<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 49

Faith and Holiness

And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. (Leviticus 11:41-45 KJV)

(Sermon)

In Verse 45, it says, "For I am the LORD that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy."

Israelites already knew the Lord as God. They thought they served God in the proper relationship. Then, why do you think God said, "to be your God"? 'To be your God' could be understood, 'I am not your God yet.' In other words, the Israelites didn't know who God is.

What He did to be their God was to bring them out of Egypt, and His bringing them out of Egypt was to make them a holy people. This is the will of God for Israel.

In 1 Thessalonians 4:3, it says, "For this is the will of God, even your sanctification, that ye should abstain from fornication." In Verse 7 and 8 of the same book, it also says, "For God hath not called us unto uncleanness, but unto holiness.

He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit."

In the verses mentioned above, we can see the will of God for the people in His covenant is focused on holiness. Thus, it is true that we should always be interested in being holy because we wouldn't be children of God in His covenant if not holy, that is, we are to be aware that we are His holy people.

The passage we have read is of the purification ritual related to food. The ritual of purification is the law that judges people whether clean or unclean depending on keeping the ritual. This played a very important role among Israelites. For 'being unclean' was accepted as being eradicated from the people of God, this ritual had the power to make them act out to obey.

However, God's intent to give this law was not to purify them by obeying it, which means that it was not for them to keep their holiness if they obeyed the law for the matters of touching, eating, or wearing something. Yet, they interpreted it as the law they would have to perform. Not only did they interpret it in this way, but they also did interpret the other laws of Moses in the same way, which they would have to act out. It was no wonder they saw Jesus as the one who broke the law of Moses.

Purification, that is, holiness means division(separation). The reason God gave them the purification law was not to forget the fact that they are to be separated or divided from the world while they are living in a routine such as eating, wearing, or touching. In other words, this is the love of God to leave them in this wicked world as His holy people.

Being holy or sanctification is linked to God's creation. In Genesis 2:3, "And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made", which means God divided the seventh day from the other six for sanctification. This is the beginning of Sabbath day.

If so, how different is the seventh day from the other six? The seventh is the day when God rested after finishing the creation, so the Sabbath has the meaning of joining God's rest. Joining God's rest means to believe the creation of six days is not done by men but God. For this reason, God told them to stop all labors, which means to remind them they live not by their own power but by God's grace. This is Sabbath.

Therefore, we can't help laying our works or power before God's rest because our works or power would be meaningless and forgotten since God's grace has fed and sustained us. In this sense, laying off ourselves before God's work and grace is sanctification, and making His own people holy beings is the will of God.

Then, we can find that holiness is not related to human works but to faith. We might often think holiness can be shown from our characters or personalities, but what we can never produce is 'righteousness.' Holiness means to be right, so if our characters and personalities cannot make righteousness, we can conclude that we can never make ourselves holy.

We are just beings in sinful nature. This is prevalent to all human beings regardless of our characters or personalities, so in terms of sinful nature, there is no difference between believers and non-believers. Yet, there is one difference, which is the fact that believers never claim their works or righteousness that non-believers show off because, believers are being illuminated to see their sinful nature, they are aware that they only deserve God's judgement. Believers are different from non-believers because they are looking up to the righteousness of heaven and believe in the truth that they belong to the righteousness while denying themselves.

That is why God led Israel out of Egypt. It is not because Israelites were better than Egyptians nor more righteous, but they were chosen to be a tool to proclaim the righteousness of God. Therefore, the very work of Israelites is to give thanks to God for belonging to the righteousness of God while not thinking of their own righteousness but cognizing their own sinful nature.

God says to be holy for He is holy. What is God's holiness? God is invisible, so is His holiness.

His holiness includes the meaning of separation. He is different from the world, which means imaginable god by humans is not the real God because an imaginary god of men who always live for themselves is for men's glory. Having this kind of god in hearts is a way to refuse the true God, who has sacrificed to redeem us.

Why God said to Israelites to be holy doesn't mean to fulfill it by themselves, but we can understand it as a directional nature of how God leads them to be. In other words, God is guiding them to the direction of holiness, which is the given-mission by God, the reason of their existence and His will of being with them out of Egypt.

Thus, if the Israelites had understood why God said to them to be holy for He is holy with the purification ritual, they would have accepted their way of life as separation from the world. But, alas, they envied gentiles, were attracted by their cultures and riches, and imported their idols, wishing to enjoy what the gentiles were having.

Our problem is we are always us-centered, which means to prioritize our rest over God's, that is, the seventh day is gone and only six days are left. Having only six days means to refuse the fact that we are to live as creatures in God's creation, and to live by our strength and works to achieve our own comforts and rest. This is the character of the world, off holiness and defined as unclean.

Then, what do you think it means if God still leads us to the direction of holiness? What kind of people do you think He will make God-called people? According to what has been mentioned earlier, God will make His people a people, who keeps His holiness, which cannot be found in this world, in their hearts while acknowledging they are only self-centered sinners. That's why holiness can be viewed as directional nature.

Some may try to find holiness from outlooks, but we have to notice that it can be always produced artificially at any time regardless of faith, and we should remember, as spoken already, holiness-like made in human mind has no essence of it at all but is nothing more than a try to imitate God's.

In Verse 41 and 42, it says, "And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination."

There is nothing wrong with food. There are no elements to make us unclean. In Chapter 11 of Acts, Peter experienced to see a vision of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

Then, he heard, "Arise, Peter; slay and eat." He refused it by saying, "Not so, Lord: for nothing common or unclean hath at any time entered into my mouth." (Acts 11:9 KJV) He said it according to the purification ritual. Yet, what he heard again was, "What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common."

The animals on the ritual of purification are related to touching the earth. The reason why God said not to eat those which are living touching on the ground of the earth is to teach them His holiness is a separation from the world. The purification ritual was set up for this purpose.

We are living on this cursed land. God's love is to have gotten us out of this land. Therefore, believers are the ones who live by the love of God, not our own strength. This is what the Bible teaches us 'holiness'!
