<설교>

Chapter 65

Faith and Positive Thinking

And they returned from searching of the land after forty days.

And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan.

And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.

But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.

And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature.

And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight. (Numbers 13:25-33 KJV)

(Sermon)

When preachers encourage people who are having difficulties among the congregation, we often hear they say opportunities can be found in times of crisis, which means to consider the time a way for God to train them. It sounds good and may be effective for encouragement in hardships.

However, it seems to me that this kind of effect is no more than a psychological phenomenon. In other words, it has nothing to do with faith. Thus, we have to be very careful about such expressions although many believe that positive thinking can solve problems of life.

First of all, there is no such thing like positiveness of faith in the Bible. Of course, there are some verses that seem like it. For example, Jesus says in Mark 9:23, "If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth." Or, Paul says in Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." Many preachers use these verse to emphasize on the topic of positive thinking in faith. Today's passage is also one of them used in the same purpose.

When the children of Israel arrived right before the Promised Land, the Lord told Moses to send a ruler from every tribe to Canaan to search out. Moses obeyed God accordingly.

They returned after search of the land for forty days and reported to Moses, saying even though the land was full of milk and honey, people were powerful, and the cities were fortified and very large. They said they had even seen descendants of Anak there. Descendants of Anak were known giants in strength. They meant they couldn't go in to occupy the land. Many preachers interpret that what they said was negative thinking, 'no, I can't.'

On the contrary, Caleb said, "Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it", interpreted that this is positive thinking, 'yes, I can.'

After the rest rulers heard Caleb, they claimed what they had said to Moses more strongly. They emphasized on the fact that the people in the land were much stronger than them, and they were like grasshoppers compared to them. They were saying all these in comparison of the reality between the two peoples. Is that all we can think of their way of thinking as 'negative'?

What Caleb said is the conviction from faith, looking at God's covenant. In other words, he believed God would fulfill His Words, giving the land to the children of Israel. On the other hand, the rest didn't believe in God by saying they were weak. Therefore, this is the matter of whether depending on God, fulfilling His covenant, or not. It is not a matter of the positive or negative thinking.

In Numbers 14:9, it says, "Only rebel not ye against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us: their defense is departed from them, and the LORD is with us: fear them not."

All Caleb was saying is focusing on the fact that God be with them. He showed faith that for God be with them, they would win over the Canaanites. We shouldn't conclude that this is his positive thinking. If his positive thinking were faith and of faith, positive thinking would have to be seen only in believers, but since we can hear it from everywhere in our societies by saying, "You can do it", this is a mere psychological way of thinking.

If we read or listen to sermons of popular preachers in Christianity around the world, we can find that most of them mention it, which means that no more than psychology, 'positive way of thinking', is disguising itself in the name of faith. Such faith hardly brings out what sin is because sin is considered negativity. Instead, happy life and blessings are filling in their sermons.

'Positive thinking' goes parallel with 'active thinking', based on an idea, 'you can change your life if you change your mind.' This idea is satanic, plainly denying God. Nonetheless, many preachers are preaching on positive thinking, not the gospel, revealing that they are going astray with the Word of God, that is, life.

Why 'positive thinking' is welcomed in modern christianity is from a desire of self-approval and being approved by others. Many people say they know they are sinners, which sounds self-denial. Yet, we should notice they might say it to attain self-approval and approval from others, that is, by denying themselves, they want to be acknowledged by others, thinking they are sincere christians.

Yet, for believers, Jesus Christ is all and nothing else for them. Our name is not important, but His. His name is lifted, not ours. Believers are happy His work is going well, not ours. There is no need of positive thinking. But, when we use faith to fulfill our own desire, we end up seeking for positive thinking.

God doesn't see us if we have positive or negative thinking. That is not His interest. The people of God is not made of positive thinking but God's work of providence. Likewise, the world of faith never requires positive thinking nor gets involved with it at all.

There were two books renowned in this topic; the Purpose Driven (by Rick Warren) and Your Best Life Now (by Joel Osteen) The books were 'must reads' in many countries and used as textbooks for Bible study. 'The Purpose Driven' proposes a life for christians that purposed life is a true life. Whereas there should be God in the center of believers' life, the book says christians' devotion to God invites God into their hearts, resulting in their peaceful life. The book, 'Your best life now', basically says, 'you can do whatever you want in faith.' This type faith is what people want.

Consequently, what positive thinking wants is richness, success, and health, saying God wants His people to be happy and successful. But, in the biblical point of view, all words in positive thinking are false and not related to the gospel at all. Sadly enough, the reality in the world is that abnormality is accepted as normality and normality is deemed abnormally.

God never approves men. The Bible proclaims all are sinners and wicked, which means God denies men. We are nothing but the ones who deserve His judgement. Although this is what the Bible teaches of men and the evaluation of God toward us, many are trying to be approved by God.

In Numbers 13:1-2, "And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them."

Why is God sending spies to the land since they are right in front of the land of Canaan? It would be easier He would wipe out all Canaanites and let the Israelites in since He had already promised to give it to them. In spite of that, the reason He is doing it is that He is revealing their sin that they believe in what they see and they don't believe in God, who is invisible.

All Israelites cried all night long after they heard what the rulers said, telling us that they had no faith though they were looking at 'God's Promised Land.' They forgot who God is after having eaten Manna for forty years in the wilderness, being captured by what they saw, the descendants of Anak. They were proven they didn't deserve to enter the land. Therefore, we can learn the land was given to the children of Israel in His infinite grace, not by anything from them.

The Word of God always reveals our sin because He wants us to know we live in His grace and love. It always exposes our reality, that is our sinful nature, which fixes our eyes on what is visible, so that we realize fulfilling our desire is nothing but against God.

As a result, positive thinking goes the same way. It is a challenge against God's love and grace, and it is a product that makes us enchanted by ourselves while closing our eyes not to see who we really are before God. If this is taught and preached, it will be another gospel. It will be a pleasure to men and not to God according to Paul in Galatians.

God is leading us to salvation of life. Thus, all believers must focus on the power of God that is maintaining them in salvation. We have to make sure that positive thinking or actively changing mind is nothing but another gospel, entangling human minds in this visible wicked world.
