<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 67

Faith and Godliness

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world. (James 1:26-27 KJV)

(Sermon)

It is undeniable that there are changes in believers' lives as they are in the Word of God because they are changed by the leading of the Word of God unless it is head-knowledge. However, we must notice the changes are not outward matters. Of course, the changes can be seen, but what we see is not the essence of the changes.

There was a movement called 'Pietism' in the history of Christianity. It began in Germany in 17th century. It focused on 'liveliness', that is, practical faith. They often quoted 'faith without works is dead' from the Book of James. They taught people that practices make people godly.

'Pietism' was based on the Reformation. In the Middle Age, as Roman Catholic was corrupted, Martin Luther began to reform it. He emphasized on 'Only Faith', 'Only Bible', and 'Only Grace.' It was called 'reformed theology.' Then, there were people who were dissatisfied with it because they thought there was no enthusiasm in their godly lives, resulting in 'Pietism.'

It can be said that 'Pietism' began with an intent to make up the lukewarmness of the Reformation. This is the pitfall of 'Pietism.' It fell into the pitfall of self-complacency with enthusiastic practices. All religions have the similarity called 'self-satisfaction.' Yet, faith never pursues such.

Then, what is it that the Bible teaches on godliness? James says, "If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world."

What he says may seem different from what you think it is because there is no outward look.

Most christians link godliness with religious practices such as reading the Bible and praying on a regular basis. Or, it may be to keep Lord's day properly and not to enjoy carnal things.

But, James tells us godliness is to care for orphans and widows in their difficulties and keep oneself unspotted from the world. He says this is undefiled before God.

There is religion in vain, he says contrastingly, that is, no watch out for what to say and deception of oneself. Thus, if one doesn't bridle one's tongue and deceives oneself even if there are practices of religion, the godliness is revealed in nothing.

Then, what does he mean by religion in vain, that is, 'not bridle one's tongue and deceive oneself'? Some may understand 'not bridle one's tongue' means talkativeness. Of course, if one is too talkative, one may look frivolous and not serious. But, it is a subjective matter and has nothing to do with the Bible.

In James 1:19, it says, "Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath."

What we are swift to hear is the Word of God. When we are swift to hear the Word of God first, we may not come to consider ourselves godly or boast our religious practices because we truly see who we are. Furthermore, we will know we don't deserve to claim ourselves in anger at all before the Word of God. Therefore, Godliness is, most of all, to hear the Word. Then, believers bridle their mouth with the Word.

In other words, 'I am religious', 'my faith is strong', 'I understand the gospel', or 'I got saved' shows one doesn't bridle one's tongue and a proof one doesn't hear the Word. It is religion in vain. If one says, "I long for heaven" or "I pursue the cross of Christ" while seeking for fame and position among people, one deceives oneself. It is all in vain.

I have already told you godliness has nothing to do with our practices. Apostle James says godliness is to care for orphans and widows in their afflictions and to keep oneself unspotted from the world. If we understand caring for orphans and widows as helping the needy, the practice of helping might be seen godliness. And, if keeping ourselves clean from the world is understood distance from the worldly cultures, godliness can be a practice matter. The question on that understanding is how much we can practice. This kind of practices exist in other religions as well and even better.

What Verse 27 implies in the meaning is that godliness is impossible in human practices by saying "Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father." It is because there is none undefiled and pure from us. Thus, if there is something undefiled and pure, it must be from God. Then, we can learn caring for the fatherless and widows in their affliction is not just helping them out.

In Deuteronomy 16:11-12, "And thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the LORD thy God hath chosen to place his name there. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt: and thou shalt observe and do these statutes."

The verses are of the feast of weeks: rejoicing before God with strangers, orphans, and widows. It may apparently seem they shouldn't ignore the weak at the feast, but the meaning of the verses is to remember the time of Egypt when they were slaves.

Servants, strangers, orphans, and widows are all what they were in Egypt. They were so weak that someone had to help them in Egypt. God is telling them to remember the time of Egypt through showing them those people. This was the will of God that they ought to remember what they were at the beginning.

Therefore, when the children of Israel helped the fatherless and widows, it means they were to see themselves, realizing they were so poor that they couldn't survive without God's help. This is pure religion and undefiled before God. Viewing ourselves pitiful can't be from us because it is a phenomenon only standing before God.

All men are pitiful because we are under the curse with no hope unless God shows us His mercy. Consequently, godliness pure and undefiled is to look at oneself poor and ask mercy of God.

Pitifulness of men is not a matter of the past but ongoing reality. Our death vouches for it. When believers think of themselves at the level, caring for the weak is naturally shown.

The reason James talks about keeping oneself unspotted from the world with caring for the weak is that it is not from the worldly cultures but the worldly point of view. We are not pitiful from the worldly perspective. But, in the Word of God, we can see ourselves so poor that we are not swift to hear the Word, captured by the world, not looking up to heaven. Viewing ourselves like this is to keep ourselves unspotted from the world.

Being unspotted from the world means to acknowledge oneself as the weak, pitiful. As a result, trying to show others their biblical practices is defiled and impure. For instance, preachers may easily be caught by forming godliness.

In 2nd Timothy 3:5, it says, "Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away."

Pharisees are a good example of people who form godliness but deny the power. They had a form of godliness surely. Yet, they didn't know they had sinful nature nor admit it. This is to deny the power of godliness. "Turn away from them" means "there is no power of salvation even if there is the best form of godliness."

The Word of God brings us to the knowledge that we are the weak and the world of God's mercy and grace. It makes us ask God for His mercy and grace, very needs for the pitiful like us, not boastful in the world. This is what is called 'believers' true godliness.'
