<설교>

Chapter 104

Faith and Glory

Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.

And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:

He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;

And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.

And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. (Roman 4:18-22 KJV)

(Sermon)

Paul says Abraham believed in the promise of God when there was no hope, didn't falter at the promise, was strong in faith and glorified God. Yet, what he says is far different from the records of the Book of Genesis. He was not the one who believed in the promise of God without a doubt.

Taking a consideration of the life of Abraham, even though we call him the father of faith, we can't easily conclude that he is a great man. Nevertheless, the reason why we call him the father of faith is the will and zeal of God, who made Abraham who he was. In other words, Abraham is not great, but God, who made him the father of faith, is great and omnipotent.

Thus, when we call Abraham the father of faith, we should think of God, not Abraham, which is to glorify God. In this sense, we need to take heed to what it means to be 'the glory to God' or 'glorifying God' because many christians connect it to their own glory in the world.

Most christians relate the glory of God in their religious practice and work. They think they glorify God when they do something to be acknowledged and praised by the world. For example, when one won at a competition, one says, "I would like to give glory to God." Of course, one might have thankfulness to God for that, but we should know that's not to glorify God at all.

If a christian could glorify God by doing something excellent and being a prominent person, it would be true that those who didn't win any prize or didn't become successful ones can't glorify God. Yet, that's not what the Bible teaches and we should remember our success and being acknowledged by the world has nothing to do with the glory of God.

Nonetheless, many ask God to make them to glorify God in their prayer since many preachers teach the glory of God in the world point of view. Thus, we must notice that such teaching is nothing but a desire to seek for their own glory.

In Verse 20, it says, "He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God."

In Genesis, there is no record that Abraham glorified God. He neither said, "I would like to glorify God", nor did anything to intend to glorify God. What is written is that he rather revealed himself not trusting in the covenant of God and God was leading him in faith. Yet, Paul saw what was the glory to God in Abraham's life, which supports the fact that Paul knew what it means to be the glory to God.

Paul had no interest in testifying the greatness of Abraham's faith. All he was interested in was only Christ. He was focusing on Christ being preached, and whatever he was doing, he wanted to proclaim who Christ is.

In this sense, we will find that Paul was speaking to us about the power of God, who made Abraham the father of faith, while denying man-made faith in the passage. It is the glory to God that we are aware that we have faith, not by our work or zeal but the omnipotent of God.

Abraham is the one who failed in faith. Failure in faith is common among the people who were called by God. As you know, that Abraham begot Ismael is the result that he tried to fulfill the covenant of God on his own while not having the promised son.

When God said to him through His angel that He would give him a son, he laughed, thinking it sounded like a joke due to his age and physical condition. Then, Verse 19, "And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb", might seem that Paul would hide Abraham's failure in order to magnify his faith.

As spoken earlier, Paul sees God Himself through Abraham, not Abraham, which means he doesn't see his failure but sees the power of God, who held his faith in him in spite of the fact that he had no faith. That's why Paul didn't mention about his failure.

The Israelites thought they would glorify God by keeping the law with their zeal. They deeded it was their faith for God. However, there is no power of God in such faith, ignoring the power of God, who is the Giver of faith, and only leaving the labor and righteousness of men. There was only misunderstanding in them that they would glorify God.

We mustn't forget that there is nothing to give glory to God left in keeping the law but men's boast about it. We have to know the fact that christians are living in hypocrisy unless they know they can never glorify God by what they do.

In Romans 4:13-14, it says, "For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect."

God considered Abraham righteous. It was not by his keeping the law but by his faith. Yet his faith was not from him but from God. In other words, he was considered righteous by God-given faith.

Therefore, we can say that the righteousness of Abraham is of the power and love of God, who gave faith to a faithless man. Thus, believers can glorify God by giving thanks to God and praising God that He has given us, who are faithless, faith to believe in Christ and depend on Him, the Promised of God. Consequently, the glory to God is not by what we do but by the work of God.

Then, we can learn that His electing us and calling us out is done according to His will that He would be glorified by us who are tools. As a result, believers come to give glory to God by living in faith since they are looking up to the work of God regardless of what they do.

If you don't understand such glory to God, it is because you connect faith to your religious practice and work, thinking that there must be something visible by living in faith. You are captured by a thought that you can't glorify God without what you do in faith.

God has made us His tools to glorify God. This is the honor and glory that we can enjoy. Yet, one loses it by trying to do something tangible to glorify God, and one can't realize a man of faith, confessing Christ is the Lord, is the fruit of the work of God by His power and zeal. It is the faith that concentrates on what God is doing, and only can such faith be the glory to God!
