인내라는 단어는 대개 현재의 고통이나 어려움을 참고 견디는 것으로 이해합니다. 특히 기독교에서는 어떤 어려움과 고통에서도 슬퍼하거나 불평하지 않고 하나님을 믿고 의지하며 참고 견디는 덕목으로 이해됩니다. 그리고 욥을 예로 들면서 참고 견뎠을 때 하나님께서 배의 축복으로 갚으신다는 말도 많이 듣습니다. 그렇다면 인내는 모든 신자가 아니라 특별히 고통과 어려움을 겪고 있는 신자에게만 요구되는 것일까요?
사실 대다수의 신자들은 ‘인내’라는 말을 실감하지 못한다고 할 수 있습니다. 여러분도 다르지 않을 것입니다. 어려움과 고통을 겪고 있는 분이라면 ‘인내’를 현실적인 신앙의 문제로 생각할 수 있겠지만 그에 반해 어려움과 고통이 없이 편안하게 생활하는 분에게는 자신의 현실과는 상관없는 문제로 여겨지기 쉬운 것입니다. 하지만 이것은 인내를 잘못 이해한 결과입니다.
인내는 고난 속에서 나타나게 되어 있습니다. 즉 고난이 없으면 인내도 없는 것입니다. 그런데 고난을 삶에서의 어려움과 고통으로 이해하기 때문에 인내를 그러한 고난의 상황에 있는 신자에게만 필요한 것으로 인식하게 되는 것입니다.
예수님은 마 10:22절에서 “또 너희가 내 이름으로 말미암아 모든 사람에게 미움을 받을 것이나 끝까지 견디는 자는 구원을 얻으리라”고 말씀하십니다.
여러분이 예수를 믿으실 때 이러한 상황을 마음에 두지는 않았을 것입니다. 우리가 기대한 것은 주의 이름으로 말미암은 영광과 복이지 미움 받는 것이 아니기 때문입니다. 오히려 사람들에게 사랑 받기 위해 교회를 찾습니다. 하지만 예수님께서 말씀하신 주의 이름으로 인한 현실은 미움입니다. 때문에 신앙의 세계는 언제나 우리의 기대에서 벗어나 있을 뿐입니다. 그런데 자신의 기대를 가지고 주의 이름을 부르기 때문에 왜곡된 신앙으로 드러나는 것입니다.
본문을 보면 “누구든지 귀가 있거든 들을지어다 사로잡힐 자는 사로잡혀 갈 것이요 칼에 죽을 자는 마땅히 칼에 죽을 것이니 성도들의 인내와 믿음이 여기 있느니라”고 말씀합니다.
사로잡힐 자는 사로잡혀 가고 칼에 죽을 자는 마땅히 칼에 죽는다는 것은 말씀드린 것처럼 우리가 상상하고 기대하는 신앙의 세계가 아닙니다. 우리가 기대하는 신앙의 세계는 사로잡혀 갈 때도 칼에 죽을 때도 하나님이 오셔서 구해주시는 것입니다. 우리는 이것을 신앙의 승리로 생각합니다.
하지만 예수님이 말씀한 신앙의 세계는 사로잡혀가고 마땅히 칼에 죽을 때 인내하고 믿는 입니다. 누가 이러한 신앙 세계를 위해서 주를 찾을 것이며, 이것이 하나님이 함께 하시는 신앙의 세계를 누가 이해하겠습니까? 그래서 “누구든지 귀가 있거든 들을 지어다”라고 말씀하는 것입니다. 들을 귀가 있는 자만 들을 수 있는 세상의 상식을 벗어난 말씀이기 때문입니다.
예수님이 이 길로 가셨습니다. 사로잡히고 죽임을 당하는 어린양의 길로 가신 것입니다. 예수님이 가신 이 길은 세상의 시각에서는 패배자의 모습일 뿐입니다. 때문에 세상은 그것으로 예수님이 하나님의 아들이 아니라는 것을 확신했습니다. 하나님의 아들이라면 힘없이 붙들려 죽지 않을 것이라고 생각했기 때문입니다.
세상은 자기 구원을 위해 신을 찾습니다. 어려움과 고통의 삶에서 구출되고, 평안에 평안을 더하는 축복을 누리기 위해 신을 찾고 그 이름을 부릅니다. 이들에게는 예수님이 십자가에서 피 흘려 죽으신 것도 자기 구원을 위한 것으로 인식될 뿐, 주의 이름을 부르는 자신이 가야 할 길로는 생각하지 않습니다. 따라서 이들에게 주의 이름으로 인한 고난은 없는 것이 당연하고 인내 또한 없습니다. 인내가 없다는 것은 견디는 것이 없다는 것이고 견디는 것이 없다는 것은 주의 길을 가지 않는다는 뜻이기에 구원 또한 없다는 결론을 내릴 수 있습니다.
자신을 지키기 위해 주의 이름을 부르는 것은 믿음이 아닙니다. 믿음은 예수님의 죽으심 앞에서 죽음이 마땅한 자신을 보게 하며 예수 그리스도가 생명이심을 믿게 합니다. 그렇기 때문에 살고자 하는 것이 죄임을 알게 하고 죽는 길로 끌어가는 능력이 믿음입니다.
이 믿음을 전했을 때 세상은 어떻게 반응할까요? 자신의 믿음이 잘못되었음을 깨닫고 참된 믿음을 받아들일까요? 그러한 반응을 보인다면 그것은 이미 하나님이 그에게 개입하셨다는 증거입니다. 하나님이 개입하지 않고서는 그런 반응은 있을 수 없기 때문입니다.
이 말은 하나님이 개입하지 않으시고 버려두신 상태에서 인간의 종교심으로 주를 찾고, 자신이 원하고 기대하는 종교 세계를 품고 있는 사람은 죽는 길로 끌려가는 믿음의 세계를 절대로 이해할 수 없다는 것입니다. 따라서 참된 믿음을 거부하게 되는 것이고, 복음을 배척하며 그 복음을 말하는 사람을 미워하는 것입니다. 이것이 세상이 추구하는 종교 세계이기 때문에 세상에서 주를 믿는다는 것 자체가 고난이 되는 것입니다. 다시 말해서 삶의 환경과 상관없이 복음을 믿는 신자는 고난의 길을 가고 있기 때문에 끝까지 견디라는 말씀을 하는 것입니다.
끝까지 견딘다는 것은 특별히 어떤 의지의 노력을 요구하는 말이 아닙니다. 복음에 대해서 세상이 어떻게 반응하든 그것을 당연하게 받아들이며 십자가에 피 흘려 죽으신 예수님의 공로를 믿는 자로 사는 것입니다. 그것이 인내입니다. 그래서 인내가 곧 믿음이며 믿음이 인내이기에 인내가 없는 믿음은 믿음이 아닌 것이 됩니다.
세상은 신자가 믿음으로 사는 것을 가치 없는 헛된 일로 여깁니다. 이유는 믿음으로 살아도 잘 되는 것이 없기 때문입니다. 예수를 믿어도 삶의 형편이 달라지지 않고, 때로는 오히려 고통과 어려움을 겪게 될 때 조롱을 받기도 합니다. 심지어는 예수를 말하는 교회 안에서도 세상 가치관을 기준하여 믿음을 차별하기도 합니다. 신자는 이러한 세상 속에서 주만 바라보는 사람입니다. 모든 사람이 보이는 것에 소망을 두고 살아갈 때 신자는 믿음에 의해서 알게 된 보이는 않는 세계에 소망을 두고 살아갈 뿐입니다. 이것이 견디는 것이고 인내하는 것입니다.
롬 5:3,4절을 보면 “다만 이뿐 아니라 우리가 환난 중에도 즐거워하나니 이는 환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄 앎이로다”고 말합니다.
환난은 고생을 말하지 않습니다. 환난은 예수님께 붙들려 가는 것 자체를 의미합니다. 세상으로부터 조롱 받으시고 붙들려 죽으신 예수님을 바라보며 예수님을 믿는 것은 세상에서 잘 사는 것과 전혀 상관없음을 알면서 천국에 소망을 두고 끌려가는 그것이 환난입니다. 이 믿음을 오직 자기를 지키고 자신의 생존을 위해 주의 이름을 부르는 사람들에게 내어 놓는다면 반대를 받는 것이 당연한 것입니다.
바울에게는 환난 중에서도 즐거워 할 수 있는 엄청난 것이 있었습니다. 그것은 롬 5:1-2절에서 “그러므로 우리가 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 받았으니 우리 주 예수 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리자 또한 그로 말미암아 우리가 믿음으로 서 있는 이 은혜에 들어감을 얻었으며 하나님의 영광을 바라고 즐거워하느니라”고 말씀하는 것처럼 믿음으로 의롭다 하심을 얻고, 그리스도로 말미암아 하나님과 화평을 누리게 됨으로 하나님의 영광을 바랄 수 있게 된 것 때문입니다.
여러분이 그리스도를 믿는 즐거움은 무엇입니까? 과연 그리스도로 인한 즐거움이 있기는 합니까? 현대의 기독교인은 그리스도로 말미암은 즐거움에는 관심이 없고 교회로 말미암아 즐거움에 치우쳐 있다고 할 수 있습니다. 교회가 즐거움이 되기를 원하는 것입니다.
물론 교회가 즐거움이 되는 것이 바람직합니다. 하지만 신자에게 교회가 즐거움이 된다면 그것은 교회에서 행해지는 여러 행사로 인한 만족이 아니라 말씀이 그 본질이어야 합니다. 말씀을 들으며 그리스도를 알아가고 그 길에서 함께 동행하는 지체를 만나서 주의 은혜를 나누는 것이 즐거움이어야 합니다. 여러분은 이러한 즐거움에 관심을 두고 이러한 즐거움이 있기를 원합니다. 그렇지 않다면 교회는 단지 취미생활일 뿐입니다.
종교세계는 그리스도로 말미암아 이루어진 하나님과의 화평에는 관심이 없고 자신의 공로와 의로 하나님과 화평의 관계를 맺으려고 합니다. 하나님께 잘 보여야 원하는 것을 얻을 수 있다는 심보입니다. 이것이 인간이 욕망이고 이 욕망을 이루기 위해 신을 찾는 것이 종교입니다. 그리고 복음은 가차 없이 이 종교성으로 인해 하나님의 진노를 쌓고 멸망에 이르게 될 것을 경고하는 것입니다. 그래서 복음을 알고 복음을 믿는다는 것만으로 신자는 고난의 길을 가는 것이고 고난에서도 하나님의 영광을 바라고 그 영광으로 인해 즐거워합니다.
신자는 복음으로 인한 고난을 누리는 사람입니다. 말씀드린 것처럼 우리의 의지로 고난을 누리고 견디고 인내하는 것이 아니라 우리가 알게 된 복음에 담긴 엄청난 복된 세계가 고난에서도 복음으로 기뻐하고 감사하게 함으로 견디게 하는 것입니다.
신자는 속에 보이는 세상 현실을 품고 있는 것이 아니라 보이지 않는 영원한 세계, 천국을 품고 있습니다. 천국에서 영원히 누리는 하나님의 영광에 마음이 향해 있기에 세상에서 잠시 겪는 고난에 흔들리지 않게 되는 것입니다. 오히려 배척 받고 조롱 받는 복음이 포기 되지 않는 자신으로 인해 하나님의 함께 하심과 일하심을 실감하게 되며 하나님께 감사하게 될 분입니다. 이것이 세상이 감당하지 못하는 신자이며 성령은 신자를 이 길로 가게 하는 것입니다.
다시 말하지만 복음의 길은 세상과는 다른 길입니다. 이것이 고난입니다. 그럼에도 복음의 길을 포기하지 못하는 것은 복음의 길에만 영원한 생명이 있음을 알았기 때문입니다. 그 앎이 여러분을 끝까지 견디게 아며 인내와 믿음에 있게 합니다. 여러분이 무엇을 하든 어디에 있든 누구를 만나든 상관없이 내가 그리스도를 십자가에 못 박은 죄인이며 그 모든 죄가 예수 그리스도의 피로 용서되었음을 믿는 것이 끝까지 견디는 인내입니다.

Patience and Faith
If any man have an ear, let him hear.
He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints. (Revelation 13:9-10 KJV)

'Patience' is understood endurance and perseverance of difficulties in life. In Christianity, it is even a virtue to trust in God, bearing all afflictions and not complaining about them. We often hear an illustration that God blessed Job in double after going through all his hardships with his patience. If so, is patience required only to those who are experiencing adversities?
It must be true that most believers can't recognize 'patience' in their daily lives. So must you. Only those who are going through pains and difficulties can cognize it in their reality, but those who aren't can't easily associate it with their lives. However, this is misunderstanding of 'patience.'
Patience is from sufferings, which means there is no patience if there is no sufferings. Since suffering is understood hardships and pains in lives, we may misunderstand that patience is needed only for those who are in the situations.
The Lord said in Matthew 10:22, "And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved."
You may not keep the situation in mind as believing in Jesus because our expectation in the name of the Lord is glory and blessing, not hatred of all men. We rather attend the meetings to be loved by others. The Lord, however, said the hatred by all men due to His name in reality. Thus, we learn life by faith doesn't work with what we want. Calling His name with our expectation makes our life go astray with the Bible.
In the passage, it says, "If any man have an ear, let him hear.
He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints."
Being captured or killed is not, as spoken, what we want. What we want is rather to be saved by God in captivity. We may think it is the victory of faith.
However, the world of faith is to be patient and believe in Him when captured and killed. Who would trust in the Lord for such faith and who would understand this kind of faith is with the presence of God? That's why it says, "If any man have an ear, let him hear." It is because the Word of God is for only those who are given an ear to hear.
Jesus walked this way, which is for the Lamb of God, captured and killed. The way He walked is a loss in the world's point of view, giving conviction that Jesus is not the Son of God because the belief of the world was that the Son of God wouldn't have died in weakness.
The world seeks for God for salvation. People pursue God for their comforts and blessings in this world while saved from afflictions and pains. They view the cross of Jesus as the function of their salvation to guarantee the eternal life, not the way they should walk. Thus, there is no suffering nor patience for His name's sake. No patience means no endurance. No endurance means not to walk His way, resulting in no salvation at all.
Faith is not to call His name to protect oneself. Faith is to have one look at oneself who deserves death in the death of Jesus Christ and believe that He is life. Thus, the power of death is to let one realize a desire to live for oneself is sin and lead one to the way of death.
When we preach this faith to the world, how do you think it would react to it? Do you think the world would accept the faith in repentance? If so, it must be the result of God's intervention; otherwise, it would be impossible.
In other words, without God's work, people who seek for God for their salvation and blessings in their enthusiasm can never understand the world of faith, which leads to death, resulting in the fact that they deny the true faith and the gospel and end up hating those who preach the gospel. Since this is what the religions of the world are pursuing, believing in the Lord itself can be 'suffering' in the world. That's why the Lord said to endure till the end because believers are always in sufferings regardless of their circumstances.
Enduring to the end doesn't mean to require some special efforts and willingness, but to live in faith that believes in the work of Jesus, shedding His blood on the cross, while disregarding the reactions of the world to the gospel. This is called 'patience.' Therefore, patience is faith and faith is patience. Faith without patience is not faith.
The world never pays attention on faith of believers because it thinks that faith doesn't benefit life in the world, regarding that there is nothing to make life better. It even despises believers in hardships. Even among christians, there are differentiations judging each other's faith by the world point of view. Believers are the ones who look up to the Lord even in these situations. They live in the desire of the invisible world while others living for things that are visible. This is to endure and be patient.
In Romans 5:3-4, "And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;
And patience, experience; and experience, hope."
A tribulation is not a difficulty. It is to walk captured by the Lord itself. The tribulation is to be drawn by the Lord, who was despised and killed by the world, looking up to Him in the desire of heaven, knowing faith has nothing to do with richness in the world. It is inevitable that people who call the name of God for their own sake abhor this kind of faith.
It is marvelous that there is happiness in tribulations for Paul, explained in Romans 5:1-2, "Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God."
What is happiness for you believing in Christ? Is there even a little happiness due to Him? In modern Christianity, it is not overstated that people are too much focusing on their visible churches, not the glory of Christ. Their glory is what they can see.
Of course, their visible gatherings should be their joy, but not the meetings themselves are their satisfaction but the Word of God should be. Hearing the Word of God, getting to know who Christ is and sharing the grace of the Lord should be the joy for us. I hope you will have the interest in this joy. Otherwise, attending meetings is nothing more than a hobby.
The religious world never wants to know the peace with God through Christ, but always tries to produce peace by its endeavor and righteousness, which is a bargain to get blessings from God in exchange. This is human greed, fed by religions. The gospel warns to such world for its perishing in God's wrath. Thus, understanding the gospel and believing in it itself become sufferings for believers. Furthermore, they are happy, looking up to God in His glory.
Believers are the ones who are in sufferings due to the gospel. As spoken earlier, it is not that we are willing to endure the sufferings but that the great joy known to us in the gospel makes us be patient with them.
Believers have the invisible world that is eternal in their mind, not the world here. They don't falter by temporal sufferings owing to the predisposition toward the glory of God. They rather come to give thanks to God for His work that is holding their faith that never gives up on the gospel, which is rejected and despised by the world. Believers are the people of whom the world is not worthy.
Once again, the way of the gospel is different from that of the world. This is called 'sufferings.' Nevertheless, they can never give it up because they have come to know there is the eternal life only in the way of the gospel. That knowing makes them endure until the end, and produces patience and faith. Knowing the fact, 'I am the sinner who crucified Christ and have been forgiven by His blood' is the patience that makes us endure to the end.
