<설교>

Chapter 95

Faith and Disciple

Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples;

And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God!

And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.

Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou?

He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.

One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.

And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone. (John 1:35-42 KJV)

(Sermon)

The interest of people who look up to Jesus is probably heaven. We can often see people who say they go to church to go to heaven, but it is doubtful they can go to heaven by going to church. It doesn't mean there should be something else other than going to church to go to heaven, but it means to ask if going to church can make one a believer.

Jesus called His disciples as He began His public ministry. The reason He chose them was not to be helped for His ministry, but to show all of us who we are, so-called, believers. That is, His disciples were not the ones who were chosen and trained in a special way for the gospel of the kingdom by taking lessons.

We think a disciple is one who is taught by a master. That's why we easily understand the disciples were taught by the Lord to obey the Word and testify the gospel to others. Yet, as you know, although it is true that they were taught by the Lord, it is also known that they didn't live accordingly.

Then, did the Lord fail in calling them out? Was their failure because He chose wrong people? One thing for sure is that whomever He called, the result would have been the same. It is because all men will fail in the matter of faith anyway.

We ought to look into ourselves while looking at His disciples. We should learn what kind of grace and love calls one out of the world and guides to be a believer.

We think living as His disciples is to show the Lord's character and works. Yet, was it so according to the disciples? Did they present who the Lord is and what He did as they were taught by the Lord? As I told you, they all failed. In other words, we shouldn't think living as His disciples is showing His character and works.

In the passage, we can see John, standing next to his two disciples, looked upon Jesus walking and said, "Behold the Lamb of God." Then, the two disciples heard him and followed Jesus. Can you understand this situation? John didn't explain about Jesus at all. He just said, "Behold the Lamb of God." Then, they followed Him.

In Verse 40 and 41, it says, "One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ."

Andrew, one of the two who followed Jesus, came to Peter and told him, "We have found the Messiah." John didn't say He was the Messiah. Even though John only said, "the Lamb of God", Andrew noticed Jesus as the Messiah by what John said.

It is such marvelous that Andrew recognized Him as the Messiah by hearing John, saying, "the Lamb of God", even though Jesus didn't reveal Himself to him, nor did He do any miracle. Andrew and Jesus didn't even meet in person. However, we shouldn't conclude the situation with his capability. Furthermore, we should notice that recognition of the Messiah is not a qualification to be His disciple, either.

Then, how did Andrew notice Jesus as the Messiah? In Verse 45, it says, "Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."

Philip found the One he met was what Moses in the law and the prophets wrote. That is, they, Philip and Andrew, recognized Him by the scriptures.

In Isaiah 53:6-7, it says, "All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth."

Prophet wrote the Messiah is the Lamb, who would take the iniquity of us who have gone astray. We can learn that they found the Messiah when they heard John based on the verse.

Therefore, the two disciples knew what the prophet said and kept it in their mind; otherwise, they wouldn't have reacted to the Lamb when John said it.

In this sense, keeping the Word of God in mind is followed by being a disciple of Jesus because no one can say one follows God without an interest of the Word of God.

The Word of God is God Himself and contains all He does. Furthermore, believing in God means that believers know that God will fulfill what He has said, and look forward to seeing that. Thus, believers in faith can't help being interested in the Word of God.

Disciples of Christ always come to meditate and get caught by the Word, realizing Jesus Christ, the Word Himself, is the life and everything for them. It is the disciples of Christ today who are led to follow where He walked in such work.

If so, His disciples can't help but react to the message of Jesus, the Lamb of God, the Substitute for our sins, dying on the cross, or the eternal life, given by His resurrection on earth to the kingdom of heaven. The story of the Lord can't sound repetitive or boring to their ears but awakening in the Word of life for them.

Knowing who Jesus Christ is doesn't require special experiences because believers meet their Lord in the Word, not through other experiences. The Word is sufficient for them to get to know their Lord, Jesus Christ.

Believers are to learn who God is and who Jesus Christ is, while being revealed of their sinful nature and powerlessness. Therefore, disciples of Jesus are not the ones who try to be acknowledged by the world but the ones who rejoice for Christ, who let them know what the Word of God means.

Disciples are the ones, reigned by the Lord, which means that they are not responsible for their lives but cast their cares on the Lord. All these changes are made by the Word of God.

Disciples are not church-goers. They are the ones, who can hear the message of the cross, discerning what is of the cross and what is out of the cross by faith. They earnestly pray that they are reigned by the Lord in the realization of their value of life on Him. Such is only produced by Himself.

If you would like to know whether you are living as His disciple, you can check yourself if your thoughts of God and the world are renewed. In this sense, even if one brought hundreds and thousands to church, one may not be His disciple.

Would you like to have a life beginning with the cross and ending with the cross? The true disciple of Jesus is the one who is full of the mind of the cross with the power of resurrection and the grace of Christ, Savior and Giver of the eternal life!
