<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 64

Faith and Devotion

And when Moses saw that the people were naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto their shame among their enemies:)

Then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said, Who is on the LORD's side? let him come unto me. And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together unto him.

And he said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.

And the children of Levi did according to the word of Moses: and there fell of the people that day about three thousand men.

For Moses had said, Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day. (Exodus 32:25-29 KJV)

(Sermon)

In the early Christianity, there was one of the heretic groups, called 'Marcionites.' Like Gnosticism, they divided spirit and flesh in dualism, claiming spirit is good and flesh is evil. They were radically antisemitism, denying the Old Testament. As they refused it, they didn't acknowledge God in the Old Testament. Although they admitted there was God, they differentiated God in the New Testament.

They described God in the Old Testament as One who loved wars and blood, and are capricious, revengeful, dogmatic, willful, and dictatorial. In other words, God was a creator of evil and dictator who only acknowledged Israel as His people in love and destroyed the others. They claimed that He even killed His own people in whim and vengeance when they committed sin.

I don't think it is too wrong if we take a look at the Old Testament only. He was grieved and decided to destroy all creatures from the earth after having created the universe. God seemed whimsical and merciless.

This kind of thoughts has given enough reasons to non-believers who oppose Christianity and deny the existence of God. They even attack the principle of love in Christianity while presenting God who failed the creation and is inferior.

In this aspect, today's passage makes us confounded as well. It is because Moses slew three thousand Israelites by setting the Levites at the head. Since this kind of stories are recorded in the Bible, many christians are having a trouble understanding them.

We believe God in the Old Testament is the One who is full of love, grace, and mercy. Then, how can we understand Moses, saying, "Consecrate yourselves today to the LORD, even every man upon his son, and upon his brother; that he may bestow upon you a blessing this day" after having slain three thousand of his brothers?

The passage is told based on Israel's idolatry, worshiping the golden calf. After God had called Moses up to Mount Sinai to bestow the law, the Israelites who were waiting for Moses, who had led them out of Egypt, began to be agitated by the fact that he was delayed on coming back to them.

In Exodus 32:1, it says, "And when the people saw that Moses delayed to come down out of the mount, the people gathered themselves together unto Aaron, and said unto him, Up, make us gods, which shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him." With uncertain future anxiety, they requested Aaron to make gods to lead them.

Aaron accepted their request, asked them to bring golden earrings and made a golden calf. He must have thought their request was reasonable. He might have agreed with the people in anxiety because he would have to lead them alone without Moses.

Aaron, who made the golden calf, said, "These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt", offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play. As Moses came nigh the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, his anger burned and he threw the tablets out of his hands, breaking them to pieces at the foot of the mountain. And he took the calf they made and burned it in the fire; then, he ground it to powder, scattered it on the water and made the Israelites drink it.

And he said, "Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Put every man his sword by his side, and go in and out from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor", causing the slaughter of three thousand.

What makes us more confounded is why Moses says what the Levites did is consecration. Then, does it mean we have to slay our brothers and friends if they idolize in oder to devote ourselves? For sure, no one would think so. Even if one were to interpret that way, one wouldn't practice it.

Then, how should we approach the passage? Most christians understand the meaning of devotion as serving God with all they have. They think devotion is a proof of faith by saying, "true faith makes them devoted."

"True faith makes us devoted" is nothing wrong because faith without devotion is no more than an ideology. The Verse in James 2:26, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also", can vouch for that.

Yet, the important thing is that we ought to know what the Bible teaches devotion. As spoken earlier, if we understand devotion as serving God with all we have, 'faith makes us devoted' is proven wrong because faith doesn't direct us that way.

The fact that Moses by setting the Levites at the head slew three thousand can be understood that people of God is the ones focusing only on the will of God without concession and compromise. In other words, this is not the slaughter for oneself, but to reveal God is who God is. This is what Moses meant consecration.

In this sense, we can find our common understanding of devotion is wrong because it is for ourselves. No one can deny that by setting our fervent heart and offerings to serve God to please Him at the head, we expect to receive rewards, so called blessings. In any way, there is always ourselves in the center of our devotion.

An idol is a god made by men for themselves. What Israelites requested Aaron was also a god that would lead them. They would possess a god for themselves. The will of God that He brought them out of Egypt was out of their interest. What they wanted was just to get out of anxiety by having their own god, which is not far from the reason why religious people today come to God.

God is working for His own glory in His name. However, people look for God in their names. God never acknowledges them as His people. Thus, the way of revealing who God is was to slay the people who made the golden calf and Moses called this consecration.

In Matthew 10:35-36, the Lord says, "For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. And a man's foes shall be they of his own household."

We don't want to be in quarrel with our families and bring enmity for faith. We rather think christians should make our families in peace. Yet, Jesus breaks the family relationships because no one can enter heaven with the relationship of affectionate families nor is this a proof of faith either.

What the Lord meant was not to be in quarrel with family, but to look at Himself, who will bring new relationships of families: brothers, sisters and mothers. He showed this truth by saying, "For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother." (Matthew 10:50)

The will of God is to believe in Jesus Christ, whom God sent. Faith is to know living for oneself is idolizing, and to believe in Jesus Christ for the name of God. To live with faith is what is called, 'devotion' to God.

That Israelites made their god and worshiped for themselves was to despise God, resulting in perishing. This is shown by the slaughter of three thousand. Coming to God for oneself is a sin God never accepts.

In this very sense, we are nothing but to be destroyed because we are captured by a desire that would live for ourselves. For such people , to whip ourselves before the Word of God is to consecrate ourselves to God because we testify God's holiness by realizing we deserve God's judgement.

Therefore, devotion has nothing to do with our efforts, passion or possession. The very faith makes us open our eyes to see we are dead in sin, living for ourselves, and look up to Christ, who came to give the eternal life. That's why believers, reigned by faith, can never boast themselves. They just know everything is given through the grace of God. This is the life of people who belong to the Lord and this is called devotion. Knowing this devotion is not from themselves but from faith, the gift of God, they can't dare to say they devote themselves.

Believers are the ones who desire the world of faith, which people live and die for the Lord in the world that people live for themselves. Believers feel like having more needs of the world of faith in their reality that they can't be out of themselves. Then, we come to consecrate ourselves to God!
