 예수님은 모든 것을 이루셨습니다. 모든 것은 여러 가지를 의미하는 것이 아니라 하나이지만 그 하나에 모든 것이 포함된 것을 뜻합니다. 그것이 생명입니다. 인간이 무엇을 해도 생명에 속했다면 모든 것을 이룬 것입니다. 낮은 위치에 있다 해도 이룬 것이고 가난하다 해도 이룬 것입니다. 그렇기 때문에 예수님을 따르는 자가 이룰 것은 없다는 사실에 주목해야 합니다. 그것이 믿음이기 때문입니다.
자신이 이루고 싶어 하는 자기 욕망을 품고 예수님을 따르게 되면 예수님에게서 십자가의 죽음이 보이지 않고 피의 용서가 보이지 않고 생명이 보이지 않고 기적을 행하신 능력만 보이기 십상입니다. 그리고 그 능력의 혜택을 입고자 하는 것이 예수님을 따르는 목적과 의미로 남게 될 것입니다. 이것이 제 목숨을 구원하고자 하는 것이고 주어지는 결과는 잃는 것임을 알아야 합니다.
자기부인을 어렵게 생각하지 마십시오. 쉽게 말하면 예수님을 따르는 믿음의 길에서 본인의 열심, 노력은 의미 없는 것으로 묻혀 지고 나의 죽음을 알게 하시고 예수님을 바라보며 죽음의 길 조차 따르고자 하는 소원이 있게 하신 하나님의 은혜만 남게 되는 것입니다.
어떤 사람은 자기 부인을 자신의 욕망과 자기 뜻 모두가 없어지는 것으로 생각하는데 사람이 욕망과 자기의 뜻이 없어질 수가 없습니다. 자기부인은 자신을 부인하게 하는 것이 목적이 아니라 자기가 부인됨으로써 하나님의 긍휼과 자비의 일하심이 드러나고 증거 되는 것에 의미가 있습니다. 이것을 위해 자기부인이 있게 하시고 예수님을 따르게 하시는 것입니다.
고전 15:10절을 보면 “그러나 내가 나 된 것은 하나님의 은혜로 된 것이니 내게 주신 그의 은혜가 헛되지 아니하여 내가 모든 사도보다 더 많이 수고하였으나 내가 한 것이 아니요 오직 나와 함께 하신 하나님의 은혜로라”고 말씀합니다.
바울의 고백에서 드러난 것은 하나님의 은혜일뿐이지 바울 자신은 철저하게 감추어져 있습니다. 겸손을 위해 입술에만 감추어져 있는 것이 아니라 하나님의 은혜 앞에 감히 설 수 없는 것이 자신임을 알았기 때문에 모든 사도보다 더 많은 수고를 하였다 하면서도 자신이 한 것이 아니라고 고백하게 되는 것입니다. 이처럼 자기부인의 세계에는 자기의 수고로 이룬 것이 없기 때문에 상급의 차등이라는 말이 존재할 수 없고, 봉사의 여부로 믿음이 차별되는 것도 없습니다. 그것을 그리스도의 몸이며, 그리스도가 머리 되신 교회라고 일컫습니다.
믿음은 인간의 열심에 의한 봉사와 헌신으로 채워진 세계가 아닙니다. 그것은 믿음을 자기 멋대로 곡해한 것에 지나지 않습니다. 교회가 그처럼 잘못된 곡해된 믿음에서 벗어나지 않는다면 인간의 종교 단체로서의 교회일 뿐 그리스도의 몸 된 교회는 아닙니다.
그리스도의 몸 된 교회는 그리스도께서 베푸시고 남기신 것, 은혜로 인해 다스림 받으며 은혜의 은혜 됨을 증거 하는 길에 있습니다. 때문에 인간의 수고에 의한 것은 단 하나도 나올 수가 없습니다. 우리는 하나님의 열심에 의해 믿음의 길을 가게 됩니다. 이것을 앞에 가신 주를 보며 확인하시고 여러분이 가는 길에 하나님의 은혜와 열심만 남는 자기부인이 있기 바랍니다.
Chapter 60
Faith and Self-Denial
But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men.
Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it. (Matthew 16:23-25 KJV)

There is the covenant of God, flowing In the center of the Bible, so there is no right interpretation without knowing the covenant nor excluding it. Whether the interpretation of the Bible is correct or not depends on either for Christ or for human, but if we don't keep in mind with the covenant, we can't help interpreting only 'for human', not 'for Christ.'
Although some may argue, "how come you can ever say that?", if we think of the fact that men are born with self-centered mind, we can easily understand it. It is no wonder men born with self-centered mind view the world in that manner and it is also no doubt men read and understand the Bible in the same way.
In a nut shell, it is absolutely impossible for self-centered human to interpret the Bible in God's center. That's why I have told you we can't expect any correct interpretation excluding the covenant because the covenant is the world that never allows self-centered human characteristics.
The covenant is the world that God, who set up the covenant, fulfills it. The fulfillment of God means forgiveness of sin. Therefore, what is in the covenant is God's forgiveness of sin and the fact that Jesus, who is the fulfiller of the covenant, has come, died on the cross and forgiven the sin. The covenant has come as the world of God's compassion and mercy by sending His Son, and this is the essence of the covenant. Thus, the world of covenant never allows any men's work involved. It is the world that can be sustained by thanksgiving for God's compassion and mercy.
What the world of covenant requires is to come to God with the contrite heart for the compassion of God. This is the world of faith, believing in the covenant. Consequently, self-denial is only from the ones who have come to be in the world of faith. Self-denial is the proof of believing in the covenant of God.
In Verse 24, it says, "If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me."
According to this verse, not denying himself is not following Jesus. Following Jesus is looking to Jesus ahead. What are you seeing from Jesus? It may be forgiveness of sin, your salvation or the love of God. Yet, there is one thing you mustn't forget, that is, all of them are the grace of God by fulfilling His covenant.
Thus, whatever you talk about, such as forgiveness of sin, salvation, or the love of God, it must begin with the unconditional grace regardless of your works or practices because God wants His people to stay in His grace. In this sense, self-denial is understood in the meaning of looking up to God's grace only.
Following Jesus is walking in His path. Then, is there any quest of the worldly success in His path? Before we say we would follow Him, we have got to make sure for that first. Following Him has nothing to do with the worldly success nor glory at all. There are rather agony and death. Yet, we would follow Him because the path is 'life.' Therefore, believers see only life from the Lord, not blessings of the world. This is called self-denial.
Many understand this verse as a thing to practice, saying, 'let us deny ourselves and follow Jesus.' They think Jesus requires to deny themselves, so they think they have to obey it. If so, is self-denial possible for us to obey?
What men want is to expand their own arena. This mind has been men's innate desire since Adam. The innate desire means this is something we can't overcome. Then, why does Jesus tell us to deny ourselves?
It can be comprehended that He is not requiring us the act of denial, but telling us the path of the Lord, where His disciples can never walk without being captured by the Lord. He is showing His intent to make us deny ourselves because that is the only way to walk His path.
In John 21:18-19, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdest thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not.
This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me."
These verses teach us Peter would die due to Christ. No matter how glorious it is to die for Christ, death is what men never want. Men would rather glorify themselves by what they have done for Christ.
However, the Lord said Peter would glorify God by receiving his life due to Christ in spite of the fact that he would walk, girded by others, that is, death. It means Christ would enable him to walk on the path. As a result, self-denial is what faith shows in the life of believers, produced by the Lord, not by themselves.
Following Jesus means to be in His destiny. That's why Verse 25 says, "For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it." What we meet on the way of saving our life is losing it.
We should remember that following Him is to participate death because it is the path of the Lord. This is the cross, given to believers, who are following Jesus. Therefore, taking up the cross has the meaning that we are aware that we are dead before Him, look to His eternal life, realizing we can't exist without Him, abandon all and follow Him. Self-denial can be seen in the meaning that we abandon all we thought were valuable.
Once again, the Lord, who walked ahead, accomplished everything. Here, 'everything' doesn't mean many things. It is 'one', but includes everything, that is, 'life.' No matter what we do, if we belong to His life, it is everything. Even though we are poor or socially low, we are in everything. Thus, we have to pay attention there is nothing for believers, who are following Jesus, to accomplish more because that is what faith means to be!
If one follows Jesus with one's innate desire, one can't see the death of Jesus on the cross, forgiveness of sin through His blood, nor His life, but can only see the miracles He performed, causing one to follow Him to get blessings and benefits. That is to save one's life, which is to lose it.
Don't think self-denial is difficult! Easy way to speak, it is the grace of God, which reveals all our efforts and devotions as rubbishes and meaningless ones, opens our eyes to see our sinful nature(death), enables us to look up to Jesus, and gives us the desire to walk on the path whether there is death required!
Some think self-denial is to remove their will and desire, but nobody can. The purpose of self-denial is not to deny oneself, but to witness and present the compassion and mercy of God by being denied. For this reason, the Holy Spirit is working in us to produce self-denial and make us follow Jesus.
In 1st Corinthians 15:10, it says, "But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me."
What is revealed through his confession is only the grace of God and thoroughly nullifies Paul himself. It is not to make himself sound humble but to profess that he did nothing even though he had labored more than any other Apostles because he came to know he can't even stand before the grace of God. Likewise, the world of self-denial doesn't mention anything about different rewards nor discrimination of faith because there is nothing we have done. We call this world, 'ecclesia', the Body, whose head is Christ.
Faith is not the world built with human devotions and efforts. That kind of understanding is merely from a man-made idea. A body edified by that kind of faith is just a religious group and can never be called 'ecclesia', the Body of Christ.
'Ecclesia', the Body of Christ, is on the way where the grace of God governs us while we are witnessing the grace of God. There is nothing from us! We simply walk on the path of faith by God's endeavor. I hope you can see it through the Lord, who has already walked before us, and I pray that there is nothing left but only self-denial by God's grace and endeavor!
