<본문>

<설교>

Chapter 82

Faith and Peace

In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks.

Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in.

Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength. (Isaiah 27:1-4 KJV)

(Sermon)

Last week, I told you about victory. Since the victory to overcome the world is faith, we meditated that believers, who believe that Jesus is the Son of God, are the ones who overcome the world. Nevertheless, we can't easily empathize with the victory because it is radically different from the victory we want to have.

Although it is true that we can understand from the christian's point of view that no one will overcome the world other than believers because there is the eternal life only in Christ, it is also admitted that we can't feel it in our reality. Consequently, we tend to depend on the world though we say amen to the fact that having Christ in us is to overcome the world.

Another reason the victory sounds unrealistic is that we always carry worries and anxieties in spite of the fact that we believe in Christ. That is, there is no peace in us. Theoretically speaking, we should have peace, which wipes out all fears and anxieties when we have faith, which overcomes the world. Yet, the reality is that the peace seems far from us since we are living in worries and anxieties rather than peaceful mind, not different from people in the world, thinking there is no peace, no victory to overcome the world.

All believers want peace. They want peace not only from their current environments but also in their hearts from difficult situations for the time to come. For such reason, many people seek for God. Yet, how many people can enjoy peace by faith?

The peace we want in mind is controlled by environment. It really depends on the situations we are in. We may be filled with wrath, despair, depression, or annoyance as we currently hear the news that there are many damages and losses by earthquakes and floods. We, believers, can't be free from the situations.

Those who misunderstand 'faith and the Holy Spirit' think that they should overcome the nature of anger, disappointment, jealousy and hatred if they have been given faith and received the Holy Spirit. As a result, they come to wonder if they have faith or the Holy Spirit after they are angry or hate someone. This is what I would say 'the loss of peace.'

Some people like to talk about characters of believers, saying believers should present appropriate characters. We can, with no difficulty, see what kind of character they are talking about, that is, a beautiful character that everyone welcomes.

However, there is no place in the Bible, saying that faith and the Holy Spirit would produce good characters or lovely personalities in believers. It is simply a misunderstanding that moral behaviors and ethics are part of the work of faith and the Holy Spirit. This is what believers should be extra careful about because Satan always allures us with something seemingly good.

One thing for sure is that no good environment can provide peace. People might have no worries in nice environment. Yet, living with no worries is not living with peace. They just don't have the matters and anxieties that others have. Foremost, even if one's situation looks perfect, there is one thing that can't be overcome, death. Thus, there is no peace in the world.

In Verse 3, it says, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee."

In those days, Israelites were greatly suffering from Babylon. They had lost everything, even the Temple and the holy things. It was so miserable that many had died and were captured. No one would in this situation expected peace in mind.

To such, Prophet proclaimed that the Lord would keep them in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on the Lord. 'Whose mind is stayed' is explained in the latter of the verse, 'trusting in the Lord.'

What do you think they were thinking of God after they had lost everything they had? In our own cases, we might be very confused, saying, "has God forsaken me?", "am I being punished?", or "is there God?" This is called, 'not trusting in the Lord' and 'whose mind is not stayed on the Lord.'

If one trusts in the Lord, one must believe that God will lead one to a better way in all kinds of circumstances. This faith makes one falter not in any case and stay in the Lord.

In the Book of Ezekiel, Prophet was in the captive with other Israelites. In this predicament, how would he have trusted in the Lord? We can't quickly conclude that he was a God-calling prophet.

In Ezekiel 16:59, he said that Israel deserved the situation because they were disobedient to God, not God forsook them. Therefore, he could deliver the Word of God as it was since God was still his God regardless of his own situation.

Ezekiel is not the only one found, whose mind is stayed in the Lord. In Jeremiah 31:32, Prophet, Jeremiah, also said Israel deserved all the hardships as they broke the covenant with God. All the cause was on Israelites.

No matter what kinds of surroundings we are put in, we can't repel God by saying, "why?" It is because we are the very ones who live self-centered, betraying the Word of God and not trusting in the Lord. Once again, we must remember we don't deserve to ask God 'why?' in any circumstances.

Thus, we can learn that 'whose mind is not stayed in the Lord' means that one is captured by a thought, 'why are all the bad things happening since God is with me?' One knows neither oneself nor God.

God never promised to give His people comfortable circumstances. Pondering that even the things are all gone with death, there is no relationship with life. Then, would God promise us to be with us for what is lifeless? Here, we can conclude that 'being obsessed with visible things, desiring comfortable environments and wishing peace are to prove that one is not stayed on the Lord and has no peace at all.

The world is the place, captured by the curse. Yet, we don't sense it, so, we in our sinful nature are inclined to live, wishing to gain power and envying others who have money, not being thankful for the salvation.

In Isaiah 25:8, it says, "He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces; and the rebuke of his people shall he take away from off all the earth: for the LORD hath spoken it."

Believers view a different world. They trust in the Lord, looking forward to the world of salvation with no death. Such trust enables them to overcome all the circumstances and situations, prospecting the world, fulfilled by God. This is called the true 'peace.' It is not a condition of having no worries and anxieties, but a desire to be in His kingdom, where there is no death, even in worries and anxieties.

What do you believe in? Do you think you will enjoy peaceful environment if God be with us? It is faith in vain because God never has promised us for that. What He has promised us is the world with no death. Thus, the love of God is revealed by His work, which He redeems His people from the cursed world and delivers them to the world of life.

While Noah was building the ark, people in the world didn't understand him. When the world was inundated by the flood, they came to realize the meaning of the ark, which is how good it is to be in the ark.

If one doesn't think there is judgement in the world, one doesn't need to know the world of life, which has no death. On the contrary, if one knows the judgement in the world, one will find what one needs most is nothing but Jesus Christ. Being in Jesus Christ is the most precious blessing. The faith, given to believers, brings them into the world of peace.

Once again, peace in the passage doesn't mean your mental condition. Thus, you mustn't make sure the peace with your current mind as the peace can only be confirmed by the joy for the world of life, fulfilled by Jesus Christ.

The very faith makes believers look forward to the truth that God completes His will, whose mind is stayed in the Lord. They would rather look up to the world of the eternal life even in difficulties while trusting that God is always doing good to His people than resent by saying, "why is God doing all these to me?"

Whether we are rich or poor, one thing unchangeable is the fact that the children of God are being led to the world of glory. In order for Him to do so, He is holding us in Christ. Believing in the truth can be called, true 'peace'!
