<설교>

Chapter 47

Faith and Doubt

And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.

And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased.

Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God. (Matthew 14:28-33 KJV)

(Sermon)

Apostle Paul had a confidence of the gospel he preached. In Romans 8:38-39, Paul said, "For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,

Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord." Where do you think his confidence comes from?

He experienced tremendous predicaments because of the gospel he preached. Instead of experiences of avoiding difficulties, he solely took them all. Nevertheless, he is sure of the love of God. If we were in his shoe, we would have doubted whether God loved us or even existed. In this sense, he had something we don't have.

In terms of circumstances, It seems to us Paul had an advantage we don't have. Above all, we can think he had strong faith and confidence because he had heard the Lord's voice on the road to Damascus. We might say if we had heard His voice like Paul, we would never doubt the Lord and the Word of God, and have a confidence in depth.

However, this attitude simply shows that we don't treat the Bible as the Word of God because it would mean we believe in experiences if we differentiate believing in the Bible from hearing the Lord's physical voice as Paul did. Do you think Paul had his confidence because he had the experience of meeting Jesus? If so, he would have testified his experiences. He would have shouted at people to hear the voice of the Lord as he did. Yet, he treated even his experience of being in the third heaven as if it were nothing.

His confidence was not based on his experience but the Word of God. His belief that everything is done according to the Word of God makes him reside in his confidence. Thus, if we don't reside in the same confidence as he did, it is not because we can't experience miracles, but we don't have a belief that all things are accomplished by the will of God in the Bible. This is the very difference between Paul and us.

In the passage we have read, the Lord said to Peter, who was drowning after having walked on the surface of water, "why did you doubt?" His question could be understood, "if he hadn't doubted, he could have kept walking on the water." If so, must we get rid of doubt in order to experience of walking on water? If not the miracle of walking on water, do we have to eliminate our doubt to experience miracles in general?

We can often hear, "throw away your doubt." We, however, have to ask ourselves if we can throw away our doubt. You might have a doubt in your mind. There might be time to time doubts of God's existence or that of heaven in your thoughts.

Nonetheless, we wouldn't admit that there is a doubt in our mind because it is difficult to say that due to the atmosphere of modern Christianity, considering the same as non-believers. It is not easy to be honest of having doubts under the mood of treating believers when having doubts of God's existence.

Most Christians say they believe in the Bible, including God's existence and heaven and hell. Yet, if we take a look at our daily lives, we can't say that it is not true we are living without faith. We are living for ourselves, fulfilling our wills depending on what we see, not different from the wicked world which denies the existence of God while saying we believe in it. Saying we believe in the Kingdom of Heaven is just words in our lips, but the focus and intent of our lives are toward this visible world.

Even so, if we don't have a doubt about God's existence and heaven, it is not because of faith matter but self-confidence at most. It might be no different from being brain-washed after having been taught for a long time at church. Then, what do you think it means to be living in faith other than being caught by self-assurance? This is what today's passage tells us about.

In Verse 28, "And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water." If he found the one walking on the water the Lord and wanted to walk on the water too, it is our common sense for us to ask, "Lord, make me walk on the water," or "give me the power to walk on the water." The content of our prayer doesn't go further than that. Unlike us, Peter said, "bid me come unto thee on the water."

'Bid me' means 'speak to me.' In other words, he believed the Lord's Word could make him walk on the water. If so, it is true that he believed in the power of His Word, which means he thought walking on the water was the matter of being caught by the power of the Lord's Word and not himself doing it after receiving the power from Him.

Even when he stepped on the water and began to walk, it is not because he thought he could walk but depended on the Lord's Word. Then, he was right. When, however, the strong wind blew, he was scared and drowning.

The reason he was scared of the wind is he thought he could die, forgetting what made him walking on the water. Peter, who was walking on the water, was in the world of Jesus Christ, whose Word was the power to keep him from drowning. His walking on the water was the evidence of being in the world. Then, he momentarily forgot the reality of being captured by the new world due to the reality of the wind. This is called, 'doubt.'

The world of Jesus Christ has no death. Even in terms of the matter of our surroundings, there is nothing to be afraid of because being caught by the world of Christ means we belong to life. Yet, we are surrounded by doubts such as, 'do I deserve to receive blessings from God when I live like this?' or 'can I go to heaven?' because we are buried by questions like 'I shouldn't die now', 'I must succeed', or 'I should be happy.' Therefore, the reason why we have doubts is we are seeking for the Lord for our own sake, which generates a question, 'is it OK with my life in faith like this?'

We can find the reason that Paul had the confidence of God's love was because he had no mind of 'I don't deserve to receive difficulties.' He knew he deserved predicaments, so he had no reason to falter in faith. Thus, what we mustn't forget is, "who am I?'

Ask yourselves these questions, "am I qualified for heaven?", "do I deserve God's blessings?", "do I have a right to live comfortably without suffering?" Answer these above not by what you do but what's inside, your nature, living for fulfilling your wills with infinite greed! We can answer ourselves, "I am the enemy of God."

Then, for the enemy of God, there is nothing but judgement of God. However, by coming of Jesus Christ, dying on the cross, forgiving our sin, He proclaimed, "you have no sin." If so, we are under the love of God. Regardless our circumstances, we have come to be under His infinite grace for sure. This is the faith with no doubt.

People wish to have no wind in their lives, causing them to seek for God. They even decorate themselves with many religious acts for that wish. They mistakenly think they are doing well when having no wind. When seeing blowing wind, they are afraid and it is the time to reveal that they have no faith at all.

There is no stopping moment of blowing wind in our lives. We could anytime falter and fall into fear and worries. What should we do? It is not easy to answer. What you need to focus on is the fact that believers are the ones being caught by the Word of God. We have been living so far not by my own power but the power of His Word. No matter how hard the wind blows, it can't be changed that we are being held by His Word. What makes us obey the Word of God while being captured by the Word of God is the Power of the Word of God itself!

The one thing, then, we should remember is that the way we go by the Word of God is not the way that we think would be comfortable. Inevitably, there are a lot of predicaments on the way because the Word of God is leading us on the way where Jesus walked. If we know this, we come to look onto Jesus at any situation at all times.

In Matthew 10:28-29, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father."

There is no sparrow fall without God's permission. If so, all the winds blowing in our lives are done by the will of God as well. If so, there is nothing for us to worry about because God is love. Don't try to look for Jesus for your own happiness because that is what the Bible says 'doubt.' Think of Jesus, who has come to the one who doesn't deserve happiness nor joy like me! This is what the Bible teaches, 'faith with no doubt.'
