신자에게 믿음으로 인한 기쁨은 무엇일까요? 기독교인이라면 누구나 믿음의 기쁨을 누리고 싶어 합니다. 왜냐하면 기쁨의 상태가 곧 평안과 행복으로 이어진다고 기대하기 때문입니다. 그래서 믿음의 기쁨을 누리지 못한다고 생각되면 고민하면서 기쁨을 누릴 수 있는 곳을 찾아 헤매기도 하는 것입니다. 하지만 대개의 기독교인이 생각하는 믿음의 기쁨에는 오해되는 것이 있습니다. 그것은 기쁨을 감정적인 것으로 이해하는 것입니다.
대개 보면 믿음의 기쁨을 자신의 구원과 축복, 그리고 행함의 실천에서 오는 보람에서 찾는 경향이 많습니다. 그것이 감정적인 느낌입니다. 하지만 그것을 믿음의 기쁨이라고 할 수 없습니다. 왜냐하면 말씀드린 것처럼 믿음의 기쁨은 일시적으로 느끼는 감정이 아니기 때문입니다.
사람은 자신을 기쁘게 하는 일에 마음이 끌리기 마련입니다. 그렇다면 성경이 여러분을 기쁘게 하는지 생각해 보십시오. 성경에 마음이 끌립니까? 성경에 마음이 끌린다면 아마 시간을 쪼개서라도 성경을 읽으려고 할 것입니다.
이처럼 성경이 마음에 끌리고 성경을 읽는 것이 기쁨이 된다면 그것은 감정적인 것이 아닙니다. 감정이 우리를 말씀으로 끌어가는 것이 아니라 말씀이 우리를 이끌고 있기 때문입니다. 이것은 감정의 문제가 아니라 영혼의 문제입니다. 소설책을 읽거나 드라마를 보면서 느끼는 재미나 기쁨이 아니라 성경으로 인해 세상에서 알 수 없는 하나님의 세계를 보게 되는 기쁨의 경험인 것입니다.
24절에 보면 “우리가 너희 믿음을 주관하려는 것이 아니요 오직 너희 기쁨을 돕는 자가 되려 함이니 이는 너희가 믿음에 섰음이라”고 말합니다.
바울이 말하는 고린도 교회의 기쁨은 무엇이고, 바울은 또 무엇으로 그들의 기쁨을 돕는다고 말하는 것일까요? 바울이 고린도 교회에 두 번째로 서신을 보낸 것은 교회의 회개를 위해서였습니다. 당시 고린도 교회는 우상 숭배가 만연하였고 거짓 교사들로 인해 바울이 전한 복음이 흔들리고 위태로운 지경에까지 이르렀습니다. 또한 거짓 교사들은 바울이 전한 복음을 훼방하기 위해 교회로 하여금 바울의 사도직에 대해서까지 의심 하도록 선동하였습니다. 그래서 바울이 고린도 교회를 방문했을 때는 비난과 함께 의심을 받고 돌아서야 했던 것입니다.
바울은 세 번째 고린도 교회를 방문하기 전에 회개를 촉구하는 서신을 보냅니다. 그리고 23절에서 자신이 다시 고린도에 가지 아니한 것은 그들을 아끼려 함이라고 말합니다. 바울이 고린도에 가지 아니한 것이 그들을 아끼기 위해서라는 것은 바울이 가게 되면 우상을 섬기에 거짓 교훈에 빠져 교회에 분란을 일으킨 사람에 대해 책망하지 않을 수 없기 때문입니다. 그렇게 되면 그것은 교회의 아픔이 될 것입니다. 때문에 바울은 고린도에 가지 않고 서신을 보내 회개를 촉구하는 것입니다. 그리고 그것을 교회의 기쁨을 돕는 것으로 표현합니다.
고후 2:1-3절에 보면 “내가 다시는 너희에게 근심 중에 나아가지 아니하기로 스스로 결심하였노니 내가 너희를 근심하게 한다면 내가 근심하게 한 자밖에 나를 기쁘게 할 자가 누구냐 내가 이같이 쓴 것은 내가 갈 때에 마땅히 나를 기쁘게 할 자로부터 도리어 근심을 얻을까 염려함이요 또 너희 모두에 대한 나의 기쁨이 너희 모두의 기쁨인 줄 확신함이로라”고 말합니다.
바울은 자신을 기쁘게 할 자를 고린도 교회로 말합니다. 그런데 바울이 고린도에 가서 복음에서 벗어난 자들을 치리한다면 교회를 근심하게 하는 결과가 되고 그것은 자신을 기쁘게 할 사람을 도리어 아프게 하는 것으로 본 것입니다. 그래서 자신을 기쁘게 할 교회로부터 슬픔을 얻지 않기 위해 서신을 보낸다는 것입니다. 바울의 서신을 보고 회개를 하면 사도가 갔을 때 그들을 아프게 할 일이 없고 함께 기뻐할 수 있다는 것입니다. 이것을 생각하면 바울을 기쁘게 하는 것은 교회의 회개입니다. 이유가 무엇일까요?
눅 15:7절에 보면 “내가 너희에게 이르노니 이와 같이 죄인 한 사람이 회개하면 하늘에서는 회개할 것 없는 의인 아흔아홉으로 말미암아 기뻐하는 것보다 더하리라”고 말합니다.
하나님의 기쁨은 회개할 것이 없는 의인 아흔아홉에 있는 것이 아니라 죄인 한 사람의 회개에 있습니다. 회개할 것이 없는 의인 아흔 아홉은 쉽게 말해서 교회 생활에 철저한 사람들입니다. 그러면 목사에게 기쁨이 되는 사람은 당연히 죄인 한 사람의 회개가 아니라 의인 아흔 아홉의 열심입니다. 이것은 어느 목사도 부인하지 않을 것입니다. 교회에 유익이 되는 것은 죄인 한 사람의 회개가 아니라 의인 아흔 아홉의 열심 있는 신앙이기 때문입니다.
하지만 하나님께는 죄인 한 사람의 회개만이 기쁨이 된다는 사실을 주지해야 합니다. 이유가 무엇일까요? 회개는 자신의 죄를 보게 되면서 구원의 가능성이 오직 주께만 있음을 깨닫고 주만 바라보게 되는 것을 말합니다. 이러한 회개는 사람의 뜻과 의지로는 안됩니다. 본래 사람은 자신의 행함을 모아 그것을 의로 삼고 하나님께 나아가려고 하는 존재이기 때문입니다. 이것이 회개할 것이 없는 의인에 해당되는 것입니다.
회개는 하나님이 사랑하기로 작정하신 자기 백성을 찾으셨음을 의미합니다. 이것이 죄인 한 사람의 회개가 하나님께 기쁨이 되는 이유입니다. 바울의 기쁨은 죄인 한 사람의 회개로 기뻐하시는 하나님의 기쁨에서 사랑으로 일하시는 하나님의 기쁨을 알게 된 기쁨이라고 할 수 있습니다. 이처럼 바울의 기쁨은 하나님이 기뻐하시는 것으로 인한 기쁨인 것입니다.
이것이 바울의 기쁨인 것을 생각해 보면 기쁨은 감정적인 것이 아님은 물론이고 세상에서 누리게 되고 소유하게 된 것과도 무관합니다. 바울은 회개에서 사랑으로 자기 백성을 찾으시는 하나님을 바라봅니다.
자신의 죄로 인해 회개하게 되는 신자 역시 모든 죄와 허물을 용서하시는 하나님의 사랑을 생각하지 않을 수 없습니다. 그러므로 회개하는 신자 또한 하나님의 기쁨에 참여하게 되는 것입니다. 이런 이유로 바울은 자신이 고린도에 가지 않고 회개를 촉구하는 서신을 보낸 것을 그들을 아끼고 그들의 기쁨을 돕는 것으로 말하는 것입니다.
신자에게 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 알아가는 것보다 큰 기쁨은 없다 할 수 있습니다. 우리를 이러한 기쁨으로 끌어가는 것이 하나님의 말씀입니다. 말씀에서 자신의 죄를 보게 되고 그 죄를 용서하신 사랑과 은혜에 깊이 끌려 들어가는 영혼의 기쁨을 알게 되는 것입니다. 때문에 신자의 기쁨은 환경의 좋고 나쁨을 초월하여 경험되는 것입니다. 오직 믿음으로만 가능한 기쁨이기 때문에 “너희가 믿음에 섰음이라”고 말합니다.
신자에게 말씀이 현실로 다가온다면 천국은 실제가 됩니다. 그렇다면 그 천국이 신자로 하여금 기뻐하게 하고 감사하게 할 것입니다. 믿음이 우리를 이 길로 끌어갑니다. 그러므로 기뻐하려고 할 이유가 없고 기뻐하라고 다그칠 이유도 없습니다. 하나님께서 자기 백성을 항상 기뻐하도록 만들어 갈 것이기 때문입니다. 이것이 우리에게 함께 하시는 하나님이 행하시는 일입니다.
때문에 여러분이 주지해야 할 사실은 하나님은 우리의 기쁨을 위해 일하지 않으신다는 것입니다. 많은 기독교인이 이 점을 생각하지 못합니다. 하나님은 하나님의 기쁨을 위해 일하십니다. 그리고 신자의 기쁨은 하나님의 기쁨에 참여되는 것입니다.
만약 하나님이 우리의 기쁨을 위해 일하신다면 그 기쁨은 일관적일 수가 없습니다. 나에게는 기쁨이 되는 일이 누군가에게는 고통이 되는 경우가 허다하기 때문입니다. 가령 내가 회사에서 승진한 것으로 인해 기뻐한다면 나로 인해 승진하지 못한 누군가는 실망할 것입니다. 이것이 세상의 현실입니다. 이러한 현실에서 모든 신자를 기쁘게 하는 것은 불가능하다는 것을 짐작하고도 남습니다.
그러므로 신자의 기쁨은 하나님의 기쁨으로 통일 되어야 합니다. 하나님의 기쁨에 관심을 둠으로 하나님의 사랑과 은혜를 알아가게 된 그것이 하나님이 주시는 최고의 복임을 알게 될 때 그는 소유가 없는 가운데서도 하나님으로 인해 기뻐하게 되는 것입니다. 이것이 믿음의 기쁨입니다.
여러분이 구원 받고 축복 받는 그 관심을 내려놓을 수 있어야 합니다. 그리고 하나님의 사랑이 확증된 현장인 십자가에서 그리스도를 보셔야 합니다. 예수 그리스도가 어떤 은혜로 여러분께 함께 하시고 일하시고 도우시는 가를 알아가며 그 은혜가 좋다고 생각되는 그것이 기쁨입니다. 이 기쁨은 불안과 염려와 두려움의 환경에서도 사그라지지 않고 강한 힘을 발휘합니다. 그래서 항상 기뻐하게 됩니다.
신자가 천국을 바라보게 된다면 세상의 것은 시시하게 다가오게 됩니다. 따라서 세상의 것으로 기뻐하고 즐거워 하고자 하는 것 또한 시시한 생각으로 여기게 됩니다. 기쁨의 근거는 세상에 있지 않고 하나님께 있습니다. 하나님이 행하시는 모든 일이 기쁨의 근거로 자리하는 것입니다. 그래서 신자는 모든 현실에서 여호와로 말미암아 기뻐하게 됩니다. 하나님이 행하시는 구원이 예수 그리스도의 십자가로 말미암아 우리의 삶에 현실로 나타나게 된 그것으로 인해 기뻐하게 되는 것입니다.

Joy of Faith
Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.
Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.(2 Corinthians 1:23-24 KJV)

What is joy by faith for believers? All Christians without exception would have joy of faith in our lives because we think being joyful is led to comfortable and happy life, so we try to find a place to receive joy if we don't think we are experiencing it. However, most Christians misunderstand what joy of faith means in the Bible. We think joy is somewhat related to our emotions and feelings.
People tend to find joy of faith from their salvation, blessings and rewards of their good deeds. These are all emotional experiences, but cannot be called joy of faith in the Bible because joy of faith is not a temporary emotion.
We are inclined to anything that makes us feel happy. Then, think of whether the Bible makes us feel happy. Is your heart inclined to the Bible? If so, you would read the Bible at any spare time you can find in your life.
If you are attracted to reading the Bible with joy, joy is not an emotional matter because the emotion is not pulling you to joy but the Word of God is! This joy is not a matter of feelings but that of spiritual work! Reading the Bible is not a kind of fun such as reading novels or watching TV dramas. It is an experience of joy of God's world that cannot be found in this world.
In Verse 24, it says, "Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand."
What is the joy Paul says here and what does he say helps their joy? The purpose of the second letter to the Corinthians was to repent. There were a full of idolatry and false teachers, causing the gospel faltered and endangered at the church of Corinth. In addition, the false teachers blasphemed the gospel, delivered by Paul, making people suspect the authority of the Apostle. That's why Paul had to leave there, blamed and suspected at the last visit.
Paul sends a letter to urge them to repent before his third visit. And in Verse 23, he tells them the reason of not coming to them yet is to spare them, which means if he were there, he would have to scold them for idolatry and false teachings. Then, it would become sorrowfulness for the church. Therefore, Paul sends a letter instead for the purpose of repentance, which is what he says help of their joy.
In Corinthians 2:1-3, "But I determined this with myself, that I would not come again to you in heaviness. For if I make you sorry, who is he then that maketh me glad, but the same which is made sorry by me? And I wrote this same unto you, lest, when I came, I should have sorrow from them of whom I ought to rejoice; having confidence in you all, that my joy is the joy of you all."
Paul calls them the people who can make him glad, but if he went there and had dominion over them for the people going astray with the gospel, he would rather give grief to those who are supposed to make him glad, resulting in sending the letter not to receive grief from the people who would make him delighted. He is saying that when they repent after receiving the letter, there is no reason to experience of sorrowfulness between the Corinthians and the Apostle Paul. In this sense, what makes him happy is their repentance at the church of Corinth. Why?
In Luke 15:7, it says, "I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance."
God's joy is not on ninety nine who need no repentance, but on the repentance of one sinner. The ninety nine could be referred to as those who are perfect on attending all meetings. Then, they are the joy to the pastor of the church, which, I am sure, can't be denied by any pastor. The advantage for the church organization is not the one sinner's repentance but the ninety nine's passionate devotion.
Yet, we must pay attention on the fact that God's joy in His heart is only on the repentance of one sinner. What indeed is the reason? Repentance is to look up only to the Lord, while cognizing one's sin. This cannot be done by our will or decision because sinful nature is to approach to God with its accumulated works of one's righteousness, which belongs to the ninety nine without any need of repentance.
Repentance is an evidence of the fact that God has found His Own people. That is why the repentance of one sinner becomes the joy of God. Paul's joy is the joy that has come to know the joy of God in the work of loving heart that is from the joy of the repentance of one sinner. Therefore, Paul's joy is from what God is delighted with.
In this sense, joy in the Bible has nothing to do with emotions nor anything derived from worldly possessions or experiences. Paul sees from repentance the love of God seeking for His people.
One, realizing one's sinfulness in the repentance, can't help thinking of God's love that has forgiven all sins and transgressions. Thus, the repenting sinner also participates the joy of God. For this reason, Paul is saying that the sending of the letter to urge them to repent is to spare them and help their joy.
There is no better joy for believers than to get to know the love of God in His grace. The Word of God is what draws us to this joy. We come to see our sinful nature through the Bible and be led to joy of knowing His forgiving love and grace. Thus, joy for believers doesn't depend on whether the circumstance is good or not, but it rather overcomes it. For this joy is only by faith, Paul says, "for by faith, you stand."
When the Word of God becomes reality for believers, the Kingdom of Heaven is realized. Then, the Kingdom of Heaven will lead us to joyfulness and thanksgiving. Faith leads us this way. Consequently, there is no need to try to be joyful or require to rejoice because God Himself will make His own People in this way. This is what God is doing for us as Immanuel.
What we shouldn't forget is that God is not working for our joy. Many Christians omit this in their minds. God is working for His joy and believers are the participants of it.
If He were for our joy, the joy wouldn't be consistent as the joy for some would be sorrow for others. If I were promoted at work, someone would have to be disappointed not to be promoted by me. This is reality in this wicked world, so it is impossible for all believers to rejoice at all times in our earthly joy.
That is why our joy is to be united into God's joy. When one comes to understand that knowing His love and grace is utmost blessing, one rejoices even without earthly possession. This is what is called, 'joy of faith.'
We mustn't focus on the fact that we have been saved or blessed but on the cross of the Lord, where the love of God was confirmed. Joy in the Bible is saying, 'Amen', to the work of the Lord and knowing how He is working in His infinite grace. This joy is even strengthened in discomforts, anxiety and worries of our circumstances, resulting in rejoicing evermore.
When believers look up to the Kingdom of Heaven, the earthly possessions become meaningless. Thus, attempts to rejoice with earthly possessions are also meaningless. The base of joy is not here on earth but God. Whatever God is doing becomes the base of our joy. Whatever we face in this world, we can rejoice evermore. The complete work of His salvation that the Lord has fulfilled on the cross makes us walk on the path of joyfulness everyday!
